Being a soldier requires three very important skills: Nobility, intelligence, and self-sacrifice. Justi Ueki Tylor, age 20 (As he always introduces himself) has none of these traits. Joining the military at the very instant a war sparks between the United Planets Space Force and the Raalgon Empire, he gets a nice, easy desk job of delivering pension checks to retired military officials.

However, while delivering a pension check to retired Admiral Robert J. Hanner, Tylor walks right into a major situation; two Raalgon terrorists, seeking to demoralize the UPSF citizens, are holding Admiral Hanner, his two daughters Emi and Yumi, and Lt. Commander Yuriko Star hostage. In a rare chance of luck, Tylor saves the day, and as a reward from the higher-ups of the military, he is given control of a starship and promoted to Captain! However, the starship Soyokaze (Meaning \'Gentle Breeze\') has a bad reputation for losing captains and being the dumping pit of the worst in the military.

Hated by his crew, despised by the fleet Admirals, and targeted by the Raalgons as a major threat, Tylor may be the only one who can save the day!
