Deceptively Deep
When staring into a deep slow river, you mostly see the surface: bugs floating by skimming the top, maybe a fish popping up to snag one of them for dinner. But underneath, in the roiling currents there's something going on. This anime has a lot going on. Its beautifully drawn, detailled, every frame like a painting. The characters are not your typical archetypes, though they may seem that way for the first 3 episodes. You start to realize they're far more like real people as you study them, complete with stress, guilt, longing, in the present, not just some mysterious open and shut past as a gimmick. I don't see many true gimmicks in this, once you start to realize the deeper character of these people. While its sometimes very comic at first, it seems to be turning into a complex romance. As there are two full seasons available on YouTube, I'm planning to watch it all while I can.
