Once there, the two girls become priestesses (miko) of two of the four aforementioned gods who rule the universe and have a band of celestial warriors (seishi) that serve each of them. Miaka becomes the Suzaku no Miko (Priestess of Suzaku, aka the Red Phoenix or God of the South) and joins the Suzaku Seven warriors (the goodies) in protecting Konan. Yui, on the other hand, becomes the Priestess of Seiryuu, the Azure Dragon or God of the East, and joins the Seiryuu Seven warriors (the baddies) who are led by Nakago, whose desire is to take over Konan. Some warriors and priestesses of the other gods (Byakko, the White Tiger or God of the West, and Genbu, the Black Tortoise/Snake or God of the North) play more minor roles. Also each of the seishi is identified as a celestial warrior by a unique Kanji/constellation sign that they bear on their body and have a particular special power that helps them defend their priestess and god. The story line for Fushigi Yuugi is very well-developed as are most of its characters and the anime is excellent. Some minor annoyances emanate from the female side of the cast (so what's new?) and, be warned, Miaka's Japanese voice is quite high on the Squeak-Meter.
