This week my college is celebrating banned book week. This is a week dedicated to all the books 'they' don't want us to read. Books that are thought of as 'odscene', too 'violent', or a number of other reasons. These books include, but are not limited too:
Catcher in the Rye
All Harry Potter Books
Tom Sawyer
Huck Finn
The Bible
I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings
Of Mice and Men
Lord of the Flies
A Wrinkle in Time
The Outsiders
To Kill a Mocking Bird
Cujo
Ferinhight 451 (Ironiclly and book about censorship)
In the words of Judy Blume: “[I]t’s not just the books under fire now that worry me. It is the books that will never be written. The books that will never be read. And all due to the fear of censorship. As always, young readers will be the real losers.”
Please pick up a book and read, for with in lies adventure, danger, and love.
To all the writers and future writers: Never let the fear of what other think sway your course, for with out you the censors would be out of a job. Seriously though, many of you have great talent, don't let fear keep you from showing the world what you can do.
Emerald's recommended reading: Harry Potter, Huck Finn, and The Outsiders. |
