Artist's Commentary Owned by Cowboy Bebop. It had been less than a year since her only companion had died. The little corgi had lived for nine years. It had been a rockslide, and not age, that had finally taken him from her. She had blamed herself for his loss. With the data dog gone, the last ties to her past were broken. She had no intention of inviting anything new into her life. It was late at night when she first heard that mournful cry. It came as a bit of a shock- so few animals had survived the calamity of the gate destruction. It sounded again, softer, and she crept towards the source. She found the little creature curled in a ball- shivering in loneliness and thin from hunger. Soft words and half a ration bar were enough to overcome the natural inclination to run. Within an hour, the little animal was sleeping at her side. She never thought her heart could accept another companion. It came as a shock that she could sleep through the night without waking in tears. Now, one year later, the two were inseperable. And it was time to move on. She had picked up a thread of information across her old and battered laptop- a ship was making a stopover on its way to Mars. The crew was a little different- their days were now spent collecting cargo instead of bounties. However, the young woman had little fear that she'd be able to catch a ride with them. She wondered if they still talked about 'him'... if they knew that he wasn't.... She smiled. She left off the thought as she collected her meager belongings. The ship would be landing in about two hours. She didn't want to miss them. Ed giggled out loud. "Come on Spike, let's go se if Jet can still make bell peppers and beef!" The little creature woofed, jumping to its feet. In seconds, the two wild animals were running to the far horizon. The only thing remaining behind were their footprints, which vanished in the next gust of wind. *********************** Watch for the fanfic- coming soon. |
