Chapter 4: Not my day!
So to sum this weekend up I had my first real kiss by a boy I liked, and the kiss of the century by the boy I'm in denial about liking all in the same day! I was on a roll, really! I have two boys I don't know what to do about, a cousin who probably wants to murder me and a room full of not so innocent bystanders ready to cheer on the kayos.
“Alright guy's time to break it up” My mom called as she entered the room. Thankfully everyone left with out a word. “Ryan Titi Maiya said if you want to bunk with David you can.” Ryan jumped at the chance. “Erin you staying with Melanie?” mom asked as she opened the door to the room across from me. Erin gave me a strange look then said no. She made some excuse that her dad said not tonight.
When everyone was gone mom sat with me and wanted to know what was wrong. She noticed the tension between Erin and me. My mom and I were close I could tell her almost anything. Though some things I kept to myself. “I think Erin like's one of the boys here and well …. He may like me.”
Mom gave me that all knowing look. Like she's been there and gone threw that kind of look. “Well honey, a person can't control who they like, but I will say this you should never let a boy come between friendship, let alone the relationship between you and your cousin.”
I certainly wasn't planning on it but somehow this is where I am! “What happens if I like the boy too?” Mom put her arms around me then kissed my forehead. “Boys come and go but family is forever.” If only she knew the whole situation I don't think she would be so cool calm and collective about this.
“Ok mom lets ix-nay on the whole cousin scenario and change, to another dilemma.” I got up and started to pace in front of her. “Let's say there are two boys, I like both but one more then the other.” I did a 360 and plopped down on the bed.
“But I don't want to like this boy so I make nice with the other boy I like rather then deal with the one I really like.” Mom lay back with me and said. “I think you know it's not cool to lead someone on.” I knew this, but what was I supposed to do? “Ok mom but the one I really like happens to be the one Erin likes!” I all but yelled in frustration.
Mainly because that wasn't the only complication. I mean yeah it was a big one, but what about the fact that he has been a part of the family for almost six years now! “I see your problem and I stick to my original answer. Never let anyone get between you and family. Maybe if you talk to Erin about it; it would help.”
I groaned, I really would rather poke my own eyes out! “Go to bed Hun, it's late, and you know your goanna be up early.”
This night was going to be a night of crazy dreams for me!
****
Every morning it was tradition to wake early and see who would be first to ring the old bell on the hill by the dinning hall. I was up at the crack of dawn, showered and dressed with in the hour. The first stop I made was to Erin's room, to see if she was ready to go. “Hey Tio, is Erin up?” He pointed to the bathroom. I of course barged in.
“Come on psycho! “ She was brushing her teeth. “Shut up butt face!” She said with a mouth full of tooth past. After she rinsed I dragged her out, I wanted to be first! By the time we came out the door you saw my brother, David, and Gio already half way to the hill.
“Come on!!” I yelled and took her by the hand as I ran fast. We started to gain on them when they noticed us and hulled ass. We didn't make it, but Ryan let us ring the big bell with him and Dave. We kept ringing until we noticed people coming out of the cabins.
The rest of our little weekend click joined us at the top of the hill. We acted like such kids. It was the beauty of that place we were free to just have fun. “Alright first one down the hill wins!” Ryan yelled. “I'm to big to be rolling down a hill.” I said with an arched eyebrow. I was totally joking but apparently that went over someone's head, because next thing you know Devin pushed me down the hill!
Everyone laughed as I slid down then tucked into a roll. When I reached the bottom everyone followed and I yelled “I guess that means I won!!!” then ran off to the dinning hall, Erin hot on my tails. “That was mean.” She said about Devin as we got on line for the breakfast buffet.
I laughed it off “I don't care ... helped me win right?” I stuck my tongue out in a silly manner. “Hey!” Erin pulled my chin towards her. “You're bleeding!” I touched the spot I didn't even feel anything, but there was some blood. Not gushing, but you would think it the way Erin yelled.
“I probably scrapped it on my way down the hill” I took a napkin to wipe my chin. Titi Brianna was in front of me on line and suggested I go to the bathroom to wash it out. I scrunched my brows “Really?” I said sarcasm laced in my voice. It was a scrape! But I went and cleaned up, by the time I got back the line was almost empty.
I went got my food found Erin's table and sat to eat. Apparently in the time it took me to go to the bathroom then get my food everyone thought I split my chin wide open! “Erin! What the hell, it's a tiny scrape!!” I was mad she made such a big deal about it. “I don't care! He shouldn't have pushed you!”
So this is about Devin I thought. “He was playing trust me he wasn't trying to hurt me!” I didn't yell at her but I did use my most stern voice. I was so annoyed, especially when mom came to the table to check on me. I explained to her what happened and showed her there was nothing wrong.
Now I was mad at Erin, I don't like being the center of attention. I eat my food in silence then left her there at the table when I was finished. I went out side and a couple of the guys were already playing basketball. “Mel come play with us.” Ryan called out to me. “Sure why not.” I wasn't the best ball player but I wasn't the worst either.
Besides it was just my brother, Gio, and David playing so this should be a no brainier. {Not!} After ten maybe fifteen minutes of playing, Ryan and I were up 2 points. My cousin Gio is what we like to call a supper sore loser! So naturally he couldn't have a girl wining against him for anything! So I took another ball to the head. That's right I'm surprised I even remember the weekend with all, the head trauma.
Only this time my lower lip busted. And sure enough there was gushing blood everywhere! Oh man I wanted to cry so badly but when I looked around I noticed Naomi, Riley, Tino, Erin and Devin all coming out the dining hall at just that moment. My luck is priceless!! “Yo, what the fuck Gio are you out of your mind!!?” Tino yelled as they all ran toward me. Except Erin she went back inside, no doubt to tell Gio's mom, Titi Brianna.
Ryan was punching Gio in the arm while Riley and Devin were helping me up. Devin took off his shirt and put it to my lip then turned around and punched Gio dead in the face. At this point Tino was pulling Ryan off Gio and yelling at Devin to chill out. Gavin and Chase came running to brake up the fight. “Alright that's enough!”
Titi Brianna, Mom, and a bunch of other's came over to break things up. “Mel let me see.” Mom pulled the shirt away from my lip and made a nasty face. “Alright let's go back into the dinning hall and get some ice.”
While mom and I went to the hall Titi was yelling at Gio for hitting me with the ball and yelling at the boys for ganging up on her son. As soon as I was in the hall the water works were on. Mom laughed she found it funny that I wouldn't cry in front of everyone but with her I was the biggest baby there is. “Hello that's what mom's are for!”
With Devin's shirt mom put Ice in it and put it to my lip. “Keep it on and the swelling will go down.” Erin cracked a joke from behind mom. “Maybe we need to get you the -I've fallen and I can't get up- button” because of all the hit's I'm taking today.
“Ha! Ha! Very funny!” mom and Erin laughed, telling me to lighten up. But all I really wanted was to somehow get past everyone and get to my room. Again I have no such luck.
All the cousin's were on the courts playing basketball, the adults were on the other court playing volleyball. When I came out the basketball game paused to see if I was good. Which I assured everyone I was.
Riley put his arm around me and asked if I would stay and cheer him on. “No I'm headed to my room.” I looked at the blood on my shirt to indicate that I wanted to change. “When you're done?” “We'll see.” I really didn't want to come back. I just felt like today was going to be one of those days and I was done!
Erin walked with me back to my room. “Did you see Devin with his tank top? Oh my god he is hot!” I didn't expect that. I didn't know we moved on to talking about Devin like a hot crush. Then again I should have expected it since I never said I have a problem with it.
“What happened to his shirt? Not that I'm complaining.” I looked at the shirt I had to my mouth and I saw the realization in her eyes. “What did he do jump at the chance to give you his shirt!!!” She was angry with me. I didn't know what to say but I was kind of mad too.
“Listen don't get snippy with me! I didn't ask for his shirt! But I'm not going to lie and say I didn't like it that he gave it to me!!” Erin was a little taken back by my outburst. She stopped walking and in an almost defeated voice “I was only saying how obvious he's being, I wasn't accusing you of anything.”
I felt like kicking my own ass! “I'm sorry Erin, I've had a bad morning you know I didn't mean to snap at you.” She raised a brow as if she didn't believe me. “What ever! …. It doesn't matter because I decided last night that I don't like Devin anymore anyway!”
That got my full attention and as we continued to my room I questioned her like the Spanish inquisition. I needed to know why? What changed her mind and more! She basically told me it was because she like's Jesse now. Oh man my bad day suddenly became bright again.
