Chapter One

-The year 2035 in Reality-

“Heart rate?”

“Normal.”

“What about breathing rate?”

“As usual ma'am.”

“Any brain activity?” asked a blonde-haired woman with a pack of cigarettes; lighter in hand, she glanced up from her papers. She was looking at a twenty-year-old man with short black hair, and slim glasses resting on his nose.

“No Ms. Hintaro,” he responded in his usual monotone.

“Well then, ja ne, see you later, Kawasaki-chan, I have a previous engagement.” Ms. Hintaro walked out of the office while applying bright red lipstick on her lips, leaving him behind, once again.

His eyes followed her bitterly,” Bitch…” he muttered, pushing his glasses back in place. Kawasaki turned and faced the spotless lab.

The lab was somewhat small, an oversized rat cage perhaps. Small wires and cords ran along the walls, like a silky spider web. A single power cord about as big around as a small fist plunged into the bottom of the tanks. Small machines regulate the amount of nourishing liquid, and oxygen the two subjects received. The light in the lab was dimmed so if the subjects woke, they wouldn't be blinded permanently.

Drip…drip…drip…went the faucet to the right of the tanks behind a computer desk. Someone had neglected to turn it off; Kawasaki heard the faucet, sighed, and walked slowly to it.

After he had turned it off, he heard Ms. Hintaro's gay laughter coming from the hallway. He scowled, closed the doors leading to the hallway, and turned back to the tanks. He smiled at the two misty blue tanks, pressing a hand to the placid surface.

“Don't worry; she'll never hurt you.” He caressed the glass tenderly, wanting them to stir begging them to. He slowly pressed his lips to the surface, being a most attentive lover. “Soon,” he stroked the glass, as if he could magically bring his slumbering charges to consciousness. Pulling away, he smiled again…shadows crossing over his features. “Soon my darlings…I'll find a way…to wake you…soon.”
