" Ever since I was a young man, I was simply know as Lampe, which is my last name. And when I joined the Gestapo at age 53, I was simply addressed as `Herr Lampe'. It has come to the point that I have abandoned my own first name, Acetylene Lampe but it hardly bothered me, so I did not bother to try to recover it. And ever since the death of my daughter Rosa, few things have mattered in my life except my son Torche A. Lampe, and getting revenge on the man who caused my daughter to commit suicide…Sohei Toge."
Herr Lampe walked down the corridor of the old Edo fish warehouse slowly, his cane lightly tapping against the floor with each step. Lampe wore a black trench coat made of felt, a charcoal dress pants, and a light gray fedora hat. He wore uncommonly thick rimmed glasses that magnified his wicked eyes and had an equally odd long mouth that made his grin like that of a viper. The place was horrid, Lampe thought, it was insanely freezing in the building and it still reeked of dead fish, even though the building had been abandoned for several years. Lampe slowly headed toward the large metal door that was caked with rust and filth left from age and the excrement of insects and rodents. He opened the door and walked into the small , boxed in room. There stood six Nazi infantry men and two Gestapo officers, and a Japanese man that was tied down to a chair. He was wearing only his pants, and a torn shirt.
He looked up to see Lampe, his eyes widening in shock, " You again!"
Herr Lampe grinned his venomous snake-like grin and spoke, " We meet again Mr. Toge."
" You have no right to hold me like this!", Toge shouted, his eyes flared like a raging fire, his eyebrows slanted downward viciously.
Lampe took his cane into his hand and struck Mr. Toge hard across his left cheek, drawing blood and almost instantly leaving a black mark. Lampe grinned maliciously and said, " Mr. Sohei Toge….. It is regardless of what we have a right to do. The point is what we WILL do if you do not tell us the whereabouts of those documents."
Toge sneered and growled, " I don't know what your talking about!"
Lampe drew his arm back again and struck his face with his cane once more., knocking one of his teeth to the floor. Lampe sighed, then said, " I am being foolish, don't you think Mr. Toge? Trying to get information from you this way, I might as well hit a brick wall. However… Maybe if someone else…". Lampe grinned wickedly, turned to one of the Gestapo officers and nodded, then the man walked out into a different room. A few moments later, the officer came back, this time with the Japanese Ss specret Police officer, Inspector Akabane. Akabane was a thin lanky man with a circular head with oily black hair, though his front of his scalp had no hair to speak of. His eyes were that of a nervous soul, but his grin was strikingly similar to a rat's. Akabane wore a brown overcoat, brown pants, and a beige driving cap, and had a cigarette in his mouth. Inspector Akabane grinned to Toge as he pushed a young Jewish boy forward. His being Jewish was clearly labeled by the Star of David patch sewn to his shirt. The boy was no older than seven.
" Now Mr. Toge… I am sure you are familiar with Inspector Akabane of the Secret Police. Meet Stephen Adams," Lampe said with another grin, " Now, where are the documents?"
Toge sat silently, not making a motion to speak. Lampe waited a few moments, then looked to Inspector Akabane and said, " Alright. You may begin Inspector."
With his slimy rodent-like grin, Akabane removed the cigarette from his mouth, and put it out on the young boys neck. The boy screeched in terrible pain, but was silenced when slapped by one of the Gestapo officers.
" Shut your mouth you Jewish pig!", the Gestapo officer said with a scolding tone, as if the boy had done something wrong.
Toge was at a loss of words for a moment, the shouted, "What the hell is wrong with you people?! He's just a kid you Nazi bastards!"
Herr Lampe stood firmly, then spoke, " Let's try this again… Where are the documents, Mr. Toge?"
" I don't know what you're talking about! Please, I'm telling you the truth!", Toge shouted desperately.
In response, Akabane lit the cigarette again with a match and put it out on the boy's cheek, the young Stephen, tried not to scream in fear of getting beaten, but it was no use, the pain was unbearable and he fell to the floor, weeping.
" God damnit stop it!", Toge shouted, in tears.
" Last chance Toge", Lampe said, " Where are those documents?"
" I don't know! I swear to you on my name I don't know!", Toge screamed pleadingly.
Lampe grinned and nodded to Akabane.
Inspector Akabane pulled out a pistol and put it to the young boys head.
" N-No!", shouted Toge.
The explosion from the bullet was piercing to the ear, and rang out and echoed through the empty halls of the abandoned warehouse. Thick blood splattered out in specks on the wall as the bullet had exited the forehead of the young boy. Sohei Toge stared and the tiny body slumped on the floor in a pool of blood, tears flowed from his eyes heavily. He wanted to curse them, he wanted to scream bloody murder and shout constant insults. He wanted to kill them. But he was too in shock, he just sat there, trembling. Two of the Gestapo officers untied him and led him out of the warehouse.
" Why are we letting him go?", Akabane asked.
Lampe grinned, and replied, " Making him suffer physically would be pointless. Now, leaving him to his suffering, knowing the life of a child lies on his head, will be the most powerful torture. Also, will be in constant fear…knowing that we will do even worse next time."
" I see…", Akabane said and laughed.
Sohei Toge walked down the filthy streets of the Kamakura Marketplace, not paying attention to the people asking if he was alright, after all, he was covered in bruises, and the throbbing pain in his head was unbearable, but he didn't care right now. He couldn't get the image of the boy's eyes out of his mind. The expression on his face before he was murdered. Why, Toge thought, WHY! Why did they have to kill him? He was just a kid! He had done no wrong.
But even that did not make Toge talk. Even though he was close to it, he still did not reveal the whereabouts of the documents. THE documents, the ones that would destroy the Nazi party, the documents that would avenge so many deaths, including his brother Isao, and that poor little boy.
Akabane and Lampe walked down the street, then Lampe stopped and turned to Akabane.
" I have to leave for Germany tomorrow. I want you to do two things for me.", Lampe said.
" Yes sir?", Akabane asked.
" Keep an eye Sohei Toge for one. And second, there is a man here named Higeoyajii giving shelter to a group of refugee jews. Take care of that situation, will you?", Lampe said.
" Yes sir", Akabane answered, grinning.
The house of school teacher Shunsaku Ban, also known as Higeoyajii, was large, and very cozy in it's entirety. He was one of the few men in Japan that had three sofas, and the only one that kept them in the same room, encircling the fireplace. Shunsaku Ban always preferred comfort over style, and necessity for that matter. At the sofas sat two Jewish families, all dressed in rather old clothing, but most Jewish refugees had even less than that. The first family consisted of a husband, wife, and two sons and a daughter, and the second consisted of a husband, uncle, and three daughters, the wife of the second family had already been taken to a concentration camp before they could escape. All the children ranged from ages 5-8. The wife of the first family, Annette, smiled and said, " We can't thank you enough for all you have done for us, Higeoyajii-san."
" Ah it's nothing. Don't worry about it, now eat, and get comfortable", Shunsaku Ban said with his booming, yet pleasant voice. Shunsaku Ban was a very round, plump, strong man , bald, and with a long white mustache that curved down along his cheeks.
The family was just about to begin eating when there was a knock at the door. Shunsaku Ban gestured them to hide themselves in the basement, which they quickly complied to, then Shunsaku Ban went and answered the door.
" Yes? Can I help you?", asked Shunsaku Ban.
" Inspector Akabane, of the Secret Police", Akabane said with a grin. Akabane pushed Shunsaku Ban aside and invited himself in. Akabane grinned, his eyebrows slanted downward. " Word has it that you are sheltering a group of Jewish refugees, Higeoyajii.".
" Well, I'm not", Shunsaku Ban replied sternly, his arms folded.
" I think…that you are lying", Akabane pursued.
" Think whatever you want, but do it elsewhere, and I am rather busy, so please leave.", Shunsaku Ban said.
" I will leave when the Jewish refugees are in my possession.", Akabane interrupted.
Shunsaku Ban glared and shouted, " Look, there are no refugees here and you have NO right to act so disrespectful in my house! Now leave!"
" I will leave when I choose to, Higeoyajii", Akabane said, grinning.
Losing his patience, Shunsaku Ban let out a cry of frustration and punched Akabane in the face hard, sending Akabane stumbling back into the wall. Akabane growled and drew his gun from his coat.
Shunsaku Ban's eyes widened and he held his hands up, and said, " N-now hold on. Don't do anything hasty."
Akabane grinned, cocked the pistol in his hand, and said, " Sorry pal, The Secret Police doesn't give second chances.".
The thundering blast from the bullet exiting the gun echoed throughout the basement, where the two Jewish families had hidden themselves. Despite their knowing what had become of their savior and friend, they all remained deathly silent, out of fear.
Inspector Akabane walked out of the house to his two large thugs/assistants. He put a cigarette in his mouth and lit it, then said, "Burn it down." . Akabane walked down the peaceful suburban street, the burning house provided a comfortable crackling sound to his ears. Ahh, another herd of Jewish pigs bite the dust, Akabane thought gleefully to himself as he smoked vibrantly from his cigarette, taking in all the pure joys that could be taken from evil and poison.
