The halls were dark. Not entirely because it made the atmosphere more creepy as all the power was being drained to the...lower corridors. He sat behind the protective glass, watching as the electrical currents ran through his patient’s brain. If this didn't cure him he wasn't certain what would. He sighed and flipped the switch. The lights came back on around the building and he stepped into the main room. Drool slipped from the poor insane man's lips, and there was the distinctive smell of burnt flesh and hair.

"Nurse, please take him back to his room. It seems that he's unable to continue our session." The female nurse nodded as she brought in the wheelchair.

The young doctor sighed, pushing his glasses up his nose while writing his diagnosis. 'Hopeless' was scrawled all over the page. He was beginning to think that he belonged here in more than just a professional sense. Putting the clipboard up, he took his personal notes to his office. On his way he took note that one of the patients doors was open. He would have to let the guards know that a patient was on the loose again.

The lights began to flicker. He could hear the patients yelling and screaming as they thrashed about their restraints. It was a full moon tonight, which meant that the patients were restless as usual. Sitting down behind his oak desk, he looked at all the reports he had filed over the past few months since he'd started residency there. He noticed that his writing was slowly becoming more erratic. Was it his writing that was so erratic, or was it his thoughts?

He paused at that, making another note to give himself an examination when he found the time. After filing his last report for the night, he opened up the drawer to his right. Inside was a large silver box. After opening it with another key, he took out the syringe and the bottle of medicine. After filling the syringe with the strange liquid, he started off down the hall to see his favorite patient. She was dangerous, undoubtedly, but she was quiet for the most part. Not to mention beautiful.

Perhaps she would be his next subject.

Alice sat by the window in her dark room. Her hands were tightly around the bars as if she was willing them to move. All the mirrors in her room had been taken out because she cut her wrists with the last mirror she owned. In her lap was the white stuffed rabbit. Blond hair laid over her white medical gown as she listened to the screams of the other patients. They were always screaming. She never screamed. Not even when the doctor gave her the horrible burning shot. She never yelled.

Her head snapped quickly to the door as it opened. She pushed blond locks from her pale blue eyes so she could see her doctor.

"Hello, Dr. Hatter," she said in her mellow tone voice. That wasn't his name, but it was what she called him. It was close enough anyways. He reminded her so much of the mad hatter with the way he was always asking her questions and taking care of her.

She looked down at her wrists that were bandaged from last week’s mirror accident. "Have you come to take me to wonderland again?" she said. Wonderland was the white room he took her too where they watched her dream, monitoring her thoughts. So many times she had gotten close to the real Wonderland in those sessions.

"Not tonight, Alice." Dr. Hatter. She had called him that since he started working there. The previous doctor before him had mentioned that she had delusions of a place called Wonderland. He figured that it was a mental fabrication of her own psychosis. She was taking people she knew and fabricating them in this dream world of hers. It seemed that to her, he was destined to play the part of this...Mad Hatter of hers.

Reaching over, he slowly rubbed her arm with a sterilizing pad before pushing the needle into her arm and letting the liquid slide into her bloodstream. "I believe I almost have the mixture right," he told her. He watched as the medicine began to take hold of her. As it did, he reached over to pull the rabbit from her. The last time a nurse did this Alice bit her. He wanted to see how Alice would react with a night without it.

Alice quickly grabbed the rabbit, glaring at him harshly. "Don't. I'll be late. I need him to help me find my way back," she said cold and pulled the rabbit back to her chest. She looked out the window again. She never got to go outside, not since she started digging holes...looking for the right one.

"I'm afraid that he has to come with me," he told her. "I'll have him back to you before you go to bed. I promise."

"Oh leave the poor girl alone." Hands rested on Matthew's back as a warm body was pressed against him. The voice almost purred in his ear. The male nurse pressed uncomfortably close against him as he held out Alice's pills. "Take them. They'll make you'll feel all warm inside."

Alice smiled. "Mr. Cat...you have come at last..." she whispered. Reaching out she grabbed the pills. "I wish to go back, Mr. Cat. Back to the beginning." She popped the pills in her mouth.

The nurse smiled at Alice. Reaching over he pet her hair before sighing. "If only all the other patients were as sweet as you."

"Yes, well, if they were than I would be out of a job," Matthew told him. Standing, he examined Alice. No signs of blisters or fever. "Please remove your gown." He fixed his glasses and started writing on his paper.

'Mr. Cat' shook his head as he looked at Alice. Taking her jaw, he told her to say 'Ah'. After checking to make certain that she swallowed her pills, he rubbed her head before walking off to finish his rounds.

"Mr. Cat!" Alice called as she stood. Her body wobbled and she grabbed onto Matthew for stability. Holding her head, she blinked a few times to focus. "Come back to visit...you always leave before I can say goodbye. Such a bad kitty." She turned to Matthew and started taking her hospital gown off. "Mr. Hatter, it isn't very nice for you to ask such things...we haven't had tea yet..."

The doctor smiled, both at Alice's insanity and at the fact that she was showing her beautiful body to him so easily. "Next time," he promised. His hands went out as he felt her chest. Not for any reason in particular, other than he wished to. That and he was searching for marks. Two weeks ago she had cat scratches on her, and he had no idea how she got them. Once he was thoroughly convinced that she was in decent physical condition, and after getting an eyeful and a handful, he nodded to her gown. "You may dress again, Alice."

He wrote down his findings on a board before looking back at her. "Have you had any visits to Wonderland lately?"

Alice snatched her rabbit from him. "What a cruel thing to say, Mr. Hatter!" she said sadly. She shook her rabbit as if she was mad at it. "He just won't speak yet! He just won't talk! But I will make him! I will make you speak, White Rabbit!" she said evilly. She then began to stroke it lovingly. "It is ok. I forgive you...we mustn't be late...we mustn't be late at all...what will the Queen say?" She held her head again. "It's a little fuzzy in here. Mr. Cat...where are you when I need you! You have to show me the way!"

Matthew sighed. "Please Alice, put on your gown and sit down. I wish to hear more about Wonderland," he told her. Sitting down on her bed, he watched her with curious eyes. He had a theory about Alice's madness, but in the case such as this a theory was all that one could get without resulting to extreme measures. Alice was such a beautiful girl. Kind too if you knew how to handle her. He was both intrigued and horrified at the thought of taking her as his next patient.

Alice looked at Matthew "You are still here?" she asked. She had forgotten he was in the room. Grabbing her gown, she put it on the sat on her bed. She smiled at him. "Why must you always ask questions you already know? You were there too, Mr. Hatter. Do you not remember? It was you who gave me my first cup of Wonderland tea and my first kiss." She smiled at the rabbit. "White Rabbit was so shocked because I was so young. But I am a lady now. I haven't kissed another. Well...unless you count that one time with the silly cat. He snuck it in though. I wasn't paying attention. Such a funny cat."

Once more he wrote down what she said. He would make a note so that he could write it down in his personal journal. "So this Hatter," he stopped. She was doing well. He would indulge her for now. "So I was your first kiss then? And by the Cat, do you mean the one who gives you medicine?" If he was in here fraternizing with Alice he would have to talk to him. Not that he could say much, but at least he didn't go around kissing patients.

"What other cat would I talk about? He is the only one I know. Mother never did let me have a cat. Or a rabbit. Or a flamingo." She snickered at that. Hugging her rabbit to her, she leaned against him. "Do you remember my un-birthday? We celebrated it and you gave me cake. Then you leaned in and said, 'Un-birthday kiss for the un-birthday girl. I shall go where none have gone before.' Then you kissed me. It was sweet and short but I never forgot. Never ever."

This wasn't exactly the textbook doctor patient relationship, but it wasn't as if textbooks really mattered to him. He wrapped an arm around her, still writing while he did so. "Your charts indicate that your real birthday is next week," he told her. "Do you wish to celebrate it?" She was talking about a kiss which he never gave her. He was slightly concerned about how much she seemed to recall said kiss and enjoyed it. Perhaps it was this incident in her mind.... No, he had a much more logical conclusion.

"Do not be silly. The only ones who celebrates my birthday are those who are not from Wonderland. Un-birthdays are so much more fun, Mr. Hatter. You should know. You came up with it." She looked up at him and placed her hand on her head once more. The room phased in her eyes and she could swear he had a top hat on then it suddenly vanished. "Mr. Hatter, if I return to Wonderland, will you kiss me again on my un-birthday now that I am a lady?"

He sighed, but offered her a smile. He did not like to indulge her in such fantasies, but it was hard not to. "Yes," he told her. "I shall. However, I will also give you a kiss on your real birthday, if you will let me speak to the White Rabbit for a little bit."

Alice pulled from him and hugged her rabbit tightly. "Why must you be so jealous? The White Rabbit is my friend! I must talk to him. Don't you understand!? He will get me to Wonderland so that we can have adventures again. Don't you want me to return, Mr. Hatter?" She started tapping her head. "What is wrong with my head? It is so fuzzy. So very fuzzy." She laid her head on her pillow. The room phases again and she could smell cake and tea. Mushrooms covered the ground with talking flowers and lovely patterns. "Wonderland...have I found you at last?" She looked at her rabbit. "When will you speak to me again, White Rabbit? When can I return?"

Matthew stroked her head as she laid down. He was losing her. "Rest, Alice. We will speak again in the morning." Taking his notebook, he turned off her light and shut the door. After he locked it, he shook his head. Such a waste....

Going to his office, he pulled out his leather bound journal and began transcribing what Alice told him. He added the part of her first kiss into the section labeled "Fact of Wonderland". Inside the journal were all his notes about her, as well as several pictures she had drawn of her 'friends' most of which were just distorted workers from the asylum. Rubbing his temples, he checked the time. It was late. Well, at least there was always tomorrow.

Alice stared at the wall. Though to her, she saw the looking glass and the world of Wonderland. Her eyes were heavy and she hugged her rabbit tighter. "Mr. Cat..where are you? Won't you show me the way?" she whispered. Her eyes closed and everything went black. Sleep wasn't welcome. Not that night.

Matthew woke with a start as his phone rang. He checked the time only to realize that he'd fallen asleep at his desk. "What a weird dream," he muttered, shaking off the grogginess of his dream. Something about tea.... Fixing his glasses, he chose to ignore his call. Taking out the syringe once more, he filled it with a new liquid and started to Alice's room. "Morning Alice. New medicine time," he said cheerfully. "You know the routine. Undress and let me look at you."

Alice turned to him in her bed. "Mr. Hatter?" she said. Sitting up in her bed, she pulled the rabbit with her by its ears. "Still...you do not bring tea." She stood and let her gown fall to the floor.

"Yes, well I-" Matthew paused as he looked over her. Reaching out he took her arm. There was another cat scratch on it. "Where did you get this?"

Alice yawned and shrugged. "He must have come again...but you made me sleep. I keep missing him. I'll never get to Wonderland if you keep drugging me."

Matthew frowned. More of her delusions. "Well sit down so that I can give you your medicine." He wiped her arm once more and pushed the needle into her. "I might have used too much acid in this one. Let me know if your flesh starts to heat up."

Alice quickly pulled back and threw the needle out of her arm. It broke on the floor and she cradled her arm with a whimper. "Why did you do that?" she asked. "Why do you want to hurt me?" She looked at her arm at all the blood. "You are a horrible person...you were never like that before...Mr. Cat will not take kindly to this! You will pay dearly!" she threatened with dark eyes.

"Damn it, Alice!" Matthew looked at the needle. Part of it had broken off in her arm. Pushing her down on the bed, he quickly straddled her hips as he tried to pry her hand away from her arm. "I have to get the needle out. Stop struggling or it's going to hurt worse."

"Get off!" she screamed. "Mr. Cat! Mr. Cat!" she cried over and over as she fought against him. Blood soaked everything as her tears flew about her. "Why, Mr. Hatter? Why?"

He sighed. He didn't have time for this. "Happy un-birthday, Alice!" He leaned forward and kissed her gently to shut her up and calm her down. As she relaxed, he pressed against the flesh of her arm. Once he felt the needle begin the slide toward him, he gripped it and slid the rest of the pointy blade out.

Alice's eyes grew wide at first but slowly closed. Her free arm wrapped around him, pulling him closer. This wasn't like the first time she kissed the Mad Hatter. No, it was much more different, much...much something... She liked it even though her arm was in more pain than imaginable.

Matthew's eyes widened as she wrapped her arm around him and pulled him closer. He hadn't been expecting her to enjoy it so much. She kept kissing him, and he was finding it hard to pull away. "That's enough, Alice," he said softly as he finally pulled back, licking his lips as he did so.

Alice slowly opened her eyes. Her lips were dark red from the pressure. "Mr. Hatter...I shall never forget," she whispered, "my un-birthday gift."

He nodded slowly as he crawled off of her. His coat and shirt were now stained with the blood from her arm. Fixing his glasses, he nodded once more, just to confirm what he had done. "Yes, well...I am glad," he said softly. Reaching down, he used his coat to pick up the pieces of the syringe. After tossing his coat and the syringe into the furnace, he returned with bandages. "Give me your arm, Alice."

She looked at him. A part of her didn't want to trust him, but he was the mad hatter. He was suppose to be a little mad at times. Maybe he was having one of his spells before and made it up in a kiss. She held her arm out for him with a smile. "Will I have another kiss tomorrow on my un-birthday?"

He fixed his glasses once more as the threatened to fall from his nose. He began to sterilize her wound before bandaging it. "Perhaps. If you are a good girl," he said, making certain to focus on the task at hand so that he wouldn't have to look into her pleading and innocent eyes.

Alice pouted. "You were always teasing me. Always telling me 'there is always tomorrow, Alice.' But then you would say tomorrow is today and today is yet tomorrow so I never got to see tomorrow!" She looked at her white hospital gown, now ruined in blood. Her bed was the same and so was some of the floor. "I don't even know if I have ever been to a tomorrow..."

Matthew smirked at this. Well, at least she was correct about that statement. Tomorrow never came, no matter how hard we try to chase it, it is always just out of reach. Like so many other things, it's unattainable. He stroked her hair and made her stand. Grabbing her bloodied gown and sheets he started to the furnace with them.

It was a few moments before he returned with a new bed sheet and gown. "Here," he said. "Put this on." While she did that he began to make her bed again.

"I suppose I forgive you, Mr. Hatter. You are mad after all. Sometimes I forget. Though, this was the first time you causes me harm...usually you just play little tricks on me or tease me..." she said as she put her gown on. She looked him. "Mr. Hatter, why did you try to hurt me? Was it because I keep asking for tea? That isn't my fault. You always have tea...you just won't share anymore. No wonder Mr. Cat visits while you aren't here. You are just no fun anymore." She rubbed the scratch on her arm adoringly. "I am getting closer, White Rabbit," she said and grabbed the rabbit. "Mr. Hatter, I do not want your drugs anymore. They make me tired and I keep missing Mr. Cat when he comes for me."
