Matthew was tugged along by the girl, closing his eyes, he shook his head as he let Mr. Cat fix her shower for her.

Mr. Cat helped Alice washed off and shower but kept the curtain half open so Alice could peek out a few times to make sure Matthew hadn't left. After the shower, Mr. Cat helped her dress and brushed out her hair, by then, Alice was wincing with the pain medication wearing off. He carried her back to her room, fresh sheets and blankets were waiting for her.

"There. Now that you're all taken care of I think it best if you just rest. You're not in any immediate danger, so I can examine you when you wake," he said as he sat beside her.

Alice reached out and took his hand. She just wanted to feel him, to know he was there as her eyes slowly closed. "Keep your promise, Mr. Hatter...don't leave me."

"I'll be back before you wake," he said, his voice soft. She seemed so fragile at the moment. How could he not be tender with her?

"Stay with me," she mumbled and pulled his hand to her body. She was more tired than the thought. Even with the pain coming back, she was able to slip into sleep with ease.

"Not a word," he muttered as he looked back at Mr. Cat, who just chuckled and shook his head.

"She still loves you, even if you are meanie." Sticking out his tongue, he started off, leaving the good doctor to do whatever he wished.

Alice woke in the morning with the rolling waves of pain. She whimpered and pulled at Matthew's arm to wake him as he slept in the chair. Tears clouded her eyes as she looked up at him.

He groaned as he moved. His body felt stiff from sleeping in a chair all night. Taking off his glasses, he rubbed his eyes. "How do you feel?"

Alice pulled at her gown and shifted with a large cry. "It hurts..."

"Would you like some more medicine for the pain?"

She nodded and bit her lip. "Yes...please."

"Okay." He stood, groaning as his body had to move. "I'll be back in a few minutes with your medicine." He left, shutting and locking the door behind him.

Alice shifted and moved to her side. She pulled her rabbit to her and whimpered again. Watching the walls, she felt the fear crawl up her body. She didn't like being alone. Forcing herself to stand, she dashed to the door and fell to her knees in pain as she started beating on it. "Please! Let me out! I don't want to be alone! Please! Mr. Hatter! Mr. Hatter, come back!" she cried.

Matthew opened the door a few minutes later carrying his syringe with him. She seemed oblivious to the change as she started beating on his shirt. "Alice, I told you that I would be back," he said as he stared down at her.

Alice looked up at him with her tears streaking her face. She hugged his leg. "You can't leave me! You promised! Please don't leave me again, I'm afraid!"

"I had to get your medicine," he told her softly. "I'm sorry if I worried you."

She nodded against him. "I forgive you."

"Alice, lay down so that I can give your shot and examine you," he ordered as he started toward her bed.

She wiped her eyes and grabbed the wall to help her stand. Wincing and whimpering, she took small steps to make it to her bed. Finally, after what felt like a journey of sharp knives between her legs, she made it to her bed and laid on her side. Laying on her side was really her only choice.

Wiping off her arm, he pushed the needle into her and watched as the liquid disappeared into her body. After wiping up the small amount of blood, he looked down at her, moving the chair to the foot of her bed. "I'm going to need you to lay on you back."

Wide eyes met his. "What? Why?" she asked in a soft voice. "I don't want to."

"I need to examine you, and that's the easiest way to do it," he explained softly, trying to reassure her that nothing worse than what had already happened was going to occur.

Alice pulled her rabbit to her and slowly moved to her back. She cried softly and closed her eyes tight while she dug her nails into her rabbit and bit her lip. Taking a soft breath, she relaxed herself and prayed the medication would kick in soon.

Matthew hesitated. "This might feel uncomfortable," he told her. Pushing her gown up, he gently began to ease her panties off of her. "I need you to spread your legs for me.”

Alice turned her head to the side and stared hard at the wall. Slowly, her legs parted and again she winced. A blush spread brightly over her cheeks as she thought of him seeing her...it was almost like the forest...if it wasn't for the fact that she was in so much pain and her heart wasn't so conflicted.

He pushed her gown up further.
"I am going to have to touch you to examine the damage," he informed her, wanting her to be prepared when his fingers brushed against her. He spread her lips, inching close to look at her through his glasses. Next he checked her ass, rubbing his finger on the outside area, putting slight pressure on it, surprised when his finger popped in. He quickly pulled it back, shaking his head. "It is not bad," he informed her. "You are stretched out and in pain, but it will pass."

She only nodded and closed her legs quickly. Even though it was like the forest, it didn't feel the same with him talking and staring at her like that.

"How...does it feel?" He looked at her, his face was calm and composed, though his eyes continued to travel over her from behind his glasses.

"It feels like I was raped," she said coldly. She then took a deep breath and looked at him. "How am I to feel?"

He was taken back by her sudden change in attitude. "I meant, do you feel...suicidal over what happened? Angry? Vengeful?"

She looked at the ceiling, thinking for a moment. "Mad...upset...yes...vengeful even. I wish they could feel the pain they caused." She then looked at him again. "But I don't feel I should take my life for something I didn't have control over."

He quirked an eyebrow at this. "Really?" That was...astonishing to him. "Well, then tell me, if you don't feel like you should take your life over something such as this...something that you have no control over. Then why did you try to take your life after your parents died?"

Her head snapped to him. "Don't...don't talk about them. It was different. It was my fault."

"No, it wasn't," he said, slowly stroking her leg to calm her. "You know that, Alice."

She looked away. "I know that I was there and then I left then I came back and they were gone. It was my candle..." She shook her head. "Just...shut up. You don't get to talk about them."

"Well, then why don't you talk about them?" He looked down at her, biting his lip. Her gown was still up and her panties off. He needed to get her proper again.

A single tear fell from the corner of her eye as she stared at the wall. She tried to recall what their faces looked like, but she couldn't. She tried to think of their laugh or smiles or even their voices, but nothing was there. It was just all...gone. She had been stuck in the hospital for six years...most her life was spent behind these walls and yet, she didn't even have one picture of her parents to keep her from forgetting them. Wasn't their death the whole reason she was there?

"I...I can't...remember...."

"You cannot remember your parents, not at all?"

She closed her eyes, trying really hard to think of anything, of any memory with them and yet, all she could remember was the fire and her being sent here. All of her memories were of the hospital and of the four walls she was forced to stay in. She began to cry. "No...nothing. I don't even remember their names..." she whispered.

"Don't cry," he told her. Pulling her gown down, he smoothed it over her. "If you cannot remember them, then why do you let their deaths haunt you so?"

She shook her head violently. "Because it's my fault! It's my fault! It was my candle! And now I can't remember because I have been stuck here too long!"

"What if I got a picture from your aunt?" By this time he'd reached for his clipboard and began writing this down.

Alice pulled her legs to her and curled into a ball.
"She hasn't visited...she hasn't called. No letters....no cards..." Her voice suddenly grew dark. "I hate her."

"Alice," he said in calm and soft voice. "She is the only family you have left."

"Yet...she left me here to die...she doesn't care. And I don't need her. I have you and Mr. Cat. She doesn't even know if I'm still here, but I am. I'm still in this room...the same room she paid for...still here...I'm always here," she said as she glared at the wall.

"It is possible for you to go outside," he said slowly. "But the last time I took you outside you ran away. I cannot have that again."

She looked at him. "I won't run away from you again, Mr. Hatter! Not ever again!"

"Do you promise me, Alice? If you are with me you cannot run away."

She nodded over and over again. "I promise. I'll never run from you again."

"Very well, Alice. I will see if you can't go out to the garden some time," he told her. He stood from his chair and stretched. Reaching down, he held her panties in his hands. "Would you like to put these back on?"

"Are you leaving me?" she asked in a shaky voice, not even caring about her panties.

"I have more work to do," he told her.

"Please!" she begged. "You can't leave me here alone!"

He thought about that for a moment, biting his lip, he looked down at her. "I might can arrange for you to sit with me during one of my sessions. However, that is all. Then you will have to come back to your room while I finish the rest of my work."

She grabbed his coat. "Please...I can't be alone...not ever again."

"The twins will not hurt you, Alice. Never again," he promised.

"It doesn't matter! You promised to always protect me! If you leave, something awful could happen!" she said and pulled at his coat, trying to get him to understand.

"Tell me, Alice. If I let you stay with me today. Will you be quiet in the halls and do as I say?"

"I will not say one word," she said. "Not one single word."

"Very well then. You may follow me today," he informed her. Holding her panties in front of him, he gave her a small smile. "Now, would you like to put on your panties?"

The pain medication was setting in, so she could move about with little pain. Standing, she took her panties and slipped them on then took his hand. "I will do anything you say."

"Good," he nodded slowly. Licking his lips, he tightened his hand on hers as he opened up her door and pulled her through it.

Alice looked down the hall, her bare feet made a soft pitter pattering sound as she walked next to Matthew. Like she promised, she didn't say a word, however, when they passed certain doors and someone started screaming, she jumped and clung tighter to Matthew.

"You're fine," he assured her as she all but clung to his waist as they walked through. "They're screaming at phantoms long dead, perhaps even at me. My patients don't tend to like me."

She looked up at him. Opening her mouth she was about to say that she liked him, but quickly she closed it, remembering her promise to not talk in the halls.

He smirked at this.
"You may speak," he told her. "Just speak softly."

She nodded. "I like you, Mr. Hatter," she whispered. "You are my favorite person."

"Of course you do, Alice," he sighed. Stroking her hair, he ran his fingers through it as they started toward the examination room.

Alice moved her head closer to his hand and smiled. This was her first time out of her room without security in a very long time, except for that time she ran away from Matthew. She felt a littlealmost important.

He looked down as she moved closer to his touch. Shaking his head, he rubbed her head and ear slowly petting her in a sense. She seemed to enjoy it, and it kept her calm well enough.

Smiling, Alice held her rabbit closer to her and began petting it like Matthew patted her. It was the first time she felt that he was really treating her like her real Mad Hatter would treat her. She felt it should always be this way.

His hand stopped as he saw an older man waiting for him at the examination room
. "Alice, please go through that door and sit down. I will be in there in just a few minutes."

She looked up at him. "But I'll be all alone...."

"It will only be for a few minutes," he assured her, rubbing her ear and staring down at her.

"Please, don't be long..." she said. Hesitating, she walked away from him but looked back at him before opening the door and walking in.

Matthew nodded as he turned and walked toward the Director.
"Hello sir," he said, pushing his glasses up his nose as he walked up to him. "What is it?" No point in chit chatting. He only came here when something wasn't going his way.

"Do you want to tell me where the hell Mike and Jason are?"

"I fired them," Matthew told him plainly.

"You what!? Why wasn't I notified? Where are the papers and reports?"

"I'll have them for you at the end of the day," he assured him. "They assaulted a patient, and thus they were fired."

Alice sat down in the room and looked around. There was a lot more to see than what was in her gray room. The walls were white and there were things she had never seen, tools and such. If it wasn't for the fact that she wanted to obey Matthew so much, she would be picking things up and looking at them.

Why haven't they called to report this to me?"

Matthew shrugged.
"They raped a patient. They were probably afraid that you'd file an arrest warrant," he told him.

The Director sighed and shook his head. "Damn it. I'll call them and try to get this mess straightened out."

"Do what you must, sir, but I believe I have already handled the situation thoroughly. I'll have your papers for you at the end of the day. Right now I have patients to attend to." With a nod, he left and entered the room where Alice was.

Alice stood with a smile.
"You were quick. I'm glad."

He smirked at that. "Yes, well, I do aim to please."

She walked over to him and hugged him. "I am so happy I get to be with you today, Mr. Hatter."

He froze as she hugged him. He slowly put an arm around her and patted her back. "Yes, well, one day out might do you good."

"Just being with you does so much good. I'm safe when I'm with you."

He looked down at her. "You are the first patient to ever say that."

"I am the only patient to like you too," she pointed out.

"Yes, well, apparently you are a lot of things," he said after a moments contemplation.

"Is that a bad thing?"
