"I've sat with you on occasion when you're in here," Matthew said, not liking everything that he was hearing about how great the nurse was.
"Yes, you sat here to tell me why I was in here and ask me a million questions," she said rolling her eyes. "Doing your job is not counted as 'being a friend.'"
"I bandage your wounds when you get hurt. I hold you when you're upset. I take care of you. Does that not count for anything?"
"Again, it's part of your job." She pulled her legs to herself and hugged them. "Mr. Cat does all that stuff even when he's not suppose to be working. He does it because he cares about me and...maybe even loves me...I'm not sure. But I do know that if all else fails, it will be him who risks everything to make sure I'm safe and taken care of."
Matthew frowned. He went to fix his glasses only to remember that they weren't there. "Alice I-" He tried to think of what he could say. Why did her opinion matter so much to him? It was ridiculous. She as a patient. His patient. He shouldn't care about anything other than her health and well being. Looking at her, he quirked an eyebrow. "Are you still sore?"
She had completely forgot about the rape. Now she was tense since he mentioned it. "No, not really."
He nodded. "That's good. I'm glad that the...areas are healing," he told her.
She pulled up the sleeves of his shirt and looked at her arms. Bruises were forming. "Those brutes did a number on me when I fought against them. Mr. Caterpillar is going to pay."
Taking his glasses, he moved over her to look at her arms. "Yeah, it seems that they really did a number on you. As I said, when we get out I'll take care of this."
"Yeah, well you are still going to need proof. No one is going to believe you if you tell them your crazy patient told you what was going on," she said. "Seems odd though that it's been going on for six years and no one bothered to really see it. Everyone just thought it was natural for me to be delusional."
"Well, you didn't exactly inspire confidence in people. What with all the biting, clawing, and throwing shoes," he told her. "Besides, most people simply come to expect that of their patients."
"I wasn't delusional when I got here, there was no reason for me to suddenly show signs of it. Personally, I think doctors are stupid. It's not hard to listen to someone, even if they are crazy and yet not one doctor I have had actually cared enough to hear what I have to say. Then again, you know what that say, if you don't have a heart to heal you mind as well had the brain for the crazies."
"Actually I've never heard that one before," he said with a frown. "And despite what you may think everyone here is busy taking care of patients 24/7 just about. So don't blame the good doctors and nurses, because they are simply doing their jobs."
"I'm not blaming the nurses, just the doctors. All of them, including you are suppose to look after me. It's because of people like you that I got drugged while sleeping. I'm not even safe in my sleep in this place. You are suppose to protect me," she said coldly. She needed someone to blame even if it wasn't his fault directly, she felt he should have noticed the sighs. After all, she did and she was suppose to be the crazy one.
"I can't be with you 24/7," he told her. "Anyone with a key can get in your room. How was I suppose to know that someone was drugging you? If I had known I can assure you I would have protected you from it."
"Blah blah." She made her hands look like they were talking. "I promise you that I don't believe you."
His eyes narrowed. "And why is that? I've done my best to do what I can for you."
"You've done the best you can for your job. Not for me."
"I've tried!" he snapped. Looking away quickly as he did so. He wasn't suppose to lose his cool like this. "It is not as if I can just let you go free."
"I never once asked you to, did I!?" she screamed.
"No, but that is what you want. Is it not?"
"I want a lot of things," she said looking away. "That doesn't mean I'll get them or ask for them."
"Well, tell me what you want," he said after a moment.
She smirked at him. "Nothing you can give me."
"Try me," he said.
"Back off doctor man. I don't want your shoulder to cry on," she rolled her eyes once more.
"I didn't say that you had to cry on my shoulder, though you have done that on more than one occasion. I simply wanted to know what it was that you wanted."
"Ok, fine," she said. "I want to go to school. I want to see the world. I want to stay in Wonderland forever after I fix it. I want to know what it's like to fall in love. I want to get married. I want to have kids. I want to be free. I want to have a house far away from everyone. I want to forget that I killed my parents. I want to climb a tree for the first time. I want to fly in an airplane. I want to go camping. I want to meet other people my age. I want to be normal. And I want my parents back. I can go on forever, but I know I don't have enough time in the world to say them all."
He listened to that, taking a mental note of everything she said. "Well, while there are some things beyond my power that I can't do, I believe I can help you out with a few of those."
"Which ones?"
"Climbing a tree. Meeting kids your own age. Going to school. Falling in love. Stuff like that," he said as he counted them off one by one on his fingers.
"I can't go to school when I'm considered insane. And I can't fall in love when I don't know anyone. And I can't meet people my own age because I'm not allowed visitors." She hated her aunt for telling the director that.
He shrugged. "There are loopholes around everything. You just need to know where to push and pull."
"Good luck with that."
"Oh ye of little faith," he smirked. "Don't you trust me?"
"No," she said honestly. "Why should I trust you?"
"Let's see. I take care of you. I stopped the two goons from raping you. I came here to get you out. I would have figured that by now you would trust me. However, if you do not then I won't even bother trying to help you."
"You didn't stop them. Stopping them would be making sure contact wasn't made," she pointed out. "And I have no reason to trust you when you only did a hand full of things out of three years."
"Fine. Then I won't stick my neck out so that you can come with me to the high school next week."
"I told you I didn't need your help," she said. Though...high school did sound fun...she would be so far behind though...would they even let her go? What if her aunt found out?
"You don't need it, but you want it," he said as he relaxed.
She laid back. Maybe she did want it. But she wasn't going to ask for it.
"Since we're here. I want to take a look to see how you're healing...."
Alice shot up. "What?!" she yelled. She back up to the wall. "No! I was delusional the first time and didn't know what the heck you were doing. There is no way you are touching me now"
He rolled his eyes. "I won't be 'doing' anything. Now that you've healed up I need to make certain that nothing was torn. You were too tender that following day to do a proper examination. If you wish we can wait till you're back in room, but the fact remains that it needs to be done."
She pointed her finger at him. "You are going nowhere near my...no touchy zone!"
"It's nothing I haven't seen before," he assured her. "You want to have kids, correct? Well, you might not be able to if that area becomes infected."
"I said I WANT kids. That doesn't mean I'll have them." She pulled her legs to herself. "I said no."
He sighed. "I will have to check as your doctor. But if you want to wait that is fine."
"Wait? No. You don't understand. You no touchy...ever."
"This coming from the girl who wanted me to have sex with her? I am still your doctor, and I do have to examine you from time to time."
"That was before I decided that a doctor/patient relationship was all we should have," she pointed out.
"Well even in a relationship such as that I still have to examine your body," he pointed out.
"If you touch me, I will bite you."
"Why's that?" He asked, sitting up and looking at her. "If you're wounded, I'm suppose to take care of you."
"I'll have Mr. Cat look at it," she said pushing some hair behind her ear.
"What? Why would you want him instead of me? He's not even allowed to do that!"
"You seem pretty defensive about that," she said as she looked him over. "Are you jealous or something? And he's gay, so it's different."
"How is it different? Just because he doesn't want you?" He shook his head and pushed himself against the wall. "He's not allowed to. So he isn't. He wouldn't even know what to look for."
"Are you saying you want me?" she smirked. "And yes he does. He's in medical school. He said he's working hard so that one day he can become my doctor."
"I'm saying that he won't and can't do anything like that without my consent; and he will never get it," he mumbled.
"Why!?" she asked. "And answer my first question! Quit ignoring my questions all the time!"
"I'm not ignoring your question," he told her. "I just simply do not wish to answer it and put myself into a situation which could cause more trouble for both of us."
"Then answer why he can't examine me! I'd feel more comfortable with it and he knows what he's doing. One day he's going to be my doctor so he mind as well get some practice!"
"He will never be your doctor as long as I am here," he told her. "You are my patient; and I'm not going to hand you over to anyone."
"You still haven't answered why! Why? Why the heck are you so protective over me suddenly!?" She demanded answers.
"Because you are special to me, Alice. That's why."
"That's not a good enough answer."
"What do you want me to say? That I'm getting too close to you? That I shouldn't allow myself to be attracted to you? That I feel like I'm going crazy? Take your pick."
"I want the truth," she stated simply. "I just want to know how you feel. No, I NEED to know how you feel."
He groaned. "I'm attracted to you, Alice. I enjoy your presence and I like you. Of course that is the insane part of all of this because I'm your doctor."
Alice moved closer to him. "What's insane about liking a person? Why should it matter who I am?"
"Because I could have my license revoked for something like that," he told her. "Hell, I could be thrown in a place like this."
She moved a little closer. "So...what do you intend to do? The smart thing would be to give me over to another doctor."
"Yes, well, I'm a genius but I never claimed to be smart." He looked up, noticing how close she suddenly was.
"You haven't answered the question. What are you going to do?"
"I haven't decided, yet," he said truthfully.
"All the more reason to let Mr. Cat care for me until you do," she said and pressed her back against the wall next to him.
"No," he said quickly. "I want to remain as your doctor."
"I don't understand why. You are jeopardizing you career."
"I just, don't want anyone else to touch you," he said slowly.
"Why?" She was so curious. She never had a boy like her before.
"Because...I feel like you're mine," he muttered. "So I don't want anyone else having access to your body."
Hesitantly, she moved her hand over his. "The Mad Hatter asked me to be only his...should I tell him yes or tell him that I have a chance with you?"
