Alice woke when the door opened. She looked up and saw Mr. Cat smiling at her and holding a large tray while a large rock held the door open. She rubbed her eyes and sat up. "Mr. Cat...I'm so happy you've come."
He smirked as he saw who she was laying on. "Yes, well, I came a little early. Everyone has been looking for the good doctor. It seems that I'm the one who found him."
Matthew's eyes shot open as he heard his voice. Looking down at Alice and then to the nurse, he shook his head. "It's about time," he muttered, trying to keep his face as calm and composed as he possibly could.
Alice stood and looked at the food. She smiled. "I'm starving!" She kissed his cheek. "You are my savior!"
He smiled brightly at that. "Well, I do aim to please," he said cheerfully.
"Yeah, well see if you can fix my glasses," Matthew said as he handed his broken glasses to the nurse.
He looked over them and shrugged. "I'll see what I can do." He gave Matthew a fanged grin.
"Good. I'm taking Alice back to her room." Taking her tray, he stopped. "Alice, lead me to your room."
Alice smiled and took Matthew's hand. "Sure, Mr. Hatter. Follow me." She winked at Mr. Cat and started down the halls toward her room.
Mr. Cat smiled warmly, giving her a devilish grin as she walked off. "Play nice!"
Matthew sighed. "This food does smell good."
"Yeah, Mr. Cat makes my food himself. I don't get the mush the others get. He likes me healthy since I'm the youngest here," she said as she turned a corner. Her eyes scanned everything, praying the director wouldn't see her.
Matthew nodded slowly. "I guess that I should start having him prepare my food. Normally I just get the slop that everyone else eats."
"Hey! I'm the only one that gets his tender love and care," she laughed. She opened her door smiling, happy that the director was nowhere to be found.
However, when she pushed open the door, she saw the director sitting on her bed. Instantly, she moved behind Matthew, as if hiding herself.
"Ah, Matthew there you are," the Director smiled. "What happened to you?"
"I went to check on Alice, and got locked in the room with her," he told him. He moved and handed the tray of food to Alice while taking a step forward. "Is there anything that I can help you with?"
"No, I just wanted to check on Alice after her little incident today."
"Yes, well, Alice is my patient. So I'll be checking on her."
The Director's smile faded. "This is my hospital. My authority overrides everything."
"Unfortunately that only overrides a scenario when your input is needed. Now is not that time."
Alice stayed in the doorway, thinking long and hard about running. Even though Matthew had promised to protect her, she couldn't help but be terrified of the director. He had so much power...and with her aunt working with him...there was not limit to what power he held over Alice. The tray shook in her hands as she looked down the hall. Would she be able to make it to the front door before someone caught her?
The Director frowned at this. His eyes narrowing while he stood and stretched. "Unfortunately, Matthew, you don't get a say in this."
"And why is that?"
"Because I'm removing you as Alice's doctor. I don't think that you're what's best for her now."
"How can you say that? Look at her? She's talking normally. Acting normally. No longer biting people. I'm the best thing for her."
"Well, I'm the one who decides that."
Run! RUN! Her mind screamed at her. Without Matthew, she was going to suffer more than ever. She glanced at Matthew and dropped her tray. Before it even hit the ground, she was running. As soon as she heard it crash, she ran faster. Her rabbit's ears were tight in her hand as she dashed for the front door. Would she make it? Would she ever be safe?
Matthew winced as he heard the tray hit the ground. He turned in the direction he thought she would head in, but the Director was already pushing past him to go after her. "Alice!" he yelled.
Mr. Cat leaned on the door release button, the familiar buzzer sounding as the door's locking mechanisms released.
Alice glanced at him for only a second before pushing the door open. The dark sky poured over her, but she didn't stop to enjoy the stars. She didn't look back, she didn't stop even when her feet screamed. She didn't know where she was going, but she knew she couldn't stop until all the voices from the asylum were gone.
The Director glared at Mr. Cat as he ran past him. "You just let her out!"
"Oops! My bad," he smirked.
Alice ran into some woods. She was alone, and cold. She could see her breath and she remember it was October...it would snow in a matter of weeks. She was wearing only a pair of panties and Matthew's shirt. She didn't know where she was or where she could go. Slowly, she moved to a tree and sat down, trying to catch her breath. She was free...by now what?
Mr. Cat tossed Matthew something as he moved past the door. The glasses hit him in the face, but he quickly recovered as he jostled them around and put them on his face. "Where is she?"
"Outside," he said with a worried face. "She's going to freeze."
"I'll find her," he told him. Already the alarms were going off as orderlies and nurses started to go after her.
Alice heard the alarms in the distance. She was starving and tired along with cold but she had to carry on. Standing, she held her rabbit close and started running again. "Mr. Hatter...I'm lost..." she whispered.
"Alice! Alice! Come back!" Matthew yelled. Staring up at the sky, he cursed as clouds covered the moon making it almost impossible to see in the darkness of the night.
"Damn it! See, this is what happens when you get to close to patients," the Director cursed.
"No, this is what happens when you drug them to keep them loopy!"
The Director looked back at him, his eyes glaring daggers into him. "You don't know what you're talking about."
"I have proof," he hissed. "You'll be in jail by the time I'm through."
Alice tripped and hit the ground. She skid across the ground. Crying, she could feel her knee stinging with fresh blood pouring down her leg. Her hand touched it and winced. Looking at her hand she noticed a lot of blood. "I'm lost! I'm lost!" she screamed. Once more she stood, but hit the ground again. She had twisted her ankle. She crawled to a tree and huddled there, hugging her rabbit and rubbing her body to keep warm. She could hear the whistles of doctors and nurses checking areas. She covered her mouth to muffle her cries so she couldn't be found. She just couldn't go back knowing Matthew wouldn't be her doctor. No matter what she would do, she would never be safe.
"Alice. Come out, come out, wherever you are." The Director's voice was like a psychotic song as he searched for her. In the darkness of the night, he heard a muffled cry. His lips curled back as he pulled out the syringe and moved it behind his back. "It's okay, Alice," he whispered. "You can have your doctor."
She was terrified. No, she was beyond that. She feared for her life at this point. Without anyone to protect her from the director, there was no telling what he would really do. Her aunt didn't really care what would happen to her so her death would come as little shock. Her hand tightened over her mouth and she curled under the tree. Her eyes were blurred with thick tears and she wanted to scream, but she knew he was close.
His hand reached out from behind the tree and grabbed her, pushing her to the ground as he forced himself on top of her. "Be a good girl and take your medicine!" He smirked, glaring down at her, he easily over powered her. "Your aunt pays me good money to keep you insane. I'm not going to let you off so easily!"
And with that Alice screamed. It was easily the loudest, scariest, and tear jerking scream heard in history. She wanted anyone and everyone to hear. She wanted the world to know how terrified she was.
He forced the needle into her arm, a cold smirk on his face.
"I think that's enough."
The Director didn't look back as Matthew made his way toward them. "I'm simply giving a patient her medicine," he told him as she struggled, the needle broke, causing lacerations on her arm. "Damn it! Stay still!"
He reached out to back hand her to get her to calm down. However, as he did he felt a pain in his body.
Matthew stood behind him, a scalpel in his hand and a smile on his face. Blood poured from the Director's back as he started stabbing him repeatedly in the back. "I can't have you hurt, Alice," he said cheerfully. "She belongs to me and only me."
He shoved the Director off of her, his hand still moving to stab him in the back while the Director started to crawl away from him. Grabbing his head, he slid the blade across the Director's throat and turned back to Alice. Tilting his head to the side, he smiled at her while wiping the scalpel off on his coat. "I'm here, Alice. You're safe now."
Alice's eyes widened in fear. Her body screamed in pain with her knee messed up and ankle twisted and now a broken needle in her arm. Never before had she seen Matthew look so...mad. It scared her. More than anything from Wonderland. She started to back away, her body dragging on the ground as she tried to stay conscious. "Please...don't..." she whispered as her eyes started to close. "Don't hurt...me..." She reached out for her rabbit just as she blacked out.
Matthew slipped the scalpel into his coat pocket and leaned down toward her. "You're mine."
"Alice," Matthew called, softly as he stroked her hair. She was laying in her bed, the sun peeking through her windows. "Alice, it's time to wake up."
Alice's eyes fluttered open. She moved her hand to her eyes to shield the sun from her. As her armed moved she winced then last night's events came rushing back. She shot up from the bed. Glancing at Matthew she moved away from his sharply, landing on the ground hard. She cried out. Her knee had been bandaged and her ankle had a wrap around it.
"Hey, easy," he said, moving to help her up. "You got pretty banged up last night. I brought you back and bandaged you up. You're safe. There's no need to worry."
Alice fought against him. "No!" she yelled. "Don't touch me!" She backed up to the wall and watched him closely. Her breathing was hard as she ran her hand over the wound over her arm. It wasn't a dream. She had been stuck with the needle and it broke in her...Matthew killed the director. But...she wasn't fuzzy. She was thinking clear.
He quirked an eyebrow, obviously confused as to why she was acting this way. "Alice, what's wrong? It's just me."
"If you touch me, I will scream!" she threatened. "I saw you! I saw you kill him! I saw you stab him over and over..." Though...he saved her...
He shook his head slowly. "I don't know what you're talking about. I stabbed who?"
"The director!" she yelled. "I was still conscious in the woods! I saw you stab him in the back then cut his throat after he stuck me!"
"Alice, I didn't kill the Director," he told her. "I shoved him off of you. I threatened him. Then I brought you back here."
She shook her head vigorously. "No! I saw it...all the blood...it was everywhere! And your face...you were...you were...mad!"
"I don't know what you're talking about. I'm not mad, Alice. Nor did I hurt him. If I hurt him I'd be in a straight jacket!"
"But I saw it! I saw it!" she insisted.
"He tried to drug you again. Perhaps some of it got in your system and caused you hallucinations?"
"Hallucinations?" she mumbled. That would make so much sense. After all...Matthew wouldn't hurt a fly. And especially not her. He cared about her. Right? She looked over at him, her eyes washing over him. She had never seen his face so crazy like that time and yet as she looked at him now, he looked normal. Perhaps it was the drug. Perhaps her mind only saw the worst because she was so scared. "Oh..." she whispered. "It...seemed so real..."
"Most hallucinations are," he told her. "I'm sorry if I worried you, but you should know that I wouldn't hurt anything. I'm too much of a wuss." He pushed his glasses up on his nose and smiled.
She pushed her hair from her face. "Yes...I suppose..." She couldn't help the doubt in her heart. It just felt so real. Slowly, very very slowly, she started moving to him.
He stood there, feeling very like someone who is around a skittish deer. He didn't make any sudden movements. Instead he just stood still, watching her as she moved toward him. "Now that you're awake I wanted to take a closer look at your wounds."
She nodded slowly. "Ok," she whispered. "I'm sorry...I accused you. It really did seem real."
He smirked as he saw who she was laying on. "Yes, well, I came a little early. Everyone has been looking for the good doctor. It seems that I'm the one who found him."
