"It was all planned out," he sighed. "You would live with either me or Mr. Cat. We'd take you to school, then pick you up and bring you here while we worked. You could do your school work, hang out with friends. Have a normal life."
"I'm flattered you wanted to help."
"I wanted to do much more than help."
She nodded and pulled her legs to her as she hugged herself.
"If you were away from this place...we could actually be a couple."
Slowly her head turned to him. "I guess...that would have been nice...and normal..."
"Oh there wouldn't be too many things normal about it. But it would have been nice."
She looked back at the ground. Closing her eyes, she took a deep breath. "I do...love you..." she whispered. "But I think it's best if we never see each other again."
He froze as he heard this come from her lips. "And why is that?"
Tears slipped from her eyes. "I killed my first love...I do not want to risk my second."
He reached out and wiped the tears. "You won't kill me."
"You can't say that..." she whispered. "I never thought I would kill the Mad Hatter or the White Rabbit...but I did...I held his body in my arms while he bleed out whispering riddles and love. I can't do that a second time."
"You won't. I’m not the Mad Hatter. I won't let you kill me."
She leaned over and pressed her lips to his for a few seconds. "I love you so much, Matthew...please don't ask to stay..."
"I am asking," he told her as she broke the kiss.
"And I'm saying no..."
"That may be, but you're in my hospital. I'm going to do as I please."
"I'm not going to tell the doctor I want you to be my doctor."
"Then I'll tell her that I'm abusing my authority and taking you back."
She reached up to touch his face but pulled back. "Why are you so bent on having me?"
"Because...I care about you."
"I know you do, but caring about someone doesn't make them stick around after they tried to kill them."
"You always told me I was a little mad."
"We all are...that's not the point."
"Then what is the point?"
She sighed and grabbed the bandages. "Nothing." She handed them to him. "You can bandage me now."
"Are you going to bite me if I do?"
"Maybe."
He smirked. "I'll take those odds." Looking at her, he took a deep breath. "Don't take this...just...take off your dress so I don't have to work around it."
She slipped the straps off her shoulder and let the silk fall off her.
His eyes took in her form, still covered in the lingerie from earlier. His eyes traveled from her uplifted breasts to her thong, which barely covered her lips. He swallowed hard. This was going to be tougher than he thought.
Alice held out her hand for him to bandage first. "In Wonderland...my hand was in stitches and the Hatter was covered in cuts..."
He wrapped the bandage around it. "Really?" He tried to keep his eyes on her hand, but it was hard. "The bandages are soaked in disinfectant so it's going to sting."
She nodded but didn't wince. The pain wasn't as bad as other pain. While he wrapped her hand, she told him of everything that happened in Wonderland.
"So, he just slit his throat...and then he turned into you?"
Alice wiped her eyes for the millionth time. "Yes..."
"That is...awful," he said slowly. His hands worked to bandage her legs, moving up slowly to get the ones on her thighs.
She watched him, her body covered in bandages and dried blood. "I have to bring him back," she whispered.
He reached up and wiped her cheeks with his hands. "I know you will."
Alice's eyes drifted to his. Her heart hurt so bad. "I feel like I'm missing a part of me...I miss him so much...why does everyone I love die at my hands?"
He shook his head slowly. "That is something I can't answer."
She turned from him and pulled her legs to herself once more after he finished. She laid her head on her knees and thought of the look on the Hatter's face as he died. She didn't understand why he changed into a version of her and she didn't understand why he slit his throat. She didn't understand why the White Rabbit had to die either. She didn't understand a lot of things. But she didn't want to return to Wonderland until she figured out what to do. She just hoped the Cheshire Cat would be waiting for her...
He was trying to figure out why the Hatter killed himself. He knew that he was hopelessly devoted to Alice, but to kill himself and then turn into her? It didn't make any sense, even to him. Certainly he was a part of her...perhaps that was it. Maybe...parts of her had died. Looking at her small frame, he found himself wrapping an arm around her, wincing at the movement.
Alice pulled from him and reached for her torn dress. She put it back on. "I don't want my doctor to show up and see me naked with you."
He sighed. "I was simply trying to let you rest against me."
"You should pull up your pants...and you shouldn't want me to rest on you. You are a doctor," she reminded him.
"I'd rather not move at the moment," he told her. "The pain medication has worn off.... And as a doctor I want to make certain that you're sleeping properly."
She glared at him. "You really have no tolerance to pain. I didn't even get any pain medication and you don't see me crying over the wounds." She then looked at her hand. "There is worse pain than that of physical."
"Unlike you, I am not accustomed to being thrashed about or cut on a nearly daily basis," he informed her. Laying his head back, he watched her carefully. "You'll get him back."
She grabbed his hands and pulled him to his feet. "It's not getting him back that I'm worried about...it's how I'll bring him back. I can kill the Red Queen like planned...but it won't guarantee his return," she said. Slowly, she started pulling his pants up. "I...I don't really know what I'll do without him..."
He bit his lip as she pulled his pants up. God it hurt. He hadn't been joking when he told her she'd hit a nerve in his leg. He reached out and put a hand on her shoulder, both to steady himself and to comfort her. "Don't think about it. Thinking about it will just make it worse. You'll get him back, that's all that matters."
Slowly she pulled his pants over his hips and tucked his shirt in then did them. After fixing his belt she helped him sit then she sat a good few feet from him. "It just..." she placed her hand on her heart, "it hurts so much. I didn't know that a heart could literally break and I didn't know how much I truly loved him until he was no more."
He looked almost hurt by her words, but he kept that to himself. "I see.... I wish I had a drug to help with the pain, but unfortunately I do not."
"I don't believe you can cure a heartbreak..." She wished she had her rabbit. "I guess I will have a lot to talk about with my new doctor. Maybe I'll get lucky and she will listen and care."
His jaw dropped, his eyes narrowing as he heard this. "And what exactly did I do?"
"I didn't mean to offend you," she said quickly. "But you have to admit, you paid more attention when I was offering you my body."
She wanted to say more but the door opened. A young woman with loosely curled red hair and a tight fitting black dress with heels and a doctor coat walked in. She held a clipboard like Matthew always did. She was shocked to see Matthew sitting next to Alice and the strait jacket off her. Alice stood. Behind the doctor was an orderly holding the door.
"Hello, Dr. Hatsfield, I didn't know you would be in here. Is...everything ok?" the young woman asked.
"I didn't try to kill him if that's what you mean," Alice said sharply.
The doctor turned to her. She moved over to Alice and grabbed her hand, looking at the bandage. "I'm going to put some stitches in your hand to help the healing process." Her eyes met Alice's. "I hope we will have a good relationship, Alice. I'm Dr. Till and I will be your doctor for now on."
Alice studied her face as she pulled her hand from her. She looked nice enough but looks could be deceiving. She was a little shocked that her new doctor just walked up to her with little fear considering Alice's history with doctors.
"Everything is fine, doctor," he said as he used the wall for support. "I will let you two get acquainted. Keep me briefed on her progress." He didn't look back at Alice as he limped to the door. He didn't even look back at her as he paused. "Her rabbit is in her room. Have someone get it for her."
"Alice will be going back to her room," she said. The doctor waved her hand and the orderly walked over to Alice. "He's only here to make sure we both are safe," she assured Alice. "Follow me."
Alice did as she was told and followed her doctor out. The whole time her doctor looked at her clipboard at Alice's papers. "I see you have only one nurse. I'm going to assign another one to you...a girl seems more appropriate. I don't know why you have a male nurse."
"I love my nurse. He's good to me," Alice objected.
"I'm sure he is, but he has a lot of overtime because of you so we need to lighten his load a bit. A new nurse will allow him to have some days off and a life outside this asylum," she said. "There is a lot of disorganization in this place and I'm here to make sure that you are given the best care with the little offered. Trust me, Alice, I will take very good care of you. Though, I'm changing your medication and your room."
"My...room?" Alice asked.
"The room you have has a window and you escaped once. I don't want you to get anymore ideas from a window."
"But it's barred!" Alice cried.
"It's better this way and I'm sure it will help your progress. I'm send your new nurse to stitch your hand," she said and opened Alice's new room door. Alice walked in, it was so dark. The light came on and on her bed was her rabbit. "I took your hair brush. I promise to give it back if you show improvement. I don't really know why a doctor would give you something like that for your birthday anyways."
Alice walked to her bed and grabbed her rabbit. "Will...I see Mr. Cat today?"
"Mr. Cat?"
"My nurse..."
"Yes, if he decides to stop by after his shift." She turned to leave. "Oh and Alice," Alice looked up at her. "Happy Birthday."
Alice watched the door close.
"So, what do you think of Alice?" Matthew was leaning against her door, both for support and just to relax. He was trying to fix his glasses.
"She has a lot of dependent issues but that is to be expected. I'll be a better evaluation tomorrow when we have our session." She looked at him. "I have to ask why you gave her a silver brush knowing she is a patient with a history of violence."
"Because up until yesterday she hadn't done anything extremely violent in my presence. She was getting...better, for a lack of a better word. I thought it would make a nice gift."
"It wasn't very wise," she pointed out. "But no worries. I'm correcting it." She smiled when a female nurse walked over. "Ah, perfect timing. Alice is waiting for you." The nurse looked apprehensive. "She won't bite and an orderly will be with you." After the nurse and orderly went in Alice's room, Dr. Till turned back to Matthew. "Can you explain to my why she was put in such a situation yesterday? You were found in a chair, in a strait jacket with the ground covered in glass. Honestly, I doubt she could set that up all on her own."
He fixed his glasses and put them on his face. "Where is her nurse? She prefers him; and he's never needed an orderly when taking care of her." He deliberately avoided her other question. "And how did you correct my mistake?"
"She's my patient now," she said with a sigh. "And I'm sorry to tell you, but I don't work for you, I work for an agency. I'm going to have to report the fact that you were found in such a way. Now that Alice is mine, I must tell you that you have no right to her. In fact, if you try to prevent me from doing what I think is best for her, she will be moved to a different asylum...or you will." She started walking off. "Have a good night, Dr. Hatsfield."
Alice sat quietly while her nurse worked on her hand. She flinched as the needle kept working into her. Every time she did, the nurse would jump as if Alice was going to hit her. "If I scare you...maybe you shouldn't be my doctor..."
Matthew balled his hand into a fist. He was actually shaking. His eyes narrowed as he watched her leave. "We'll see, doctor," he whispered.
Finally the nurse finished stitching her hand. She didn't say one word to Alice the whole time. And she left just the same way, the orderly following behind. Alice looked at her hand then pulled her rabbit to her. New room, new nurse, new doctor...some birthday...
Matthew waited for the staff to leave before going to Alice's room. It wasn't as if he didn't have a key to it. "So, how do you enjoy your new doctor?"
"What are you doing here?" Alice asked. She was dressed in a clean gown and new panties. Her bra, thong, and dress were taken. She watched him move about but even with the small light on, it was hard to see him. The light didn't light up the whole room, only the area she slept in.
"I wanted to make certain that she didn't take your rabbit," he told her as he took a step toward her.
"I think she is a good doctor...she does a lot that makes a lot of sense...even if I don't agree with everything..."
"I see.... Well, that is good. As long as you are happy with her, Alice..."
"I never said I was happy. I have no window...I don't get my brush and I don't get Mr. Cat to myself anymore. It's just a lot of change."
He nodded slowly. "May I sit?" He motioned to her bed. He couldn't help but notice that out of all the things she missed he wasn't one of them.
She moved over and let him sit down. "You shouldn't be here."
"I'm flattered you wanted to help."
"I wanted to do much more than help."
