Sammy nodded. "Yes. We're going to be going to a very public place."
Alice walked over and grabbed the wig. She had become a pro at fixing it to her head. While she put it on in the mirror she looked at Sammy. "Where are we going? Am I dressed ok for it?"
"You look fine," he assured her. "We're going to meet someone about your future."
Alice ran her hands through the black curls and put on some light makeup Sammy had shown her how to do. "My future?" She groaned and turned to him. "I'm not going to high school."
"Don't worry. It's not high school," he assured her. Taking her hand, he made her sit on the bed. "One day, Alice. You will want a house of your own, and a life of your own. I just want to make certain that you'll be able to make that a reality."
Alice blew up and the curls moved from her face. "Is this your way of saying you are kicking me out?"
He laughed and shook his head. "Not on your life, Alice! I want you here as long as you want to be here."
She smiled. "Oh thank God! For a moment I thought you were sending me back to the asylum."
"Please," he said with a roll of his eyes. "I so don't even want to go back myself. Monday is going to be so boring without you there."
She pressed her forehead to his. "I suppose I can go to this meeting then. If you really want me to."
"I'm glad, because I think you'll enjoy it," he promised.
She stood. "Ok, then let's go."
He nodded. Going down to the car, he had to check his GPS to make certain he was going the right way. The little British voice over the speaker kept yelling at him when he'd make a wrong turn. Finally after thirty minutes he pulled up to the wide open fields of the local university.
Alice got out of the car and looked around. Students were everywhere laughing and talking. She had never seen so many people her age just hanging around. She pulled her coat tighter around her and watched as some of them looked up at her just for a glance then went back to what they were doing.
Sammy took Alice's hand and pulled her along to the admissions department. From there he got directions on where to go. Taking her through several hallways, the finally stopped at the class. "Psych 103," he said with a nod. Pushing open the door, he ushered Alice into the back.
The class was full and at the front of the class was Matthew, talking about the dangers of psychosis on the mind and how the mental fabrications of reality are slowly broken down in such a way that the person has no idea that anything is wrong.
"Matthew!" Alice yelled happily. When everyone turned to her she blushed. "Was I not suppose to talk?"
Matthew looked up, his lips forming a smile at Alice's outburst.
"Wow, did prof just smile?" Some of the kids laughed.
"Okay, settle down," he said, trying to get the kids back under control. "Now where was I?"
"You were talking about the effects of psychosis," a girl in the front row said.
Matthew nodded slowly. Looking up at Alice he pressed a finger to his lip to silence her before he continued.
"You can talk to him after class," Sammy said, squeezing her hand.
Alice looked over the shoulder of one of the students. His notebook was covered in notes and she couldn't make any of the formulas out. Her curls fell in her face and she pushed them aside so she could read what he wrote. Surprisingly, it reminded her a lot of what Matthew's folder on her looked like. There were words she didn't know any he had come up with this patient that had so many mental problems. She wondered what the class would do if they found out that a real asylum escapee was in the same room as them.
Matthew's lecture went on for thirty more minutes before he dismissed the class. He waited for all the students to leave, stopping only to speak with a few of the girls who wanted his advice on the upcoming test. When he was through he walked up to where Sammy and Alice were sitting. He still had the limp in his leg, but he didn't seem too bothered with it.
"I didn't think you were going to get here so early," he said.
"Yes, well, we didn't have anything else to do," Sammy said with a smile. "So, how many girl's numbers have you gotten since you started?"
"Sixteen," he said. "And four guys."
"Any of them cute?"
"Eh, I saved their numbers for you," Matthew said with a shrug. He looked at Alice and held his arms open.
Alice didn't go to him. Instead she reached over and grabbed a piece of paper the guy left behind in his desk. She had been looking at his work the whole time and just before he left he gave her a smile and left the paper there. Alice smiled. "I got a number too!" she said holding it up. "He wants to be study buddies and get coffee."
Matthew smirked as he saw the paper. "Yes, well, if I know James he wants to be more then study buddies."
She stood with the paper. "Can I have your phone?" she asked Sammy. "I want to call him."
"Whoa! Why do you want to call him?" Matthew asked quickly.
"You said I should be normal and normal girls call boys when they get their numbers," she said. She should him the note. "And he wants me to call."
"Yes, but this is different. He wants you to call him for a date."
Alice sat back down and looked at the note. "He said he wanted to be study buddies. That's not a date. And why should you care? You got sixteen numbers."
"Yes, but I threw them in the trash except for the ones which I saved for Sammy," he told her.
Alice met his eyes. "Then what have you been doing all week?" She stood again and hesitated at the trash can. Sighing she threw the number away and opened the door. "I'm going to look around. There has to be something to do here other than sitting quietly."
Matthew caught her hand. "Yes, there are. The first of which is talking about what we're going to do," he told her. "About what you want to do."
She looked at his hand. "I'm happy just being able to go outside," she said and took her hand from him.
"I'm leaving the asylum, Alice," he told her as she pulled from him.
She stiffened. Slowly she relaxed. "What does that have to do with me?"
"Well, it has a lot to do with you," he told her. "I was going to talk about all of it with you; but if you don't want to then by all means go and enjoy the sunshine."
She hesitated at the door way. It was almost like he was challenging her and for some reason, she really wanted to hit him...really hurt him. Taking a deep breath, she decided that the best thing to do was to leave. Her hands fisted and she walked out. She ran down the halls to a sign that showed her to the exit. Once outside she did exactly what he said and sat in the sun.
"Well aren't you the little charmer," Sammy smirked.
"What's wrong with her? I haven't seen her in a week and yet she treats me like the plague."
"She's going through a tough time right now."
"Yeah, well the feeling is mutual in that area," Matthew sighed. "The numbers are in my desk if you want to check them out." He grabbed his jacket and headed to find Alice, trying to rationalize why she was acting like this.
Alice laid back in the sun, her black curls spread out on the grass as she looked at the clouds. It was cold, but she didn't mind. She closed her eyes and thought of Wonderland. She had tried not to think of it much since nothing was there but sadness, but somehow she always felt like she needed to go back. She didn't want to. She knew she had to, but her heart wasn't ready to face it. She had abandoned her beautiful place in its time of need, but all the things she loved about Wonderland were...dead. She didn't have her Hatter and she didn't have Matthew. She didn't have the White Rabbit and she didn't have hope. She felt like she was slipping.
"Alice," Matthew said as he walked up to her. "Why did you run like that?"
Alice's eyes shot open. She sat up and looked up at Matthew. "Why do you have to question everything I do?"
"Because you're constantly confusing me," he replied as he sat down beside her.
"I've been doing that for three years, you should be use to it."
"As I said, you confuse me, so it's hard to get accustomed to it." Looking over at her, he soon laid down, stretching out on the grass. "Why didn't you want to stay and at least listen to what I wanted to talk about?"
Because if I would have stayed, you would be hurt. "I didn't want to talk about it. Doesn't seem so important."
"It is important. It's more bureaucratic than anything, but they're thinking of making this teaching position permanent. With Dr. Till's disappearance, and the Director's disappearance, the mental asylum is going to be closed."
Alice turned to him. "What will happen to those who work there like Sammy and those who live there...like you or the patients?"
"The patients will be moved to another asylum. Sammy's employment will be terminated," he sighed. "Either that or they'll reassign him to another asylum. As for my home in the asylum, I am uncertain what I will do. Possibly get an apartment near the college."
Alice pulled her legs to her chest. "What will Sammy do? I don't want to be a burden...and if he has no job how can I stay with him?"
"Oh, I'm certain that Sammy will be able to take care of himself. He always has. Besides, after all your overtime you put him through he has quite a bit of money saved up. He'll figure out something to do."
She sighed. This was just another thing to add to her list of how much life sucks. When was she going to get a break? She saw a group of girls standing not too far from them laughing and smiling. She wanted to be like that. They looked over at Alice and she smiled. They then looked at Matthew and started batting their eyes. Alice knew they were flirting with him. Her hands balled into fists again and her eyes grew dark. All she wanted to do was hurt them.
"If I take the teaching job here, I'd like you to take some classes," he said, not looking at her as he stared up at the sky.
Alice stood. She walked over to the girls. "Got a staring problem?" she snapped.
The girls just laughed at her. "Like we care what you think."
"You should because if you keep staring at him I'm going to cut your fucking eyes out!"
Matthew stood quickly as she yelled at the girls. He limped over to her and caught her hand. "Alice, come on," he said as he pulled her to him.
Alice glared at the girls as they kept laughing. She smiled that same mad smile. "Keep laughing...you'll miss those tongues after I cut them out."
"Alice!" Matthew snapped as he pulled her harder. "Come on to my office."
Alice snapped her head to him. "Don't yell at me!" she yelled. But doing as he said, she let him pull her along.
"I will yell at you while you're threatening my students." That was all they needed. Luckily the girl's thought she was just crazy. Well, normal crazy, not psycho crazy. "You need to calm down, Alice. Those girls aren't important."
Alice crossed her arms. "I want to go home..."
"Okay, Alice. We'll go back to Sammy's house."
"I didn't say we," she snapped. "You seem pretty content with the whores you teach!" She pulled from him and stomped off to find Sammy.
"Alice!" What the hell? She'd been out a week and was fine. She chose now to snap? Maybe this wasn't such a good idea.
Sammy was flipping through the books when Alice stormed in. "Uh...did I miss something?"
"I want to go home this instant!" she yelled and stomped her foot.
"What? Why?"
Alice threw one of the books. "Now!"
"Tell me why, Alice and we'll go this instant," Sammy said as he hurried to her side.
She started crying. "Because I hate him! And he doesn't love me!" She kicked a book. "God! And those girls were just laughing and staring at him...I want them dead!"
"Why do you hate him? What girls?" He wrapped his arm around her and hugged her.
"I want to leave!" she demanded. "That jerk...I bet he's sleeping with some of them...those whores..."
"He's only been here a few days, Alice. I doubt he's sleeping with anyone."
"You don't know that! You didn't see the way they looked at him!" She pushed him away and started grabbing books, ripping pages out of them.
"Alice! Stop!" Matthew yelled as he opened the door to his class. He hurried and stopped Alice from doing anything more.
Alice pushed at his chest and watched him hit the ground. She threw the book and it crashed into a lamp. "I hope you are happy!" She glared at Sammy. "If you won't take me home, I will find my own way!"
She walked out, slamming the door.
Alice walked over and grabbed the wig. She had become a pro at fixing it to her head. While she put it on in the mirror she looked at Sammy. "Where are we going? Am I dressed ok for it?"
