Matthew kissed the nape of her neck. "I've been practicing for you."
"Oh who?"
"A pillow. No one for you to kill," he assured her.
Alice laughed. "Too tired to kill..."
As the months progressed, Alice began to show more and more. With her tiny frame, she looked a lot larger than she should for being as far a long as she was. She was nearly seven months pregnant, and between the hormones and general aches and pains, Matthew was always on his toes around her. Her episodes and mood swings had caused him to lose himself twice.
One such event resulted in the death of a cadaver. It also result in Sammy locked up the knives. It seemed as if the bigger Alice got the more unstable Matthew became.
Laying on the couch watching a moving, Alice was snuggled into his arms, his hand slowly stroking her large belly. He didn't know why, but even now when he did that he felt his heart beat begin to pick up. It was involuntary, but he couldn't keep his hands off her stomach. She didn't seem to mind, however, in fact it seemed to comfort her to some degree so he allowed himself that one weakness.
In those months, Alice had the worst pregnancy. When she wasn't going to the bathroom to pee, she was going to puke. The morning sickness never did leave her. Back aches became more painful and her feet had become an annoyance because she could no longer see them. She never got to leave the house so she got stir crazy when Matthew was gone. Sammy bought her tones of cute pregnancy clothes, however, she didn't wear them too often. Mostly because they had lacy and ribbon or buttons which she had trouble with since she couldn't reach parts of her body anymore. As soon as the baby started moving in her, Sammy's hands were glued to her stomach during the day.
With the mood swings, Alice was the furthest from predictable. She cried at the drop of a dime and laughed at things that weren't that funny. During the day she was her worst. Without Matthew home she would complain about everything, from the color of the walls in the house to way Matthew came in the door to greet her. She snapped a lot which set Matthew off then would cry her eyes out until he was himself again. Her faint spells only got worst and sometimes when she stood too fast she would fall back passing out in the process. It caused Sammy to carry around a pillow when Matthew wasn't around in case she passed out and headed for the floor.
There were only a handful of times she really snapped and tried to hurt someone. Mostly it was Matthew because he was doing something like talking about students at school which Alice would connect to girls then connect to girls that liked him then to him fooling around with said girls. Of course, it was all something she made up in her head but it didn't stop her from lashing out. Only once did she snap at Brian. Poor guy took the last snack cake and she nearly slit his throat. It took Sammy and Matthew to pull her off him. Brian learned to never take that last of anything without offering it to Alice first.
Alice turned in Matthew's arms and moved his hands to her ribs. "It's pushing my ribs," she pouted.
He chuckled softly, kissing her forehead. "I'm sorry," he whispered.
She groaned. "It's your turn to carry it now...I'm done."
"Right. I'll get right on that," he teased, sincerely hoping that she was just joking.
She moved from him and looked off into space. "I think I have to puke..." She waited a moment. "Yep...I do. Help me up!"
He sighed. Helping her up was far easier said than done with her new found girth. He helped her into a sitting position, reaching over to the side of the couch for the waste basket so that she could just throw up in it.
Alice pulled back her hair and threw up in the trash can. Groaning, she did it once more before sitting back. Matthew handed her a napkin and she wiped her mouth then put in a few mints. "Now I have to pee."
"Yes dear." He held out his hands and groaned as he pulled her to her feet. He walked her to the bathroom and leaned against the door. Two more months of this. He couldn't wait till the little bastard was out of her and gone. It had been forever since he had been able to touch her. At this point even Sammy was starting to look good to him.
He shuddered and rubbed his temples. He needed sleep.
Alice finished after a few minutes, but didn't come out right away. She lifted her shirt and rubbed her belly lovingly. Matthew hadn't said anything about keeping the baby, but the longer she had it in her, the more she wanted it. Sammy had caught her going through the baby things in his closet and she made him promise not to say anything to Matthew. She knew he was annoyed about the baby...ever since she started denying him sex in her sixth month because it tired her out too much. Both Brian and Sammy knew she wanted to keep it and she talked to them about it, but of course, it wasn't the same as talking to Matthew about it.
Alice put her shirt down and walked out of the bathroom. "All done."
Matthew just nodded as she exited. "Would you like to finish the movie or go upstairs and lie down?" The movie was getting to the good part, so of course she would probably want to lie down. He still had to grade papers sometime tonight. He'd probably end up putting her to bed and fixing himself a pot of coffee so he could stay up and work.
Alice shrugged. "I had two naps today so we can finish the movie if you want. But I saw you had those papers when you came home...you can do those and I can find Sammy to keep me company."
He shook his head slowly. "If you want to stay up I'd rather spend it relaxing with you then grading papers."
"That doesn't get the work done though. I would like to actually go to sleep with you tonight," she said slowly. She never got to go him to bed with him anymore.
After a moments deliberation he nodded. "Okay," he sighed. "Go find Sammy." He could work and watch the movie at the same time. Going to his briefcase, he took out the answer sheet and grabbed the tests he was to grade. All eighty-six of them.
She wanted to, but she didn't sigh. Walking from him she slowly took the stairs. She hated stairs. She hated them as much as she hated Sammy's chicken and man did she hate chicken. Finally, at the top of the stairs she took a deep breath and made her way to Sammy's room. "Sammy, can I come in? I really want to sit down."
Sammy opened up the door and ushered her in. His hands instantly went to her belly to rub it. "You're so big! Oh, I can't wait till you have it!"
She laughed. "You and me and the rest of the world." She moved to the bed and sat down. "Shut the door, I want to look at the bassinet you got."
Sammy sighed even as he complied with her request. "You don't have to hide the fact that you're excited about this."
"Yes I do. You don't see the look on Matthew's face when you bring this stuff home. Yesterday, I saw him on his laptop looking at adoption couples...." she said as she stood and moved to the bassinet. "You spend too much..."
Sammy shook his head, smiling as she doted over it. "No, I don't. Someone has to spoil this kid rotten once you push it out."
"I feel bad about you buying all this stuff. It's Matthew's baby and he hasn't bought one thing," she said. She picked up one of the little outfits. "All he seems to think about is sex." She sat back on the bed.
"Yes, well, he's a man," Sammy sighed. "Not much more on his mind other than that." Sitting down beside her, he stroked her stomach. "Has he even touched your stomach since the baby started moving?"
She nodded. "Yeah, but I don't know if he does it because he knows I like it or because he wants to."
"Well, hopefully it's because he wants to. I mean, he is the one who is going to be delivering the thing. He had better want it."
"He doesn't want it. We all know that. He wants it out and then gone." She folded the little outfit and put it down. She lifted her shirt and looked at her stomach. "I want it to come out, but I know that I might have to give it up if I do so I really don't want it out at all."
Sammy stroked her bare stomach, a smile on his lips as he felt the little thing move inside her. "So you've made up your mind? You do want to keep it?"
She bit her lip. "Yes, I want it...but it won't change the fact that I might have to give it away if Matthew doesn't want it."
"It does matter. This is still my house, Alice. If you want to keep your baby then you can."
She moved his hand to her ribs where the baby seemed to kick the most. "I don't want Matthew to later resent me for making him a father when he doesn't want to be one."
"He might already resent you," he told her. "Do you really want this child that you've carried for so long to go to a complete stranger?"
She was stuck on what he said first. Bursting into wails and tears she threw the outfit across the room and kicked the bassinet. "It's not like I planned for this!"
"It's okay, Alice!" He said quickly. "I'm certain that Matthew doesn't blame you for this." He motioned to her belly. There wasn't much conviction in his words however."
She put her shirt down. "Screw you and him!" she screamed. She walked out of the room and slammed the door. Going to the top of the stairs, she grabbed a plant and threw it at Matthew in the living room. "I hope you rout in hell!" she screamed at him while she cried. Once more, she stomped off to her room, slamming the door.
Matthew ducked just as potted plant said past his head. If he hadn't moved that might have killed him. Looking up at where Alice had been, he shook his head and went back to grading papers. "Hormones," he muttered. He would be sincerely glad when she went back to the crazy he could deal with. This was just impossible.
Alice laid on her bed crying and screaming until finally her body could no longer take it and she passed out. Her pillow was soaked in tears but she didn't seem to care as she slept.
It was nearly bedtime by the time he finished grading all the papers. After putting them back in his briefcase he cleaned up the mess Alice had made hours earlier. He then quietly made his way upstairs to Alice's room. He wasn't certain what kind of mood she was going to be in, so he had to tread carefully. "Alice?"
Alice rolled from her back to her side and groaned in her sleep. Her hand moved over her belly, lightly petting.
Matthew's face hardened as he watched this. The tiny terror was already causing troubles for her. Shaking his head, he watched as his hands shook. If only the little brat had never been created. He should have made her get the abortion. Reaching out, he rubbed her belly soothingly so that she could sleep. Two months. That was all that was left.
Alice slowly opened her eyes at Matthew's touch. She looked up at him and rolled on her other side away from him.
"What have I done now?" he sighed.
"Nothing. Go to sleep," she said and yawned.
He didn't bother to argue or press the situation further. With her mood swings she'd be fine before he finished getting undressed. Once he was down to nothing but his boxers, he crawled into bed beside her. "Tomorrow, do you want to go out to eat?" Tomorrow was a special day, not that he'd expect her to remember.
"Why?" she asked. He never let her leave the house since she got pregnant.
"Because, tomorrow's my birthday and the university gave me tickets to that Riveria restaurant."
"Ok," she said. "If you want."
He rolled his eyes as he wrapped an arm around her. "If you don't want to go that's fine," he muttered. It seemed like only yesterday that she would have been excited about his birthday. Now if it didn't involve the ba- the thing in her stomach, she didn't get excited at all.
"It's your birthday, we should go," she said and started rubbing her belly again. Two months. All she had left was two months.
"Are you even going to be up to it?" His hand moved over hers. His fingers intertwined with hers, stopping her from rubbing her stomach.
She yawned. "Yeah, of course." She moved her hand from his and started to rub her belly.
He moved his arm from around her and rolled over so that his back was to her. "Good night," he said with a yawn, reaching up and turning off the light.
Alice felt like crying all over again. After a few hours, she rolled over and looked at Matthew. He was sleeping peacefully. Slowly, she got out of bed and walked out of the room. She walked across the hall to Sammy's bedroom and crawled in his bed, snuggling against him.
Sammy woke up as he felt something large press against his back. "Alice?" he yawned, wondering what time it was.
"I didn't mean to wake you. Go back to sleep," she said and closed her eyes.
"Everything okay?" Sammy turned and wrapped his arms around her to comfort her. Obviously she and Matthew had gotten into an argument or something must have happened to make her crawl into his bed at this hour.
She moved her arms around him. Why didn't she fall in love with him and have his child? Things would have been so much easier then. "I'm ok. I just wanted to be with someone who wants this baby as much as I do."
Sammy smirked and nodded. "Okay, sweetie. You can sleep with me as long as you want."
She wrapped her arms around him tighter and moved her head to his chest. Yawning she closed her eyes again. Though she knew it was Sammy holding her, she pictured Matthew.
In the morning, Matthew got up and looked at the empty spot on the bed. Grabbing a shower, he got dressed. He thought about writing a note for her, but instead walked to Sammy's room. "Alice, I'm going to work. I'll be back later. Call me if you need me," he said, kissing her cheek.
She didn't bother looking at him as she nodded on Sammy's chest.
Matthew's eyes narrowed when she wouldn't even look at him. "I doubt we'll be able to go to dinner, but I'll call if my schedule becomes free."
"Happy birthday, Matthew," she said.
"Thanks..."
Matthew left for work, his hands shaking while he threw his head back into the seat. He was angry. Angry at her. Angry at the stupid brat. Angry at everything. He never asked for a child. He never wanted one. Now, because of one stupid mistake, because he still doesn't want a kid all of a sudden he's the bad guy.
After he left, Alice got out of the bed and walked back to her room. Going to her closet, she pulled out a box that was wrapped with a bow on it. She had bought it weeks ago for Matthew's birthday from one of the catalogs Sammy gave her. It wasn't anything special, just an engraved picture frame with the same words she had on the back of her brush. The picture was of her and Matthew sitting on the couch smiling at each other with Matthew rubbing her stomach. It was the first time the baby kicked and Sammy took the picture as Alice moved Matthew's hands to feel. At the time, Alice thought he wanted to keep it and she had the picture made for his desk at school. Now it just seemed like a stupid gift.
The entire day he was at class he was in a sour mood. His students bore the brunt of his frustration and anger as he decided to give them a pop quiz. Considering most of their school work depended on getting a good grade in his class, everyone was dreading the pop quiz. Sadly, no one passed. His questions were given verbally, fast and complicated. They couldn't do anything but scrawling helplessly on paper.
At the end of the day, Matthew got out of class and got in his car. Closing his eyes, he sighed. His students hated him now. He hated himself now. Today was a wonderful birthday. He sat in his car for what seemed like forever, finally checking the time. It was almost dinner time.
With a sigh, he turned on his car and started for home. He took his time, wanting to prolong the inevitable.
Alice threw the present back in the closet and left it there all day. She had worried about what she would give him now but she couldn't come up with anything off the top of her head. The only thing she decided on was birthday sex.
Matthew opened up the door, trying to make as little noise as possible. As soon as he stepped inside he saw a birthday card from Sammy. Opening the card revealed naughty pictures of Sammy, which made Matthew groan. He and Brian had gone to dinner and would be back later with his birthday surprise.
Setting his stuff down, he simply collapsed on the couch, too tired to do much else.
Alice came out of the bathroom and looked at him on the couch. She shifted and pulled at her clothes. "You look tired..."
"Oh who?"
"A pillow. No one for you to kill," he assured her.
Alice laughed. "Too tired to kill..."
