Matthew winced as the door was shut rather harshly. "Well, I blew that," he whispered. Going downstairs he grabbed his briefcase and started to work. He highly doubted that he would be able to get too much work done today.

Sammy rolled over as the door slammed. "I take it that things didn't go well," he yawned.

"Oh shut it!" Alice snapped. She threw the things down and sat on the end of the bed, pushing at her ribs as she baby kicked her, feeling her tension and anger. It was as if the baby was on Matthew's side.

"Yes ma'am," Sammy whimpered, not wanting to get hit this morning.

The rest of the day, Matthew's words echoed in her head as she folded baby clothes and put them in their new places. She sat on the floor in Sammy's bedroom organizing and fixing things while she thought of Matthew. How could he say he didn't want someone else to father his child? It's not like he wanted the child or loved it. She was giving Sammy something he wanted, something she wanted, something the baby needed, and Matthew a way out. She saw it as a win win situation...and yet...her heart told her over and over again that she wished Matthew would say that he wanted to be the father, to love it, take care of it, and have no regrets.

Matthew was focused on everything that had happened that morning while he gave his lessons. He was distracted, but at least he wasn't homicidal. That was a good thing, wasn't it? During his lunch break he read the newspaper article. His hands fisting the paper before tossing it back into his briefcase.

He came home in a rather offset mindset. He didn't feel like arguing with Alice, so he just went straight to his room and shut the door. He just didn't want to fight anymore.

Sammy was at school and Alice was alone. She heard Matthew come in but didn't say anything. The baby wasn't agreeing with her and had been kicking her madly all day. She grabbed at the crib so she could stand, but it tipped and she fell back, landing on the floor as the crib came crashing over her. Instantly, she threw her arms over her stomach to guard the baby, but it was a large belly and she had very small arms.

Matthew's head shot up as he heard something fall. Getting up, he walked down to Sammy's room. "Alice? Is everything okay? Do you need any help?"

Alice tried to push the crib off her. Sharp pains shot through her body and her head hurt. He hand went to her forehead and felt blood. No, she wasn't ok. She had put the life of her baby in danger and probably did hurt it. She had no prenatal care so there was no telling what could happen or what damage she had done.

Matthew didn't hear an answer. "Alice, I'm coming in," he said. Pushing open the door, his eyes widened as he saw the crib. "Alice!" Rushing over to her, he pulled the crib off of her and set it up. He quickly knelt beside her, and helped to ease her against him. "What happened? How do you feel?"

"I went to stand...and grabbed the crib." She placed her hands on her stomach. The baby wasn't kicking anymore. She started to cry. "Oh God...what have I done?"

"Shh," he whispered, holding her in his arms while stroking her comfortingly. "I'm sure the baby is fine. It's okay."

She cried hard against him. Why did she grab the crib anyways? Why didn't she just ask for help? Would it have killed her to ask for help? Something wet poured below her and she looked down. "Oh no...my water just broke..." It was early by a full month.

Matthew looked down, shaking his head. "No, no, no...that's not good," he said as he looked down between her legs. "It's a full month early. If it's coming now...." He shook his head. "I've got to you to the bed."

Alice pointed the the small mattress in the corner. "Sammy bought it just for this. It's made special for home births," she said and started taking deep breaths. God her head hurt. "You have to call Sammy and Brian."

"That can wait," he said. "Can you stand?"

Her hands went to his shoulder as she slowly stood. She couldn't feel the baby and it was scaring her. Her tears were thick and she started pulling her shorts off with shaking hands.

"Here, let me help you," he said. Sliding her shorts down, he pulled down her panties. Looking up at her, his face was grim. He helped to move her to the bed, after which he rubbed her belly soothingly. "Okay, moved your legs up," he instructed, pushing her legs apart and up so he could have a clear view.

She did as she was told. "I need Sammy here..." she said. He had been beside her going through breathing exercises and promising he would hold her hand through it all. She was scared, no terrified.

"He might not be able to get here in time," he said. "How do you feel? Any pain or contractions?" He reached out to check her. "You don't seem dilated yet."

"My head hurts, but that's about it," she said. "I can't feel it moving anymore..."

That wasn't good at all, but he didn't want to scare her. "Okay, well stay like this, I'll take care of your head." He moved and grabbed bandages, gently dabbing at her forehead as he dressed it.

"You have to call Sammy...I can't do this alone...." she said softly.

"You're not alone. I'm here."

"You're my doctor not the father," she pointed out. Her hand went to her stomach. "Ouch..."

"Can we please just stop that for a few minutes?" He snapped. His eyes softened when she pressed her stomach. "Everything okay? What happened?"

"I think I'm having contractions," she said. She laid back. "I can't do this..."

"You can. You don't have much of a choice, Alice. I'll be with you every step of the way."

She looked at him. Her face moved into his chest. "Matthew...I'm really scared."

"I know," he whispered. "But it's okay. I'm here with you, Alice. Our baby is going to be okay. I promise."

"Our baby?" Again he was saying that. And why hadn't he called Sammy???

"Yes, our baby," he said again. Moving back between her legs, he slipped his fingers inside her, spreading her lips. "How does everything feel?"

Her eyes locked on his. "Like I'm about to have a baby," she said and shifted as another contraction hit her. She gritted her teeth through the pain. "Please...tell me why you keep saying 'our baby.'"

"Because it is our baby," he said. He reached out and took her hand. "Squeeze it when you feel pain."

She squeezed his hand. Wasn't this suppose to be slow? Didn't she read that in a book somewhere? "Matthew...you know what I mean. For once, don't just say stuff here and there," she said and started to pant. "I don't want to play connect the dots."

"I want to be there for our child," he whispered. His fingers slid into her, seeing if he could see anything yet.

"You can't just say that," she panted. "Ouch!" She squeezed his hand tighter. "Please call Sammy!"

"Okay. Okay." He left her for only a second to get the phone. He dialed Sammy’s number, after a few seconds he set it down. "It's busy," he said, wincing slightly as she squeezed his hand.

"Damn it!" she yelled. Of all the times to have phone sex with Brian! "Tell me why you want to be there for the kid you don't want."

"I...do want it," he whispered.

"Come on, Matthew. Open up to me!" She gripped tighter on his hand. "Ouch ouch ouch!"

"Breath," he instructed. "And I'm not the one who needs to open up right now. You are." He motioned to her slowly dilating vagina. "The contractions are coming closer."

"No, I need to know how you feel. I need to know now," she said. "I feel like I should push..."

He shook his head. "You're not wide enough yet," he told her. His eyes met hers. There was a debate within him as he looked back down between her legs. "I do...want our child."

"Wanting it and loving it are two different things."

"I know," he admitted. "It's just...." He shook his head. "I want to love it."

"That's not enough, Matthew. It's going to need love as soon as it's here," she panted. "Oh God! Ouch!"

"Easy, Alice. Just squeeze my hand and keep breathing. You're doing great." He spread her lips, watching as cervix continued to dilate with each contraction. "And if I do love it?"

"You have to talk to Sammy," she screamed. "This isn't fun!"

"I told you it was going to be painful." He looked around and then down at her. "I have some pain killers in my bag. Will you be okay for a few minutes while I go get it?"

"No! Don't leave!" she panted. "And I don't want my baby drugged up coming out."

"Our baby," he corrected. "And it won't be drugged up. You will. It's only going to get more painful, Alice."

She nodded. "I can take it. I've done worst to myself." Another contraction hit and she started screaming. "Try calling him again!"

Matthew reached for the phone and dialed again. "Still busy."

She screamed in anger. "That jerk! He promised to be here if I needed him!" She started shaking her head. "I have to push, Matthew! I have to!"

Matthew looked down. He still didn't think she was dilated enough. "Okay, Alice. Take deep breaths," he instructed.

She nodded and started pushing. Her heart raced and she pushed harder. After ten seconds, she stopped to breathe.

Matthew's breath caught in his throat as he saw something.
"Alice," he whispered. "It's feet are coming out first.”

Alice paled. "You have to turn it around!" she screamed.

He nodded. He never thought he would do this but he reached his full hand into her. Taking hold of the tiny feet, he pushed it back into her, his hand guiding the child until he felt its head move into place.
"Okay! Push again."

Alice took a large breath and pushed. She made no sound as she pushed hard. After ten seconds, she stopped to breathe then started again.

"Come on, you can do it," he urged. "I see the head!"

"It hurts!" Alice screamed, but she kept pushing.

"I know. I know, but you're doing great! Just fight through the pain. Keep pushing." The head was crowning. He cradled it while she pushed.

"Ah!" she screamed, feeling the baby pass through. She threw her head back and started pushing harder and harder.

Matthew turned the baby as its shoulders began to move pass it vaginal walls.
"Doing great, Alice. Keep it up!" Slowly but surely it was getting it out.

She was tired and at the moment all she wanted to know was if the baby was ok. But she pushed. She pushed and pushed until she was red in the face.

Finally the baby slid out into Matthew's arms. The umbilical cord was in the way, but he didn't have anything to cut it with. Looking down at the baby, his eyes met Alice's.
"It's not breathing," he whispered. It was so small, much smaller than it should be. "Alice, I have to go get my bag."

"Run!" she screamed. "You have to save it!"

He nodded. Looking around, he reached up and grabbed the closest thing he could find which was a pair of scissors. Looking at Alice, he cut the umbilical chord. Cradling the child in his arms, he hurried down to his room with it.

Alice reached for the phone and dialed Sammy's number. She didn't know what else to do but cry.

After the fourth ring Sammy answered, sounding spent
. "Hello?"

"It's not breathing! And I fell! And Matthew is trying to save it! Why are you here? You promised!" she cried into the phone.

"What? Alice, what happened? What's going on?"

"Don't you listen!? I had the baby and it's not breathing! Why aren't you here!" she screamed.

"You had the baby? Alice, you're not due for another month!" Sammy jumped up, pulling up his pants in the process. "It's going to take me forty minutes to get across town. I'll be there just as soon as I can."

"Why didn't you answer the phone! You are so selfish!" she hung up the phone. "Matthew! Please, is it breathing!" she called. Her hands reached out, grabbing the bed and forcing herself to stand. Blood poured from her as she started walking to the door.

"Alice, don't you dare move!" Matthew called from down the hall. "I still have to get the placenta out!"

She looked down at herself. "Too late!"

"Get back on the bed! I can't worry about you and the baby. Just lie down."

Alice hesitated but moved back to the bed. "Please...please let it live..."

The house was quiet for the next few minutes. Eventually, Matthew walked back in, the baby wrapped in a blanket. He looked down at Alice and shook his head slowly. "I did everything I could," he said slowly. "But I-" He couldn't get the rest out before she started yelling.

Alice cried hard, burring her face in her hands. This was all her fault. She couldn't even look at the blankets it was in. Her heart hurt. After all that time...feeling it inside her...it just died...just like that.

Matthew knelt beside her, a soft cry coming from the blanket.
"She's alive," he whispered.

Alice looked up. She looked over at the blanket and placed her hand over her heart.
"I thought...and you were saying..." She reached her arms out and took the baby from him. "I'm...so grateful..."

"Be gentle," he told her. "I had to open up her airway to revive her." He hesitated before easing himself into a sitting position, wrapping an arm around her he let her lean against him.

"Thank you," she said and lightly hugged the baby. "She's so beautiful, so perfect." She couldn't stop her tears. Little Alison's hair was dark black like Matthew's and when her eyes fluttered Alice could see the deep pools of blue like her own. Alice kissed her head. "Is she healthy? Is she going to be ok?”

"It's hard to say. The next few days will be crucial. I'll have to observe her and make certain that nothing happens...but right now it seems that she's doing well." He leaned forward and kissed her forehead. "We make a beautiful kid."

Alice looked up at him. "How can you look at her and not love her so very much?" she asked and looked back at the baby. "My little Alison, I'm going to give you the whole world..."

He had to admit that it was very hard. Reaching down he gently caressed her forehead, her tiny hand reached up and grabbed his thumb. Matthew's breath caught in his throat as his eyes watered. This...this girl...is his daughter.

"I wonder what Sammy will say...he got his baby girl."
