"Well how else can I help you?"
"Stay," Alice stated simply.
His small smile fell while he stroked her face. "It's because I want to stay that I have to leave. It will only be for a short while; and I'll wait until Sammy is home."
"I've spent the last few weeks with Sammy...I want to spend the first weeks of our baby's arrival with you."
Matthew bit his lip as if he was toying with the idea of what to do. Alice would undoubtedly sleep like a rock tonight, he just hoped that their newborn child would give him the same courtesy. "Then I'll stay."
Alice smiled. Grabbing his shirt, she pulled him down until he was sitting again. Quickly, she snuggled into his chest with a content sigh. She could hear Alison making small noises while she gummed the rabbit.
He found himself pausing as she snuggled into his chest. Slowly but surely he wrapped his arms around her, slowly stroking her lovingly. He had made his choice for now. Hopefully his choice to stay now would not mean that he could not stay later.
For the rest of the day, Alice stayed in bed. It drove her crazy. She ate in bed, watched TV in bed, and fed Alison in bed. By night fall, she was sick of bed. However, she didn't complain...much.
"I'm still not letting you get up," he said for the millionth time. "Please don't make me handcuff you to the bed."
She groaned. "This is worse than being trapped in the asylum!" she snapped. Ok...so at least here she could see outside and watch TV or read...
"Yes, well in the asylum you didn't have something the size of a small football pass through you," he said with a smirk. "So you're bed ridden until I say otherwise."
Alice threw her body back on the pillows. "You are acting like my doctor rather than the father of my baby!" She glanced over at Alison who was half asleep while sucking on her pacifier. She seemed to be fighting against the sleep like always. "And Alison is too small and young for enjoyment...all she does is sleep and eat."
"And that's all she is going to do for quite some time. She's a baby not a toy." He was thoroughly enjoying this.
"All the books I read said babies were fun and an enjoyment. It was such a lie," she pouted. Leaning over the bassinet she glared at Alison. "Hey...wake up..." Alison's eyes slowly opened and looked at Alice. Her face contorted and the pacifier was pushed from her lips. She started screaming and wailing like Alice had pinched her. Alice shot back. "Oh my God...she's possessed!"
"Oh for Christ's sake...." He knew this was going to happen. He just knew it would. Once the general excitement of having a kid wore off Alice would grow bored with it. Walking over to the bassinet, he picked Alison up, cradling her while walking over to Alice. "You woke her up so you get to hold her till she falls back asleep."
She didn't want to hold her, she wanted to play with her. And a screaming baby is very little fun. Groaning, she held her arms out until Alison was in her hands. She pulled her to her chest and placed her on her shoulder then started rubbing her back. "I don't see why I have to suffer more than I already have. I gave birth to her. Must she scream all the time?" It's not like she wanted an answer, she just wanted Alison to know that she was getting on her nerves.
"Welcome to the joys of parenthood," he told her with a smirk. "Just wait until she gets older. That's when she screams all the time and dates boys we don't approve of."
"At least then I can lock her in her room until her voice goes out," she groaned. Finally Alison was calm. She slipped to sleep on Alice after a few moments and Alice put her back in the bassinet. The pacifier was put back in her mouth and once more the room was silent. "So bored..." She laid back and yawned. Of course she would sleep easy. She had nothing else to do.
"Then sleep," he encouraged her with a smile. "It's good for healing. If you heal enough you might get to walk around longer."
She yawned again and nodded. "Yeah...I can't wait." She took one last look at Alison then closed her eyes for sleep.
Matthew bent over and kissed her forehead. He stayed there in the room with them until he heard their breathing become nice and even. Smiling to himself, he grabbed his coat and car keys. He would have to make this quick.
Alison started screaming a few hours later. Alice pulled a pillow over her head. "It's your turn Matthew!" she called. When Alison didn't stop screaming, she said up. "Matthew?" Reaching over, she picked up Alison and pulled her gown off her shoulders to feed her. Instantly Alison was quiet. "Matthew!" Alice yelled down the hall. She moved to the edge of the bed and stood. Holding Alison tightly to her, she started walking down the hall to see if he was down stairs.
"Alice?" Sammy and Brian were snuggled on the couch watching television. At least, they had been. The couple had fallen asleep, and Alice's screams had awoken them. Looking up at the stairs, Sammy stretched and yawned. "You shouldn't be walking, sweetie."
She started down the stairs. "Where is Matthew? It's his turn to feed Alison."
"Matthew? He's not back yet?" Sammy checked the time on the television. "He should have been back by now."
Alice was suddenly steaming. "He's not back!? Where did he go!?" She pulled Alison from her and the baby started screaming again. She handed her to Sammy and stomped to the kitchen. Pulling out one of the bottles from the freeze, she fixed her gown and started warming the milk in the bottle. "That jerk! He said he wouldn't leave! He knew I needed help and he didn't even care!" she yelled as she slammed things around while Alison screamed. She put her hands over her ears. "It's coming damn it! It takes a minute to warm up!" Alison was always screaming! It was driving her nuts!
Sammy cradled Alison, getting up he hurried into the kitchen with her. "He said he was going to school. He had to get some reports or something."
Brian's cell phone went off. After a brief conversation he groaned as he started getting up. "I've got to go babe. Duty calls."
"But you're not even suppose to work tonight," Sammy whined.
"I know, but there's a bad fire there at the asylum. They need everyone they can get."
Alice's head shot up. "What?" she said. Why would it be on fire if no one was there? They shut it down.... "Matthew..." she whispered. "I'm going with you!" she said and rushed over to her coat.
"Alice, you can't! You're not even suppose to be walking now!"
"I can't take a civilian with me in the truck," Brian told her. "You need to just stay here and let the fire department take care of it."
"Either you are taking me or I will scream until someone does take me!" she yelled. "I swear to you I will steal your car Sammy!" No, she didn't know how to drive. And no, she didn't know how to get to the asylum, but she knew to follow the smoke.
Her screaming caused Alison to scream louder, which in turn gave Brian a headache. "Like mother like daughter," he groaned. "Sammy, you just take her, but make certain she's out of harm’s way. I can't take her on the truck with me."
"Fine, just take care of Alison first," Sammy said. "She's starving, and I'm not about to leave with a starving baby!"
Alice took Alison from him and pulled her gown down again. "I'll feed her and you drive," she said and started out the door.
Sammy rolled his eyes as he grabbed his car keys. Matthew was going to kill him. He just knew it. Going out to the car, he opened Alice's door before sliding into the driver's seat. Turning up the a/c, he pulled out and started toward the asylum.
Turning on the radio, he listened to the status reports on the fire. Apparently the whole place was ablaze.
Alice sat in quiet until they pulled up to the asylum. She didn't move for a long time. Alison was asleep in her arms and she pulled up her gown. Her eyes scanned over the firemen and her heart stopped when she saw Matthew's car but no Matthew. She thrusted Alison to Sammy and dashed out of the car. She ran pass firemen while they ran after her telling her to stop. Her eyes washed over the fire, hearing her parents’ screams. Tears poured from her eyes. "Matthew!" she screamed.
The firemen were right on her and she needed to make a choice. Stand out here and let him die or die trying to save him. She glanced back at Sammy as he called to her while holding Alison. "Please...love her for me..." she whispered and ran inside.
Instantly flames surrounded her. She coughed but it didn't clear the smoke. The bottom of her night gown caught on fire and she had to put it out. "Matthew!" she screamed. Still, she heard nothing. She moved fast down the halls trying to avoid the fire.
A door flew open, it was a storage room. Bodies fumbled out of it and Alice screamed. She covered her mouth at the smell of routing, burning bodies. Most of them were decayed and old. Alice knew they were Matthew's work. She jumped over them and started down another hall. "Matthew, can you hear me!" she coughed. Another door broke open and bodies poured out. She cried out, completely heart broken and disgusted.
She leaned against the wall, her heart heavy and her chest screaming. She looked down and saw the small dripping of blood between her legs and she knew she was in trouble. She coughed hard and called for Matthew again. Slowly, she slid to the floor. It was too much, she was tired...and the smoke was heavy. Darkness set in and Alice passed out.
"Matthew!" Alice yelled when she shot up from the ground. She looked around and instantly knew she was in Wonderland. Slowly, she stood and could see the fields were burning. What a horrible time to be in Wonderland...and she had no way back. "Mr. Cat!" she called.
"You call at a very precarious moment, Alice. Unless you wish to engage in sins of the flesh, I'm afraid that I'm much too busy to play right now." His eyes and mouth appeared but nothing else. He started at Alice, surprised that she had even bothered to come back at all.
"Forgive me Mr. Cat...I had first and obligation...to my child..." she said softly. She looked at Wonderland and though her heart wished to return to Matthew, she knew she was here for a reason. It was time to finish what she started. It was time to kill the Red Queen. Reaching to her side she found her knife. "But I am here now. And I am ready. I will kill her," she promised and started off to the castle in the distance.
"You will do so alone, I'm afraid," the Cat said. His collar appeared around his neck as he was pulled from her. Yes, if Alice wished to do this she would do it without their aid.
Alice looked at him. Her hand slightly moved up but she pulled away. "Poor Mr. Cat...she has you on a leash." Her eyes grew hard. "She will pay!" She looked over what she could of him then started running to the castle.
The Cat smirked as she ran off. "Be safe...Alice," he whispered.
The path to the castle was surprisingly clear. It was as if Wonderland knew she was on her way to save it. When she got to the door, it opened without hesitation. However, Alice did hesitate. Slowly she walked in. Heat hit her in waves and she took off her white coat, leaving her in the skirt and undershirt. Her shoes hit the floor making an echo.
In the distance, there was a laugh. Around her, a million candles lite. The Red Queen sat at the thrown with a leash in her hand. Another leash was tied to the chair. Alice's eyes fell on the young man with the collar around his neck standing to her side. She tugged on the leash and he moved forward, wincing.
"Don't pout," the Red Queen snapped. "It's unbecoming!"
He nodded. Alice looked him over closer. If she were a twin, he would be the perfect brother for her. His hair looked the same shade and his eyes were the same shade. The Red Queen looked at Alice with a smirk. "Lovely isn't he? Made him myself after I killed the king." Alice looked at her. She was so very beautiful and it confused Alice. She didn't understand how something so gorgeous could be so evil. "You are very late, Alice. And I don't like lateness. But then I heard the most wonderful news," she laughed lightly. Her voice was so beautiful. "You killed the Hatter!"
Alice's eyes hardened. "That's not what happened!" she screamed.
"Oh, but isn't it? You wished him dead and dead he became." She stood, her lovely dress drug the ground and she pulled the leash with her. The young man followed. Grabbing the other leash, she pulled harshly until the cat fell before her. She kicked him hard. "This cat was trying to hide his body! How stupid!" She kicked him again and Alice began to cry silently at his pain. "Oh, Alice. Don't cry. You see...he knows his place. It's at my feet. And he is so very stupid for trying to hide something that belongs to me. The Hatter was always mine."
"He was never yours!" Alice yelled. She pointed the knife at her. "I didn't come here to play games."
The Queen smiled. She gave the Cat's leash to the young man and both of them were pushed back as she started walking to Alice. She opened her hand and a ball of fire formed. "Alice, dear, naive, stupid Alice. This is my world. And in my world...games are so much better than real life!" As Alice stared at the fire, the Queen back handed her. She cried out. "Do not ignore me!"
Alice fell to the ground spitting blood. Slowly she stood. "You will regret that."
The Cat watched from the shadows, his sides ached, but that was nothing new. His claws flexed slowly, and he couldn't help but to wonder who was going to win. Alice had conquered the twins and the Caterpillar, but she was only able to do that with the Hatter's help. Without him...how would Alice fair?
The Queen watched as Alice dusted herself off. "Am I suppose to be threatened? Maybe scared?" The Queen's eyes grew hard and scary. "I've faced so much worse than you. I ran away from an insane asylum. Got pregnant. Gave birth to a very small and premature girl. And now my Matthew is burning alive. I don't have time for this!" she screamed.
The Queen snorted. "Time? Who cares about time, Alice? Why do you even care? You abandoned this world many time and now you want to fix it? Ha!"
"I didn't mean for things to happen the way they did. And yes, I know it's my fault...but...I'm here to fix it now," she said softly.
"Like hell!" The Queen screamed. Fire appeared around her, dancing at her whim and forming shapes. "I worked too hard for this!"
Thrusting her hand at Alice, the fire engulfed her. Alice screamed. She threw herself on the ground and started rolling.
"You can't fight death, Alice! This world belongs to me and I'm not willing to let you put out my fire!"
Alice closed her eyes and suddenly, it began to snow. The Queen stepped back as the snow covered Alice. "What...what is this?" she stumbled.
Alice began to stand as the fire around her died and the snow twisted around her. "This world...it's not yours," she said slowly. "You have let power consume you."
"Shut up! You don't know anything!" The Queen screamed.
Alice sighed. Holding the knife tightly in her hand, the snow pushed forward, covering the Queen and killing her fire. "Stop it! Stop it!" she screamed. "You're ruining me!"
Alice's eyes hardened. Behind her, the White Queen appearing. She was the one controlling the snow. "It's time, Alice," she whispered. "End this now."
"No!" the Red Queen screamed. Her eyes turned blood red. The snow began to melt and her fire grew larger until it was stifling. "I will not give up so easily!"
Fire flew behind Alice and rushed to the White Queen. Alice was pushed out of the way by snow. The White Queen held up her hand and the snow stopped the fire from advancing on her. "It's time for you to let Wonderland go, sister!"
"It's mine!" The Red Queen yelled. "I've earned it!"
"This world...is Alice's...you know this."
It only fueled the fire. It pushed hard against the snow. Melted snow poured over the ground, creating waves of water. There was so much water that Alice had to stand or she would drown.
She pushed against the water to the Cat and sliced the leash on him. With the Red Queen's attention to the White Queen, it was the perfect moment to strike. Alice lunged at her, driving the knife in her back. She screamed and threw her body back. Alice landed on the ground while the Red Queen screamed over and over. Next to Alice, the young man, moved to her. Slowly he turned into a much younger, small version of Alice. Alice's eyes grew wide as he suddenly started melting into her, like a lost part of her. She took a deep breath and suddenly she felt whole again. The Red Queen turned to ash.
