Chapter i: True identity
Twelve years ago a special child had been born to a couple who had thought themselves infertile. They had prayed fervently to be blessed with a daughter, and God had granted their wish. The couple had named their baby Alexius and they thanked God daily for their gift. As a young girl Alexius attracted many people because she had a certain spirit about her. Her parents would take her to the park so she could feed the ducks, the zoo so she could see the different animals and the museum so she could learn about many different things. Alexius loved school and had many friends who played with her on a daily basis. Overall, the small family led a happy and fulfilling life.
The night before her twelfth birthday, Alexius’ parents went to the grocery store to prepare for their daughter’s party. The eleven-year-old sat on the couch and channel-surfed. A news flash interrupted the show she had been watching and she scowled before realizing what it was about. The news reporter was in front of the grocery store where a drive-by shooting had taken place. Alexius sat on the edge of her seat, gripping the cushions tightly in her hands.
Four were injured in the shooting and two were killed, the reporter said. The victims have been identified as Mr. and Mrs. Kinlan. Alexius turned off the television when the victims’ faces were shown; her parents were dead. She drew her knees up to her chest and cried. When she felt an extra weight on her back she looked over her shoulder and almost screamed. She had a pair of gray and white wings with black-tipped feathers. She bolted to the bathroom to look at herself in the mirror, and stared with her mouth gaping. I’m an angel?!
