Chapter Five
. . .
I stayed prone on the ground until it was dark. When I went through the event again and again in my head, I made a decision. I sat up, and vertigo hit me like a brick and I fell backwards again. I cursed quietly and stood up slowly. Shaking my head, I looked back at the house, there was a faint light coming from the inside, Senea was still awake, I realized. That wasn't going to make it any easier.
Shit.
I walked over to the door, expecting it to be locked form the inside; it wasn't. Taking a slow breath, I opened the door and stepped inside. Senea lay across the room on her bed, unmoving. A candle was lit next to her bed frame. She didn't move as I walked across the one-room house and quickly put my small amount of belongings together. I finished and looked at Senea's back. Her long dark hair was spread across her bed, resembling a spider web. I had to do it, I thought to myself.
I sat in the chair beside her bed and exhaled quietly. I tried to speak but words failed me. Cycling by air for a few minutes, I calmed down enough to start talking. “I…I'm going.” I whispered and shivered involuntarily. Senea started and turned her head around to look at me.
“W-what?” She asked in disbelief. I looked away from her quickly. “Why?” She asked, sitting up quickly.
“I can't stay here anymore. I can't begin to tell you how sorry I am about… what happened.” I swallowed and looked at the girl next to him. Tears started to fall again. I looked away and stood up. “Sayonara.” I whispered and walked away. Before I could get away from her something stopped me. I looked back and Senea had grabbed my hand with hers.
“Why do you have to go?” She cried, pleading into my eyes. I stared back and my vision wavered. I looked beside her.
“Why…” I looked back at her. “Why didn't you stop me?” She froze her trembling. Her dark eyes bore into mine, though I couldn't tell what she was thinking. Why didn't she stop me? She had the power to. So why did she just let me take advantage of her?
Senea didn't say anything for numerous minutes. She had stopped crying. She stared distantly into my eyes and seemed to be lost and couldn't find her way to the answer. I needed it, though. I put my hand under her chin and looked into Senea's eyes.
“Why didn't you stop me?” I asked again, more forcefully. She looked away and whimpered. This wasn't the Senea that trained me. This was a little girl, afraid. What was wrong with her? Had I scared her that badly? This was the same girl who, a few years earlier, threatened to kill me if I tried to bite her. I exhaled and stood up, away from Senea.
“Please…” She whispered quietly. “Don't leave…” I looked back at her. She seemed helpless and sad. The complete opposite of how she always was. Something came crashing down in me and I fell to the ground sobbing loudly. Through my sobbing I heard Senea gasp and rushed to my side. She tried to say something but I couldn't make out the words.
I don't know what came over me but I couldn't stop crying and repeating over and over, “I'm sorry.” I vaguely felt Senea's hands try and pull me up. She pulled my head up to look at her. I shook my head and continued crying. I couldn't stop. Suddenly I found myself pushed back against the wall with Senea pressing her lips to mine roughly. A few moments of silence passed then she pulled away from me slowly. I was speechless. What could I say at this point? I stared at the girl in front of me. She stared at me silently, waiting for a response.
Why did she kiss me? Why didn't she stop me? It was all too confusing. I opened my mouth to speak, but words failed me again. Senea looked away, choked back a silent sob, and ran back to her bed, falling into it. I still couldn't move or speak. What should I do? I knew I had to do something. Shaking my head I shakily stood up and walked carefully over to Senea. I sat down on the edge of her bed and looked at her crying body. There had been so much crying tonight. I had to end it.
Slowly, I reached for Senea's shoulder. I held her shoulder and pulled her so she rolled over to face me. She looked up at me in an unreadable gaze. I knew what I had to do. I lowered my head to hers and pressed my mouth to hers softly. Senea closed her eyes and relaxed her body. I felt her hands wrap around my neck. I pulled my head away far enough to whisper, “I'm sorry.” Senea smiled softly and shook her head.
“Don't be.”
. . .
The fire was almost out, a small flicker of flame was lingering. Kyle scratched his back under his coat and threw a few more logs onto the fire, giving it a boost with a flick of the wrist.
“Again,” He said. “I'll skip the good part.” He shot a glance at Aang, who looked a little uncomfortable. “Now we get to the part that's important.”
. . .
I woke up shortly after dawn. I could feel the sunlight spill into the room. It didn't hit me, but I could still feel it emanating inside the room. I growled and shifted my weight a little. What kind of vampire was I that slept during the night?
“Quiet.” Moaned a voice beside me. I then noticed a comfortable weight on me. It was warm, and across my chest. My eyes snapped open and I saw Senea lying across my chest, both of us covered by her blanket. The events of the previous night flash back into my mind. Oh yea. I smiled in spite of myself and relaxed again. I lay still, enjoying the welcome warmth for as long as I could. I sighed when Senea stirred and lifted her head, looking at me.
“Morning.” She said sleepily, smiling at me. I smiled back at her. Senea leaned forward and kissed me softly, then got up and walked to the other side of the room. She got to the sink and splashed her face with water, waking her up fully. “Ooo, cold” She shivered and bent over to pick up her clothes that had found their way to the floor the night before.
“I think I'll sit training out today.” She began, glancing at me. I raised an eyebrow at her. “You took a lot of blood last night, I'll be weak for at least the rest of today.” She finished, pointing toward her neck. There were fresh teeth marks near her collarbone. I grinned and sat up, stretching my back.
“Thank you by the way.” I said. “There's nothing that compares to fresh blood.” Senea smiled and sat next to me.
“I'll bet.” She said rested her head on my shoulder. “You think you could still do your drills?” I nodded. “Good.” Senea said and stood up. I grabbed my pants before I stood up and covered myself before I stood up. I looked at Senea, who was looking at me with a questioning look. I shrugged, and she laughed. I got out of the bed and padded over to my shirt, throwing it on.
“I guess I'll get started with the morning training.” I said and Senea nodded. With that said, I left the small house to have a morning run while Senea stayed in the house and rested.
. . .
. . .
“Alright, just try and dodge this.” Senea smirked and pulled her arms back then circled them around her body. Flames started to gather around her torso and with a quick jerk towards me; the fire lurched out from her arms, strait towards me. Before the fire reached me, I sprang into action. I leapt to the left, dodging the huge pillar of fire and leaving Senea open to attack.
I ran strait for the firebender, but she pulled her arms back and in her arms wake, flames from the pillar dissolved and reformed around her arms again. My arm connected with hers, and the flames that were roiling around her arm traveled to mine, scorching the flesh of my arm. Growling, I spun around in a circle. The flames on my arm whiffed out and I snapped a kick at Senea. She blocked the kick with her other arm.
”Shit!” I cursed and jumped away. I couldn't win at close combat with her like that. I put out the flames consuming my leg. And looked at Senea. “Well,” I smirked. “I did dodge it.” Senea smiled a brittle smile.
“That you did.” She said. “Then try this.” She pulled her arms around again and shot a column of fire with her left hand at me. I dodged to the left and ran for her again. I didn't get a foot closer to her when she had sent another fire blast my way. I thought in a split second and dropped to the ground, missing the flames by an inch. I collapsed on the ground and lay still for a second. Senea was over my in a flash. I felt a crack as she slammed her elbow in my chest for a finisher.
“It's over.” She laughed and stood up. My sternum was cracked, that was easy to tell. If I were a human, I would be out. But I wasn't a human. I held my breath and pushed myself up with my arms. Then I spun around, twisting my arms across the dirt. My leg connected with Senea and she was thrown into a nearby tree then ricocheted off it, colliding with the ground. I pushed myself onto my feet, pulling my arms into one of Senea's favorites stances.
Senea was still for a second, and then stood up slowly. She looked over my stance carefully. After a few moments, she nodded in approval. Then Senea rushed at me, thrusting a fist at me, I countered it by knocking her hand away and tried to make my fist connect with her stomach. In a flash she ignited her arm in flames and pushed my arm away. I could feel the blistering heat from the flames. The heat seemed to penetrate me. I could almost feel the heat coming with me as I jumped away.
I landed on the ground away from Senea and with a hard exhale, all the heat that traveled with me exploded away from me towards Senea. A sea of fire rolled out from my body and traveled everywhere I couldn't see anything but fire. I could only think, did I do this? A few seconds later, everything went black.
. . .
. . .
Everything was dark. Where was I? Was I alive? The last thing I remember… I was being enveloped in flames… and the flames came from me? Can I firebend? Oh shit, this made my head hurt.
“You finally awake?” Said a voice. I tried to open my eyes, but my eyelids were too heavy. No matter, I knew who it was.
“Apparently, Senea.” I whispered hoarsely. I was in our house. That put me at ease.
“Sorry about that, you're head must really hurt.” She said, stroking my forehead with her hand. “I had to knock you out before the fire got too out of control.” I took a deep breath and exhaled. “So… I didn't know you can firebend.” I heard her say in a sharp tone. I opened my eyes with much difficulty and looked at the girl next to me.
“Neither did I.” I whispered. Senea smiled and leaned down, kissing me gently. She pulled back after a few seconds and asked me, “So, why do you think you can now firebend?” I thought for a minute. Then I remembered something.
“The person that made me a vampire taught me the basics of being a vampire in this world. She taught me how to survive and other things. One of the things she taught me was about benders and vampires. But before she told me that, she told me about `Blood pets' as she put it. When we vampires take stay with a human for an extended period, they give us blood to survive on, like you have been doing.” I looked over Senea; she had numerous healing cuts on her wrists and fresh teeth wounds on her neck. “An extended length of time staying with one single human will not cause any change in anything.”
“But,” I continued. “With a bender… after taking the benders blood for an extended time, a matter of years, the vampire might inherit the bending ability.” Senea opened her mouth to say something, but thought better of it. “So… since I have been… feeding… off you for a long time, and in bulk only recently, I have apparently inherited your firebending ability.”
Senea stared at me for a long time, then smiled. “Well,” She began. “We had better start your training then, huh?”
. . .
“So that is how I know how to firebend.” Kyle finished and sat back, letting his listeners dwell on this information. Lets see if they figure the rest out.
“So…” Katara asked. “If you're a vampire, how come you can be out in the sunlight?” Kyle nodded and smiled.
“That was one of the first things I perfected with my new firebending abilities. Now that I could bend the suns rays, I made it a point to learn how to bend the rays around me. So, with the suns rays around me instead of falling on me, I could be out in the sunlight.” Katara `aah'ed and nodded. Aang scratched his head and asked his question.
“Doesn't that take a lot of concentration?” Kyle nodded.
“Yes. It took me a year or so to learn to do it passively. Now I barely notice I'm doing it.” Aang smiled and sat back against his rock, petting Momo's head. Kyle looked at Sokka, expecting him to ask a question. Sokka held up his hand and shook his head, indicating that he had no question.
“Alright then, I'll continue. Unless you want to go to sleep now?” He asked his listeners. They all shook their heads. “Alright then.”
. . .
Another couple of years had passed since that day. I could tell how time was passing because Senea was now twenty-one years old. It was her birthday. She was now a full-grown woman. She had certainly grown very nicely. I would say that she rivaled Victoria in terms of beauty. In strength and skill… that I didn't know. Senea had kept her hair long; it reached down to her waist in dark waves. Her eyes were a dark brown. Her face had a sharp focus to it.
She was beautiful.
I broke my gaze from Senea and concentrated back to my book. It was about firebending and its usage in swordplay. It was mainly review on my form but I was bored. Senea had me read through every book in town twice. But at least it was something to do that was constructive as opposed too destructive. I glanced back as Senea.
She was silently chewing her rice and periodically glancing at her book, Herbs and Spices of the World. I smiled; I enjoyed times like this. They were soothing, relaxing. I wish this could go on forever.
“Hey, Kyle?” Senea asked me, not looking up from her book. I put my book down.
“Yea?” I asked in return.
“…” She didn't say anything at first. She was staring unblinking into her book. “Did… did you know there's a weed that can cure burns?” She flinched slightly and turned the page.
“Yes, isn't it the bulkei week?” I asked, remembering that chapter. Senea nodded and turned to the next page. I smiled and laughed. “Hey, happy birthday again.” Senea looked up at me, startled. “Twenty-one, huh?” She smiled guiltily.
“Yea but how old would that make you?” She asked. I frowned and thought about that question.
“Hmm… I don't exactly know how old I am… I would guess I around…eighty or so…” I scratched my chin and smiled. “Wow… I lost count.” Senea laughed.
“Wow, just when I thought I was old…” She and I laughed for a minute then stopped. We were quiet for another minute then I went back to my book. I felt Senea looking at me for a while afterwards. I looked back a Senea; she had an unreadable look on her face. I raised an eyebrow.
“Yea?” I asked, shaking the girl out of her stupor.
“What? Oh, sorry…” She mumbled and picked her book back up.
“No, what is it?” I asked again. Senea took a deep, slow breath and shut her book, putting it aside her half eaten plate.
She stared at me for a minute then took another deep breath. “Kyle, I've been thinking for a long time…” I chuckled.
“Uh oh…” I joked. Senea smiled, and then became serious again.
“I'm being serious, Kyle.” I cleared my throat and held my hand forward, indicating she should continue. “Now, I've been thinking about this for a while and I have something to ask you.” She took another deep breath and exhaled. I was beginning to get nervous. She was starting to act like she had when he first fed off her… “I…” She began. I waited patiently for Senea to continue, she didn't.
”Senea,” I started. She looked up at me quickly. “Whatever you want to ask me, I will do. You have done so much for me already. I can never be out of your debt.” I said, smiling. Senea smiled back at me, the beginnings of tears in her eyes.
”Senea,” I started. She looked up at me quickly. “Whatever you want to ask me, I will do. You have done so much for me already. I can never be out of your debt.” I said, smiling. Senea smiled back at me, the beginnings of tears in her eyes.
“Thank you.” She whispered. Senea took another deep breath and scooted over next to me. She took my hand in hers and kissed it softly. “Kyle, what do you think about me?” She asked, her dark eyes piercing into my light ones. I was silent for a minute, thinking about my answer.
“I love you.”
Senea smiled. “Really? You do?” I nodded. “I'm so glad.” She looked at my hand, still smiling. After a few seconds, she looked back at me. “I love you, as well.” She smiled warmly at me. I returned her smile and kissed her hand gently. “I want to be with you always.” She whispered softly, rubbing my hand against her cheek. “That's why…” She started, but stopped. I stroked her hair, encouraging her to continue. I started to understand where she was going with this conversation.
“That's why I… want you to make me a vampire… like you.” She looked away from me, blushing furiously. I didn't speak for a few minutes. I knew I heard her correctly. She wanted me to do what Victoria did to me. No, I would never leave Senea alone like Victoria did. What should I do? Senea looked back at me, her expression unreadable. Or perhaps I didn't want to read it. What should I do? I know she wants to, but is it the right decision? What should I do?
Senea leaned forward, resting her head on my shoulder. “I'll do anything you want. Just… please… grant this one wish…” She whispered into my ear. I shivered involuntarily. Senea smiled in spite of herself and pushed me against the side of the bed. Without speaking, she pulled her shirt over her head and kissed me roughly. The kiss ended as fast as it had started. She pulled away and before I had a chance to speak, Senea had captured my lips in another strong kiss.
“Please…” She pleaded as she pulled away and quickly returned with another kiss.
. . .
“I made Senea a vampire that night.” Kyle looked up at the sky, watching the stars blankly. Aang rocked back and forth on his haunches. Kyle was unable to tell if he was bored or uncomfortable.
Probably uncomfortable.
Katara was looking into the fire, trying to hide her deep red blush in the light. She didn't know what to think. Being next to Kyle embarrassed her. Embarrassed by being a girl. Would she ever do something like that to a boy? She could never imagine doing something like that.
Sokka leaned back, and laughed. “So, you have had quick the uh… exciting life, huh?” Kyle sneered at the dirt. Sure enough, he had fangs protruding out of his mouth. Aang shivered.
“If you want to call it that.”
“So what happened after that?” Sokka asked, interested in what Happened to Senea if she wasn't here.
Kyle inhaled slowly. “Well, she and I lived together for about another ten years, feeding off each other's blood. Vampires can do that.” He clarified. “The townspeople didn't really mind either, as long as we were the same as always; which we were.” Katara smiled, it was good to live peacefully. She had never really know what peace was.
“That is,” Kyle continued. “Until the night Victoria came back.” His listeners stiffened. “That was the second night that changed my life.”
. . .
Pound. Pound. Pound.
Someone was knocking on the door loudly. My eyes snapped open and I jumped out of bed, grabbed a pair of pants and ran to the door. Before I opened it, I glanced at Senea; she poked her head out of the blankets. I motioned for her to lay back down, she did.
I opened the door, and revealed Hank, our closest neighbor.
“Hank… what's wrong?” I asked sleepily, wiping the sleep from my eyes. Hank looked frantic.
“Kyle, you and Senea must leave here at once! The fire nation has come here in force!” He whispered loudly. I looked back at Senea; she had leapt out of bed and was hastily finding her clothes. “They have gathered the population from the inner town and are getting the people living just outside of town. It's only a matter of time before they get here! You must leave!” I ran my hand through my hair.
“What about you and Hailey?” I queried. Hand shook his head.
“Don't worry about us, we are leaving too.” I nodded and put my hand on the old man's shoulder.
“Thank you, Hank.” I smiled at my friend. He put his hand on my shoulder and the two of us parted. I watched his disappear in the direction of his home and I shut the door. I rush over to Senea, who has started packing spare clothes into a bag.
“I know, we need to leave.” She said tersely. I helped pack the rest of our belongings and we were about to leave, when Senea stopped me. “Wait.”
I halted and turned back to Senea. “Yea?” Senea dropped her bag and ran into my arms, embracing me tightly. “Senea, wha-“
“Whatever happens…” Senea whispered into my chest. “I want you to know that I love you.” I gently put my hand on her head.
“Don't worry, nothing will happen to us.” Senea lifted her head up and smiled, nodding.
Gathering our things, we exit our home and turn the corner; and we were looking at two-dozen fire nation soldiers. Each of them drew their swords and held them at the ready, leveled at us. Senea and I when about to break through when I heard her voice.
“Don't attack them.” The speaker was a woman, from the pitch of the voice. I knew who it was at once. I felt my blood run cold. She stepped out from the group of soldiers and walked over to Senea and I.
It was Victoria.
“And so I finally found you, neh?” She smiled tightly and reached up to me, stroking my cheek softly. I felt Senea tense next to me. I looked at Victoria closely. She hadn't changed at all.
I saw black.
I heard loud voices around me. It hurt to open my eyes, but given the circumstances, I strained myself to. All around me were fire nation soldiers. I looked around, trying to find out where I was. I was bound by rope, extremely tough rope. I recognized the buildings around me and it hit me. I was in the town square.
“About time you woke up, `little brother'.” I heard next to me. I looked toward the voice and saw a person I hadn't seen for years.
“Nii-san” I said and nodded to the man besides me. He was my `older brother', Vincent, or the person Victoria mad into a vampire before me. He had long black hair and sharp green eyes. He did always kind of scare me. “What are you-“
“-doing here?” He finished my sentence, I had forgotten he could read minds. “You should know. You don't, but you should. Be that as it may, you'll find out soon enough.” He finished and walked through the throng of soldiers.
A few seconds later, the crowd parted and I saw Victoria sanding next to Senea, who was bound as well. Victoria walked over to me and lowered her head to eye level with me.
“It has been so long, Koibito.” She said sweetly. “Did you miss me?” I said nothing. Victoria waited for a few seconds before losing her patience. She stood up and swung her hand at me, catching me upside the skull, causing a loud WHAM to emanate from the collision. I fell to the side and collapsed on the ground. I couldn't be sure, but I thought I heard Senea cry out as I hit the dirt. I regained my conciseness after a few seconds and sat back up. I felt blood dripping from my ear and my eyesight was distorted a little in my right eye.
Victoria kneeled back down to me. “You should know the rule about creating a vampire.” She sneered at me, loosing all but a little of her beauty. I looked back at her. What was she talking about? “You never create a vampire without my permission.” She whispered, glaring at me with loathing. “Miserable failure.” She finished and kicked me in the forehead, knocking he back a few feet. She didn't kick me hard enough to knock me out. I sat back up, watching as she retreated back to Senea.
Victoria reached for something on the ground, and picked it up. I realized what it was, it was Senea's sword. Her curved Katana that she treasured so dearly.
“You should know what the penalty is for your transgression…” Victoria said loudly. She withdrew the blade from the scabbard. Her eyes flew to me.
“Death.”
With that she walked over to Senea and pulled her to her knees by the hair. Senea cried out in pain. What could she do against Victoria? What could I do against Victoria? I could only watch in horror as Victoria carried out her `justice'. With a swift motion, Victoria forced the blade through the back of Senea's throat. I saw Senea's eyes widen for a second, then travel down to the blade protruding through her neck. She slowly brought her trembling hands up to the blade and clasped it, as if making for sure it was really there.
Her eyes slowly turned to mine and she looked at me for what seemed to be the longest time. Senea smiled at me and the light in her eyes disappeared.
Victoria withdrew the blade from Senea's throat and motioned for the soldier's to bring me to her. I felt numb as the soldiers hefted me over to where Senea's body used to lay. All that remained was a pile of ash that was being blown away in the slow breeze. What could I do? What should I do? Do I even want to live any more? I felt like not existing any more. I was shoved to the ground and Victoria grabbed my head, lifting me up. What could I do? What can I do?
What would Senea want me to do?
Acting in an instant, I shifted my body to the side. Senea's blade pierced air beside my neck and I reached up, grabbing the sword's blade. I pulled the blade, cutting my hands, away from Victoria's grasp. I stood up and spun around, kicking Victoria. She brought her arms up and absorbed the impact, although she still was thrown back into a crowd of soldiers. I glanced at Vincent; has was not moving, only looking at me.
I grabbed the sheath for Senea's sword and ran out of the town square, jumping over numerous fire nation troops. I needed to escape, Senea would want me to escape. I would escape.
If I could elude Victoria, that is. I needed to get to the forest to do that. I was running past houses and farms. I wonder is everybody else made it out alright? Someone ran from the side of a building and charged at me. He didn't look like a fire nation soldier, but he was a vampire. It must have been one of my `younger brothers'. I sidestepped as he swung at me, and slammed the hilt of Senea's sword into his skull. The vampire cried out and fell backwards into a wall. I took the opportunity to run back to my house.
I got there in a couple of minutes, and grabbed the back that Senea had packed. I looked back towards the town, realizing that nobody had followed me. Victoria had let me go, I realized.
She would life to regret that mistake.
I ran into the trees to safety.
. . .
“The end.” Kyle finished, staring into the crackling cinders. There was silence for a few minutes. Then Aang broke it.
“I'm sorry Kyle.” Kyle shrugged.
”It happens. That's why I hate the fire nation, though.” Aang nodded sadly.
“So is Victoria part of the fire nation?” Sokka asked. Kyle nodded.
“As well as all her children. Vincent, that other vampire I saw that night, and any others she has made up until now.”
“How many do you think there are?”
Kyle thought for a few seconds. “I was the second, after Vincent. So… lets assume that Victoria makes another vampire every… fifty years or so… if I was the second… then she would have around… six new ones?” He counted his fingers. “Yea, that would be my guess. That's… only if she makes a new one every fifty years, mind you.” He corrected.
Aang interjected. “I have a question… if you could learn firebending from Senea… could you learn any of the other elements as well?” Kyle nodded.
“I was wondering how long it would take you to catch on.” Aang perked up. “Yes, I can bend all four elements.”
Aand jumped up. “Really? Wow!” Sokka raised an eyebrow.
“Oh yea? Prove it.” Kyle smirked and pointed up. All three of his listeners looked skyward and above them was a huge slab of earth. Sokka coughed and looked back down. “Ok, I believe you.”
Kyle dropped his smile and sighed. “Do you guys, and girls,” He added, looking at Katara, who was looking up at the slab of earth. “mind if we stop storytime for the night? All this has tired me out…” He said tiredly. All three agreed and the four of them split up to go about their nightly routines. No one said a word until they were ready to sleep.
Katara, Aang, and Sokka were in their sleeping bags and the fire was put out. Kyle sat against a tree, his sword resting against his body.
“Goodnight, all.” Aang said quietly, without his usual hype. The other mumbled their replies and sleep took them.
Kyle looked up at the sky and sighed softly. Was Senea smiling down on him still?
. . .
AN: For the vampires getting bending thing, I figured that since vampire intake blood all the time, the DNA in the blood gets transferred too. But its recessive. So since the vampire has DNA already, the recessive DNA is erased.
Benders would have a 24th chromosome, (my explanation) which gives them the ability to bend. Since vampires don't have that chromosome, and if they intake the blood of a bender, the 24th chromosome (the one that contains bending) is transferred to them. Additional bending elements are added onto the 24th chromosome, adding more chromotids to it.
That's my explanation on how vamps can `learn' bending.
