- Chapter One
Water trickled down the old rusted pipe attached to a row of tenements. Black bricks covered with ferns and mould added to the dreariness of the whole area. It suited her. Even as a child she knew the world was full of evil, even in every human being. She grew up knowing only that.
The sky lit up grumbling as though woken from an enjoyable snooze.
“Yea, Yea I hear you” murmured the seven year old. She stood watching the cars below her, “any minute now.”
His heavy breathing and fast paced run was all she sensed at that moment. Another ‘victim’. He was going to die in exactly four minutes and he didn’t even know it as he rushed home. She stepped of the ledge of the old building letting herself swoop down closer to her target.
Black hair lashed at her face and the rain poured down which didn’t help. She frowned, the night really was suited. The world was a dark place but that instant it seemed so terribly morbid. Shaking her head she dispelled the common argument in her young mind. She found that one side of her liked the darkness, didn’t mind what her life asked her to do but the other seemed to want more, she could never tell what though, she didn’t know anything but the hurt and pain. The dark. She turned her attention back to the man who had been running, he was pinned against a wall some would be punk kicking the shit out of him while another searched his bag for valuables she imagined. They didn’t seem to impressed with there findings. The taller man dropped the bag and pulled out a gun from his jacket pocket aiming it, the other man begged. It was hopeless. The large bang that seemed to echo through her mind signalled his end. It was pointless, always was. You couldn’t outdo death. Again she sighed and found her feet touching the black mucky ground though she couldn’t feel it, not really. Angels no matter what they did couldn’t truly feel, not as mortals did. The murderers had already ran taking what they could. The victim lay silently, arms spread. The blood flowed from his chest making a pool of crimson around him, mixing with the rain that persisted to fall from the heavens. He resembled that of a cross, “How ironic.” Blinking he watched her, wide eyed. Most likely shock, it was usually like that. It was no surprise they usually sent her. She was a child, appeared innocent and apparently calmed souls and helped there progression. She held out her hand a strange eerie glow surrounding her. The man seemed lost, afraid however he sat up out of his body his hand indeed reaching hers. There was no other choice. He was cautious but placed his hand in that of the child’s, she smiled letting it go black.
“Went well I assume”
“Oh yeah awesome, another murder victim to add to the long list”
“You know, for a kid your terribly sarcastic”
Ice blue eyes locked with those which weren’t meant for an innocent child and although she was a child, innocence was something she’d never know.
“What are you going to do about that?….kill me?” She shrugged and no longer looked in his eyes for it wasn’t wise to do so. She could joke with him to an extent. As a child she would push the boundaries but knew the limit. He held the suffering of all those dead or dying, part of her feared that and perhaps he liked knowing that. No matter how he looked physically though, those eyes that held so much mortal pain never changed.
“Go bother Lucus” he replied swatting the younger one away, “I believe he’s got a car accident to deal with.”
“Must I” she bit her lip, she shouldn’t have been so insolent.
“Imagine an angel of death not willing to do her job” He towered above her and she shuddered.
“I didn’t mean to…” she stuttered.
“Yes. It appears so. You are young, you have much to learn. Now Go”
“Sure thing…Death” she smiled
“Don’t call me that!”
“But its true” a voice called out despite having already left to find the older death angel.
Who would have known that a ‘simple’ car accident could change so much.

The rain viciously lashed the ground bouncing back from the impact. Police cars surrounded the corner of a road. Red and blue lights lit up the dark area and as always there was plenty of people eager to see what had happened, despite there being no reason for it. Engines were roaring in the distance and approaching the scene though she imagined they were going to be rather late. She could see two cars. One was smashed into a pole, the front bent around it. Paramedics surrounded it shouting orders and how they were going to approach there latest job. It seemed that whoever was inside was stuck. She found her eyes moving towards the other car which was far from what it once was. Flames surrounded it turning it black, the fire cast great shades of red’s, yellow’s and orange lighting up the black sky.
“Exploded I’d say”
She looked up.
He was Tall, at least six foot she guessed. His brown hair had sections of black running through it, strangely natural and it just reached his glowing green eyes. His attire was as always simple black trousers, red shirt and a long black jacket. Angels only needed one outfit she imagined in ten years or so she’d still be floating around in her simple white dress. His wings were made up of black and brown feathers and when open he could put many an angel to shame.
“Lucus, how many were in that car”
“Two, a couple. They have a son of nine but it wasn’t his time. The other car has three, the woman in the back is all ready dead. The man in the drivers seat has about two more minutes to live and his sister beside him will be taken to hospital but its futile. He looked bored, “Well I guess I have a job to fulfil” he muttered in a dull tone before approaching the exploded car.
She had to admit she was curious as to how he would take the passengers to the next life when they were surely cinders. She walked towards the car to see how Lucus would go about his task but was distracted. A young boy, darkened by ash with cuts on his arms struggled to free himself from one of the ambulance crew.
He was there son. That one thought brought it out again, that other side of her nagging away. She felt a sadness within herself, a sense of loss. She turned back to the car noticing one of the burnt doors slightly ajar, Lucus had moved to the other car while people started to put out the fire. The young boy seemed to free himself and ran screaming helplessly for his parents. She panicked, she didn’t know why but she felt this urge to help him, not exactly part of her job. Without really thinking she ran forward placing her hands in front of him “Stop” she called out as if forgetting herself, he wouldn’t hear her, nor feel her hands for that matter. He would simply go straight through…But that was it. The turning point you could say. He did stop and all though she did not feel him she knew there was impact. His eyes glazed over. The guy from the ambulance ran forward mumbling something useless and trying to comfort the boy.
“Why, What went wrong?” the question seemed to be directed at herself but that was impossible...right? But then he looked right at her his crimson eyes red and blurry. She gasped her eyes widening in surprise. Still it could just be a coincidence right? She replied out of sheer curiosity to see what would happen.
“Life’s not fair. It was just…their time.”
The boy turned preparing to walk away and she let out a breath cursing her over active imagination. She knew it hadn’t been possible.
“Hurry up, we need to go” she turned to see Lucus call her before turning to leave. She began to follow until…
“So what? What about my time..” it was nothing more than a whisper yet she heard it.
“Come on. I want my break before a suicide”
“You should go” mumbled the boy before leaving the scene.
The girl stood in utter surprise. Not only had this kid heard her but he must have heard Lucus too. She couldn’t understand it. She let her feet rise from the ground before catching up to Lucus.
“Lucus?”
“hmm, what?”
“You know mortals…they don’t see or hear us…do they?”
The older angel paused, “You know they cant, why ask”
She stopped unsure of whether to say what she had experienced, “It’s just, that boy asked a question and I answered. Lucus he replied. He looked right at me and replied!”
“You know its not possible” He seemed uncomfortable before facing her and placing his hands on her small shoulders, “Look those kinds of things don’t happen. Don’t mention this, ok. It was probably just a coincidence.” He quickly ruffled her hair before continuing on his way.
She wasn’t sure about his response. Why shouldn’t she mention it? What if it wasn’t just a coincidence? She would have to prove it but now she was sleepy and little angels had to sleep too.

It must have been a fortnight since the accident. She couldn’t be sure as time varied where she was compared with earth. To her it was only around two days that had passed. She had been eager to see the boy again, she needed to know if what had happened had been real and not some part of her imagination. A good thing about being an angel, you could find whomever you wanted with a simple thought. It wasn’t long before she was sailing through the clouds and in front of a large mansion like building.
‘rich humans’ She had wondered who would have taken the boy after his parents. Looking back, part of her wished she hadn’t.
The building itself made her uncomfortable. It was old and gothic in design, something she usually found appealing however something here felt wrong and foreboding. Part of her wanted to flee, a feeling she’d never experienced. Nevertheless she was determined and continued. She felt the boys presence clearly and approached a large closed window with a balcony. Spider webs crept along the top of the old glass adding to the house’s clique creepiness. She heard the shouting though before she saw anything. It was a man laughing maliciously, his face red from his anger. The young boy lay on the floor shaking and his face tear stained. She noticed the blood and cuts on his arms and legs and for the first time in her life she felt sick. She had seen worse and yet now more than ever she wanted to throw up, either that or take the life of the brutal man who had left the room with a key, locking the door. Without a second thought she pushed open the window allowing her bare feet to touch the floor. It was stone and if she could feel she imagined it would have been cold. She approached the boy, his eyes were shut tightly whilst he continued to shake. She could feel his fear and pain. Lying beside him she made sure her small black wings were back.. Her pale skin glowed unnaturally whilst her plain white dress seemed to float around her small frame. Her pale skin was only highlighted by her jet black hair and ebony wings, in fact the feathers were reminiscent of a raven’s which was the reasoning behind her name.
She called out softly so as not to scare him, “shhh don’t cry…”
His eyes opened though he did not stop. She laid an arms length from him and he appeared to be hiding his arms from her, ashamed. His navy shirt was torn and his arms from what she could see were bruised and cut. His skin was pale, even for a human, and his bluish grey hair fell across his face in a disarray. She reached out her hand faltering as the boy drew away from her. Her eyes were gentle and she tried desperately to convey to him that she was no threat. Again she reached out content when he remained still. She wasn’t sure what she was doing but her hand touched his arm, wary of the cuts new and old. She traced the grazes delicately with the tips of her fingers, her eyes remained locked with the boys. He flinched slightly and she looked to her hand in surprise noticing the newest cuts were closing up. She wasn’t the only one surprised.
“Who are you?” his voice was quiet and confused.
She stuttered, what would she say? She’d never spoken to a human before, one that was living anyways. As far as she was aware it shouldn’t have been possible. The truth? She continued to go through her options in her head before she heard him again.
“Your name?” He seemed more curious than anything now.
She gazed up at the boy in front of her and beamed.
“Raven”
He smiled slightly, “I like your wings”
She returned the smile. “Thank you”
His saddened expression returned and it pained her to see it, though she knew not why.
“I want to help you” She had said it without even thinking. Something just took over in her as though she had another duty in life other than helping the dead move on.
“What’s your name?”
“Kai”
Smiling Raven held out her hand allowing him to place his own in hers. From then they had become….friends almost, but she had been stupid and naive.
--
~~
For the following two years she had visited him whenever possible. They had been each others secrets and they liked that. Whenever things were too much for the boy, she would be there, his angel. She couldn’t do much for him when his grandfather was an abusive, sadistic bastard but she did all she could.
“I’ll see you in a couple of days”
“That’s awhile” he groaned.
“Well I have a job to do you know” she frowned, “If you need me I’ll be there”
“yeah, I know”
To think that that would be there last good memory together still got to her. It had been after another regular visit. She had left to go to the supermarket for a heart attack, not her own. She waited patiently before she felt him. A heavy weight upon her.
“Raven” his voice was emotionless and she could not lie, she was afraid.
They were currently on the room of the building, the sky was grey and the weather was generally dull and cloudy.
Her eyes found his momentarily but she saw how they blazed red betraying his tone dead voice and she shuddered.
“..yes” she answered though hesitant.
“You were late” he was perfectly calculating, she could imagine his mind picking at her own trying to work her out.
“How, I don’t understand” she was usually good with keeping on time for deaths. Fear continued to grow inside her bubbling away. She would need to be punished, she knew that much but how?
The tall black figure began to circle her like a predator, in a way he was.
“Where were you Raven? Just where have you been spending all your time?”
The sky darkened and the black mist surrounding him stretched along the rooftop, she had no choice but to risk a lie.
“I’ve just been exploring. I must have lost track of time. I didn’t mean to!” she looked hopefully at the figure.
He paused, “I hoped of better from You”
Suddenly she felt herself lifted from the ground though she saw nothing but mist beneath her small feet, she was now eye level with him. Her mind screamed at her to do something. She had lied to him and he knew.
“I used to know you, then you became so…distant. You honestly expect me to not have noticed you sneaking off!” his voice had risen as he mocked her stupidity. His anger was evident and his skin paled for a moment, it was then that she was extremely afraid that he might have revealed his true form. He did not though. He remained in his usual body of what would appear a mortal man but far from it. Power and death radiated of him. She was pulled towards him and his hand raised her chin up as he looked at her, she avoided his eyes. The eyes of death were one of the few things that could actually bring an angel pain, no matter their calling.
He leaned in, his mouth inches from her ear and whispered in a chilling manner, “ Your job is not to converse with living human boys. Taking after that pathetic mother of yours is nothing to be proud of!” With that he threw her to the ground, “You are not a Guardian Angel Raven. Your mind doesn’t work as there’s does. You belong to me!” His voice was full of disgust and venom. She hadn’t known her mother. He had told her he didn’t know! He had lied to her!
She pushed herself from the ground. She felt so confused and hurt. She stood defiantly anger filling her heart.
“You lied to me!” she shouted.
“As you did to me” His tone became harsh and commanding, “You will not see him again!”
Despite a voice telling her desperately to accept her fate she couldn’t allow it.
“But he’s my friend” she cried.
‘God, have I really become so pitiful. At 9 I am beyond my years. I know more than most humans three times my age and yet…I am lonely.’ her thoughts did nothing to comfort her.
Death did not reply. Instead he turned abruptly laughing heartlessly at her. Swiftly she was lifted of the ground again and felt herself thrown against a wall. A sickening crack followed but she didn’t feel it, not really. He could do what he wanted to her but she was still angel and angels couldn’t feel, nor taste. They were pretty much limited in life.
“You have no friends girl” he spat before seemingly fading to nothingness.
She lay on the ground for several more minutes before someone picked her up, there was only one person who would be there for her…Lucus. She cried.
--
~~
The confinement she suffered after her argument with Death had affected more than her. She had lost a month and every day she felt the pain. He was calling her, his voice desperate and she could do nothing. She remained on the hard stone floor in what was nothing more than a box room with no doors…nothing. As soon as she was free she would see him. He needed to know why she hadn’t been there!
“I miss you” she muttered into the darkness of the room.
She held her breath as the walls began to fade. Her Confinement was up and before she could face a lecture she was gone.
The house came to view faster than she realised and she was in his room even sooner. He had already changed so much…she couldn’t help but gasp. He sat on his bed holding a towel round his leg tightly. It was drenched in red. Pain was evident in his face but he pushed to refrain showing it. He was becoming cold. Looking up he seemed surprise however that quickly turned to anger.
“What are you doing here?!” he demanded, “You said two days! You said you’d be here!”
“It’s not that simple. I meant to be here” she retaliated.
He was infuriated failing to listen to what she was saying. He would have before.
“GO! I don’t need You! What’s the point. Everyone leaves me anyways” he cried.
She ran to him, she didn’t know what else to do, “Kai, No! I tried. Please listen!”
He pushed himself of the bed and struggled to reach her, the blood ran down his right leg making him flinch. She hated seeing him hurt and it killed her knowing she couldn’t do anything.
“You don’t understand what I do, whose…whose in charge…of me. He found out! He wouldn’t let me see you. Please” she begged him to understand and although he was mad he was also upset. He couldn’t not believe her, she was pleading with him. He frowned as he reached her.
“I don’t want you to hate me” he muttered, almost to himself.
She shook her head, “I’ll never hate you” she smiled briefly before the lightning started.
It had been a calm day. Peaceful. That’s how she knew what was happening. When the thunder hit she knew he had found out where she was. The Rain began to hit the ground with such fervour she panicked and placed her hands on the eleven year olds shoulders, “Kai, look I don’t know when I’ll ever be able to see you again. Please believe it is not my choice to leave you!”
He was confused and it was understandable. “Raven what’s going on?!” he commanded but she was no longer listening. She was only aware of the black clouds growing around the house and the booming thunder. The treacherous rain itself seemed to be heading for the old building. She was terrified. What would happen to her now? To Kai? She turned to him desperate to savour there last moment.
“You’ve been my one real friend” she whispered before leaning forward and brushing her lips against his own briefly. It was innocent but she just wanted him to know she cared and how much his friendship had meant to her. Although she never really felt it the boy had and he was solely aware of the tingling sensation on his lips.
“Raven?” he whispered noticing the tears in her eyes.
“Goodbye” Arms of mist began to pull her away from the boy, the balcony windows swung open and the rain entered the room. Lighting lit up the sky while the thunder roared wildly and the small girl was pulled into it at a frightening speed. Kai reached for her, shouting for her. But she was gone It was silent.
The boy found himself staring out at his balcony in shock. She’d been taken from him and he doubted he’d ever see her again. His only friend.
“How utterly pathetic”
Kai jumped in surprise grabbing his leg as he did so and cringing in pain. Before him stood a tall man with long black hair, he wore only black and his eyes were a tremendous blood red. He didn’t know why but as he continued to look into those eyes tears fell from his eyes, his very heart ached and he found himself falling to the floor.
“Who are you!” he demanded.
“Doesn’t matter to you boy. Lets just say my current aim is to destroy this childish…friendship” his face contorted into such disgust as if the very word cause him angst. “It can and never will be”
“It was you” the young boy shouted, “You took her away!”
“oh your smart” he drawled, “You are nothing more than an inconvenience to me” with that the boy was raised from the ground and drawn towards the man…to death.
However an early grave wasn’t what awaited him. A strange brown dust surrounded him and the man began to talk although he wasn’t losing his sense of awareness.
“Forget Kai Hiwatari. Forget”
As the dark figure left with a malicious smirk on his face the young boy fell to the ground.
Water trickled down the old rusted pipe attached to a row of tenements. Black bricks covered with ferns and mould added to the dreariness of the whole area. It suited her. Even as a child she knew the world was full of evil, even in every human being. She grew up knowing only that.

She cried.
