CHAPTER 3: To explain in due time_
Kai felt as though he had only fell a sleep, when he was woken roughly by one of Boris's guards. He was rushed into his own room and told to clean himself up and to look presentable. He did so because he couldn't stop thinking about the look of complete fear on Tala's face as the guard dragged Kai out of the room. After Kai completed dressing, the guard took him to Boris's office. Kai entered the warm room and saw Boris sitting in his chair behind his desk; he looked extremely serious and angry about something.
Boris- “Please Kai, sit down.” (Kai sits) “I have a matter that I need to discuss with you…you see, your grandfather has asked to see you this afternoon. And well, things have been going on down here that I think your grandfather would be better off not knowing.”
A small smirk appeared on Kai's face,
Kai- “Why, because he'd kill you if he found out you had laid a hand on his grandson, your right, he probably would kill you, with his bare hands.”
Boris- “Now see, I knew you wouldn't really be in a co-operative mood concerning this subject, so, basically, I'm not asking you to lie, I'm telling you that you will.”
Boris's voice was calm yet firm, he was dead serious and Kai could see that,
Kai- “So what would you do if I didn't want to lie?”
Kai's voice was unsure, he really didn't want to know why Boris had such confidence in Kai's compliance.
Boris- “Because Kai… if you don't, you will find yourself with one short on your precious team.”
It was the worst thing Boris could have threatened Kai with, the life of his friends, more importantly, Tala's life. Boris already knew that Tala and Kai were close, so it would only make sense that he would go after Tala first. Boris was pleased with Kai's unhappy expression,
Boris- “ So I take it then that you agree with my decision…excellent Kai. Its now a quarter past eleven, if you leave now, you should get to the mansion at noon exactly. Very good then Kai, your dismissed.”
Boris dropped his eye's to the piece of paper on his desk as if to completely ignore Kai, who was glaring at him with murderous intent. One of Boris's goons placed his hand on Kai's shoulder, as if telling Kai that it was time to go. Kai stood slowly, not wanting to fall, he didn't walk though,
Kai- “So what do you expect me to tell my grandfather, that I fell down the stairs. Almost broke my nose, fractured my wrist and some how managed to get bruises and cuts all over my body? That'll convince him.” Kai's voice was completely sarcastic, but he hadn't expected Boris to be amused,
Boris- “Of course not Kai, how terribly unoriginal, just tell him that you got into a fight with Brian, he'll certainly believe that Brian could beat the hell out of you, if he could believe nothing else wrong with you…”
Boris's voice became angrier toward the end of his sentence; he seemed to have a hidden resentment for Voltaire's faith in Kai's abilities. Kai didn't bother to respond, he simply left the room. It took him a while, but he managed to get downstairs and out to the Mercedes that was waiting to take him to Voltaire.
Tala sat at the window in the common room, thinking of all the terrible things that they could be doing to Kai at that moment. He then heard the giant doors of the abbey's entrance scrape open. He looked out and saw two of Boris's men walking Kai out to a car. He suddenly felt relieved that Kai was all right, but where was he going.
Brian, who was sitting at the other window also saw Kai going out to the car,
Brian- “A Mercedes. His going to his grandfather, Voltaire must want to see him.”
Tala- “Do you think Kai will tell him what Boris has been doing to him?”
Brian- “Of course not, Boris would never risk it, he must have threatened Kai some how, given him an alibi for the marks on his body…Boris is way too clever.”
Tala- “I know…I guess it was just wishful thinking that maybe Boris didn't cover all his bases…”
Brian- “You..”
Tala- “What?”
Brian- “He must have threatened Kai with your life…”
All was silent.
Kai was very silent in the car, he could only think of how hard it would be to not tell his grandfather what had been happening. He was never really close to Voltaire, but he knew that there was some kind of feeling that most relatives would call love, that he shared with his grandfather. Kai knew that his grandfather would know that he was lying, but he had no choice, for Tala's sake, he was prepared to do anything.
The Mercedes drove all the way up the long driveway and stopped in front of the massive Hiwatari mansion. Kai stepped out of the car, noticing Boris's guards keeping their distance now that they were in Kai's territory. A man came out of the doors to greet Kai,
Petrov- “Good afternoon Master Kai, its very good to see you.”
Kai was at first unsure of what to say, he hadn't been to the mansion in about four months, and last he was there, he hadn't seen Petrov.
Kai- “Good morning Petrov, its…good to see you too.” He spoke quietly to the butler who had been in his family since Voltaire first inherited his fathers business.
Petrov- “Are you alright Master Kai, you look, ill?”
The older man tried to get a look at Kai, but Kai picked up his walking pace as much as he could.
Kai- “I'm fine, don't worry about me. I just want to see my grandfather and then I want to leave.”
Petrov- “Very well Master Kai, your grandfather is in the study,” they were now inside the house and Boris's guards stood at the front door, “Would you like some tea or anything to eat Master Kai?”
Kai- “No, thank you Petrov.”
Kai walked up the large set of stairs as fast and as straight up as he could. Before long he stood outside the grand study on the second floor of the mansion. After catching his breath from his struggle up the stairs, he turned and with all his strength, he pushed one of the large doors open. He felt as though one of his ribs would tear through his skin as the door shifted, but gritting his teeth, he managed to suppress his cry of agony. When he entered the room, he looked relatively fine. Voltaire looked up as Kai entered the room; he had a small welcoming smile on his face.
Voltaire- “Hello Kai, please come and sit. It is good to see you after so long my grandson.”
Kai came toward the seat that Voltaire had pointed to. It was a double couch, black leather that went so well with the décor of the study. Voltaire had been sitting in his usual one seat, reading a book of his choice. Kai of course could not read the title; his vision hadn't been right since Tala had found him in the `happy place'. Voltaire placed his book down on the small table beside his chair; he then took his reading glasses off. Kai instantly noticed the anger set on Voltaire's face when he noticed the condition Kai was in. Kai sat down slowly without making eye contact with his grandfather,
Voltaire- “Kai…” Kai looked up at Voltaire reluctantly, “What happened to you?”
Tala came out of the shower rubbing his hair dry; he was surprised that Boris hadn't come looking for any of them. He went back into the bathroom and took about a half-hour to do his hair, and then he went back into the room and prepared his clothes to wear. He removed the towel from around his waist and slipped on his black boxer shorts. He then started to get dressed. When pulling his black shirt over his head he was careful not to hurt the cut above his eye, which turned out to be quite severe. He was putting his shoes on just as Brian barged into his room,
Tala- “What the…don't you know about knock…”
Brian- “Tala, come quick, its Spencer!”
Tala put on his last shoe and without another word grabbed his jacket and ran out of the room with Brian.
Tala was doing up his jacket by the time they reached Spencer's room. Brian practically broke the doors down to get inside. Tala was in complete shock at the site of the seventeen-year-old. Spencer was curled up in a ball like a scared child, lying on the cold floor with nothing on.
Tala- “Spencer, what the hell? What's wrong?”
Brian- “He won't speak, I didn't know what to do, when I left him yesterday he was fine…but now…”
Boris- “But now he is a brainwashed fool…”
Tala and Brian spun around to find Boris standing behind them in the doorway, his usual sick grin on his ugly face.
Tala- “What did you do to him, tell me Boris!”
Boris- “Oh don't worry Tala, I'm not going to do it to you, but I have got something special planned for each of you wonderful boys (laughs)”
Tala's mind started to spin; hundreds of things ran through his mind in a single second before a final thought settled.
Tala- “Run…Brian, RUN!”
Without another moment wasted Brian was running behind Tala. Tala charged directly at Boris and with all of his strength he knocked Boris clear out of the way. He nearly fell himself, but Brian helped him regain his balance in time so as not to slow their momentum. The two boys ran as fast as their paining legs could carry them. In the back of Tala's mind he knew that this little stunt was futile, that Boris would catch them and he would be so much angrier. But despite this thought, all he could think about was what Kai had said,
`Why don't we at least try Tala…' and so all Tala really wanted to do was try, so he kept running, Brian right behind him, also doubting the success of their small escape. But they were lucky that they knew the abbey extremely well, and they were smaller and faster than Boris and his goons, `This might work, it just might…' Tala tried desperately to reassure himself, but to no avail. Brian ran straight into Tala, bringing them both down to the ground extremely hard. Tala had stopped dead in his tracks.
Brian- “Tala, why'd you stop?” he looked at Tala who was getting up slowly, but with a look of fear on his face. Brian looked in front of him to find Boris and six of his goons waiting, and running footsteps came to a halt behind them.
Tala- “Oh no…”
Kai allowed the story to run through his head, so that he would have the `lie' right.
Voltaire- “Well, what happened to you, why are you so hurt?”
Kai- “I…uh…got into a…fight, yesterday…”
Voltaire- “A fight?…mmm, with who Kai?”
Kai could already hear his grandfathers doubting voice.
Kai- “With, Brian…we disagreed and so…uh, we fought.” Kai was speaking clear but soft.
Voltaire- “So again, why are you so beaten, I shouldn't have to see you look like this, you could pound Brian to a pulp, you expect me to believe he did this to you. Don't insult my intelligence Kai.”
Kai- “No, really grandfather, we just had a fight…”
Voltaire- “Don't lie to me Kai, I suggest you take this opportunity to speak, or I will pay the abbey a vis…”
Kai- “NO! No, please don't, stay away from the abbey…for me, for my sake.”
Voltaire- “Why?” he looked at Kai with a very calm expression on his face.
Kai- “Just because, you don't understand, you can't…we're just training really hard, a new training program, it's hard…”
Voltaire- “Hah! You were better that time, you actually sounded convincing. I would have believed you, if I were a bumbling idiot!” he stood up, Kai instinctively standing up aswell. Unfortunately, this time his legs let him down and he fell back on the couch. Voltaire walked to Kai and crouched down. He pulled Kai's pants leg up, and examined his calf all the way to his knee. There were bruise marks and slight cuts that to Voltaire looked fresh. He looked at Kai and saw Kai wincing every time he touched his leg. He pulled the pants leg down and released Kai's leg.
Voltaire- “Training, like hell its from training! You're unable to walk properly. Is it this way with your other leg as well?”
Kai could no longer lie, the pain from falling shot through his leg over and over again, tears in his eyes, and all he did was nod slightly. Voltaire only became angrier at Kai's tears. He knew that for Kai to show such weakness it had to be serious.
Voltaire- “Can you walk Kai?”
Kai- “No…I don't think I can, its worse…than before. Its all over…it hurts grandfather…it hurts…” his tears no longer held back.
Tala looked back at Brian who looked really scared, just as much as Tala.
Boris- “That was an interesting stunt `captain Tala', but unfortunately, it was stupid too. This is my abbey Tala, I control everything in here, including the direction in which you run.”
Tala- “What…”
Boris opened a steel door to his right and motioned for Tala and Brian to enter. The guards behind the two boys grabbed hold of them and pushed them into the room. Tala looked around the room, he noticed four chairs, or something like that. They were scientific looking and had a sort of headpiece attachment. Tala then remembered Boris said something about brainwashed when he was talking about Spencer.
`His going to brainwash us' Tala thought before voicing his question,
Tala- “You're going to brainwash us…why?
Boris- “I'm not going to brainwash you two, no, no. I have something even better planned for the two of you.”
Tala- “So why did you say that Spencer was brainwashed?”
Boris- “Unfortunately, Spencer is leaving us. He turns eighteen in three days and so he will be permitted to leave the abbey. We cannot possibly have him sharing our little secrets can we? But you boys are still young, you have quite a bit of time left before you get brainwashed, so no need to be impatient.”
Boris turned around and told one of his goons to prepare the machines. There was a power surge and then an electric buzzing sound coming from the wires that seemed to be connected to the chairs. The guards once again forced Tala and Brian into the seats and strapped them in.
Tala- “What are you…going to do to us?”
At that moment Ian was brought in shouting at the top of his lungs. When he saw Tala and Brian he fell silent. They strapped him in one of the chairs and all of the guards left the room, leaving Boris alone with the boys.
Tala- “Boris, what…”
Boris- “Do you really want to know Tala?”
Tala- “…Y…yes.”
Boris- “I am going to destroy every happy thought you boys ever had, I'll place a fear in you that only exists in fiction stories. None of you will remember any happy times…you will all be my ruthless Blitzkrieg Boys.”
Tala- “Blitzkrieg Boys…”
Boris- “Happy thoughts boys.”
Boris pushed a single button. All of the boys felt as though their minds were being ripped apart, and that was only the beginning of the pain to come.
Kai sat quietly while Petrov wrapped his left ankle tightly in a bandage. His grandfather had had him carried to the medical room where Petrov was waiting.
Voltaire entered the room and his eyes fell on Kai. Kai had stopped crying by now even though the pain, physical and emotional, hadn't gone away. Voltaire sat down on a couch in the relatively large room,
Voltaire- “Are you ready to talk Kai?”
Kai- “Do I have a choice?” he spoke quietly.
Voltaire- “No.”
Kai took a breath before he decided to speak,
Kai- “Boris…he…he uses us as punching bags…most of the time. So we tried to escape, now he…just takes advantage of our weakness, punishes us…unnecessarily.”
Boris was watching Kai intently,
Voltaire- “You're lying to me again.”
Kai looked up at his grandfather in astonishment,
Voltaire- “Why won't you just tell me the truth. I know Boris would never even dare lay a finger on my grandson, he would be too afraid of the penalty. And you, you'd never stand for it. So why do continue to lie to me?”
Kai took this as a blessing, as long as Voltaire thought he was lying he wouldn't go after Boris,
`Tala will be safe…for now…' he thought before playing out the part.
Kai- “I don't know what else to tell you grandfather, what will you believe?” he waited for Voltaire's reaction, and when nothing came he continued.
Kai- “ Thank you Petrov, grandfather, for helping me with my injuries. I have to get back now. The team and myself have training to do.” he stood up as best he could.
Voltaire- “Very well Kai, but you may be sorry that you didn't tell me the truth.”
Voltaire had Kai escorted outside. He stood in the front door watching Kai limp back to the car on his own,
Voltaire- “Kai, I originally intended to ask you if you wanted to leave the abbey and take over Biovolt, working beside me. But seeing as how you're so happy at the abbey, then I guess I should leave you to your bliss. Good bye my grandson, I shall see in two months when I get back into Russia.” he turned and went into the house.
Petrov- “Good bye Master Kai, I look forward to seeing you again. Perhaps in better health.” he gave Kai a friendly smile, which Kai did not return.
Kai nearly choked at his grandfather's words about leaving the abbey. But Kai wasn't sure if he would have left anyway; he wouldn't have abandoned Tala, not ever.
`So it's just as well I guess…' he thought, staring out of the window into the dark night sky. He checked his watch and found it was 5:30 pm. He had been gone all afternoon, now he just wanted to see Tala.
Kai got out of the car, Boris's guards were waiting to take him to Boris. He walked passed them giving them a look that said don't touch me, suprisingly, they didn't touch him. The halls were quiet, which was strange because this was dinnertime; the halls should have been full of children going to the eating hall. Kai looked at his watch, 6:00 exactly. He forgot about it when he entered Boris's office. He didn't like the smile on Boris's face,
Boris- “So I take it all went well?”
Kai- “Yeah, your sick secret is safe.”
Boris- “Good.” He answered a little less happy at Kai's remark
Boris- “You can go now, oh and dinner was early Kai, so I hope you ate.” he smiled again.
Kai- “I'm sure…” he turned and left the room. But when he was out of site he detoured into another passage leading to Tala's room. As he got nearer he could almost feel that something was wrong, and his mind started racing. He stopped in front of Tala's room door, his heart beating hard in his chest.
Kai- * “Tala…” *
He opened the door; he could already feel that all too familiar feeling of himself about to cry. Flashes of Tala's slit wrists flashed in his mind, then he thought of the blood.
He pushed the door open and looked in, he saw the two small couches that were in all of their rooms as you entered, it was quiet and empty. He closed the door and then looked around the room. He looked at the door on the left, which was slightly open, that was the bathroom door, and he could see no one in that room. Then he looked at the door on the right, Tala's bedroom door, and it was closed. He made his way to the door, and this time ignoring his fear, he opened the door.
Tala looked up as his bedroom door opened. He had been sitting on the floor with his back against the side of his bed, he wasn't sure if he had been sleeping. But the thought didn't stay long in his head before he realised it was Kai standing in the doorway.
Kai, his eye's full of tears at the site of Tala on the floor. Tala's ears seemed to have been bleeding and so was his nose. Kai was still thinking of something to say as he got on his knees in front of Tala.
Tala watched Kai through his own teary eye's as Kai got to his knees. Tala felt as though he was ready to scream with all of his pent up aggression.
Kai was about to speak when Tala wrapped his arms around Kai's neck and cried on Kai's shoulder. Tala's entire body shook from his crying, it wasn't loud, but it was a terrible cry. It was a cry of fear and hate, which Kai could feel as he comforted Tala. Tala was saying something to Kai but he couldn't understand Tala.
Kai- “What is it Tala, what happened?”
Tala- “It was hor…horrible. Evil, evil, evil…my head, it hurts. So long…so much K…Kai. Where were you Kai…why…I hate him…hate him so much…” Tala was crying harder every time he said something.
Kai- “I'm so sorry Tala…I was…oh my god…why wasn't I here…I'm sorry…” Kai hugged Tala as though he would be ripped away from Kai at any minute, his own crying almost as hard as Tala.
They cried together that way until Tala fell asleep in Kai's arms, followed shortly after by Kai himself, both boys filled with exhaustion, they slept with the comfort knowing they were both safe, for the moment.
