Beyblade Fan Fiction ❯ Nocturnal habits ❯ You are an extendable asset of the Biovolt Corporation ( Chapter 1 )

[ T - Teen: Not suitable for readers under 13 ]

Okay, hey all of you. This is my new story and I hope that you'll like it. Maybe this was kin of long for a first chapter but I really felt that I had to begin this way.

.......~*~~*~~*~.......

Two tall men wearing gray hoods led her through a stone tunnel. The smell down here was stale; it smelled a bit like old mud. Torches hung on the walls, lightening up the path before them. The flickering light made shadows dance on the walls. To her right were there doors. They seemed to be made of massive wood, they reminded her of the doors to prison cells. She tried to pull away from the men who held her captive, but her attempts were futile. She was weakened and tired. They dragged her with them over to one of the doors. One of the let go of her and stuck one hand inside his robe. He brought forth a key to the lock on the door. With a click, the door swung open. The man grabbed her arm again and hissed into her ear.

“Don't you get any funny ideas now. We are watching you, and the chief isn't very found of troublemakers and shenanigans.” Then the two men threw her inside the cell.

Their door opened and in flew a girl. With a soft thud, she landed on the floor and the door swung shut again. The girl lay motionless on the ground for a moment, but then she got up and looked around. She jumped by the sound of a voice coming from the shadows.

“Welcome to Biovolt.” A boy with red hair and icy blue eyes stepped out of the shadows. “That's your bed behind you, I actually wondered why they put it in here yesterday. Well now I know.” He smiled a bit and held out his hand. “I'm Tala”

The girl just stared at his hand, and then she tilted her head to the side. With the flexibility of a cat, she went backwards over to her bed and sat down.

“My senses must have gotten weak, I didn't realize that you were here,” she said “who's you friend?” She nodded towards the other dark corner. Out of it stepped a slate haired boy. He had blue strikes on his cheeks and cold gray eyes. Tala nodded towards his friend.

“That's Kai,” he said “he's not the talkative type.” The girl got off the bed again with the same fascinating flexibility and picked up the bag the guards had thrown in after her. Then she jumped back to the bad again. She moved as though her feet didn't even touch the floor. She gazed around the stone chamber they were locked inside.

“What is this place?” she asked Tala, ignoring Kai.

“As I said when you arrived, this is the Biovolt Corporation. They produce genetically enhanced beybladers, like us.” He nodded to Kai and himself. The strange girl didn't at all seem to be very upset by these news.

“So you actually live in this dungeon?” Tala nodded.

“Hm, I like it already...” she said. A playful smile graced her lips. The boys noticed that she smiled without showing her teeth. She opened her bag and tore out an old book. The cover seemed to be made of black leather and it had golden letters written over it. She was very thin and her clothes hung like sheets on her. She wore a vermillion red long-sleeved sweater. It was very shaggy now but it had probably been a very beautiful piece of craft when it was new. She also wore a pare of jeans that also looked pretty old.

“So who are you?” asked Tala. She turned her head up and gazed at him. Her hair was something spectacular, long and whiter than snow; it was almost blinding to look at. She had big ocean-blue eyes perfectly framed by long, black lashes. Then, both Tala and Kai could have sworn that they heard her whisper `Depends...' but she never opened her mouth. She just smiled that playful smile with her head tilted to one side.

“I mean your name. What's your name?” Tala told her. In his mind he told himself that he had just imagined the whisper.

“My name is Serenity.” She told them plainly. Then she turned her gaze to the book in her lap again, with one hand she stroke off some dust from it and opened it. It seemed to be written in some strange language that neither Tala nor Kai recognized. She whispered something through her teeth.

“What book is that?” Tala asked the strange Serenity. Her head shot back up again, she seemed to be a bit annoyed and a small hiss escaped her lips. Tala seemed to be taken aback by the girl's reaction. But then the angry expression left her features. She handed the book over towards him.

“It's called `Minu Akasha', here take a look.” Tala reached for it and grabbed the book between his hands. He threw one look at it.

“It's very old, isn't it? And what is it written in?” Serenity just shrugged.

“It's an old language that no one speaks anymore.” Tala's ice blue orbs met her ocean blue ones. He thought that he could sense wisdom in her gaze and maybe something else, something very old.

“But you can read it?” He asked her. She nodded approving. Of course she could read it, it was her book right? Tala handed back the book to her. She took it carefully in her hands and shut it just as gentle. Slowly she placed the book on her one and only pillow. Then she reached down the bag again. While digging in it, she asked them:

“So, how did you guys end up here? I thought that most of your kind tent to keep away from places like this.” Kai briefly wondered what she meant with `your kind'. It seemed to be a very odd thing to say. He could see on Tala's reaction that he'd just thought the same thing.

“I have been here for so long that I can't remember my life before Biovolt, if I ever had one.” Tala answered with a strike of bitterness in his voice. Serenity nodded and turned to Kai.

“How about you then? Can you talk, or did a cat get your tongue?” Kai gave her an emotionless gaze. It seemed like the very soul had left him, he expressed no emotions at all when he answered.

“There are no cats here. My grandfather sent me here when my parents died. He told me that he would come and get me one day, but he never did.” He would have expected to get some sympathy for that comment, but he saw nothing at all in her face. She just stared at him without batting an eyelid. Also Tala seemed to wait for some reaction, but when he realized that there was none, he asked her:

“So why are you here then? It's rather unusual that someone as you and me comes here. Usually they bring kids who are forced to grow up at this... place.” He seemed to have some troubles finding a word that described Biovolt, but when he uttered the word `place' he said it with the deepest disgust in his voice.

“I actually climbed over the gates by myself while searching for something to eat. Some jocks came and tried to pick a fight with me, and a fight they got. Then some nutcase of an old man came and told them to bring me in.” She said and shrugged. This girl didn't seem to have anything against being locked inside this dungeon.

The girl named Serenity lied down in her bed and fell asleep. The two boys sat and observed her. Her left sleeve had slipped up and revealed her naked wrist. She had five long scrapes on it; they looked like marks after nails.

“By the way Kai, was that a joke I heard before? I thought you didn't do jokes?” Tala said to Kai, while he smiled cunning. All he got was an empty gaze from his silent friend.

They awoke the girl when it was time for lunch. Tala went over to her bed and put a hand on her arm and was just about to shake her awake. As swift as lightning, the girl grabbed his shoulder and with a jerk she pulled him down on the bed whilst she got up. With a hiss, she raised one hand ready to strike her opponent. But then she seemed to recognize him. Her tense body softened and she got off of Tala.

“Never disturb a sleeping bear, ever heard of that?? Well the same goes for me, I sleep very light and I don't like being disturbed. I might even harm you before realizing who you are.” She said to him and got off the bed. Tala, who seemed to be in shock, got up after her. She seemed to notice how tense he was. “Hey, sorry about that. It's just an old reflex. Nothing personal.” She said and Tala seemed to relax again.

“It's cool, you just scared me though. Have anyone ever told you how strong you are?” he replied. Serenity just smiled at him and shrugged, she seemed to do that a lot. In her mind she thought that maybe there was some okay people in this world after all.

“Would you like to have lunch with me and Kai?” Tala asked her as they walked up the tunnel towards the dining hall. The torches flickering light made shadows dance in her beautiful eyes.

“Yeah, of course. I don't know anyone else here.”

They arrived in the huge dining hall. The floor was made of solid stone; the walls were also of stone and the ceiling. There were no windows in this region of the enormous complex. Torches and chandeliers enlightened the whole hall. Serenity seemed very enthusiastic when she saw the hall.

“I like this place.” She said. Both Tala and Kai stared at her; no one at their full senses could think that this place was even a bit enjoyable. The whole thing still looked like a huge dungeon, cold, damp and unfriendly.

They lined up to get their food and then they went off to search for a table. Serenity noticed that Kai and Tala didn't seem to be very popular here. Everywhere around them people stared and mumbled. At a table in front of them sat some jocks and ate slowly. The biggest jock seemed to be extra mean and he was clearly up to something. Tala and Kai didn't notice, but she could see it in the jocks eye. She considered warning them, but decided not to. After all, this could get interesting. When Tala walked past the biggest jock he slyly stuck out on foot. Tala caught a sight of it just in time to stay on his feet but he got totally out of balance. The jock saw his chance and kicked the struggling Tala on his ankle. With a high crash, Tala dropped his tray on the stone floor.

“Hey asshole. What do you think you're doing?!” He said irritated. The jock smiled vicious.

“You are a suck-up, and we don't like suck-ups here” The jock grinned. This seemed to infuriate Tala.

“Who do you call a suck-up?” He hissed and punched the jock in the face. A slow expression of surprise mixed with pain appeared in the jocks face. He didn't seem to get that Tala had just dared to punch him. With an angry shout the jock got to his feet. He closed his large hands around Tala's throat. Meanwhile, the jocks slightly smaller friend jumped on Kai and also his tray flew to the floor.

Tala's face began turning red and Serenity realized that the jock would strangle him if no one did something. Also she dropped her tray and ran over to the jock. She locked one of her arms around the jocks thick neck and then she kicked him as hard as she could in the hollow of his knee. With a groan of pain the jock let go of Tala and sunk to his knees. Tala sunk to the floor with his back against the wall, coughing hard. The jock got to his feet again and spun around.

“You are going to regret doing that.” He growled. Serenity just smiled towards him, this was getting rather interesting after all. With a high roar, the jock rushed towards her, he was strong (but not nearly as strong as her) but not very tactic. She just ducked and he missed her totally, bashed into a table and almost fell. He turned around again and before he knew it, she'd kicked him in the face with the flexibility of a cat. Then she swung her right fist and hit him right in the face and the other to his stomach. He crouched and let out a small `Ouf'. Then she placed her knee in his face and as though he didn't weigh anything, she threw him over her shoulder. The hard bang when the jock hit the ground made everyone around them to turn their attention to them. To her right, the jocks friend let go of Kai. Tala stumbled to his feet, still coughing.

“That was awesome. But you shouldn't have done it. They'll punish you.” He burst out. She however seemed to be totally unaffected by the chaos that had just occurred.

“Well you looked like you could need some help, and besides this was the first time since I arrived here that something interesting happened.” Kai and Tala gave her a funny look before all the guards who came running interrupted them.

Fighting was obviously banned here since the guards took all five of them and dragged them away. The got placed in front of a huge door made of iron. It was obvious to Anya that the others had been here before and that it wasn't a good place to be in. they all had scared expressions in their eyes, even though they tried to cover it up. No one succeeded very well, except Kai. He seemed almost as unaffected as she'd seen him this far, but he couldn't fool her. She could smell his fear, and she wondered what waited behind this door.

The door swung open and they were led inside. Before them was a bey-dish and she really didn't understand why everyone was so afraid. One of the guards poked her in the back.

“You, get over there. The chief wants you to play today.” She stepped up to the dish. At the opposite wall were another huge door, but this one was made of wood. It swung open and a boy came out. She'd guess that he was about 14 years old or something like that. He had mid-length black hair, which was pulled back in a small ponytail. A few strikes of hair fell down in his eyes, which were huge and round of fear. They had a beautiful color of turquoise, but why were he so afraid? Then she heard a voice.

“Welcome Serenity to your first match here at Biovolt. You have the great honor to battle young Kentawa here.” Serenity looked around to find the source of the voice, but found none. This was an evil man; she could hear it in his voice. She took a chance and guessed that if she could hear him, he could probably hear her too.

“What makes you think that I would battle him? He's too young and not nearly as strong as I am.” She told the voice. When it answered, the tone had sunken several degrees.

“What makes you think that you have a choice? This isn't a game; you fight for your life. I you lose, you die, get it? And I'm sure that your friends Tala, Kai, Sach (the jock) and Tim (jocks friend) will all get in some serious trouble if you refuse to battle.” She could hear that the man was smirking as the uttered the last words.

“So, shall we start?” The voice said. Serenity nodded, she was used to fighting, she'd fought all her life.

They launched, the poor boy Kentawa looked as though he was about to faint from fear anytime. She still didn't understand why he was so scared. His blading skills were good, but he wasn't nearly as strong as she was. She longed to let her beast out, but she had a strange feeling that if she did, things could maybe get a bit too interesting. So she fought the urge and carried on with the match. This was taking time and she felt that it was time to close this deal.

“Legion, time to finish this. Hammer-bash!” she ordered her blade. It seemed to begin to glow in the dish and then it sped towards young Kentawa's. With a cracking sound, the match was over.

“There you go old man, there you had your match, I won so I get to live and my friends won't get hurt.” She called the voice, but then something happened. Two of the guards walked over to Kentawa and grabbed him by the arms. The poor boy began screaming in a terrified way. The big, wooden door swung open again and they dragged the screaming Kentawa inside the opening.

“Hey, what's going on? Where are they taking him?” Serenity asked the voice, she sensed something disturbing. She ran after the guards to the door but it swung shut before she got there.

“Hey!” she called, banging at the door “What are they going to do with him?!” she turned around and once again scanned the rood for any sign of where the voice came from.

“He lost, you played for your life and he lost. He had his chance and didn't take it, besides he is weak. Biovolt has no use for weak bladers. You are all extendable assets of the Biovolt Corporation, young Kentawa just got extended.”
