Kai was walking down the street. It was almost midnight and the moon was up. It gave him some light, but not much. He didn't feel like sleeping so he walked instead. He was thinking about the future and about his friends, and about the new girl, Anya. There was something so strange about her, he couldn't put his finger on it. When she looked at him, he got the feeling that she knew something about him. Something he didn't want her to know. But maybe it was just a feeling, he could be wrong. He was probably wrong, because how could she possibly know anything about him. They had just met. He didn't think that she was annoying like Tyson, he just felt so uneasy around her. Maybe it was for the fact that she was incredibly beautiful. Not that he cared, no not at all. But you couldn't deny the fact. He was a bit annoyed by the fact that he spent so much time thinking about her.
Â
He walked pass Tyson's house and continued further down the street, not really caring about where he ended up. He was just thinking about the upcoming tournament, when something caught his eye. A movement on the street before him. There was someone there. He saw a someone round the corner and head for the forest. He didn't care about who it was and he was just about to turn and walk the other way when he saw something laying on the ground before his feet. It was a ring, a silver ring. Suddenly he remembered that Anya had a ring just like this one. He saw it during their match today. It had some odd sort of scripture on it. Could it be hers? ”Wait a minute” he thought, hadn't the one rounding the corner been hidden under a cloak? A midnight -blue cloak? Without knowing why, he decided to follow her. Trying to be as quiet as possible, he hurried off after the person. When he gained on it he saw that it was definitely Anya. The person wore a white ankle -length dress. She was headed to the forest and started striding down one of the walking paths. Kai followed slowly behind. Suddenly she broke off and walked right into the thick forest. Kai froze for a while. He didn't feel like chasing after some girl in a forest in the middle of the night, but at the same time he felt like he should follow her. After all, she was new in town and could easily get lost. Making a quick decision, he followed her into the gloomy forest. She was walking so quietly that it was hard for him to know where she really was. It even seemed like she wasn't walking at all, more like drifting.
Â
Fighting his way thought some bushes, Kai cursed under his breath, why the hell were he out here in the middle of the night chasing after some stupid girl who had gone lost, or certainly soon would get lost. He broke through the bushes and froze. She was gone. He looked everywhere, but she wasn't there. He was starting to feel very uneasy when a voice came drifting towards him
Â
”Why are you following me Kai?” He spun around, there was still no one there
Â
”Where are you?” he asked sounding annoyed. He didn't had time for games. He heard a giggle and saw a quick movement behind him. He spun around again
Â
”Answer my question, and maybe I'll feel like revealing myself” her mystique vice said. Kai growled, he was starting to feel irritated. Why had he followed her here in the first place? Now he was stuck in some forest with some girl who felt like playing 'guess the word' or something
Â
”You dropped your ring and I thought I would retrieve it to you. Then I saw you entering the forest and thought that you might get lost. There, now tell me where you are so I can go home again” he commanded. He heard her giggle again. Okay, now he was irritated.
Â
”You would have all the time tomorrow and the day after that to retrieve my ring Kai Hiwatari. Something else drove you out here tonight. Curiosity maybe, or the search for answers. Have you find your answers yet Kai?” she asked him. Her voice sounded distant, but close at the same time. He groaned to himself, she was right. He hated the fact that she was right. He had been thinking about her during his whole walk. He decided to play along, just so he could get out of here as soon as possible
Â
”Okay, maybe you're right. I have one question. Who are you?” he heard a soft sigh. She was quiet for a long time, and then he heard her say
Â
”The question you want answered is complicated. If you would have asked what's the meaning of life, it would have been the same thing. You don't want to know who I am. You want to know where I'm from, if I have a family and stuff like that. I could answer you but you wouldn't understand any of it. And even if I did, it wouldn't answer the question to who I am” Kai growled again. Why couldn't she stop to speak in riddles all the time? It was very tiring. He thought that he would just turn around and go home. But then she said
Â
”Running away from your problems won't solve anything. You don't get the answer to your questions by ignoring them” Kai sneered and replied
Â
”Well I don't seem to get any answers from you either” The playful tone in her voice was gone when she answered.
Â
”You just have to ask the right questions” Kai sighed to himself again. She didn't seem to intend to let him out of here any time soon. He thought for a few moments and then he asked
Â
”Okay, what are you doing here?” She giggled again.
Â
”That, Kai Hiwatari, is the right question. Let's play 'Hide and seek'. If you find me, I'll give you your answer” He heard a rustling sound to his left. He began walking to it while thinking ”Oh great, I'm playing 'Hide and seek' with some strange girl in the middle of the night. Can it get any worse?” And even though, he continued searching for her. His curiosity driving him insane. Why hadn't he got back to his place when he could?
He searched for her for about fifteen minutes without finding anything. Then he stopped, thinking that he had to use his head for this. He looked around him. It could be his own imagination, but he thought that he saw some light far ahead. And when he listened carefully, he thought he could hear the cracking noise from burning wood. Trusting his instincts, he began walking towards the light. Fighting his way trough some more bushes, he stumbled into a glen. In the middle of it burned a roaring fire. Behind it stood Anya, half -way hidden under her cloak.
Â
”Welcome Kai. Sit down and you'll soon get your answer.” She said to him. Kai walked over to a stump and sat down on it. There was something mystical about the way she stood there. He stared at her for a few seconds. Then she began to sing
Â
I became caught in the darkness
I couldn't see any light
Though everything around was on fire
In the light from the flames were my hope and my faith
That whirled away and disappeared
Â
God, give back my strength
give me the power to defend my land
Give me a path,
to stride
I see the sword in the warrior's hand
Â
Do you want me to turn around
And fight, for whom I am
I'll never doubt and betray my land
The winds that will whisper my name
Â
The rain that fell hid my sorrow
And quench my burning thirst
I fled to the mountains when the sunrise came
And suddenly I heard a voice
Â
Â
God, give back my strength
give me the power to defend my land
Give me a path,
to stride
I see the sword in the warrior's hand
Â
Do you want me to turn around
And fight, for whom I am
I'll never doubt and betray my land
The winds that will whisper my name
Â
He song slowly faded away. Then she fell to her knees, and Kai realized she was praying. She mumbled silent. It took him a while to understand what he was hearing. She was mumbling in the same language she had done in his odd dream. She sat that way for several minutes before finally raising her gaze to him
Â
”I guess you've already figured out what I'm doing here?” He nodded
Â
”But I have another question. If you're out hear at night, and with us during the day. When do you sleep? Without blinking she gazed straightly into his eyes (”I think you already know…I don't need to sleep, but sometimes I do it anyway”) He jerked, not sure if he'd really heard something. She smiled. Kai was starting to feel creped out, something was so odd about this girl. Hadn't she just spoken to him without opening her mouth? She closed her eyes and spoke
Â
”Do not fear me Kai. I'm not like everybody else, just like you. But I'm not dangerous and I don't wish to harm you. Maybe I'm the one person in the world who can understand you. Both of us fight to appear strong on the outside, but are equally lost on the inside.”
She burst her eyes open. Kai jerked so violently that he fell of the stump he was sitting on. ”Oh my GOD, her eyes! Look at her EYES!” he screamed inside his head. Kai was not common to fear, but he had never felt so scared in his whole life. Her eyes had changed. The eyes now watching him were black and seemed to burn with a raging furious fire. But then she blinked and her eyes were normal again.
Â
”Kai, what's wrong?” he shuddered by the sound of her voice. It was so soft… then she spoke at him in the strange language again. It was smooth and soft. She rose up and walked towards him. In the light from the fire her eyes seemed to burn with a green flame. She looked fair as a queen. Spellbound by her breathtaking beauty and soft speaking, Kai felt that he was tired. ”She's hypnotizing me” his mind told him but he felt so sleepy he didn't really care about it. He felt so calm and safe under her gaze… and then he fell into the sleeping darkness.
Â
By the boy's side, Anya straightened up and looked around. Now she would have to get Kai out of here. She didn't know where he slept so she couldn't put him in his bed, but she had to get him out of here. He absolutely must not remember any of this in the morning and if he woke up here it could trigger his memory. It was too much of a risk to take. He had seen something in her eyes before she had a chance to put a spell on him. Maybe he'd caught a glimpse of her real form, whatever he'd seen it had obviously horrified him. He said he'd found her ring, good for her, it was an too important ring to lose. She kneeled down and opened his clutching hand, took her ring back and slid it on her finger. She sat there by the boy's side, watching his face. He looked so unhappy and he had a troubled wrinkle between his eyebrows. She put her hand above his heart and felt it pounding fast. He obviously didn't sleep well. Slowly leaning forward, she whispered into his ear
Â
”Sweet dreams Kai Hiwatari. You're safe here tonight. But I'm afraid that that will soon change” By her words, the wrinkle disappeared and his heart seemed to pound slower again. As if he'd finally got some peace from bad dreams and troubles…
