Somebody's Darling Slumbers Here

Summary: Not many girls have ever loved Robert. His standards were too high. Girls were too shallow. But one day, Johnny comes across a mourning Robert…

One-Shot

Johnny wandered aimlessly around the grounds that surrounded Robert's castle. Enrique had given up playing tennis against him and Oliver was busy cooking supper in the kitchens. Johnny sighed. He was bored out of his mind. He was just about to head back to the castle when he heard Robert's voice.

"Ah, my dear, sweet Catherine…"

Johnny stopped short. Who was Catherine?

He stalked slowly towards the direction from which Robert's voice came. The back of his friend's head came into view, and Johnny hid himself behind a tree. He watched his friend, and became aware of the headstone his friend was staring at.

The headstone was tall and made of marble. On top of the headstone there stood a marble statue of an angel holding a harp, its wings spread majestically, its halo made of what looked like solid gold. Robert continued his counsel, unaware he was being watched.

"Three years it has been since circumstances took you away from me." Robert placed his hand upon the inscription of the headstone. From Johnny's distance the inscription was unreadable. "Three long years and I have even longer to wait until we meet again…"

Johnny became uncomfortable as he became aware that his friend was crying. This wasn't the sort of thing someone should come across…

"My sweet, darling Catherine… how I miss you. I miss you every hour, every day… I miss your eyes, your sterling blue eyes, smiling and laughing… I miss your sweet kiss, your warm, soft touch… I miss you so… much…" Robert laid a bouquet of white roses on the grave. Robert spoke as though the girl named Catherine could hear him. "I've bought you white roses. They were your favorite… and to think the last thing I ever said to you was that I hated them…

"That day before you died… we were arguing. I don't even remember what we were arguing about. But the subject of roses came up… and I said 'I hate those white roses you love…'

"Your face… the last time I saw you alive… your face held shock and hurt… and then, that night… on your way to your mother's… your car met with an accident… and I never saw you again. 'Remember her as she was, my son-in-law…' That's what your mother said to me… Catherine!" Robert leaned over as though he were in pain. "Catherine, I'm so sorry! I miss you… I love you… Catherine…" Robert stood up and wiped away his tears. "Forgive me, Catherine. I… I do like roses. White roses are my favorite as well. They're majestic and sweet. Catherine…" Robert stared at the headstone. "I love you Catherine… and I long for day when I can finally tell you that."

Johnny was quiet as Robert walked away from the headstone, the grave that held 'Catherine.' As Robert disappeared between the trees Johnny walked quietly over to the headstone to read the inscription.
