Chapter 1

“Master Rei! You must wake up!” Rei found himself sleeping amongst the flowers in his Country again. Technically it wasn't his country, for he was the prince and not crowned King yet. In a few months maybe, but that was only if he liked this “princess” They were bringing into him. Rei looked over at the person, or shall we say tiger, that was talking to him, Drigger, a long time friend of his family. He was a demon tiger that had green stripes instead of black, the brown eyes were normal, and the crown attached to his head was there too. Drigger had always been there for Rei and was a great friend that would always come first in his life. Rei looked at Drigger and saw that he was sitting normally on the grass as he always had done in the past when Rei would go out for strolls with him.

“Oh, hey Drigger, What's going on?” Drigger sighed, disappointment clear in his expression.

“Your father told me to come and get you master Rei. The Princess that you were talking about is here and has been waiting for you to see her for about an hour now. Your father has kept her from barging into your room. And the elders are after your head!” Rei didn't care about the last comment. He knew the elders were out to kill his father and himself so they could take the crown. Rei didn't mind, he'd be long gone before that'd happen.

Rei got up and dusted his clothes off and along with his hair wrap and started walking back in the way to his castle, Drigger fallowing by his side of course. In Rei's Country everyone had long hair. Black was the main color of his family but there were some that had pink, or green, or brown. But Rei's family was all black. His clothes were those of ancient cloth that his family wore. He mostly wore robes that had tigers on them, considering that his country was the Tiger. There were five countries in total; The Dragon, the Turtle, the Phoenix, the Tiger, and the High Nation. But what stunned most people was the mark placed on his forehead, marking him as a royal heir to the throne of the Tiger Nation.

Rei saw the castle and sighed, he didn't want to go through with this marriage. But there was no other choice. He had to do it to protect his country. By marrying the High Nations princess his nation would be the most powerful. But Rei didn't care for power. He didn't care for his kingdom. He only cared for Drigger, the clothes on his back and himself.

As Rei entered the castle with his stealth like movements only a cat could possess. He saw the elders walking down for their daily walk. Rei knew if he was caught then he would be in big trouble. Rei gathered all the energy he could muster and tried to cast a spell on them. But it wasn't good. Rei was only taught magic by the wizards and sorcerers in the castle. But after his step mother found out he wasn't taught any more. The Elders looked over at Rei who was sitting on the bench near the pool where the little fishes were swimming about suckling at his toes as if they were food. The fat one, Grudja, pointed this fact out to all of the Elders. Rei looked up as he heard them yell to his father saying, “We found him! Your Majesty we found him!” They yelled in their different ranged voices. Rei almost burst out in laughter because of the way they sounded. The all sounded like a bunch of birds fighting over a piece of food. Cawing and scratching.

Rei's father, Ritsu, came into the garden. His father was a wonderful man to look upon. A handsome old man nearing the age of 60, but with a 20 year old face, his long black raven hair, not nearly as long as Rei's, went down to his hips where the belt that held the crest of the nation was his fringe held up by a red bandanna with Yin and Yang on it. Ritsu's eyes were not like Rei's golden feline ones, but were more of a bright navy blue color with a hint of silver in them. Rei knew that his father was blind but he wouldn't admit that to anyone else. His father wasn't a muscular man but was more lean like Rei, still well built but with a feline type of form to them. His fangs rested firmly on the rim of his bottom lip looking as if he was always ready to feast on someone. Which sixty percent of the time he was, but that was just joking of course. Rei's father always had a sense of humor in his voice. He got Rei out of trouble and he was the closest thing he had to a friend, besides Drigger of course.

Rei looked over at the elders; they had very smug looks on their faces that Rei despised. Rei shot his tongue out at them looking smug himself. Ritsu saw this and began to laugh. “What's wrong Rei? Is that all? You usually mock them at this time.” Rei shook his head at his father's statement.

“No father. I think they know what I mean to say. An expression can mean a thousand words. Or in my case ten thousand.” Ritsu fell into uncontrollable laughter.

“Oh yes my boy that hits it right on the nail. Well let's get inside. Princess Mao is waiting to meet you.” Rei rolled his eyes when his father wasn't looking. He fallowed him into the castle, avoiding the elders' glares as he went in.

When Rei was out of sight and in the castle, the elders broke out into a giant frenzy.

“Who does that boy think he is? God?! That boy is getting on my nerves, even if he is the prince I will not have him ruling over me!” Said Daaku, the youngest of the Elders. He looked over at Grudja waiting for his opinion.

“Yes of course,” Grudja Replied in his hard toned voice. “Rei will not be our ruler; we'll just have to get rid of him like we did that other.” He said. The others were laughing with him. “Rei will never see the light of day, and if he does. We'll just kill him all over again.”

>>>> On top of the castle.

“No, I won't allow you to.” Said the figure standing on the top of the castle, he wore black pants that was covered with chain mail and leather belts surrounding the top of them. The black gloves and shirt were flowing in the wind along with the white scarf that covered his neck. The two blue marks placed on his face with the cold crimson eyes that were burning with rage. His sword started pulsing as the man put his hand on it. “Shush, don't worry we'll be out of here after nightfall.” He said as he suddenly disappeared as one of the elders looked up thinking they heard something.

>>>> In the Castle.

Rei sat bored in the dining room waiting for dinner to arrive. Mao, the princess, was talking about her whole life in the High Nation. Rei looked out the window at the sunset that was falling. Rei smiled slightly as he saw it. The sunset reminded him of flames which was very odd. The sunsets always told him what the night would bring.

Rei was snapped out of his wondering mind to eat dinner. What he didn't like he scrapped off his plate while no one was looking and fed it to Drigger. Drigger humbly ate it all seeing as the servants didn't feed him much, afraid of getting eaten. If Rei didn't know better he would have thought them to be birds.

Rei looked over at Mao as she was eating, a light salad keeping her on her diet. `She doesn't need to be anymore skinnier. If she was she'd be a twig. Well there goes yet another person off of my “I want to marry” list.' Rei thought as he stared off into the oblivion. There was a knock on the grand door as one of the servants went to go check it out Rei excused himself from the table and went up to his room, Drigger fallowing closely behind.

“I don't get it Drigger; father doesn't understand anything about me. I wish I could get away from here.” Rei said as he flopped onto his bed. Drigger hopped up and lay down next to his Master that was in need of comfort. Rei stroked his fur in long slow movements, making Drigger purr with each stroke, Making Rei even sadder. “Oh Drigger I wish I had a mate that would stroke me like I do you every night.” Drigger licked Rei's tears away as he buried his head into the white and green silky fur.

Rei snapped into an upright position as he heard the words that would scar him the rest of his life. “We're under attack! The whole Nation is up in flames! Save the Prince!” Rei heard these words and headed out of the room down to where his father was.

“Father, what's going on?!” Rei looked at his father laying on the ground bleeding. “Father!” Rei ran over to him and took his bloody body into his lap.

Ritsu looked up at Rei and smiled a true smile. “Rei my son, I'm glad to see… that you are alive still.” Ritsu said with a slightly shaky voice. Rei's eyes were watering over with tears. “Father you mustn't speak you're getting we-” Rei's sentence was cut off as his father put one shaky finger up to his lip. “Just quiet down my son, I've been living for a long time Rei, and I need you to carry on my life. Rei I want you to have this,” Ritsu said taking off his headband and handing it to Rei. “I want you to get out of here quickly. Don't let anyone see your mark; in these war times we don't want anyone to kill the only one that would save this Nation. Please Rei go… it is my last request.” Ritsu said placing the bandanna in Rei's palm. Rei took it and wrapped it around his forehead covering the mark placed there. Ritsu smiled. “Go into my room and behind the picture you will find my weapon. Drigger will know what to do.” Ritsu closed his eyes and fell into the deep sleep that he'd never awaken from.

Rei stood up and ran out of the room, Drigger saw him and fallowed beside him. “Where are we going Master?” Rei panted as he reached his fathers room

“Father said that there was a weapon hidden behind a picture. Do you know which one it is?” Drigger nodded and went to a small picture of Rei and his mother. Rei moved the picture and saw two gloves in the box. Tigers placed on the middle of them. “Now master we must find the weapon. Fallow me.” Rei looked at him in wonder but fallowed after them to a big picture of the nations. Rei moved it and saw a magnificent sword. He took it down and saw the carvings of tigers. And the emeralds around the hilt.

Rei saw the flames outside of the castle. “Drigger we'll never get out of here.” Drigger jumped into the sword. “Do not worry master, I can sense something coming. We can only hope it will help us.” Rei let out a breath as he waited. He heard scattering coming from the hall knowing that someone was coming to kill him from what they said.

Rei saw them come in and he ran for the window. Not knowing what else to do as the enemy approached. He jumped out of it. “Rei what are you thinking!” Yelled Drigger, “You're going to die!” Rei closed his eyes as he waited for death to fall onto him. Yet nothing happened. Rei opened his eyes to see himself flying. Amazed he felt something grabbing onto him. He looked up and saw with amazement a large red bird carrying him. Rei looked closer and saw it was a phoenix. Elegant feathers flowing along carrying hints of flames on the feathers. Brown almost crimson eyes looked far ahead into the forests. Rei not used to this fainted before he could see the owner that was flying the phoenix.

The rider looked down at the boy his phoenix caught. “Dranzer, pass him up to me.” The large bird nodded and lifted its talons up to its master. “Master Kai who is this boy and why do you want him so much?” Kai smiled and brushed the boy's bangs away from his face. “I don't know girl, I really do not know. But somehow I just feel like he's of importance to me.” Kai noticed the bandanna placed on the boys head. Kai looked at it in wonder and moved his hand to the edge of it. Deciding it was best left alone he forgot it

>>>> Later….

Rei woke up feeling very woozy; he looked up at his surroundings noticing it to be a meadow surrounded by water glazed trees. He looked at the stream running nearby with little pebbles scattered everywhere. Rei looked at everything else around him grass was everywhere except for the patch of dirt in the middle of the clearing that had a nice fire burning. He looked at the flames bringing back the horrible events of the events that went on just a couple of hours ago.

A bird startled Rei as it flew by his face missing him by an inch or two. He noticed that it came back as if trying to attack him but went swooping away passed him again and returning by dropping a dead creature at his feet. It seemed to be a fish that was bleeding severely, Rei moved away from the dead animal in shock and it frightfulness. A low voice from up in the trees startled him as it spoke his words of softness. “I'm terribly sorry. She has very slippery talons.” Rei looked up seeing the owner of the voice.

Tall and muscular with four triangles marked on his face, a wonderfully sculpted body and clothing that looked like a lords, yet suited the man as a ranger, hunter, or a wanderer. Rei studied him and almost looked in awe as he saw the man gently touching the phoenix that was on his right arm, which had a leather glove that he could let the phoenix grip to. He watched as this new friend or foe caressed the feathers with a light touch. And he couldn't help but smile when the phoenix seemed to kiss him back for the nice pet.

Kai happened to catch the prince looking at him and Dranzer, smiling. Kai grinned and let Dranzer fly as he jumped out of the tree and landed next to him. Kai then smiled at the boy who was looking away bashfully and embarrassed. Kai took off the leather glove and gave it to him. “Do you want to carry her?”

Rei looked at him in surprise, he saw a certain glint in his eyes but he couldn't place a finger on it. Rei nodded and placed the glove on his hand. It went half way to his shoulder as he locked the leather strap around the top fastening the glove in place.

Kai whistled for Dranzer to come down from the tree. Dranzer complied with him as she flew down and landed gracefully on Rei's arm. Rei moved slowly to Dranzer to pet her silky red and orange feathers. When Rei petted Dranzer he moved very slowly in his movements as if he were petting Drigger. Dranzer complied and leaned into Rei's touch. When Rei was done Dranzer gave him a few pecks on the nose.

“Master Kai, his touch is much softer than yours is! You should learn a thing or two from him.” Rei jumped slightly as he heard the phoenix talk. Kai saw this and started to chuckle a little bit. “Dranzer you should stop, you're scaring the poor boy. Well now that we've met, I am Kai Hiwatari of the Phoenix Nation, if you haven't figured out yet. What would your name be?”

Rei looked at him stunned, but complied. “My name is Rei Kon. I'm from the Tiger Nation.” Rei looked at Kai in the eyes, golden suns meeting with crimson blood.

“Well then Rei, are you hungry?” Rei nodded and sat down on the grass again. Kai looked at Dranzer and whistled a few times. Dranzer nodded and flew off at light breaking speed.

“What did you tell her to do?” Rei asked in wonder as he looked at Kai in fascination. Kai looked at him confused, “Oh I just told her to catch some food for us to eat. Usually it's just her and I. I didn't expect three mouths to feed.” Rei shook his head in disagreement. “Actually there are four mouths to feed. Drigger come on out.” Rei said to the sword.

Drigger came out and saw Kai sitting next to Rei. He started to growl as he saw Kai sitting there with that evil yet neutral look in his eyes. Dranzer came back and saw Drigger standing there looking at him.

“Master Rei what are you doing with this vermin! Phoenix Nation, You should be more focused on other things. Not dawdling with the enemy.” Rei looked at Kai in wonder. “They're our Enemy?” He said back to Drigger. Kai started to Laugh along with Dranzer who was sitting on his bare arm. Kai forgot that Rei had his glove on his arm instead of the glove on his own until after everyone went to sleep. He looked at everyone and saw that Drigger and Dranzer were sleeping quite well together. Kai smiled and noticed something strange. Rei was sleeping closer to him than his guardian. Kai could easily see ever feature of the boy but what caught his eyes most was the bandanna that made him curious as to what was underneath it. Was skin just there… or was there… something else.

Rei felt eyes upon him as he opened his eyes in a half lidded gaze, noticing that Kai was staring at him. Rei saw Kai look surprised as he began to sit up. Rei went over to Kai and saw his arm was bleeding from what seemed to be puncture wounds. Kai looked at them and saw the blood running down his arm in little rivulets, and caked blood where the puncture wounds were. Kai scolded himself for looking so stupid in front of the younger one. “Do you have any bandages?” Kai shook his head no, and Rei nodded.

Rei tore off some on his robe and went to the stream beckoning Kai to fallow. Kai stood up and went to the river and saw Rei take some water into his little palms, “Give me your arm.” Kai would've come up with a cheesy comment like `But it's attached to me.' But decided not to, Rei was a very formal person and might not have gotten it. Rei took Kai's arm into his palm and began cleaning the wound. Rei cleansed everything going a little further with washing Kai's arm than he meant to. Kai looked at him amazed as the wounds were cleaned and were dried off by Rei's robe. Rei took the cloth that he tore and placed it over the still bleeding wounds. Rei tied it off tightly but not to tight to cut off the circulation.

Rei looked up at Kai's burning eyes, Kai wanted to hug the adorable creature placed before him, but quickly took that from his list of things to do. He didn't want to scare the young one, but then again. No! He'd remain calm, Rei was a beautiful creature yes, but Kai had to make friends with him first. It wasn't fair to scare the boy that he needed to make friends with. Rei was the only living member of the Tiger Nation now as far as he knew.

Rei stood up and helped Kai stand up as well; Kai fallowed Rei back to camp blushing from Rei holding his hand. Kai sat down on the ground and Rei sat down next to him. Rei looked over as Kai was staring at the flames. Rei wondered what the boy was thinking of, but the way that the flames licked and danced their fiery dance of the night. Rei then saw his kingdom being burnt to a crisp. Tears started to well up in Rei's eyes, Rei tried to stop them. He didn't want to cry in front of Kai, it would show him he was a weak person on the inside and out.

“I know how you feel.”

Rei looked at Kai and saw Kai's hand move to the fire but recoiled his hand when he saw Drigger move in his sleep. Rei looked at him, “I was run out of my home town when I was very young. A band of thieves came and killed all the men and children-except me of course- but all of the women were taken away. So I was left alone.”

“But what about Dranzer, I thought that Guardians were only passed down into Royal families.” Kai nodded agreeing with the neko-jin. “Dranzer was the royal family heirloom of the Phoenix nation. But after it was destroyed by a tsunami, I found Dranzer and brought her back to health. And so in debt she stayed with me.” Kai heard a faint liar from Dranzer but Rei didn't catch it. “I believed that it was the Turtle Nation that made the Phoenix live no more. It hasn't been alive and running for almost six years now. So I promised on the sword of Dranzer and the Phoenix Nation I would get revenge on our enemy if takes a lifetime.”

Rei thought of this, “But the Phoenix Nation can't be down. We got Messages from the King and Queen every year. How could it be that the Phoenix Nation is dead when it was the Nation that burned down the Tiger?” Kai looked at Rei baffled. “I'm telling you, I visit the Phoenix Nation every year and the only thing I see is soot and burnt down houses, nothing else, and nobody else.” Rei nodded deciding to give up. Against Kai in a verbal battle Rei came to one conclusion, he could not win Kai was far older than he was and far more talented with using words.

“Alright then Kai, I just want to know a few things about you.” Kai nodded, “Alright then shoot them at me.” Kai responded. Rei sighed and started asking him the questions.

“How old are you?”
“Eighteen.”
“What was your fathers name and what was your mother's name?”
“Daniel and Carlotta Hiwatari.”
“Did you have any siblings?”
“Yes but they died at birth.”
“Where did you find Dranzer's sword?”
“In the remains of the castle where she led me.”
“What's with the scarf? Aren't you hot in it? Or are you hiding something?”
“It is stylish, no I'm not, and Maybe I am depends on what's underneath your bandanna.”
“What if I don't want to tell you?”
“Then I'll force it out of you.”
“And how will you do that.”
“I have my ways.”
“How?”
“Oh tickling, tearing it off from your head.”
“Do you know you're mean?”
“Always have.”

Rei gave up on the questions on Kai he was just being stubborn with his answer. “Now I want to ask you questions.” Rei looked at Kai in wonder, Oh well at least he's opening up to me, Rei thought.

“How old are you?”
“Seventeen.”
“What was your fathers and mothers name?”
“Ritsu and I don't remember my mother.”
“Where did you find Drigger's weapon?”
“In my father's room.”
“Are you of Royal blood?”

“Yes.” Rei said not knowing that it slipped out of his mouth. Kai grinned and sat closer to Rei. “Well thank you for answering my questions your royal highness.” Rei looked stunned, “H-how did you know?” Kai laughed, “You just told me.” Rei groaned and started shaking his head. “I've already let my father down.” Rei looked quite disappointed and Kai felt sorry for him. Kai then sat in front of Rei and placed his hands on Rei's. Rei looked into his eyes that were filled with that strange glint again. Kai removed his hands and cut his palm with a knife out of his pocket. “Your Majesty I promise to serve under you always and to never take back this promise. I promise that you will always be safe, and I promise on the name of my family and my guardian spirit. That I will never ever turn my back on you. That is a promise that I cross my heart to, and if I break it I truly hope to die.” Rei was touched by these words. Kai took his palm and placed it close to his chest.

Dranzer awoke in a furry a little while later, she saw Kai holding his hand close to him but then saw Rei laying his head down on Kai's lap. Dranzer got up carefully and went over to Kai. “Master what did you do to your hand?” Kai smiled. “I made an oath that I promise to keep. Rei is the prince of the Tiger Nation. And he's probably the only survivor.” Dranzer looked at Rei and then at Kai. “He's just like you master.” Dranzer shed a tear and Kai let it fall onto his palm. In an instant his arm was healed from the puncture wounds and the cut on his hand. The cut leaving a little scar to remind him of his duty.

Yes just like me…
