Chapter~3: Make It All Clear
“...Baby dont understand why we cant just hold on to each others hands
this time might be the last I fear unless I make it all too clear
I need you so... can't let you go... noo oh
this time might be the last I fear unless I make it all too clear
I need you so... can't let you go... noo oh
So take these broken wings and learn to fly again
learn to live so free and when we hear the voices sing
the book of love will open up and let us in
learn to live so free and when we hear the voices sing
the book of love will open up and let us in
take these broken wings...”
Notes: Beyblade isn't mine and everyone knows that. Leilani is my only beloning, so, if anyone were to sue me, she would be all that they'd get. The chapter's song “Broken Wings” is by K'Lee, even though I DO want it, as well as “You Wouldn't Know Love” which belongs to Michael Bolton. Read on...
“What are you doing here?!” Tyson rudely asked Leilani the moment she stepped into the hotel room.
“What do you mean?” she asked in a delicate tone as she pulled off her knee-high, black boots at the entrance of the room.
“I mean that Kai went to search for you! And here you are with Ray!” he kept on shouting at her, as desperate as if it had been himself which had missed the encounter.
“That is NOT a funny joke, Tyson,” she said seriously while glaring at him. She felt it was cruel that he took such liberties as to play with her emotions.
“It's true,” answered a brown haired girl as she walked into the living room from one of the bedrooms.
“Really? You aren't saying it just to protect Tyson, right Hillary?” Leilani asked, her anger turning into uncertainty. She paused in mid-task to stare into Hillary's brown eyes, searching for a humorous glint. She didn't find it and all Hillary did was shake her head.
“Do you think that I would waste my time protecting this idiot?” she answered the green-eyed brunette that stood at the door while fuming.
Hillary was known widely for her bad temper and horribly deficient relationship with Tyson. She had once had a crush on Kai, but, then again, who hasn't? And, when Leilani was first introduced to the gang, Hillary hadn't been very docile with her. As a matter of fact, they fought nearly as much as the brown-eyed brunette and Tyson did. But, with the pass of time, they figured it was pointless to loose so much time and energy arguing between each other when they were the only two girls of the bunch. So, instead of quarreling, they became rather close friends. True, they both were almost complete opposites, but they'd put that aside to try to confide in one another. Now, they were almost like sisters. Sure they would always have a small discussion or two, but they always were friends again after a few minutes of silence.
“No. You're right... Wow!... I can't believe he went to search for me...” Leilani said, awestruck by Kai's sudden change of heart. “Why did he go looking for me? And, how much time has it been since he left?” she asked as she slid her feet into her light-blue slippers.
“He was going to make sure that you wouldn't dump him and he left as soon as you did,” Tyson answered, turning indifferent since the matter was none of his business or of his interest anymore.
“Ohhh!” Leilani squealed in adoration at her beloved generally stoic, blunette. “Oh! Oh! I've gotta go find him!” she said, nearly jumping as she turned to run out the door, instead bumping clumsily into Ray.
He had been so silent during the entire conversation that she had thought that he had left or something.
“Leilani, I think it's best if you stay. I mean, what if you miss Kai or he misses you and you both end up wandering all night? He'll probably come here in a while to see if you returned,” the dark haired boy suggested, dry-faced.
He wanted to make sure that Leilani was safe, but if he went with her, it'd seem too obvious what he really was doing. Besides, he wasn't `ecstatic' at the thought of searching for Kai, of all people. But, as Leilani's friend and not her secret admirer, he would support her. And as both friend and admirer, he wanted her to be happy. He just didn't want her wandering the streets aimlessly at these high hours.
“But... but...” Leilani whined in protest. But she truly knew that what Ray had said was possible and most likely to happen. Still, she couldn't help but want to find her cold boyfriend and tell him that he was totally forgotten while kissing his flat expression off his face.
Her desires were stronger than her rationality.
She turned towards her friends, a pleading little pout on her lips and an imploring expression in her eyes, waiting to see their responses to Ray's counseling.
First, she read her best friend's eyes. Hillary wasn't complicated, so she uttered her thoughts out-loud. “You know, Leilani, generally, I'd be with you, but Ray is right. There's a million places where Kai could be right now and, chances are, that you probably won't run into one another and spend the rest of the night searching aimlessly,” the brunette stated while fidgeting with the bottom of her shirt. Her brown eyes were focused on the point in which her fingers were laboriously scrunching and stretching in a monotone.
She knew that surely wasn't what Leilani wanted to hear, but this wasn't really a matter of `wants', it was a matter of rational sense.
Leilani wasn't just going to give up with two votes against her.
She let her green eyes drift over to Tyson.
The blunette sat rather lazily on the couch as he flipped disinterestedly from channel to channel.
A blank vote.
Leilani's green depths scanned the rest of the room, searching for her blond companion. Even though she and Ray were best friends, she also had a special bondage with Max. They'd always be joking around together and, luckily, Kai didn't seem to mind her close relationship with the blond boy.
Although, on the other side, she noticed, Kai seemed to always get grumpy when she was with Ray. She had always supposed that they were friends and, up until a few months, the two boys had no conflicts.
Nowadays, Leilani had sadly noted, Kai had taken a rather hostile attitude towards the long haired boy. She didn't dare question her boyfriend's behavior, but she wondered what might have made him change with Ray.
`Where's Max when I need him?' Leilani thought grumpily after checking as far as her eyesight could take her for the blue-eyed boy.
Finally, she gave up looking for him. He'd been out all day and she supposed he'd probably be sleeping by now.
`I still won't give up, I've got Kenny and Daichi... if I find them...' Leilani thought silently. `Hn. They probably are sleeping too. Damn, awww...' Leilani gave out a defeated sigh.
Even though, if she totally was against what her friends were telling her, she'd generally just leave anyway, she supposed it was better if she DID stay. Just in case...
“Fine. I'll stay and wait for him,” she muttered with an exaggerated pout as she crossed her arms.
She finished walking into the large hotel room, giving Ray space to get in and close the door behind him too.
Leilani still was upset and unsteady that she was just going to hang around waiting for Kai as she sat down next to Tyson.
“Hn,” she stated grimly as she crossed her legs. Tyson's constant channel flipping was getting on her already tensed up nerves.
“Don't start Mrs. Sourpants,” Tyson muttered in response to her grunt. He knew what was coming when she got angry. He swore the fact that she became friends with Hillary didn't benefit him at all...
“Don't call me that,” the black haired brunette said in a threatening tone as she slumped ungraciously against the couch.
She was mad...
`Where the hell is she?' the blunette asked himself as he walked down another aimless street.
He knew he was lost for about two hours so far. He even had considered wondering if he still was at Rome at all.
Not like his masculine pride was going to allow him to ask for directions or anything...
`I think I already passed by this same restaurant like an hour ago,' he thought. He already felt his legs complaining about his dashes down street after street. The heavy, summer air made him sweaty and his skin felt sticky. He hated that. And boots are so NOT the best footwear for summer either.
He could imagine how lawless his generally unruly hair must be by this time.
He couldn't care less at the moment.
Leilani was everything to him. He didn't want to hurt her. He never purposefully did it. It's just that his emotions were so restrained. He knew he expected too much from her by asking her to understand him. She managed really well. A full year...
He spoiled it, he knew. He loved her so much, but she wanted more from him and he could understand. Why couldn't she?
`Because she deserves to know the truth,' a little voice in his head reminded him.
“What time is it?” Leilani asked through bleary eyes and in a shushed whisper.
“It's four A.M.. Why don't you just go to sleep already?” her faithful companion asked from beside her on the couch.
“Because Kai's out there all alone searching for ME, and I'm here watching TV. It feels wrong,” Leilani murmured softly, avoiding to wake the others, which had gone to sleep long before.
Ray had managed to convince her that he'd stay waiting for Kai as she took a bath and he'd been nagging for a while to try to get her to go to sleep.
She accepted the bath, but her room was so far from the main door and she was sure that by the time Kai returned, she would already have fallen asleep. He'd surely think that she was angry after all his work and she'd feel horrible knowing that.
“What if you just sleep here?” Ray suggested, in an attempt of making her rest a bit, she looked so worn out.
“On the couch?” Leilani asked, suddenly rather interested.
“Sure, why not? I mean, it's next to the door, so you'll probably hear Kai when he returns. And if you're too asleep, at least he'll see that you cared enough to wait for him,” Ray said. He wanted to make her happy. It didn't matter anymore if it was at his own cost.
He'd even help Kai if it meant that Leilani would be okay.
“That's a great idea!” Leilani squealed, a merry glint in her green eyes. “You know Ray?” she said, pausing to emphasize her thoughts. “I never do tell you, but I'm so glad you're my friend. You're so sweet and I wish there's something I could do or give you to return all the favors you've made me.”
Ray was left in an emotional shock. His mind focused on the thought of what he wanted her to give or do for him. There was so much. What could he answer her without ruining everything?
“You-“ he cut off when he noticed how hoarse he sounded. He cleared his throat and felt rather uneasy under her persistent gaze. “With seeing you happy, it's more than enough,” he managed, giving himself a mental pat on the back for how steady he'd managed to make his voice.
She smiled warmly at him. He loved that smile so...
She abruptly wrapped her arms around his neck and said in a rasping voice, “thank you so much...”
His mind went blank. What should he do? He knew that if he hugged her back in the same way she was hugging him, then he'd lose control and would ruin everything. But, if he didn't hug her, he'd end up making her upset.
He had to chose between one bad option and the other and hope one ended in a more merciful death than the other...
He didn't want her to feel rejected, so, very carefully, he placed his hands on the highest part of her back.
He was so tense. He hoped with all his might that she didn't notice.
Eventually, he felt her grip falter a bit.
He was going to tell her that everything would be okay and that he'd be with her, but before he could summon the inner strength to word those thoughts, he felt her emit a purring sort of sound.
Slowly and gently, he rejected her, holding the young brunette by her shoulders.
Her eyes had fluttered shut, her coquette, long lashes resting gently against her pink cheeks. Her lips were slightly parted and, though she wasn't snoring, she was making a throaty hum.
Although he couldn't explain why, Ray found that cute. Her head was hanging loosely, dark, stray strands of black hair falling in her face and clinging to her cheeks.
She was gorgeous. And Ray couldn't help but love her.
It was so true to say that hope is the sweetest torture. He had her, but he didn't.
And he was ruthlessly deprived of the one thing he couldn't resist. Her.
Afraid his more masculine impulses might lead things into rather improper behaviors, he lay her gently over the warm, leather couch.
It was warm, still, but, in case, the long haired boy draped a thin silk, cloth over the sleeping beauty.
He left towards the room he was sharing with Max and Kai, pausing at the entrance to give a glance back at Leilani's slumbering figure.
He let out a suppressed sigh. He hadn't a clue what he was going to do with his uncontrollable feelings. He knew he could give her all that she begged Kai for, but he also knew that he wasn't who she wanted. Her heart was dead-set on the blue haired mute. While Ray's was set on her...
A.N.: So, just how badly have I led Ray into being OOC? I like this chapter better than the previous ones and, honestly and humbly, if I do say so myself, the coming chapters are better. It's so nice to have male friends... Anyhow, tell my if I'm way out of it or not at Sapphyre3@hotmail.com!
