The phone rang, pulling Akane out of a sound sleep. The sergeant's voice on the other end was shallow and cold. He ordered her to go to Vienna for a job and she only grunted in reply before hanging the receiver up. Akane looked over at the alarm clock and realized it was only six fifteen. The agency called earlier and earlier anymore. They just couldn't wait until a decent hour of the day. They had grown too depend on her too much over the last hundred years.
She slowly pulled herself into a sitting position, rubbing her neck and letting her eyes adjust to the light coming through the cracks in her mini-blinds. The upcoming shower was good, the coffee even better. Slipping on a pair of jeans and a t-shirt, she skipped the bra. No need when you had eternally perky breasts.
Going back to the mirror, she rubbed ointment on her forehead from a dark brown medicine jar and checked her hair growth. She needed to touch up her roots, but that could wait until tomorrow. It wasn't that bad. As long as the humans couldn't tell her hair was supernaturally white, she would be o.k.
From a second bottle she rubbed another potion onto her skin to give it a nice pink glow. Pale was one thing, but white as a ghost was unacceptable in this day and age. She hated this routine, but it was now an every day part of her life. Only on vacation was she allowed to let it all hang out, but even that sucked. Demon island was a sheltered community and the damned place wasn't even called Demon Island anymore.
At eight Manatsu's alarm clock went off and the younger demon immediately walked down the hall to the bathroom. “Didn't sleep again last night?” his mother called to him and he only nodded. He had been playing Final Fantasy again with Shippo, his best friend and practically brother. When they got into it, they never rested. Akane put the kettle on again, knowing the young men would like fresh coffee too. “You better hurry it up Manatsu, Shippo needs the shower more than you do.”
“That bad Mum?” Shippo yelled from Manatsu's room.
“Yes baby. You stink like fox again.”
“The humans never notice.”
“But I do.” Akane sipped on her cup again, drawing the deep, dark liquid over her tongue.
“Hey Mum, got any pocky?”
“Go get it yourself Shippo. I'm not your grocery store.” Akane slammed the door of the cabinet, putting a box of pocky on the dinning table for him. She knew his soft spot. It was always food. She finished her third cup of coffee and leaned against the counter debating what clothes she wanted to take to Vienna.
A knock came from the apartment door and Akane took her pistol from above the fridge and set it in the back of her pants, the cold steel familiar to her skin. Killing people with demonic power could be difficult to explain, but killing them with a gun was much easier. Sniffing under the door to see who it was, she gave an exhaustive sigh. It was Sesshou.
She opened the door to find him dressed in a button down shirt and jeans, old tennis shoes on his feet. His hair was still white. He refused to dye it, but now it was cropped in a modern style popular with college students. He looked as good as ever, just older. The dog demon looked about twenty six or so, but never a day over thirty.
Same with her.
“Manatsu is in the shower. Shippo's still playing Final Fantasy,” she said dismissively, turning back into her living room and curling up on the end of the couch.
“I didn't come to the see the boys, love. I came to see you.”
Akane rolled her eyes.
“Don't you know what day it is?” he asked, a little excited glimmer in his eye, betraying a deeper plan.
“The day after yesterday?”
“Don't you feel different?”
“No Sesshou,” she said, waving her hand in a little circle in the air. “Your little talk to the old me didn't change anything. I'm still here. I'm still married to Hizumeha. I'm still working to protect humans, and you aren't.”
“I'd protect Kagome if I could.” Sesshou said, plopping on the couch next to her and propping his feet on her coffee table as if he owned the place.
“Feh. And risk changing the past?” Akane looked hard at him over her forth cup of coffee. “I don't think so.” If Kagome meets up with you now and finds out about the past she has yet to experience, things might not turn out as well as they did.
“I know. I know. We've already discussed this.” Sesshoumaru really wanted to help her, as he had all the generations of Rin. Starting with Kagome's grandfather, he had backed off his close guardianship of Rin's descendants. It pained him to do so, but logic dictated otherwise.
“So...” Akane said to change the subject and pulling her feet even deeper underneath her, “I hear you are taking the boys to Ibiza for spring break.”
“Yeah. I thought they might like a little tail.”
“You know Manatsu won't enjoy it. He's such a prude.” Akane thought the whole idea was stupid and childish, but let it go. The boys had to get out of Japan some time.
“I can try.”
“After Shippo almost got that little friend of Kagome's pregnant, they both have sworn to celibacy.”
“Shut up Mum!” Shippo yelled from back in the apartment.
The two older demons looked knowingly to each other. Shippo was still a very precocious young man, a little shy and easily embarrassed. Somethings never changed.
“Hey Dad,” Manatsu said coming out of the bathroom with a towel wrapped around his waist and another being ran over his hair to dry it. The young man looked no more than sixteen, but he was already three hundred some years old and fully grown. His hair was dyed a pretty black and his skin a nice golden tan color from all the creams he carefully applied everywhere. Bright golden eyes blinked below low cut bangs, and Sesshoumaru thought he looked a lot like Inuyasha. The older inu nodded in acknowledgment.
Shippo came and rammed his shoulder into Manatsu's as they passed through the hallway. Boys would be boys. “Hey Sess,” he said with a respectful nod as he opened the door to the bathroom and slipped in for a shower.
“You better hurry up if you are going catch the train,” their mother said. Shippo only grunted in reply. The boys had the job of watching over Kagome at school and making sure nothing happened to her on this side of the well. She never recognized Shippo as an adult and for that Shippo was glad. He got to see her in the classrooms and down the hall and sometimes on the buses and trains. When he had dated her one of her friends he got to see more of her, but then that whole condom breaking thing happened and he had to stop dating the girl. Thank the kami she didn't get pregnant. Shippo wasn't ready to be a father, and he certainly wasn't ready to share the fact that he was a kitsune with anyone.
“When is Hizumeha getting back from Europe?” Sesshou asked, looking back again to Akane.
“Actually, I have to make a run. I will be joining him this afternoon in Vienna.”
“What is it this time? Vampires again?”
“I suppose so,” she answered. “What ever job they give me.”
“When will you stop Akane? When you are lying in a ditch somewhere dying?”
“I remember the first time you asked me that,” she said in a hushed whisper. She rubbed her hands over her pants a little nervously.
“So do I.” He raised an eyebrow accompanied by a huge grin, remembering how he had towered over her that day, inspecting her many demon hunting scars as she was spread out over the bed and touching her sweet, tight...body. Akane leaned forward and pulled the .45 mil out of her pants backside and laid it on the coffee table next to his feet, letting the heavy metal make a nice thud on the wood. He got the hint to change the subject.
She knew him like the back of her hand. All these years they had loved, fought and killed together. They had raised a son, gotten married and divorced a few times. It was only after this last time she had divorced him did he make a serious change for the better. She had tolerated his little jaunts with other people long enough and finally left him. Hooking up with Hizumeha after all these years had been very good for her. Not only did he adore her and give her anything she wanted, he was faithful and dedicated. While he could never match Sesshoumaru in passion, he made up for it by being steady.
Not to mention, the man was hung like a horse, so to speak.
“It's time for you to go, Sesshou. I've got to pack.”
“I know,” the inu said, looking soulfully at the bottom of her gun. Now that he could bring himself to talk to her openly and freely, she didn't want to hear it anymore. Their roles had reversed and while he knew it, she didn't. And if she did, she didn't care. She had become the cold, aloof one. Distant. Silent. Unresponsive.
“You still haven't guessed what day it is.”
“What is it Sess? Humor me.” Akane stared straight ahead, waiting for him to hurry up and leave.
“It's your twenty fifth anniversary to Hizumeha. I just wanted to congratulate you.”
“Oh...thanks,” she said a little surprised that he would be so gracious. She herself had forgotten it. Oops. Did this mean she really didn't notice or care? No. She had remembered it just yesterday. Akane scolded herself inside. She would have to get him a present before getting on the plane. She walked Sesshoumaru to the door, opening it and waiting for him to pass through.
“I love you, Akane,” he whispered to her so the boys would not hear.
Without acknowledging him, she closing the door.
This is the beginning of “The Tale of Akanesuji”, a second fan-fic involving our favorite Inuyasha characters set in modern times. I hope to have it updated every week, much like “The Tale of Sesshoumaru”.
Expect to see some crossovers in this one! Now that there are planes, trains and automobiles, Sesshoumaru and the rest of the gang will have many opportunities to travel.
And for fun, I suggest to everyone to read “The Tale of Genji”, a period epic about an emperor's unrecognized son and his quests for love, power and fulfillment. Even more fun is the movie “Ninja Wars” 1984, with Hiroyuki Sanada (so handsome!!) and Sonny Chiba-- lots of youkai violence and sex.
