Akane trotted into the West End and when she spied an open phone booth in a quiet corner, she stepped inside. Looking though the panels of glass to see if anyone was near, she regained her human like form and picked up the phone. She called Sesshoumaru collect.
“Hey...” she said in a low, cautious tones.
He couldn't believe it was her. She never called him while on a job. “Akane?”
“Yeah.”
“Well this is a pleasant surprise. What can I do for you?”
“I just need someone to talk to.”
Sesshoumaru could tell something was wrong. All those centuries together, he could tell that certain tone in her voice. “What's happened?”
“I need to leave London. Soon. I gotta get out of here.”
“What's happened?”
“Nothing serious. It's just...I need to get out of here.”
“Do you want me to come get you?” he asked quietly.
“No. Are you and the boys having fun?”
“Don't change the subject on me. The boys are fine, but I want to know what is up with you.”
“I...did something. And I'm not proud of it. And I should have stopped it before it went any further, but I didn't.”
“And now you're feeling guilty,” he surmised.
“Yes.”
“Who did you kill?”
“It's who I didn't kill.”
“I don't understand. Who didn't you kill?”
“Never mind, Sess,” she said exhaustively. “This was a bad idea. I shouldn't have called.”
“Hey...don't give up on me just yet. Just tell me what it is you want to say and I'll stop asking questions.”
Silence. “Alright.” Akane ran her fingers over her scalp, and settled to to rubbing the temple opposite the phone receiver. She leaned back against the wall and continued to look out the window panes for signs of people. “I'm in London. I'm on a job. But this job has me paired up with a real psychopath. He's driving me insane. I really...really...want to kill him.”
“Why don't you?”
“If I were you I would have already. But I'm not you...”
“And for that, we are all glad. The earth could not handle two of me.”
“I'm turning into you,” she whispered in confession. “I'm growing cold. I am beginning to hate the world. I want to push it all away. I want to kill it...”
He knew then it was something really bad. Something Akane would not let fade away as time went by. “Let me come get you.”
“No.”
“You need me.”
“I don't need you. I once did. But I don't need you anymore. I've proven to myself that any fool in a white wig will substitute you just fine.”
“I need you Akane. There is no other woman for me. I can't dress someone up and play pretend.”
“You tried.”
“I'm sorry Akane. I really am. I was...”
She cut him off. “I should never have called, but you know what...I am glad I did. Ever since the well, my mind has been really messed up because of you. But right now...I just remembered why I don't love you anymore.” Sesshoumaru heard the phone click and then the dial tone. She had hung up on him.
He did know she was in London. He did know she needed him. If she didn't need him, she wouldn't have called. Sesshoumaru told the boys to behave themselves in Ibiza and took the next speedboat to the mainland. He could run the rest of the way as a ball of light. Who cared if the humans thought they saw UFOs.
The boys would be fine. After all, they were four centuries old.
