Sesshoumaru was propped up on a regular bed with handsome cocoa brown silk sheets and matching brocade comforter. The room was sparsely decorated, but still quite lovely. A single dark mahogany dresser on one side, dark rich wallpaper on every wall. He stood out like a white angel, almost glowing in the artificial light from two brass lamps. Akane noted that he was only wearing silk pajama bottoms, his white feet and claws looking so cute. She hadn't seen them in...a century? Had it really been that long since she left him?

He was quick to cover himself up with the blankets, until it was just his chest showing. It wasn't that he was shy around her, but it just seemed the right thing to do. When he smoothed out the covers, he was astonished when she sat on the edge of the bed close to him and not in the plump burgundy leather chair next to the bed.

“Will you be ready to go soon?” she asked him, rubbing her hand over a blank spot next to her in the bed and looking him intently in the eyes. He was glad to see her hamburger face was healing. The black had faded to a blue and yellow mottle, the cuts well scabbed. She healed so much quicker these days than she did when they first met. Cuts like these used to take six months to fade, and now they would be gone by the end of the month. She still didn't heal as fast as he did.

“Yeah. You left me with some good ones this time.” He pulled the bandage off completely and showed her a new red and pink scarring over. The scabbing had already fallen away and left shiny new skin. “I guess I don't need these anymore.”

“Did they give you blood?”

“No. They couldn't find a the right type. Once I was awake again, the doctors just gave up.”

“No since fixing something that isn't broke.”

“I'm tired Akane,” he said with a heavy heart.

“I'm sure you are. I nearly drained you.”

“No. That's not what I mean. I'm tired of this void between us.”

Akane looked down and studied the paisley pattern on the comforter for a moment. “You were right. I do run away from you. I need to quit running and face my fears.”

Sesshoumaru reached out and put his hand over hers. It was the first time he had touched her intimately in so long...except for that past-Akanesuji kiss thing that had curled his toes and made him light in his shoes. He could swear she was starting to tremble a little, but didn't acknowledge it for her sake. “I guess it helps some when you kick your fear's ass?”

She smiles and almost giggled. “Yeah.” she turned her hand into his and wrapped her fingers between his. “I really got you that time.”

“You should be proud of yourself.”

“I am.”

“I'm proud of you too.”

Akane blushed and stared at their hands wrapped together. It could be so easy to let everything fade away in this moment and run away with him like in the old days, but these weren't the old days, when things were so much simpler. “What are we going to do, Sesshou? I can't seem to forgive you, because deep down inside I still love you, and too, I am married to another man and expecting another child.”

“They managed to inseminate you?”

“Yes.”

“You could give it up. Like you did with the others.”

“You knew?”

“Yes.” He squeezed her hand. “How could I not? I hated you for doing it, but I understood.” He pulled her against his chest, and the smell of her overwhelmed him. “We were so unprepared for Manatsu, and we made so many mistakes.”

She herself took in a deep sniff, letting his odor fill her own nose. It was so comforting and she shivered with warmth. “Yes. We sure did, but I'm not letting this one go. I just have this funny feeling about this one. I don't know why, but I really want to keep it.”

“I'm sure it will be a beautiful wolf-dog hybrid. White hair, blue eyes like Koga. Or maybe black hair and pink eyes.” He put his other hand to her hair and snaked around to find the spot behind her ear, lovingly stroking the blank skin.

“None of that now. You know what that does to me.” Akane didn't want to tell him that it would be something else entirely. No since in letting that cat out of the bag yet.

“Sorry. I forget that you aren't mine.”

“It's alright. Just hold me, o.k?”

Sesshoumaru wrapped his arms around her. “Can you ever forgive me for all the things I did?”

“Someday I will. It still hurts me so bad to think about it. I'll tell myself I have forgiven you, and I do fine for a year or two, and then it all comes crashing back to me. Sometimes I feel like those years were wasted. Stolen from me. They could have been so much better.”

“But Akane, we are near immortal. We have centuries ahead of us. We can make up for lost time.”

“I don't think we can. We can never get Rin back. We can't change what happened with Kagura, or when you left me for that stupid concubine in Tokyo.” Akane felt a tear roll down her cheek. The flood was coming. It was time. “You even did my little sister.”

“I've tried to apologize for those mistakes. You know, at the time I thought I was doing the right thing. Everyone else had lovers and mistresses and concubines.”

“That was no excuse. I stayed faithful to you all those years. I never took a lover, or a mistress or a concubine.” Akane balled her fist up and heard the joints in her knuckles crack. “Why did you always run to someone else?” she finally asked. It was something she had never wanted to know before, afraid of the answer.

“Because when I was with you, you expected so much from me, and I felt I couldn't deliver. You wanted my heart and my soul and a level of communication I just couldn't give. At that time in my life I just wanted someone to hold me and be still. To accept me like I was and not demand explanations from me.”

“You're kidding.” Akane looked up to see his own eyes filled with tears.

“No,” he mumbled. “I didn't understand myself or anything around me. I was so lost, and you were so right about it. I didn't want to find myself at all. I didn't want to confront my fears and there you were, always putting a mirror up to me.”

“I wanted you to love me. To open up and share with me. You never loved me, Sesshoumaru. You never trusted me or respected me enough to just open up and share all of you with me.”

“I loved you. I always loved you.”

“I knew it was true at the well, when the future-you told me.”

“Yes. And I hated the person I saw tell you. I think I made it worse on myself, but I felt it was more important to tell you that I loved you.”

Akane rose up and wiped her cheeks. “If you hadn't told me, would we be here today?”

“I don't know,” he said, touching her arm. “You had to leave me for good. It was my wakeup call.”

“I had to leave you. I couldn't take anymore of it. I just about killed myself over you.”

Sesshoumaru grabbed her up and held her so tight. “I never wanted to hurt you.” He could hear her chest give way to sobs, the sound of muffled cries filled the room. “Oh Akanesuji, I messed up so big.”

“We both did.”

They cried together for a time, her smaller framed locked in his. When he pulled away to look at her, she tried to hide her face. Carefully he held her cheek and turned her towards him. With extreme care he kissed her damaged lips. “I love you, so much Akane.”

“I love you too.” She wiped her face yet again and tried to steady herself. “But I am Hizumeha's wife now, and I have a baby to think about. I'm not yours.”

Sesshoumaru would not allow that. She may not be his now, but he hoped to make her his once again. “The truth is, Akane. You belong to no one. I saw you in that room. You were wild and free. Only Sieobo has hold of you.” he could see her tense up, her spine straightening and her face over come with the shocking truth of it. He touched her hair and played with a loose strand. “No one owns you. Of all people, Hezumeha never will. He is just borrowing you because you let him.”

“I belong to my children.”

“Only because Sieobo is Mother Goddess of the West. She loves her children, and expects you to love your children too. If she were a Goddess of war, she would not allow you such luxuries.”

“The Kami are fickle and unpredictable,” she added, as if it were some kind of excuse to get out of it.

“But also everlasting and steady.” Sesshoumaru sat up straighter and leaned closer to her. “If there is one thing that you have taught me over the years, is that faith and hope are the key to our long term survival. So many of us give up because the years wear us down. But you... you always find something to hope for. I've watched you pray and give offerings. Even when you have done something utterly disgusting, you lay yourself at Sieobo's feet like her lap dog. You sit at the door, waiting for your true master to come home and pat you on the head and reward you.”

“You make me sound like a common dog.”

“We are dogs, Akane! When did you forget that you were a dog?”

“I've never forgotten I'm a dog.” she pointed to herself and then him. “You were the one who tried to be more than their true nature.”

Sesshoumaru sighed. She was right once again. “Father was ever the perfect samurai, and InuYasha was such the perfect pup. Then there was me. Trying to be the perfect something.”

“You are perfect,” she said, smiling and cuddling back into his arms. “Your name means “perfect destruction. You are the most intelligent, beautiful and deadly inuyoukai in the world. You are perfect at what you do.”

“What are we going to do, Akane?” he asked her then, wanting to ignore her flattery. He didn't feel very perfect now that she had kicked his ass. Things would have been different if he had brought a sword, and they both knew it, but even still. She had out witted him with patience, knowing he was faster, stronger and better. “The ball is in your court.”

“I play ball really badly.”

“I meant that as a figure of speech.”

“I know. But it's true. I hate giving up the ball. I suppose I should run with it. See what it's like to be my own person.” Akane scratched her head and plastered her bangs down over her forehead like she often did when she was thinking hard. “I have so much to consider, Sess. This week has been so monumental. I mean...two weeks ago I knew everything. I knew what I was doing with my life, where I was going. But ever since the well, everything has turned upside down...and I don't know up from down.”

“It's adventurous isn't it?” he asked her, watching her eyes sparkle like they once did.

Akane nodded, then got off the bed. She walked to the door and turned to him. “You better get dressed. We have a plane to catch,” she said with an adventurous grin. It would have been down right sexy if her face hadn't looked like death warmed over. She slipped out, not allowing him even a moment to reply.

The inuyoukai groaned. He didn't need her help getting dressed, but it could have been fun. His old Akane was back, and he smiled to himself. She didn't seem to hate him anymore. She was at least talking to him now. Things were going good. In fact, things were going great. Maybe in a decade or so, he'd get her back into his bed.

Yep. He had something to live for. Something to look forward to. Something to have faith and hope in.

Alucard and Integra watched the whole scene unfold on a hidden video feed. “She's pregnant?” the blond asked the black haired man next to her. “I didn't see that happen on the security tape.”

He purposefully ignored her. “Future-Sesshoumaru?” the black haired man asked the blond. “She knows the secret to time travel too?”

“Quick...What is she thinking?” Integra ordered Alucard.

He focused and there were a hundred images of flying. A two headed dragon in the air, a giant yellow and black burning cat surrounded by clouds carrying a bunch of people, an image of a RAF bi-plane, and she herself jumping through the air as a humongous dog with a what looked like a sword in her mouth. When she had told Walter two stories, she had meant every last foot of it. She was huge. The song this time was “Magic Carpet Ride,” by Steppenwolf. Alucard was amused with himself, he was finally getting the hang of her brain.

“Well, you don't now what we can find. Why don't you come with me little girl, on a magic carpet ride,” he said, trying not to break out in song. It was a song with a good beat and it would be all too easy to hum along.

“I don't get it.” Integra confessed.

“I do. She's going on another adventure. She's got the ball, and she's running with it.”
