Chapter 6 - The Awakening (Part 2 - Use me, use me, please don't abuse me)
Ulquiorra was just attending to his usual duties.
That included observing the human world, reporting the status of it, and the status of the Arrancar development and training. And his most important duty, was attending to the human, Inoue Orihime.
Today had been just another routine day for him. It was nearing the evening and he had to give the human her food for the evening. As he was walking to her room with servants in tow, he felt a strong spiritual pressure among him.
“Who could that be?” he asked to himself. The reiatsu didn't feel like that of an Arrancar or a Shinigami. It felt familiar, strangely human, but something else also. He then recognized this reiatsu as the one of Inoue Orihime, and picked up his pace to her room.
`How strange' he thought, `she hasn't displayed a reiatsu this strong since coming here, still she is no threat to Aizen-sama or the Espada, I can easily calm her down.'
He thought this before he opened her door.
Suddenly a reiatsu stronger than he could imagine came pouring out into the hall. The servants immediately passed out due to it. Even for him it was getting harder to breathe as he stepped into the room. He saw her; Orihime was floating above her bed a black aura surrounding her and she gradually turned her blank eyes toward him. Slowly she placed herself on the ground and whispered one word. “Die.”
A beam of streaking white light came from nowhere and sliced Ulquiorra deep in his shoulder.
The attack came so fast that he did not have time to react.
“What was that??” he said, his voice still steady and calm. He had been standing there looking at Inoue and the next he felt a sharp pain in his right shoulder. Did it come from her? Couldn't have, she was not strong enough to even pierce his steel skin yet alone strike him without him noticing.
Then suddenly something happened that caused his eyes to widen with shock and astonishment.
She was absorbing the spirit particles around her. The walls, the bed, the furniture started to dissipate. That black aura that she had around her started to swell and as it touched Ulquiorra he felt it burn him and suck almost have of his reiatsu right from him.
“H-how can that be?!?” he said stuttering in shock “how did she acquire this power where did it come fr-” he didn't get to finish his sentence before he was butchered from her attack.
She started walking and simply walked over his disemboweled body.
It took the rest of the evening and well into the night to finally stop her.
They didn't really stop her; the black aura around her started to turn white and like a blackout the blinding light that surrounded her suddenly vanished and she passed out.
When she was done there were many casualties and even a greater number of those who were deeply wounded and on the verge of death. A few of the Espada, including Ulquiorra had to go into immediate surgery to keep them alive and even Gin and Tousen got a few scratches in the process of stopping her.
Aizen called an immediate meeting with the Espada that could make it.
“Well gentlemen and lady, it seems that we have a situation on our hands.” Aizen said in his suave voice.
“We just need to kill her, do away with that nuisance!!” one of them called out “she doesn't belong here in the first place!!”
“She would make a good research project” Zaelporro said indifferently.
“A good specimen to research yes, but killing her is not an option. Don't be rash now; we definitely need to keep her on our side now. You did see that power did you not?” Aizen said looking at the Espada who said that. “She restores and she has this incredible power, she could be a very useful asset if properly trained to use that power of hers. Don't worry she will not turn against us, for I know she will not, and that power does not even compare to my own.”
“Now, since we are done, you may all do as you please, you are dismissed” he said with a sincere smile on his face.
He walked hurriedly down to her room and forcefully pushed the door open making a loud clank sound as it hit the wall behind it.
She was sound asleep looking like an angel, looking like some one who never could have killed so many Arrancar and injured some of the Espada.
He looked down at her with a menacing look, his long slender body towering over the bed. Noitora looked down at her, looking at her with pure hatred and jealousy.
`Why?? Who is she and why is she so important to Aizen-sama??' he thought `it makes no sense; a silly little girl like her and Aizen praises her power!!! She's nothing, she's insignificant scum; why does Aizen recognize someone like her with no power and ignores me??'
Noitora hated that Aizen had been stuck on this girl, how he brought a human, a mere human into Hueco Mundo, she was nothing; she just had a pretty face and big breasts.
Noitora loathed her from the second she stepped into this world. He swore that he would make her life here hell.
“Heh, at least your pretty, so I might play around with you a bit, ok Ori-chan?!” he said leering over her.
She awoke lying on the ground in her inner world, but this time it was not as she last saw it. The rain had stopped but that only made the bleakness of the land more apparent. The birds lay dead over the ground, no where in sight did she see a single piece of living grass; the strawberry trees lay on their side's, the strawberries rotted on the ground. The beautiful stream that had passed through had evaporated and was no longer. The once radiant sky was grey with lightening streaking over it; the clouds threatening to unleash their fury over the land once again.
“Ah, I see you have come back, Orihime,” a voice said in the distance. It was the same man as before, the one who was talking to the hollow.
“Who are…who are you?” she said sitting up and clutching her hands against her chest.
“Tsk, silly woman do you not recognize me?? After all that time of helping you fight, you baka.” He said, an annoyed tone in his voice.
Her eyes widened as he neared, she recognized his voice. “T-tsubaki??” she said softly.
“You stupid girl how could you not recognize me before??” he said, bending down and flicking her on the forehead, “you're a real idiot ya know??”
She looked up at him and then down at the ground, “I know, I'm the biggest idiot of them all,” she said in a melancholy tone.
He stood up straight and felt kind of bad for what he said, then looked off in the distance and said, “Orihime do you know why you're here??”
She looked up at him with her wide eyes then closed them answering with a no.
“It's because you subconsciously called out to me for me to help you with your powers” he said seriously. “When the other one choked you what she was really doing was releasing the limits off your mind to release my power; in other words she was breaking down the barrier that you put up to keep some of my powers locked away. In the real world you went on a rampage and killed a lot of the Arrancar and even seriously injured some of the Espada” he said looking down at her once again. “I am here to help you use my power.”
Limits, release, barriers…what was he talking about?? Orihime looked up at him with a confused look on her face.
He looked at her and sighed. She really didn't understand after all, it was going to take a while to explain things to her in a way she could understand.
“Alright, I'll explain in terms you can understand” he said scratching his head. “When you acquired this power of yours you subconsciously put barriers on my power, which essentially means that you blocked more than half of my power.” He said while squatting down on the ground. “You probably did this because of your hatred of battle and you didn't want anyone to get hurt; even when you went on that rampage you still managed to hold some of my power back.”
Finally understanding what he was saying, she asked “so…how are you going to teach me how to use your power??”
A grin spread across his face as he stood up and said, “First I must explain the full extent of my powers”
“But Tsubaki I already know what you can do, you create a barrier and reject everything on both sides cutting the opponent like a sword.” She said a little too quickly.
“Tch, listen woman, that is only a part of my power” an annoyed tone returning to his voice. “I also have powers that you do not yet know about. I couldn't show you the full extent of my power because you had it blocked off.” He paused for a moment then continued.
“When I reject everything on either side of me I cut it like a sword, but I cut it completely in half. I'll give you an example.” He looked around and saw a marred tree lying on its side. He grinned and whispered, “Perfect.” A white light surround him and he bound off going for the tree and went through it. A second later a white light shot in opposite directions slicing the tree in half and cutting everything in half for about a mile's radius. In an instant he was back in front of Orihime and coolly said, “And I wasn't even trying.”
Orihime just looked at him in complete utter shock. That was her power?? How?? She couldn't even beat a second-rate Shinigami let alone almost kill an Espada, yet she had.
Suddenly Ichigo's face came into her memory. `Inoue, I swear I'll protect you!' She had wanted for so long to be able to handle things on her own, to not have Ichigo come and save her every time she was in trouble, she had wanted for so long to be able to stand on her own, and not look back to ask Ichigo for help, and now that opportunity was being handed to her on a silver platter.
She knew what she had to do.
With a determined look on her she stood up and looked Tsubaki directly in the eye. “Teach me how to use you please!” she said bowing to him.
He just grinned and just said, “Now that's more like it woman. You just have to defeat me in battle” he said, throwing a katana at her. She fumbled with it for a second and looked at him with a confused look on her face.
He unexpectedly appeared in front of her and said, “listen woman, I will not go easy on you nor will I give you the time to adjust, you have to use that inner power that you have to win.”
He then took the initiative and stabbed her in the stomach with his hand.
She doubled over in pain and looked up helplessly at Tsubaki. She knew she was in for one hell of a battle.
She had been fighting. Fighting for what seem like hours; hours stacked on top of hours, compounding, compressing on top of each other. Another hour went by just added a notch to the many notches of how long she had been fighting.
She was panting, trying hard to catch her breath to no avail. She was cut up all over; her legs looked like a badger went to town, her arms covered in blood, and the hole in her abdomen drenched her whole outfit crimson red. She held her katana so tight that her knuckles had gone long past white and her hands started to bleed.
“Tired, Orihime??” He said taunting her, “well maybe you should take a rest!!” He lunged at her and she blocked his attack with the aged katana. His attacks were starting to crack the sword to where it would no longer be useful if these relentless attacks continued.
She was getting better at dodging his attacks but she was at her limit. Her legs were trembling under her weight; her reactions were dulled and slow her vision unfocused. She could not continue on much longer without passing out or being killed by her own power,
“Seems you can no longer go on anymore woman” Tsubaki said indifferently. “I will end this right now.”
She held her sword up once again, preparing for his attack. In a spilt second he was in front of her face and he broke her sword with his attack leaving her completely defenseless and sliced his razor sharp hand deeply into her shoulder.
Blood spats hitting the cold hard ground could be heard. The clanking of the spilt sword resounded everywhere in the land. She swayed but managed to stay on her feet. The clouds held their anger long enough and the rain came down once again in analogous sheets.
`Damn it all, damn it all, damn it all!!' she thought, cursing at herself. She had failed once again, once again she needed to be protected, and once again she couldn't do it by herself. `If Kurosaki-kun was here he could have saved me, he could of…NO!!' she thought to herself `Why?!? Why do I always depend on him?? Why can't I do it on my own, why can't I do it by myself?? Why am I so weak??!' she started to cry then remembered something Rukia said before she was kidnapped. `In battles, it is not the ones that have no power get in the way; it is the ones that have no resolve.'
Resolve. `What is my resolve??' she thought. `I don't want to be a burden to anyone, not to Urahara-san, Kuchiki-san, Ishida-kun, Sado-kun, Abarai-san, and especially not to Kurosaki-kun. I…I want to be useful, I want to be needed,' she thought. “I want to fight!! I want to be more powerful than I am!!” she shouted aloud.
Suddenly, a white aura appeared around her, she had a determined look on her face; she had found her resolve. “Tsubaki!!” she shouted, “Koten Zanshun!!”
Out of her hairpins came the true Tsubaki. He quickly shot through the other Tsubaki with lighting speed. The after shock of the attack even cut the rain; the white power could be seen for miles.
“Well done Orihime,” Tsubaki said in a satisfied tone. “You have finally learned how to control my true power. You still have much room to improve for there are other forms of my power that are even greater than what you just saw. Orihime, get stronger you will need this power in the near future.” He said finally disappearing into nothingness.
Orihime was still panting heavily; Tsubaki returned to her hairpin and her vision became more unfocused. Her legs gave out and she saw the desolate landscape revolving around her as she passed out.
A pair of black eyes appeared in the distance, along with an ominous smile. “Yes Hime get stronger for one day that strong power will belong to me!” the cackling voice said.
`Almost morning,' she thought.
How long had she been thinking about this power? It must have been hours. She looked down at her bandaged hand and sighed once more.
In a few hours she would be about doing her duties once again. She didn't have to get up until then but the thought of going back to sleep made her get out of her bed and head right for the shower.
