Chapter 6: Family

Uryu had never felt so nervous in all of his life. While he’d always respected Toshiro for his intelligence and skills as a fighter-there was a reason why the white-haired male was a taicho- he now knew why others were uncomfortable around him. Being the sole focus of the teal eyes was very disconcerting.

Toshiro sat on the couch in front watching him, evaluating him. Five minutes earlier, Uryu came to the Kurosaki residence to talk to the prodigy about his sister.

“Hitsugaya-taicho, I would like permission to date Momo.” It was best to stick with formalities right now. Uryu was asking because for one thing it would mean a lot to Momo; secondly, it would show the prodigy that he was serious.

Toshiro evaluated the Quincy. The dark-haired male was nothing like Aizen physically or mentally. While it was true the Quincy could be merciless when dealing with enemies, he treated them with respect even after their defeat. There were times Ishida could be quite remote but he was protective of his friends and would never leave them behind. He genuinely cared for those he considered his friends. Ishida would never treat Momo like a plaything and would never intentionally harm her to further his own goals. He would protect and care for her and Orihime. “Will this be an equal relationship between the three of you?”

Uryu nodded, “Yes. There is no point in being in a relationship if it isn’t equal.”

Toshiro nodded, “She is a Fukutaicho.”

Slowly Uryu felt his tense muscles relax. Toshiro wouldn’t be making a statement like that if he was against the relationship. “I know and understand that it will be difficult.” The prodigy knew all about the difficulties of being in a relationship with a living person and was just watching out for his sister. “However, I believe that it can work.” Conversations with the prodigy were always interesting because the two of them were similar in some ways.

Toshiro sighed, “You have my permission to date Momo, but be warned that if you hurt her you will answer to me.”

“I would expect nothing else, Hitsugaya-taicho. I promise to protect her.”

The prodigy sighed as soon as Ishida left, sinking back onto the couch ignoring the sting of scratches. He ached a lot.

“I’m surprised you let him off so easily.” Ichigo commented walking into the room. Frankly he had expected Toshiro to threaten Uryu with castration at the very least. His kitten looked a little uncomfortable: an after effect of spending the night with Hichigo. The strawberry’s own back was covered with two nights worth of scratch marks.

Toshiro snorted, “He’s an honorable guy and shares no resemblance with that asshole.”

Ichigo wondered if Uryu knew just how much Toshiro trusted him to not hurt Momo. He made a mental note to make sure the Quincy knew. However, right now Ichigo was more concerned with his lover’s opinion of Hichigo. They hadn’t had a chance to talk about the previous night yet and Ichigo could feel the hollow’s restlessness at not knowing.

As if he was thinking the same thing, Toshiro pushed his body off the couch and headed upstairs with Ichigo following behind. Once in the bedroom both males made themselves comfortable on the bed facing each other. Ichigo waited patiently for his kitten to speak.

“If that baka thinks I regret last night then let him out so I can kick his ass.”

Caught off guard, Ichigo blinked before busting out laughing. Trust Toshiro to get right down to it. Eventually his laughter died down to chuckles. “I’m glad to hear you say that. He was a little worried.” He tried not to wince at the loud shout of joy that rang through his head.

“Stupid hollow,” muttered Toshiro. “If I hadn’t wanted it, I would have kicked his ass instead of letting him sleep with me.”

Ichigo leaned forwards to place a chaste kiss on the prodigy’s forehead. He was truly lucky to have the prodigy as his. Not many people would, or even could, have accepted their significant other as a visored. Toshiro, however, accepted both him and his hollow. He had a feeling that Hichigo would be coming out more often, but Ichigo really didn’t mind seeing that Toshiro was one of the few who treated the hollow as a person and not a thing.

Toshiro rolled his eyes at the affectionate gesture; the strawberry could be one of the biggest saps around. He meant every word he said: if Hichigo really thought he regretted it then he definitely needed his ass kicked. Of course, if the hollow continued to call him hime then he would be in for a world of hurt.
A white eyebrow rose when he saw the soft smile on the strawberry’s face. Sometime during the night, he had awakened to find that Hichigo was still out. Even more surprising to the prodigy was the tight, possessive hold Hichigo had on him. The fact that the hollow had stayed out just to hold him settled the insecurities the soul reaper in him had as well as the fear that Hichigo was just using him to get laid.

“You’re amazing.” Ichigo suddenly said jerking Toshiro away from his thoughts. Toshiro decided not to comment on the random words knowing that they pertained to his acceptance of Hichigo.

“I hate to ruin the sappy, cavity inducing moment, but HIDE ME!!” Kon yelled as he jumped in between them bouncing on the bed. He scowled when the two males just looked at him in surprise. “What are you looking at?”

Ichigo started snickering. “What happened to you?” The mod soul was dressed in a wedding dress complete with veil.
Kon glowered at the strawberry, “That spawn of Satan you call a sister decided that I was lonely and needed a husband to keep me company. That was after she put me in the washer and dryer.” The sound of laughter made him look behind him in shock. He’d never heard the Taicho laugh only chuckle a few times. Kon turned back to Ichigo who looked almost as surprised as he was.

Ichigo couldn’t believe his ears. His kitten was laughing, not chuckling, but actually laughing. He looked back down at Kon to see that the mod soul was totally shocked.

Knock. Knock.

Ichigo got up to open his door revealing Yuzu on the other side. “Have you seen my stuffed lion? He’s disappeared again and we haven’t performed the wedding ceremony yet.”

Toshiro smirked because the mod soul dove under the bed to hide from the girl. Ichigo decided to take pity on Kon since he could hear the mod soul whimpering in fear. “Why would I know where your toy went? Have you checked outside?”

“No, I haven’t. How on earth does that lion keep disappearing like he does?” Yuzu frowned as she walked down the hall.

As soon as he shut the door, Kon poked his head out from underneath the bed. “Is it safe to come out? Has the spawn of Satan left?”

Ichigo shook his head, “Yeah, she’s gone.” The mod soul fully crawled out from his hiding spot. The sudden sound of steps coming near sent Kon scurrying back under the bed, causing Ichigo to laugh and Toshiro to chuckle. Ichigo would never understand the relationship between his sister and the lion.

A sudden beeping turned both of them serious in seconds. Toshiro’s soul pager, which lay on the desk, was going off and they were the closest to the location it indicated. The orange-haired teen made sure his door was relocked and turned to find Toshiro already out of his gigai. Not feeling like putting up with Kon’s complaints, Ichigo grabbed his substitute soul reaper badge using it to leave his body. Within seconds they were out the window moving towards the hollow which they could hear even from a far.

Upon arriving at the indicated location, there was no hollow in sight yet even Ichigo could tell something wasn’t right about the area. Looking around he spotted a child’s soul in the shadows of a nearby building. He turned to Toshiro with the intent of asking if the prodigy could sense anything when he saw an arrancar appear behind the Taicho. In his head he could hear Hichigo demanding to be let out to kill the arrancar because it reached out to caress the Taicho, who for some reason didn’t move away. From the look on Toshiro’s face, Ichigo realized that he couldn’t move away. The damn hollow had somehow put a binding spell on him.

“What a pretty little creature you are.” The arrancar purred. The look on Toshiro’s face promised death once he got loose. “I think I’ll get rid of the other guy, so I can have plenty of play time with you.” The hollow then leaned forward with the obvious intention of kissing his captive.

Ichigo saw red, without thinking about what he was doing he let some of Hichigo’s power leak out. Both of them were enraged at the gall of this hollow for touching their Toshiro.

One minute Toshiro found himself unable to move and being molested by the arrancar. He felt reiatsu from both Ichigo and Hichigo flare up violently. Next thing he knew, the arrancar was staring in shock as he disintegrated from a black crescent wave of reiatsu. The binding spell broke as soon as the arrancar died returning his ability to move. The prodigy turned his head to look at Ichigo and was slightly surprised to see one of his lover’s eyes was black and gold while the other was the normal warm brown. Something prompted him to move till he stood in front of his lover. “Are you all right?”

The strawberry chuckled weakly; his voice had an echo to it. “I should be asking you that.”

Toshiro smiled softly, not a sight the majority of people who knew him saw. “Baka, of course I’m all right. The two of you killed him before he could do anything to me.” Suddenly he scowled. “You could’ve at least found a way to break the binding spell so that I could kill him myself. I don’t have to be protected.”

This time the chuckle was stronger. “I know, but you can’t blame me. You’re mine.” The eyes were serious yet soft at the same time.

Toshiro snorted. “Possessive, baka strawberry. Possessive, baka hollow. Just remember that it works both ways. You two are mine.”

Ichigo closed his eyes chuckling, when he reopened them they were completely back to normal. His voice was back to normal too. “I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

“Shiro!!”

“Toshiro! Ichigo!”

The two males turned to see Momo and Orihime running towards them with worried looks on their faces.

Orihime was the first to reach them. “We felt an arrancar, and then we felt Ichigo’s reiatsu, followed by an unusual reiatsu. Are you two all right?”

Toshiro noted that Momo was giving Ichigo an odd look as he answered for the both of them. “We’re fine; it was just a lone arrancar.”

Orihime looked to Ichigo who said, “Like he said, it was just one arrancar who was easy to beat. Nothing to worry about.”

Once the redhead was satisfied that they really were fine she headed home. Momo turned to follow her but stopped when Toshiro called her back. She waited for him as he told Ichigo to go on ahead home; he would follow in a few minutes. As soon as they were alone Momo asked, “He’s not a normal substitute soul reaper is he?”

Toshiro observed her carefully before answering. “No, he isn’t.”

The dark haired girl wasn’t sure how to ask her next question. Her brother was a very private person, who rarely talked to anyone about anything.

“If you’re thinking he’s a threat to the Soul Society, then you’re wrong,” Toshiro said.

“It’s not the Soul Society I’m worried about,” Momo replied. “It’s you I’m worried about. For a minute his reiatsu felt similar to a hollow’s reiatsu.” She didn’t want him to be hurt, especially by the one he loved.

“Hichigo and I would rather kill ourselves than hurt Toshiro.”

Toshiro frowned because he hadn’t sensed Ichigo’s reiatsu. Must be because I’ve gotten so used to it. Ichigo stood only a few feet away having made no noise when he moved. Is he really admitting to another soul reaper that he’s a visored? As far as he knew there were only a handful of people who knew about Hichigo and they knew only because Ichigo had been forced to reveal his other half to them. Ichigo wasn’t ashamed of being a visored; however, he felt that it wasn’t anyone’s business. He knew Hichigo wouldn’t harm anyone unless provoked. Toshiro glanced at Momo to see her frowning as she thought about the strawberry’s words. Eventually she looked up at Ichigo and asked, “Do you promise not to hurt him?” Toshiro was touched that she cared so much about him.

For the second time that day, one of Ichigo’s eyes turned black and gold and his voice had that odd echo to it signifying that they were both talking, “We do. He’s everything to us.” His eye and voice changed back as quickly as they changed the first time.

Momo smiled, “As long as you both promise to love and protect him, then I have no reason to be concerned. I’m glad Shiro’s finally found two people to care for him.”

“I’m standing right here, you know.” Toshiro gritted out of clenched teeth. Neither Momo nor Ichigo paid him any attention.

“Thank you.” Ichigo smiled in relief. He knew that Momo’s approval meant a lot to his lover and it meant a lot to him as well as Hichigo. He wanted her to accept him because they were family now. “You better go or Orihime will think something’s happened to you and call the entire gang in a panic looking for you.”

Momo giggled because she could definitely see the redhead doing something like that. She waved at the two males before heading towards Orihime’s apartment with relief in her heart. She truly wasn’t worried about her brother because of the sincerity in Ichigo and Hichigo’s words.

The two males headed home where they got back in their bodies and resumed their positions on the bed from earlier. Even though the sun was just now setting they were both tired. Toshiro was happy. Momo gave her approval of his relationship which meant a lot. He gazed at Ichigo who lay with his eyes closed. He knew it had to have been hard to tell someone, especially Momo, that he was a visored. “Thank you.” The prodigy didn’t realize he’d spoken until the words were already out of his mouth. “You didn’t have to do that, you know.”

Ichigo’s eyes opened and he smiled softly. “Yes, I did. She cares for you and is important to you. Besides we’re family now.” His eyes widened slightly in surprise when Toshiro leaned forward suddenly to kiss him gently. He returned the kiss with all he felt behind it.
Toshiro pulled back far enough and long enough to say, “I love you, and I love Hichigo.” before kissing him again. A huge smile split Ichigo’s face as he pulled back to say those same three words, “We love you.”

Momo got halfway to the apartment when she came upon Orihime waiting for her. The redhead smiled before she asked, “Is everything o.k.?”

The dark haired girl replied with a sweet smile, “Yes, it is.” Orihime held out a hand which Momo took and together they walked towards the apartment where Uryu was now waiting for them. They ignored the odd looks they received from the people they passed. Those looks didn’t matter.

I never had a reason to worry, Momo thought.
