He sighed as he was latched onto by the girl from his visions; a twitch came to the left corner of his lips as his arms wound about her frame to hold her loosely.
He shivered just slightly at the feel of her body curving into his own rather perfectly, “I'll protect you, Chiharu-chan.” He said, kissing her lightly upon the temple as he pushed her from his grasp slightly.
A small smile was shown on his lips as he looked around the place, this era was so different, everything was beautiful outside of the torn up area littered with bodies of fallen comrades he couldn't save.
He moved his arms from her waistline, noticing they were still there, turning his head and looking at her slightly as they walked down a narrow pathway through the woods; he cursed as he almost ran face first into a tree, but started laughing as she giggled, this all felt right to him.
“Chiharu-chan, were you so afraid to die, that…your ghost called to me?” he asked, seating himself down onto a good sized rock near the familiar yet so distant bed of the river. His eyes catching the slight glimmer of the crystallized sand and water, making his own aquamarine eyes dance.
A soft breeze picked up around them and caused his hair to stir slightly, and he heard her muffle a yawn as she sat down on the ground with her back to the rock he was seated upon.
“Everyone's scared to die, Hitsugaya-kun…My heart called out for a reason to live, and…” she looked up slightly, a sad smile on her face and a deep sadness in her forest green eyes, “sometimes love can transcend even vast amounts of time, and bring together the most amazing of relationships…that can outlast even the gods.”
He continued watching the water run along its smooth crystallized sand bedding, his fingers tapping lightly against the rock in a soft tune, his mother had always sung him to sleep with it; he listened to her finish speaking and heard her clear her throat, apparently she knew the tune also and began to softly hum with it.
Once the tune was over, he repeated it, slightly louder this time; and she began to sing. “Dancing bears, painted wings, things I almost remember. And a song, someone sings…once upon a December. Someone holds me safe and warm. Horses prance through a silver storm, figures dancing gracefully across my memory. Someone holds me safe and warm. Horses prance through a silver storm; figures dancing gracefully, across my memory. Far away, long ago, glowing dim as an ember. Things my heart used to know, things it yearns to remember. And a song, someone sings…once upon a December.”
He stopped the tapping of his fingers, looking down at her questioningly, knowing full-well that his confusion was written all over his face.
“My friend used to sing this, all the time” she said softly, and his eyes watched her slump where she sat. He watched her arms cross over her bent knees, and her burying her face into her folded arms, as if hiding from some sort of disgracefulness.
He hated that look, utterly disliked it, he wanted to smack her for doing it; it made him feel useless, and he hated that even more. But as she looked up at him, she smiled, sadly. “Arigato, Hitsugaya-kun” she said softly and almost under her breath, he could tell she was listening for any signs of movement, and she was graced with a source of some.
A very young Shunsui came out of the wood-line and to their vicinity, and Hitsugaya wanted to take the girl up into his arms and run…he knew the terrors an older Shunsui inflicted upon women, but a younger one?
He was graced with his worst fear, Shunsui slid an arm about Chiharu's waist as he sat down beside of her, “Chiharu, my dear, what were you doing out in that ruckus, you could've gotten yourself hurt. You should've just come to my room, as I suggested” it took all the resolve Hitsugaya could muster to not knock Shunsui into the next millennium.
“You could thank me, for saving her and your comrades lives” Hitsugaya piped up, sending a cold stare toward the young version of Shunsui.
“Ah, so you're the one responsible for saving them? That's one mighty Zanpakuto you've got there, ice/water type, aye?” Shunsui asked, lifting his head up slightly to watch Hitsugaya.
“Aye…it is,” Hitsugaya started to say but held off the rest of his comment as a younger Ukitake ran toward them, “Chiharu-chan, are you all right?!” Ukitake panted out as he pulled the girl from the grasp of Shunsui and spun her around in his own grasp to check her for injuries, and he opted to making some up, though they weren't terribly bad.
As Hitsugaya was beginning to stir on the rock, he watched Ukitake walk Chiharu away; the girl protesting all the while.
