Unexpected

Sakura gaped at Kero. She wasn't even sure if she'd heard him right. She couldn't have.

“What?” She repeated for the third time, her mouth barely working.

“You heard me,” Kero repeated. He really didn't like the idea of it, but it was true. It did explain quite a lot, such as the magic that ran in the Kinomoto family. For such a young girl to have had enough power to recapture the Clow Cards and then to change them into her own type of magical cards…

It was very rare, even among magical families. Clow himself had studied since he was old enough to read and write. The Li Clan prided themselves on their methods of teaching magic. It caused their students to acquire much of the magical knowledge they would need in a short amount of time. It was something they kept secret from everyone, even the non-magical members of their family.

…Yes, this definitely explained a lot about the Kinomoto magic. But would've guessed? Kero certainly had no clue until Eriol's most recent visit, when he had pointed out a strange mark in Sakura's magic circle. She had used the SLEEP card to help her father sleep after a long, hard, stressing day at work. Kero, worried, had gone to Yue and told him about it. Yue presented him with a theory, which Kero denied. The two had ended up researching it anyway.

It was terrifying, but true. Now that he had informed Sakura, all they had to do now was study her magic circle and figure out exactly which one it was. Perhaps it still existed. If it did, all they would have to do was trace it with the symbol from the circle. Sakura didn't have that power, but Yue did.

Kero looked back up at Sakura and explained it. She was shocked. She fell to her knees. She was scared.

“Waaaaa! Monsters!” She squealed.

“Demons,” Kero corrected. She grabbed Kero and hugged him close. She was definitely scared, he decided.

“Okay,” Kero said.

“FREEZE!” Sakura exclaimed, activating the card. Her magic circle froze and she remained still as Kero. Yue quickly moved in to examine it. He swiftly sketched a rough copy of it in one of Sakura's notepads. Kero stared long and hard at it, memorizing it, trying to recognize it, to figure out what it was.

Tomoyo stood out of the way, watching. She was relieved that Sakura had somewhat calmed herself since she had informed her of what was going on. It was scary in a way, but she knew Sakura well. It certainly didn't show through in her personality.

Tomoyo snapped out of her thoughts as the circle disappeared and Sakura's sealing rod changed back into the key. She gave Sakura a reassuring smile as the two guardians studied Yue's sketch and conversed in whispers.

Sakura sat down on her bed and Tomoyo sat next to her. She held her hand in a “don't-worry-you'll-be-fine” gesture. Sakura seemed tired. Tomoyo couldn't blame her. Her whole life had been changed by the discouraging information she'd learned only a few hours ago.

“Well,” Kero said, breaking the silence, “We think we may be able to find information on this `ancestral grandparent' of Sakura's.” He, too, seemed tired. “Or at least decipher what kind it is.” He didn't mention the kind of what they were looking for.

It was a long week of searching in the public library and the internet for Kero. Sakura and Tomoyo both knew that. They had, between themselves, made a promise to make as many sweets as they could after this was solved. He would appreciate that.

It was during lunch, on the third day that Yukito had been absent from school, that Kero flew straight into Sakura's lunch box. Yue landed silently in a tree above them. They were in a secluded part of the school, outside eating their lunch in the shade of a tree.

“Hey!” Sakura exclaimed angrily as Kero began eating her lunch. She snatched away an onigiri he had reached for. He went on to another piece of food. “Kero-chan!”

“As… soon as I finish… we'll go, okay?” Kero said between mouthfuls. He took another bite of rice.

“Go where?” Tomoyo asked, her lunch abandoned.

“We've found him,” Yue said from above them. Sakura froze. She looked up at Yue with fearful eyes.

“Y-you found him? My ancestral grandparent…?” Sakura asked, gathering her courage.

“Ancestral grandfather,” Kero corrected. “From a thousand years ago, to be exact.”

“Is he still alive?” Sakura asked, hopeful. Maybe she wouldn't have to deal with demons.

“Yes, alive and kicking,” Kero commented with a burp. There wasn't a crumb left. He started on Tomoyo's.

Sakura became visibly worried. “Is he mean?”

“From his reputation, I would say he's downright evil!” Kero said cheerfully. “Other demons are scared of him!”

“A-and we're going to go visit him?” Sakura half whimpered.

“Yep,” Kero said, polishing off the rest of Tomoyo's lunch. He patted his stomach. “I think you can miss the second half of school to meet him. Ready to go?”

Swallowing her fear, Sakura cleaned up. They followed Yue, who seemed to have a lock on this “grandfather's” energy pattern.

Sakura and Tomoyo rode on Kero's back. He was in his larger form. They seemed be flying for at least an hour when they landed between two supply shed's behind a high school in Tokyo.

The two girls climbed off of Kero and he changed back into his smaller form.

He stretched. “Good thing Tokyo is so close. I don't think I could've stood flying for much longer!” He stated. “We're taking the bus back.”

“Why are we at a school?” Tomoyo asked as Yue folded his wings carefully in the small space.

“He's a student here,” Yue answered calmly.

The bell for lunch rang and students flooded out onto the grounds. Sakura, who was a little calmer now that she knew her demonic ancestral grandfather could fit in with humans, asked, “Which one is he?”

“Yue?” Kero asked, looking at the moon guardian.

After a moment of silence, Yue said, “Follow me.” He turned around and began walking toward a large, green tree they could see over the roofs of the sheds.

“Won't we be seen?” Tomoyo asked.

“No one will see us behind these sheds,” Kero said.

Suddenly, Yue stopped just short of emerging from between to two buildings. There was no room for anyone to squeeze past him, or even see past him. The tree seemed to be only a few yards away now.

“Yue-san…?” Sakura questioned uncertainly. She quickly quieted at the sound of a voice.

“Who are you and what do you want?” The voice was calm, soft, and deadly. There was authority in the voice. Whoever had spoke, they knew power very well.

Yue took two steps forward and moved to the side of the opening between sheds. Kero flew out and floated on the other side, Tomoyo following.

Sakura emerged into the bright light and shielded her eyes. She moved toward Tomoyo and out of the sun's rays. She looked up to meet startled eyes.

“Children…?” The soft voice murmured, no longer holding its deadly tone.

Sakura stared in amazement at the beautiful creature leaning up against the tree. “Yue-san…?” She asked, looking for an affirmative.

“This is him,” Yue said calmly.

The long red hair, the slender body, the forest green eyes… He couldn't possibly be a demon. Sakura looked back at Yue, then to the creature.

“Are you… my grandfather?” Sakura asked the creature. He tilted his head slightly in confusion, but his eyes remained locked on her, examining her.

After a long, awkward silence, the creature gave a small comment, “Your energy pattern…”

Sakura visibly gulped and repeated, “Are you my grandfather?”

The creature stood up straight and walked toward her. “Who are you?” He asked.

“Kinomoto Sakura,” Sakura replied as he lifted her face to his.
He looked deeply into her eyes, concentrating on something. “The human woman… A long time ago…”

He straightened, looking unnerved. “She gave birth?”

Sakura spoke up, asking again in a bold voice, “Are you my ancestral grandfather?”

“I believe, after having a good look at your energy pattern,” he said, and paused, fingering a strand of her hair, “And your physical attributes, too, I'd say so.”

He smiled, kneeling down so they were even, “You look a lot like Hisoka Kiko.”

“So he really is her ancestral grandfather?” Kero asked to no one in particular, “The one that helped the Kinomoto magic grow so strong?”

“Yes,” was the answer that came from Yue. “It's obvious when you compare their energy patterns.”

“So… this is Sakura-chan's grandfather,” Tomoyo stated. She looked at him and smiled. “I like him. He's not a scary demon, after all! Right, Sakura-chan?”

Sakura smiled. “What's your name, Grandfather?” She asked.

“Kurama,” he answered, smiling. He didn't seem too adjusted to the idea of a granddaughter, but he was accepting it.

Well, Kurama thought, this was certainly unexpected.
