“I love you!” Sakura yelled as she leapt into Syaoran's arms. For too short of a time, the pair embraced, and it was the happiest moment of Syaoran's life. Sakura was the first to pull away, but only to grab his hand with a wide smile stretching across her face from ear to ear.
“Let's go find the others!” She dragged him down the stairwell faster than she ever thought she could move. The entire time, Syaoran could not keep his eyes off of her.
It did not take long for them to find Tomoyo and Meilin. Tomoyo was weeping at the sight of Sakura, unhurt and happy, while Meilin tackled Syaoran and nearly through him to the ground. “I knew you could do it, Sakura!” Tomoyo's eyes sparkled.
“I'm so happy to see both of you safe.” Sakura said. Tomoyo continued to cry. After she was calmed down, the four friends set off to find their loved ones. Meilin and Tomoyo were back to old business in no time.
“We noticed you two were holding hands as you exited the tower.” Meilin said slyly. She paused for dramatic effect, as was expected from a girl like her.
“We're guessing she gave you an answer?” Tomoyo said hopefully. Sakura was busy with Kero and Yukito to notice the conversation. Syaoran was in such a state that he didn't even blush. To him, nothing about the subject was embarrassing anymore.
“Yes,” he said dreamily. “She loves me.” All the while, he watched Sakura with a sweet smile and adoring eyes. He repeated to himself again: She loves me.
Syaoran remembered that night and felt like crying. He was lying in bed, in Hong Kong… smelly, awful, depressing, and evil Hong Kong. It was his home, but he couldn't stand it. It felt so empty… and he knew why, but refused to think so. He stretched, took a deep sigh and got up.
Although he didn't want to, the memories made him think about her… how she laughed and smiled, how she always made things right. She had taught him more about himself and life than any professor could. He pressed his hands to his forehead, scolding himself.
I bet she has moved on by now. Why can't I?
Because, I'm still in love with her.
No, that can't be it…it's been so long…
Do you really think time makes a difference?
I bet she barely remembers me.
I'm such a fool. Syaoran laughed at himself. He was arguing with no one. She was such a happy person, that nothing could keep her sad for too long.
“I bet she's happy.” Syaoran assured himself out loud.
“Kinomoto, Sakura.” The teacher announced.
“Hai.” Sakura raised her hand and gave a small smile. She was sixteen, and had grown into a young woman. Her father told her that she looked more like her mother than she could ever possibly know.
“Daidouji, Tomoyo.”
“Hai.” Sakura's best friend, a young girl with long ivory hair and stunning amethyst eyes, sat next to Sakura. They had been best friends for as long as they could remember, and were second cousins. Sakura thought Tomoyo was beautiful, and so did many young male suitors. Tomoyo was the best friend anyone could ask for: loving, compassionate, dedicated.
“Okay. Settle down.” The middle-aged woman droned. “My name is Mrs. Takegawa. I will be substituting for your other teacher.” Barely anyone was listening. “I would also like to introduce a new student. He just came into this school after years of home schooling. Please say hello to Hirohito Kanagawa.” The class mumbled their hellos.
The boy was average height, with dark hair that was rather short. He would have been a bit unnoticeable if it wasn't for the scar that was only visible when he turned his head. It looked as if someone had sliced him on the right side of his face, from his ear to just before the middle of his cheek. It wasn't a large scar, but it was easy to spot. Sakura found it a bit unnerving, but other than that, Hirohito seemed to be quite friendly. His intimidating feature was toned down by his unnaturally large smile.
“Mr. Kanagawa, you can sit in the seat behind Miss…” the teacher took a look at the seating chart. “Kinomoto. Yes, that will be fine. Miss, would you please raise your hand for Mr. Kanagawa.” Sakura raised her hand gingerly, and Tomoyo looked concerned. No one had ever sat behind Sakura, even after years.
Sakura had moved on in some ways… she was able to be happy, and had a healthy social life. Her grades were still good, safe for math of course; and she did not think about Syaoran every day like she used to. But there were some things that never changed.
Sakura could never date. After Syaoran, no one was good enough. They were too serious, too goofy, or too “friend-like”. Many boys had been denied Sakura. At first it was a game: who could get the girl first. But soon they all just gave up, and she was labeled undateable. Sakura didn't mind since she was never bothered. And she never felt right with anyone else.
And one other thing was that Sakura always made sure that she would have an open seat behind her. Although Sakura never knew why this was, Tomoyo said it was because if someone else were there they would be replacing Syaoran. And although Tomoyo never told Sakura, she also thought it was because Sakura was still hoping one day Syaoran would come back.
“Good morning.” Syaoran said politely. His mother nodded back.
“Ohaiyo, little brother!” His sisters all replied. And straight after that, all of them paid no attention to Syaoran and instead talked about meaningless things. They all thought Syaoran was too serious. He thought they were far too bubbly.
He ate his breakfast silently, as there was nothing to talk about. He finished right after his mother, and left his sisters to their ridiculous rants about shoes.
Almost right out the door, his mother called him to her room.
“Syaoran-kun.” His mother said. “I have been thinking about your future, and think it is necessary we find you a fiancé.” Syaoran's eyes went big.
“What?!” He blurted out. He immediately regained his professionalism. “Is it not too early to be thinking about such things?” He hated talking so “civilized” but it was required around his strict family.
“You are about to be seventeen. I think it is about time.” The look on her face said differently: we will find you one, and you will be grateful. So that's it then, I guess in a week or two my family will assure my life.
“I have singled out one girl, she is beautiful and comes from a good family. She lives in Japan. We will leave in a few days.” She solemnly continued.
Did not see that coming… a few days? Why did she keep this from me for so long? Syaoran bowed and left the room. He was completely shocked. Later that night, Syaoran was approached by two of his sisters.
“Mother said that we were going to Japan! I wonder why…?” Syaoran looked at them, and told them the devastating news.
“I—I'm… meeting my… fiancé.” The news finally struck him like an axe onto his brain. But then he thought about what his mother said again… and realized. Japan? Sakura's face flashed before his eyes.
