Tomoyo rubbed her eyes softly. She rubbed her hands together, finding little warmth. She quickly scanned the scenery, looking for any clue to what time it was. She soon saw the milkman drifting at the doors of homes, exchanging bottles of milk.
"Oh, gosh! I'm going to be late!" Tomoyo muttered angrily. She changed from her threadbare nightgown into her usual outfit-consisting of a plain black, too big, dress and a dirty apron.
She raced out of her cold and damp room, and bumped into the Headmistress.
"Watch where you're going, brat!" Headmistress Bishop snarled. "Get out of that… and change into this," she ordered, holding out a clean and brisk maids' dress. "You will be working in Miss Kinomoto's room, only because she requested you. Now get, you ungrateful Jap!"
Tomoyo bobbed a small curtsy, and rushed to her attic room. Maybe there is hope, she thought, but can I trust her? Or is she cruel just like Headmistress Bishop?
Tomoyo shook off all her feelings. She shrugged into the maids' dress, which fit snugly. She was, once again, feeling warmer. It was the best clothes she had worn for some time. Quickly, she picked up her pace.
Tomoyo reported to the door of Sakura Kinomoto.
The door opened suddenly. "Oh, I've been waiting for you, Tomoyo!" Sakura greeted, with bursting energy.
"Uh… Hello…" Tomoyo began uncertainly and nervously. "I will be at your every wish…"
"Oh, the reason I wanted you to come was… We can converse in Japanese together. Don't you miss our native land?" Sakura pondered quietly, in a mysterious and elegant way.
"Well…" Tomoyo felt heartache. She did miss Japan… its traditional tea, the sakura festival, her mother… everything.
"Oh, 'tis so wrong of me!" Sakura exclaimed at once. "Would you like some tea, and some muffins?" she asked in good manner. "You are my guest. I insist upon it." Sakura dragged Tomoyo to her feet, to the small coffee table, seating Tomoyo down on a soft chair. "Here…" Sakura poured a cup of tea, with complete grace. "Tell me about yourself."
"There is not much to tell… I am a servant, and you are my superior," Tomoyo replied with simplicity. She had been taught to keep silent, and say that.
Sakura looked rather hurt. "Well…" she began slowly. Then she switched to Japanese. "I have an older brother," she quickly spoke. "He's Touya. He promised me that every Sunday, I can get out of this… wretched place. You must agree. I don't like Headmistress Bishop very much. Do you?"
Tomoyo gave a small smile. "No…" she answered, in her native language. It felt good to speak in her native tongue, once again.
"I hope we can become good friends…" Sakura's bright eyes were brimming with hope, as she patted Tomoyo's hand. "Do you have any family?"
Tomoyo felt quite hesitant. "I don't have family," she finally said. "My home is here…"
Sakura felt a pang of pity for Tomoyo, but it went away. She could remember that pity wasn't going to do any good… just like when her mother had died…
~flashback~
"Oh… poor thing… she lost her mother…" a young lady murmured.
Sakura pouted. She didn't need sympathy. All she wanted was… everything to be normal.
"Did you hear? If poor Nadeshiko hadn't married so early… she probably would have had a life, and would be living happily right now…" another lady said defiantly.
Sakura was angered by these harsh words. She guessed that people were relieved and happy for the death, but sympathized those who were affected by it.
~end of flashback~
"Oh… Look on the bright side… you have a home… and a new friend," Sakura slowly countered.
A new friend? Tomoyo thought. I don't have friends. It's just to cover everything up! But then… why is she smiling just so, like she really means it? "Yes… a new friend…" Tomoyo confirmed with a hesitant side.
*
Headmistress Bishop sighed. Her new student, Sakura, was so… baffling.
"She's just like Sonomi…" she muttered. She undid her thick bun, of thin, bland, and dull black hair. "Is Sonomi trying to haunt me? On purpose?" she snorted.
She could still remember. Sonomi. Tomoyo. Tomoyo was a replica.
~flashback~
Young Sonomi eagerly played the flute, with grace. She gave a sweeping curtsy, full of grace and charm.
There was applause. "Oh, that Sonomi is an angel!"
Rumiko sighed. It was always Sonomi this, Sonomi that. It was never Rumiko.
Rumiko had plain and dull black hair. She had a plain, average face. Her personality was short-tempered, prideful, and full of jealousy. She was too tall, with lanky legs. She was clumsy, and didn't have the charm.
Sonomi had glossy black hair, in a simple form. However, the simplicity made her more charmful than Rumiko… the extravagant Rumiko. Sonomi had a sweet and simple face. She was full of grace, elegance, and charm. She wasn't a living beauty, but she had a simple and sweet charm about her.
"Oh, Rumiko… Do you think I did well?" Sonomi asked.
"You did terribly!" Rumiko remarked hatefully.
"I'm sorry I didn't satisfy your taste…" Sonomi merely remarked.
~end of flashback~
"Sonomi was pitiful," Rumiko finally remarked. But Sonomi was the charm-so beautiful in the simple form.
There was a knock at the door.
"Come in…" Rumiko Bishop answered.
The door creaked open, to a charming figure of Kinomoto Sakura. "May I please… take Tomoyo Daidouji with me to send this letter? And visit my brethren? On the morrow, Sunday?" she asked boldly, with a simple and clear voice.
No, Rumiko decided, Tomoyo is only half of Sonomi. This Sakura girl… she is more like dumb Sonomi in her personality… although her appearance is different. "Yes… you may," Rumiko nodded with approval. She had to please Sakura, and if this pleased the young Kinomoto… she could do it.
"Thank you," Sakura murmured, with a small curtsy, and she left. She quickly stepped into her warm and cozy room. She would have to hurry in writing the letter. "Oh, Tomoyo! Good news! We can both send the letter… and then we will visit my brother. You will like my brother. He likes to tease, but… he cares, too…" informed Sakura.
Tomoyo nodded. She was becoming more comfortable with Sakura's company, and enjoyed the bright and cheery personality in life. Maybe, Tomoyo thought, there is good in life…
"Dear father…" Sakura scratched onto her sheet of paper. "Are you faring well at the archaeological find? When will I see you again? I have met many new friends…" she drawled.
Soon, it was dark. "We must stop, if we want to be up bright an early," Sakura decided. "Could you sing?"
Tomoyo was taken aback by the question.
"Would you please sing?" Sakura asked sweetly.
It was a request. Tomoyo wasn't being forced into things. "I'll sing…" Tomoyo agreed. She liked Sakura. Sakura gave her a new perspective to life… And soon, Tomoyo sang a soft song in Japanese… her angelic voice rang out into the soft and dim night… across the midnight sky, glittering with stars… into the cool night.
"You sing wonderfully," Sakura complimented. "Well… good night. We must sleep to awaken early enough…"
And soon, all you could hear in the room… was the soft breaths of night, and a swaying gentle breeze.
OK… I think I already have my character thing decided!!!!!! YAH!!!!!!! So, I already have figured out what Syaoran will be, and what Erioll is going to be… It's a little different from what I had planned in the beginning… oh well! But review!!!! This is going to be an E+T and S+S!!!!!!! YAH!
