Chapter 1
(OK, so I've decided to continue…)
Sakura sat in the steaming classroom, fanning her face with a piece of paper. She glanced blearily at the clock and realized that she had only been in class for five minutes.
Halfway across the room, sat Syaoran, playing the past evening's events over and over in his head. He had gone too far for poor Sakura, and she had barely said a word to him that morning. He felt guilty for pushing something so delicate on her, but also curious as to what would happen next. When would she finally be comfortable? Would she ever?
He sighed, massaging his brow. So much to think about. So much to worry about.
Syaoran glanced at Sakura, who was frantically fanning her face with a textbook.
Same old Sakura, he thought, chuckling.
The class went silent as the teacher glanced up at him.
“Is there something funny about klaumidia, Mr. Li?” The teacher asked skeptically, enunciating his words as to embarrass Syaoran as much as he could. The class giggled. The teacher cleared his throat. All heads were back to their papers, hiding their fits of giggles.
Sakura caught Syaoran's eyes, raising her eyebrows, laughter playing across her lips. Nice one, Syaoran, sooooo smooth.
His eyes lit up, just you wait, it's irregular for me to be laughed at but you get teased daily.
Shut up, Sakura's eyes glistened, a scowl plastered on her face.
True to Syaoran's words, the teacher looked to Sakura five minutes later. “Miss Kinomoto! Please close that window immediately! It may be hot in here, but causing fumes to enter the room isn't going to help!”
“What?” Sakura asked, looking to her hand, she had been opening it instinctively. “Oops,” she whispered, shutting the window immediately.
Too late. The room was instantly filled with pesticide, burning the students eyes and causing Sakura to cough and heave.
“So smart, Sakura!” Syaoran yelled, jumping over desks and running across the room to her aid. The room dispersed, leaving Syaoran and Sakura alone in the room.
Sakura's eyes watered. She tried to squeeze tears out of her eyes but her whole body was starting to shut down. Her vision and stability wavered. Her body was sent crashing to the floor.
Syaoran leaped over a couple more desks and finally got to Sakura. She was unconscious and her windpipe would close up if he didn't do anything; fast. He grabbed hold of her waist, throwing her limp body over his shoulders. The fumes began to cause him to feel nauseous but he ignored the watering in his eyes and the weakness in his knees. All he cared about was getting Sakura out of there.
He tripped over desks and chairs, his vision wavering. He tried as hard as he could to stay awake, but it was getting harder to. The alien fumes were corroding his body, so the brain's instinct was to shut down. System restart.
His knees buckled and he felt his body go airborne. Sakura flew from his arms. He screamed incoherently.
“SAKURA!”
Syaoran rolled on the ground, running to catch Sakura. She was headed straight for the chalkboard. Fear gripped Syaoran's body at the thought of what would happen if Sakura's delicate frame were to crash into that hard, rough board.
He jumped up, throwing himself in the way. He took the impact instead, Sakura's body crashing into him instead. It caused a chain reaction for Syaoran to collide with the wall.
Sakura ended up on Syaoran's lap. His breathing bated and his head cocked to one side. Sakura was safe; that was all that mattered.
The professor clambered into the toxin-filled room, horrified to see that two people were still in the room. Both severely injured; both unconscious.
With the help of several teachers, the young couple was taken out of the toxic room and taken to the hospital.
Shaken up and bruised, they both arrived home two days later.
“Oh, Sakura…” Toya sighed, as she came in through the front door. “First you sleep with that brat, Syaoran, and then you end up in the hospital for two days straight! All because of him!”
“I didn't sleep with him!” Sakura shot back, her face contorting to a deep red colour; and her knees knocking together. “And it was my fault at school! He saved me! I would have died otherwise!”
“Sure, if throwing you into the teacher's desk can really be considered saving you!”
“Would you rather I had cracked my head open? Cause if he hadn't have caught me, then that's what would have happened,” Sakura yelled, squeezing her eyes shut. She was seeing red. “You're such a jerk! Just like how dad was!”
Sakura covered her mouth immediately, tears forming in her eyes. “I-I…”
Toya's face softened, his eyes filling with sadness. He opened his mouth to yell back, but caught himself. Instead, he looked at Sakura with such fury in his eyes. He seemed unsure for a moment, but then brought his open hand to hit Sakura's soft cheek. He then spoke, his voice hoarse and final: “You never talk about dad like that! You got it? He was a good person, way better than you; way more responsible!”
Sakura bit her lower lip, feeling anger and sadness wash over her. She didn't know which emotion to express first, her overwhelming sadness or her undeniable anger.
Silently, she walked out of the room, opening the door and running away as fast as she could.
Toya considered running after her, but Sakura had disappeared into the distance even before he could find his shoes.
He slid into the nearest chair, looking down at his right hand, callus and tough. The exact opposite of Sakura's delicate skin. He rested his head on his knees, tears flowing from his cheeks.
The only family I have left, and I've chased her away…
