Chapter 5

Sakura was acutely aware of the new Card in her possession.  It was as if it was trying to burn a hole in her pocket.  She glanced from the corner of her eye at Syaoran where he walked beside her, dripping wet, hands stuffed into his pockets and shoulders hunched.  His face was still red and he'd avoided looking at her since the sealing of The Libido.  "U-um…Syaoran-kun…" She began hesitantly, lightly placing her hand on his arm and frowning when he jumped, his startled gaze flying to hers for a moment as his face turned an alarming shade of red before he looked down again.  "Are you all right?"  She asked softly, concern evident in her green gaze as well as her tone.

"Y-yeah."  Syaoran cleared his throat and hunched his shoulders more as he stared at the ground with a thoughtful frown.  Sooner or later she's gonna find out.  Maybe I should just get it over with and tell her.  He glanced at his companion from the corner of his eye and shook his head hard.  Who was he fooling?  There was no way he could tell her the truth!  It was unthinkable.  "I'm fine."

The Cardcaptor frowned and shook her head slowly.  She knew he wasn't being honest with her, but she didn't know why.  "I-is it about…" She paused and swallowed passed the painful lump lodged in her throat.  "About Tomoyo-chan?"  She asked quietly, almost afraid of what his reply would be.

"Eh?"  His steps halted abruptly as he stared at her in surprise.  "Daidouji-san?"  He repeated slowly.  "Do you mean what happened at the school, Sakura?"  He had to be absolutely certain what it was he was defending himself against, but this seemed to be the most logical thing for her to be talking about.

Holding her hands in front of her she stared down at her fingers as she tapped them together, a blush rising to stain her cheeks as she remembered the occurrence he was referring to.  "Y-yes."  She whispered, voice almost too soft for her companion to hear.

Sighing deeply, Syaoran turned to face her fully and reached out to grasp her by the shoulders.  "Sakura…" He began slowly, carefully choosing his words lest he make an even bigger fool of himself than he already had by freezing during the Hentai Card's attack.  Flushing, he shook his head sharply to rid himself of the memories of what Tomoyo had been doing.  "Daidouji-san is a friend…nothing more.  I've never thought of her as anything else."

She looked up slowly, reluctantly meeting his sincere gaze.  "R-really?"  She whispered softly, barely able to keep the hope from her tone.

Smiling, he nodded.  "Yeah.  The only girl I've ever liked was you, Sakura."  He could feel his cheeks colouring again but ignored it.  This was too important to give in to his acute embarrassment.

A wide smile spread across her features as her eyes seemed to shine with happiness.  Throwing her arms around him, she hugged him tightly.  "I'm so glad!"  Pulling back from the impromptu embrace she blushed slightly as she released him.  "I feel the same way, Syaoran-kun."  Turning away she started walking again, happy that her concerns…or at least some of them…had been laid to rest.  "It was nice of Meilin-chan to offer to walk Tomoyo-chan home."

"Yeah."  Syaoran thought that maybe there was more to it than mere consideration on his cousin's part.  He had a feeling she was going to quiz Tomoyo relentlessly until she was satisfied with the truth behind the encounter.  No matter how much both he and Sakura had insisted that the entire episode had been the work of a Hentai Card she hadn't seemed completely convinced.  Somehow, he felt that she blamed him for the entire thing and was merely using Tomoyo to gain information that would either prove him innocent…or sink him.  Once she'd given up the notion that she was in 'love' with him she'd focused all of her energy on forcing him to admit to Sakura the truth of his feelings and later on getting them together.  Now that she seemed to suspect that things might be off in that area, she was determined to discover the why's, how's and what-for's.  It was a situation that he wasn't particularly happy to be in.

Sakura halted at an intersection and looked over at Syaoran silently for a moment.  "W-would you like to come over for dinner sometime?"  She asked hesitantly, almost afraid of what his answer may be.  He'd never said anything derogatory concerning her

culinary skills in the past, but she was still nervous and uncertain as to what his possible reaction might be.

Stuffing his hands into his pockets he rocked back on his heels and grinned.  "I'd like that."  He secretly hoped her brother wouldn't be around.  The two of them had never gotten on well in the past and he doubted Touya would like him much more now.

"Really?  Great!  Um…how about…" She thought furiously, trying to remember her brother's work schedule.  She didn't want to place the two of them in close quarters quite yet.  Touya was still over protective of her, much to her embarrassment many times.  "Thursday evening?"  She suggested hopefully, silently praying her older brother's schedule didn't change suddenly.

Nodding in agreement he started to back away slowly.  "I'll see you tomorrow, then."  He paused, expression becoming serious.  "Be careful, Sakura."

"I will!  Don't worry about me, Syaoran-kun.  I'll be fine."  Smiling, she turned and hurried down the street towards her house.  She was already late and this was her night to prepare dinner for herself and Touya.  If she ran, she'd make it in time to avoid embarrassing questions and teasing.  She had no doubt that her brother was fond of her, it was just that he chose to display it in the strangest and most annoying ways possible.  He still hadn't stopped calling her 'kaijuu' yet despite the fact that she was nearing her eighteenth birthday.  "Sheesh…when's he going to realize that I'm not a little kid anymore?"  Shaking her head, she bounded up the steps to the front door.

       "Sakura-chan!"

"Hoeh?"  Pausing with her hand on the door handle, she turned at the sudden greeting.  "Yukito-san!"  Waving enthusiastically she waited for the young man to join her.  "Are you here to see onii-chan?"  She asked as she opened the door and stepped to the side to allow him to enter first.

"Yes.  I hope I'm not intruding…" He allowed the sentence to trail off, expression reflecting his concern over the fact.

"Of course not!"  She hastened to assure him.  Quickly stepping out of her outdoor shoes and slipping on her indoor slippers she set her book bag down on the floor.  "I'm home!"  She called out cheerfully before bounding up the stairs to her room.  "I'll start dinner right away!"  She shouted before closing her door and stripping off her uniform.

"Sakura!"  Kero flew straight at his Mistress wearing a comical expression filled with desperation and pleading.  "Help me!"  He wailed pathetically as he dove into her shirt.

Face turning bright red with mortification as the diminutive Guardian nestled into her bra, she slapped at his small form furiously.  "Kero-chan!"  Reaching into her shirt she tried unsuccessfully to dislodge him.  "Get off of me!"  She shouted, swatting at him again.

"Hide me!"  Kero's voice wobbled pathetically.

"H-hoeh?"  Giving up on trying to force him out of her shirt, she pulled the collar out and away from her neck to peer down the front of herself.  Kero was huddled within her cleavage much to her dismay.  "What's wrong, Kero-chan?"

"Th-that…that…" He sputtered, face turning an alarming shade of red.  "That female!  That's what's wrong!  Keep her away from me!"

"Hoeh?  Do you mean Saol-chan, Kero-chan?"

"Who else?"  He muttered and scowled up at her.  "You have no idea what kind of hell she's put me through today!"  Kero folded his small arms over his chest.  "I'm going to school with you tomorrow and that's that.  She'll have no choice but to leave me alone then."

She agreed reluctantly.  "All right…but you can't stay in my shirt, got it?"  He nodded slowly.  "Good.  Now…get out, Kero-chan!  I have to hurry.  I'm already late and it's my turn to prepare dinner."
