Lovebirds in the Anime Matrix.

Part One: The Lord and the Firefly.

The tall inuyoukai watched as the woman-child pulled her hair back into a loose bun. It was black and shiny, and Sesshomaru could imagine the feel of it between his fingers; he knew that it must be the softest, smoothest hair of any female he'd ever known.

It was mating season, and he knew that his senses had heightened just that morning. Now, he watched her from the staircase as she rolled up her sleeves and began to dig into the sink for dishes. He breathed in through his nose, letting himself relish her sweet scent ("I wish to feel smaller under your sheets. I wish for the whole truth every time you speak. And I think about how you care half as much for me as you arise from smoked cigarette sleep").

He recognized footsteps coming up behind him. Barely turning, Sesshomaru knew it was Kagome before she even rounded the corner at the top of the stairs. Her sweet, flowery scent seemed to smack Sesshomaru in the face; if he wasn't so interested in the firefly standing at the sink, he would have taken Kagome right there on the stairs. However, he allowed her to pass by, Inuyasha following closely behind. The whelp did not seem to be in the best of moods; he seemed just as tense as Sesshomaru felt.

The two brothers nodded to one another in understanding as the halfbreed passed by; Inuyasha was having a hard time as well (no pun intended).

'The priestess is a bit hard to resist when she wears that damned skirt,' he thought.

That thought caused his golden gaze to return to the beautiful female that stood in the kitchen, washing dishes.

The animal within him stirred; it craved her. As she scrubbed the dishes in her hands, her own extremely short skirt fluttered provocatively around her creamy thighs. When she turned her back to him, opening the dishwasher and bending over to load it with plates and glasses and silverware, Sesshomaru caught the unexpected flash of white panties. As he stared at the girl's barely covered ass, the inuyoukai could feel his resolve crumbling.

'No,' he thought, tearing his eyes away from the tantalizing sight before him. He hurried up the stairs, desperate to escape that heavenly scent. 'I am the Inu no Taisho,' he told himself sternly, 'the leader of my clan. I refuse to be swayed so easily.'

He ducked into the nearest empty room, finding a very large window built into the wall across from the door. Without thinking, he quickly opened it and climbed along the outside of the grand Arcanus House, finding his way to the roof. The cool evening air helped to calm his fastly rising urges ("I guess it doesn't matter what I say or what I seem. You stuck what I felt for you in the pocket of your jeans. Ignoring me the morning after isn't enough").

Sesshomaru had never felt such feelings toward a female. These emotions were completely alien to him; he had sent Rin away as soon as her thirteenth summer had arrived, and he could begin to smell the approach of her womanhood.

Some days he missed the girl; for years, he had only seen her as his possession, as something - someONE - to submit, though he never had any trouble with her. She had an obnoxious smile, he mused as he sat atop this roof, watching with cool disinterest as the moon rose, taking the sun's place in the starlit sky. It was that smile that he sometimes found himself missing; the only reason the inuyoukai had found it obnoxious was because it broke through the hardened wall that had built up around his heart.

His eyes narrowed into a hardened glare as he watched the moon slowly rise up into the night sky, casting its milky light across the sea that stretched before him. It was quite peaceful here, Sesshomaru mused as he attempted to calm himself once more. 'At least up here I am not under the influence of that girl and her wretched scent,' he thought.

At the very end of that thought, that sweet aroma met his nostrils once more, causing Sesshomaru to snap his gaze back down to her gorgeous face.

Hotaru was very small, Sesshomaru realized right then ("And I swear I'm gonna cry, I'm sick of trying to be tough, and my blood won't stick to the confines of my veins, and your heart is gonna tear mine away"). How such a small being could have such an astounding effect on him, he could not explain.

The darkest black of night could not compete with her eyes, he thought as he gazed into them, losing himself. Her skin was a milky white, and it contrasted sharply with the dark black of her eyes and hair. Her hair, which was just a bit longer than shoulder-length, was shiny, and it curtained around her face, framing it perfectly. She had high cheekbones, a rather beautiful feature, Sesshomaru mused. Her chin was sharp, causing her face to create a sort of heart shape.

She sat down beside him, this woman in a girl's body. He couldn't tell exactly what her body looked like; she had changed into a slightly loose-fitting white T-shirt, but she had remained in her black schoolgirl's skirt and black ankle-high boots. For some reason, she smiled at him, and it wasn't at all like Rin's smile. No, this was a bright, friendly gesture, and it caused Sesshomaru, somehow, to smile in return.

"You're Inuyasha's older brother, correct?" she asked politely.

Her voice drifted through the air and circled Sesshomaru, who could hear her gentle words ringing in his ears. He was so wrapped up in the caressing sound of her voice that he nearly answered, "Yes," without thinking. Forcing himself to snap out of this trance she had pulled him into, the inuyoukai sat up, making one last attempt to maintain his dignified manner.

"No," he answered, his tone unnecessarily gruff, "that mutt is my half-brother. He is one-half human, his weakness stemming from his mortal mother's wretched blood."

Hotaru watched the tall youkai as his golden eyes narrowed, and he glared at the crashing waves below them. He briefly wondered what he would feel if Hotaru suddenly fell forward and he had to watch as she tumbled downward, her small, enticing body smashing into the sharp, jagged rocks below. Sesshomaru glanced over at her once more to make sure she still sat beside him, her small body safe and unsmashed. It gave him a strange sense of calm to know that she was all right, that she was close to him. The girl had a very gentle aura; it reminded him vaguely of the wind.

She watched him closely; there was something a little off about him right now. Hotaru had spoken to Sesshomaru a few times since they'd started this battle, but right now he seemed to have a very strange sense of... urgency? Anxiety? It floated around him in a cloud, it seemed to Hotaru. She could sense his anxiety; it was borderline fear.

"You know, you don't have to be so afraid of me."

The inuyoukai was, for once, caught off-guard. He stared at her, his golden eyes raging with some unknown emotion ("And I wish to feel smaller under your hands, though you seemed satisfied as you slip mine down your pants").

She giggled at the look on his face. "I know you're trying to maintain some composure, but don't worry. I won't tell anybody."

"How do you know?"

To Hotaru, his voice sounded small and slightly insecure. He was watching her very closely, almost hopefully.

The petite Sailor Soldier looked out at the fastly darkening night sky. The wind blew her hair right then, and she turned those glassy, black eyes to Sesshomaru. In that moment, he thought she looked majestic.

"Everyone's always been somewhat afraid of me," she answered quietly. Rarely did the young Soldier let anyone know how much it actually bothered her to be the Soldier of Death; she almost couldn't believe that she was about to admit it to a near-stranger. She sighed without really meaning to. "I just... I'm not sure how ready I was for this."

Sesshomaru was confused by her words. "For what?"

She became frustrated right then, her aura flashing red for a moment before settling back to a placid blue. She stood and turned away from him, her arms coming up to cross over her breasts. Sesshomaru licked his lips as they caught his careful eyes; he had to force himself to look away, out to the sea.

"I wasn't ready for all the battles," she murmured, resting her chin on her left shoulder, her head barely turned to him. Her eyes were closed, and she was breathing in the cool, salty air, trying to calm herself once more. "I wasn't ready for the wars. I wasn't ready for the death, the destruction. So many people... And I killed them all." She shook her head furiously right then, her aura flashing a dangerous red once more. Tears sprang to her closed eyes.

Amid the salt of the air, Sesshomaru could smell her sudden tears. Surprised, he came to his feet, and, without thinking, he whirled her around and leaned down, quickly capturing her lips with his own ("And I think about how you care half as much for me, as you lift up my shirt after asking politely").

They were so soft, he realized right as the animal inside of him stirred and rose to the surface finally. It had been decades since he had last taken a female during the inu mating season, but there was no way he would ever forget how to go about it. His instincts flashed through him like lightning, and he wrapped his arms around her tiny frame, his claws grazing the waistband of her short skirt.

As Sesshomaru relished the taste of her lips, his animal craved more of her. Hungrily, his tongue darted into her mouth, rubbing against her own. Hotaru gasped and shuddered, collapsing into his embrace. Her scent, her taste... it all filled him, surrounded him, and Sesshomaru had never wanted anything more than he wanted this small female in his arms. He wanted to hold her, to kiss her, to fuck her...

He wanted to own her.

The kiss became rough very suddenly, teeth clashing with fangs. Her body responded quite positively, the Inu no Taisho knew; the scent of her arousal filled his nostrils suddenly, and it was unlike anything he had ever smelled. This female's scent was downright... exotic.

He had to have her.

He broke the kiss, conquering his inner beast finally yet momentarily. Looking her directly in her dazed eyes, he asked in a low, husky tone, "May I have you?"

She tried to blink away the haze in her head. "Wh-What?"

Sesshomaru pulled her to him, his nose touching hers. His golden orbs bore right into her. "Hotaru, I am making sure that you are a willing participant. I normally would not wait for your permission to take you as my own, but I feel as though you deserve differently. This is not a mating, this is not permanent. Afterwards, if either of us chooses to walk away from the other, it would be allowed." He watched her a moment longer, seeing the clear look in her eyes. "May I have you?"

She hesitated, but Hotaru nodded. That was good enough for Sesshomaru.

The inuyoukai picked her up bridal-style and gracefully made his way down to the open window ("And I guess it doesn't matter what I am or pretend to be, cause it's her you'll always love, and it's her I'll always envy"). He laid her gently down on the bed, but as soon as he was sure the door was locked tight, the animal inside him took over. His clothes were gone in seconds, and he leapt at her, growling and purring simultaneously as his claws tore her white T-shirt to shreds. Sesshomaru bared his fangs and nipped at her neck and breasts, sucking eagerly on the nipples. Hotaru moaned softly and writhed beneath him, and he growled at her, willing her to be still.

She continued to move and make noise beneath him. The inuyoukai grabbed a fistful of her soft, black hair and nipped her shoulder in warning. She stared up at him, a little frightened but still completely willing.

He didn't care about her skirt, but her panties were in the way. Sesshomaru carefully slid the strange undergarments down her long, silky legs, not bothering to take her shoes off.

The soft texture of her creamy legs deterred his beast for a few moments, and he found himself rubbing his cheeks and nose along her inner thighs. He was so close to the origin of that amazing, arousing scent... He wondered momentarily what she tasted like.

To find out, he licked her small, pulsing nub. She cried out in surprise and pleasure, and Sesshomaru smirked in a very Inuyasha-like fashion. He licked it again and again, and she spread her legs more for him, her cries slowly becoming moans and whimpers of wanting. He wanted her to cry out for him again; his inner animal demanded it. He growled slightly as he took the fleshy nub between his teeth and was immediately rewarded with more screams. "Please," he could hear her whispering, "please... I need you inside me..."

He grinned at her words as he slid two fingers inside her dripping core. Hotaru writhed beneath his clawed hands; she grabbed the pillow closest to her and pressed it against her face in a sad attempt to muffle her screams and moans. Sesshomaru smiled as he nibbled on her pulsing clit, earning more hushed screams ("And I want to end this now so that dreams of you won't keep me up. But I swear I'm gonna cry, I'm sick of trying to be tough. And my blood won't stick to the confines of my veins. And your heart is gonna tear mine away").

Sesshomaru pumped his fingers in and out of her slick, sweet-smelling folds as he sat back a little, ceasing the assault on her little nub. Her cries slowed and calmed a little, but she still begged him under her breath, "Please... Sesshomaru, please... I need you..."

He continued to feel her soft insides with his fingertips as he settled on top of her, his chin resting on her taut stomach. His golden eyes glittered in the moonlight that poured in through the still open window. "Yes, Hotaru? What do you need?"

She whimpered a few more times before murmuring, "I need you... Sesshomaru... Inside me..."

Hearing those exact words in her breathy, tiny, innocent voice caused the inuyoukai's already hardened cock to stiffen even more. Ignoring her moans of disappointment when he withdrew his fingers and licked them clean, he yanked her skirt up and thrust inside her, one quick movement. He knew that doing this quick would limit the amount of pain that she would feel, this being her first time. Her scent instantly changed, but it was a very subtle change, one that any other type of youkai wouldn't have been able to pick up on.

She was a maiden no longer.

Sesshomaru smiled down at her as the look of pain passed from Hotaru's face, and he paused, giving her enough time to adjust to him. "Are you all right?" he asked her. She smiled back, nodding ("And it's hard to find what I want when it's buried beneath the biggest rock. I could pay lots of money to help lift it with machines, but I'm not sure you'd cooperate, not sure you'd come clean").

After a few moments, he moved inside her, pulling his cock out and sliding, slowly and carefully, back in. She sighed contentedly, surprised at the pleasurable feelings she was experiencing; Hotaru had heard that the first time was hard, painful. There had been a little bit of pain, when he first started, but... This was nice.

Sesshomaru wasn't entirely aware of himself as he slid in and out of little Hotaru. His palms rubbed against her collarbone, and he enjoyed the softness beneath his clawed fingertips. Her insides felt like velvet - soft, wet velvet. Her lips were the softest he had ever kissed, and, remembering this, he leaned down, still smiling like a fool, and captured her lips again as he continued to pump his cock in and out of her.

She started to writhe once again beneath him, and his beast began to immerge once again. He growled as she moaned in pleasure beneath him, and he nipped her shoulder lovingly. His inner animal yearned to mate her, to mark her as his own. But... He stopped himself. He had made her a promise, a promise that this would not be permanent.

Sesshomaru was determined to keep that promise. He owed her that much at least.

When she finally came, he knew. He could read her movements, her sighs and her moans, quite well already; it was as if he had reached an all-new understanding of this small, mortal woman. She was already his, in a sense. She shuddered beneath him, her arms flinging wildly around his frame, hugging him close. Her breasts were soft and her nipples were erect as she pressed against his bare chest, and Sesshomaru buried his face in her shiny hair and closed his eyes. Holding himself up with one hand, the other shot up to hold the back of her head in his palm, nuzzling her ear and jawline.

She came again, and her moans were hushed this time, as though she didn't want anyone to hear. Sesshomaru didn't care; he could care less what any of the others thought of him. He had wanted her... and he had taken her.

Finally, when it seemed as though they had been making love for forever, he came, spilling his white-hot seed inside her. He collapsed beside her, panting heavily. Sesshomaru felt as though he'd been temporarily released from the animal that was mating season, and he knew now that he was allowed to just lay with Hotaru, cherishing the smell of his scent mingling with hers.

As the Soldier of Death curled up in his arms, Sesshomaru had one last thought before they both drifted off into dreamless sleep: 'This isn't mating season. This is bliss.'
****************************

Sesshomaru sighed as the limo pulled up outside the small suburban home of his ex ("And I wish to feel smaller under your sheets. I wish for the whole truth every time you speak. And I think about how you care half as much for me as I watch you arise from smoked cigarette sleep"). It had ended quite roughly with Hotaru; the woman had died at the end of the final battle, but Sesshomaru had, obviously, used Tenseiga to bring her back to the land of the living. He couldn't let her go quite yet.

They had left the Matrix shortly after, trying to make a life together despite their obvious differences. However, things had proven far too difficult for them, and they had parted ways not long after returning from the fighting.

It had taken several years, but Sesshomaru had finally admitted to himself that he loved her. He missed her exotic scent and her small frame. He had enjoyed hearing of her battles and her time spent as the Soldier of Death for the Sailor Senshi. He wouldn't even have minded mating her, despite the fact that she was a mere human. She had unimaginable strength, and the Inu no Taisho thought every single day of what he gave up when he left her.

He'd finally found out where she was living. It had been four years since he'd last seen her, and, for some reason, he was nervous. It was a laughable idea to him; the great Sesshomaru, Inu no Taisho of the inuyoukai, was nervous! Over a female, of all things! It was a very strange feeling, he had to admit. Now he knew what Inuyasha went through whenever Kagome came around him; his mutt half-brother had mated the human priestess not long after they had left the Matrix.

After his time spent with Hotaru, Sesshomaru could understand why. 'It has to be something about that damned skirt...'

The house was, indeed, rather small; the outside panels were painted an antique shade of white, and the shutters were a light blue color that reminded him of the sky in early morning. The grass in the front yard was green and well-kept; Hotaru may have been the Dealer of Death when she worked with the Sailor Scouts, but she was a master of landscaping, it seemed ("And I guess it doesn't matter what I say or what I seem. You stuck what I felt for you in the pocket of your jeans. Ignoring me the morning after isn't enough"). As he approached the house, making good use of the stone walkway that had been paved from the sidewalk to the wooden front door, he was immediately assaulted by the young woman's alluring scent.

As he came up to the front door and raised his fist to knock upon it, another scent invaded his keen nostrils. It was strangely familiar to him, yet he could not place it... Finally, his eyes caught the small flicker of unnecessary color in the backyard, just past the wrought-iron gate. Unfastening the lock on the gate, he opened it and entered the backyard, coming closer to the unfamiliar object.

It was a bicycle. The tires were small and white, and they looked dirty, used. The bike as a whole was painted pink, a bright, rude color that made him blink in confusion. The streamers emanating from the ends of the handlebars glittered pinks and silvers and purples in the bright sunlight. His breath caught as he looked over it, perplexed by its size and the fact that the strange new scent was covering it.

"Sesshomaru?"

He whirled around to face her, surprised that she'd been able to sneak up on him so easily; he must have been more shocked by the mere presence of the bicycle than he had originally thought.

Hotaru had grown, it seemed. She was a good foot taller now than when he had last seen her, but everything else seemed to have remained the same. She was still very petite, her frame thin and a bit gangly. No longer did she wear that accursed skirt; she was standing before him dressed in dark, tight blue jeans, brown sandals, and a loose, yellow T-shirt. Her hair was a little longer now than he remembered, but it was mostly still the same: black as night, shiny, sleek. Her eyes, though... They stood out from her pale face, piercing through the sunlit air ("And I swear I'm gonna cry, I'm sick of trying to be tough. Swear I'm gonna cry, sick of trying to be tough, yea").

"Hotaru," he breathed, his voice filled with amazement.

She stared at him, unbelieving. "What are you doing here?" She crossed her arms over her breasts in an attempt to look tough. It worked... slightly. "I mean, you left so long ago. I didn't ever think you were coming back." She still looked small, standing there in front of him. She looked somewhat thinner than he remembered, and he wondered briefly why.

"I... I've always thought about you," he answered. Sesshomaru took a small, cautious step forward. He knew this was - literally - dangerous ground to be treading on; he needed to be careful here. "I'm sorry I left."

She snorted; that caused the Inu no Taisho to relax somewhat. "Sure," she shot back, her tone overflowing with sarcasm, and she rolled her eyes, turning away from him a little. That was when he noticed she was shaking a little bit. That realization made him relax more; it meant that she was just a nervous as he was.

"No, I really am," he answered, ignoring the pain in his head at the loud screech of the brakes as a bright yellow school bus pulled up out front. He glared at the mechanical monstrosity; he had always hated vehicles, especially undermanaged ones. They always made too much noise.

When Sesshomaru turned his attention back to the woman standing before him, she had paled considerably. He blinked, stepping toward Hotaru again, not caring if he stepped on a trap or not. "Hotaru? Are you all right?"

She seemed about to answer him when they both were interrupted by a loud cry, "Ma!"

Hotaru froze. She finally turned away from Sesshomaru's surprised face to capture the small child running toward her in her arms. "Piper!" she cried out. "I missed you! How was your first day!"

Sesshomaru stared at the small girl. She was but a pup, barely four years old, if he recognized the signs well enough still; that made her about the size of a human eight year old. She had a good bit of inuyoukai blood in her; her hair was very long, and it shined a pretty, majestic silver color in the sun. Her eyes, as she tilted her head upward to look at him, were a deep black, the same as Hotaru's. Her face was nearly white, and it was heart-shaped, just like her mother's. Her nose was sharp, and when she smiled at him, Sesshomaru saw fangs.

"What's your name?" she asked; her voice was light and sweet, and it reminded Sesshomaru of Hotaru.

He was overwhelmed suddenly. 'A pup?' he questioned in his thoughts. 'Hotaru was pupped?'

"When?" he whispered.

Piper became quiet as she felt the mood become tense surrounding her mother and this newcomer. She watched her mother closely as Hotaru responded, "I found out right after you left. I'd have told you... but I could never find you."

Sesshomaru growled, suddenly furious. "You lie, bitch!" he yelled, waving an angry, clawed hand at her. His fangs bared as he glared at her. "You could have found the half breed, or even the miko! Either one would have done. They both know where and how to find me." He turned away from her, unable to look at her and the pup anymore. "You just didn't want me to find out about my half-breed pup!"

Hotaru's dark eyes narrowed at his words. "What?" she practically hissed.

"You heard me, bitch!"

"Stop calling me that!"

"It's what you are, dammit!" he yelled at her. The pup cowered between them, leaning into her mother's gentle embrace. Hotaru sensed her daughter's fear, and, out of motherly reflex, she moved in front of the girl, positioning herself between Piper and Sesshomaru. Piper pressed up against Hotaru's backside, watching meekly from around her mother's body.

Sesshomaru drew his sword. Piper screamed, and Hotaru's aura flared in anger and panic. Piper stepped back as her mother transformed right then ("And my blood won't stick to the confines of my veins. And your heart is gonna tear mine away, is gonna tear mine away"). Hotaru was engulfed in that familiar, bright light, and when it faded, her jeans, T-shirt, and sandals had disappeared, and she was wearing her old black and white Sailor Senshi uniform, her Silence Glaive held tightly in her right hand.

"Put down the sword, Sesshomaru," Hotaru ordered in a low, dangerous voice.

He growled at her, his eyes flashing red and his grip tightening on the sword's hilt. "The mutt has to be disposed of," he snarled at her.

"She's not a mutt!"

"Of course she is!" he shrieked before lunging. Hotaru cried out as she took the Glaive in both hands and swung, catching the blade of Sesshomaru's sword with her own and yanking, effectively disarming the inuyoukai. Even without his sword, though, Sesshomaru was still eager to dispose of the wretched half-breed that shared his blood. The claws of his right hands dripped with poison, and he made another lunge at the girl.

Piper yelled again, and Hotaru appeared, snatching his wrist and holding it tightly in her small grasp.

The red disappeared from Sesshomaru's eyes as he watched, shocked, as the flesh of his wrist began to deteriorate. Black smoke rose from the fastly worsening wound.

He looked up, into his ex's eyes. She was determined, he could see. Hotaru would not have turned her powers of death on him if she wasn't determined. He took a step back, and she released him, sensing his surrender.

"What else would she be?" he asked quietly, his tone almost sounding sad. He stared at the small girl standing behind Hotaru.

"She's a full inuyoukai, just like yourself."

His stunned eyes tore away from the pup to look into Hotaru's. "H-How can that be?" he asked, incredulous.

Hotaru glared at him. "I don't really know," she answered, taking the pup in her arms again. "It just... happened. The doctors said something about the fact that I'm not human may have played a role, but no one knows for sure. I mean, a youkai's never pupped an alien before."

Sesshomaru was astounded and frozen as all this new information flooded him, overwhelming him much like a tall ocean wave. "You... You aren't human?" he stammered.

She stared at him. "No!" she screeched after just a second of shock, stamping her foot in the dirt like an angry child. Another bright flash, and she was dressed in normal, civilian clothes once again. "I've never BEEN human, Sesshomaru! I'm the princess of Saturn! If I'm from another PLANET, how the hell can I be human?!"

They both stood there for a few minutes, Hotaru angry with Sesshomaru and still standing quite protectively in front of Piper, Piper still huddling, afraid, behind her mother's towering form, and Sesshomaru still dumbfounded. He stared down at the small girl, who still watched him very cautiously from around her mother's small body. Now that he stopped to really observe her, he found her... beautiful, truly breathtaking.

His mouth opened, then closed, then opened again as he searched frantically for the right words. "Hotaru... I'm so sorry-"

"What for?" she spat at him, her nose scrunched in anger. Her words, to Sesshomaru, stung like poison; he turned his face away from her, shamed. He felt bad suddenly, though he knew it was not his fault for this. He felt as though he had dishonored her by allowing her to be the unwed mother of an inuyoukai girl. But, in doing this, she had in return dishonored him.

"I came here... to apologize..."

"And you did." She had turned her eyes away from him. 'Perhaps she's just as ashamed as I am,' Sesshomaru thought.

Right as that thought crossed his mind, Hotaru turned her head sharply, and her dark eyes seemed to bore right into him. They were filled with such hate, such rage... He was taken aback. "I would like for you to leave now," she told him in a very firm voice, one that he would never have expected to hear coming from the firefly's small, innocent mouth.

"But Hotaru-"

Suddenly, the wind picked up fiercely, and Hotaru's and Piper's hair blew along with it, toward Sesshomaru. His blew behind him, and he could no longer see the two girls as darkness fell over them quickly, the bright day fastly becoming deep night. When everything brightened again, he was standing in the courtyard of his feudal castle, alone and surrounded, no longer by tension and regret, but by the slowly falling sakura blossoms. The damned tree Rin had planted here so many years ago was in bloom once again. There was no sign of the small, suburban house, the limousine, the small, pink bicycle...

No Hotaru. No Piper.
************************

Sesshomaru looked up when he heard a commotion coming from the foyer. "What is the meaning of this?" he demanded, standing and stalking over to the door, one hand on the sword at his waist. He did not understand who or what would dare interrupt the Inu no Taisho as he sat in on one of his most important annual meetings. Then he paused, frozen where he stood by what he saw.

-I wish to feel smaller under your sheets-

She stood tall and thin before him, her frame small like her mother. Her skin was still china pale, her face was still shaped like a heart, and her eyes were still as black as the night itself. Her hair was much, much longer now, though; it reached all the way down to her knees, and it was still that same regal silver color. Her hair was thin, and it shined with a light that even Sesshomaru's could not catch.

-I wish for the whole truth every time you speak-

The girl wore a white fire-rat; Inuyasha must have made it for her. Sesshomaru seethed a little at that thought; his halfbreed brother should have known better than to take care of his daughter in his absence. She was not barefoot; no, she had further dishonored her father by stepping inside his castle still wearing the small, white slippers that currently protected her feet. The sash tied tightly around her small waist was a deep black, the same color as her eyes.

-And I think about how you care half as much for me-

She stood before him, glaring at him, her legs spread apart slightly in an offensive stance. "Do you remember me, Sesshomaru?" she asked. He was stunned by her voice; it was as though Hotaru stood there, eyes narrowed at him. Her voice was just as light and sing-songey as her mother's.

-As I watch you arise from smoke cigarette sleep-

"I remember you."

-And I guess it doesn't matter what I say or what I seem-

She stepped forward. His hand wrapped around the hilt of his sword. For some reason, her aura was a dangerous, angry red, and this threatened Sesshomaru.

-You stuck what I felt for you in the pocket of your jeans-

"My name is Piper Taisho," she told him in that same high voice. Still she stared at him, though, with such anger and poison in her eyes. Her voice sounded so small, so innocent, though... It reminded Sesshomaru vividly of the one time he had ever met his daughter, when she was just a small girl hiding behind her mother.

-Ignoring me the morning after isn't enough-

As she took a few more steps toward him, finally crossing the grand foyer. Her scent seemed to hit him full in the face; it was very much like Hotaru's, exotic and sweet. It held a slight familiarity to it; the familiar part was something like sunflowers. He knew what it was that had created this part of her scent. It was somewhat like his own; he could tell. Sesshomaru could just tell.

-And I swear I'm gonna cry, I'm sick of trying to be tough-

"You left her heart broken," Piper murmured, her black eyes ablaze with a fire Sesshomaru had rarely seen before. "You left her, pupped, and then you expected to just be allowed back into her life!" Her small voice had become high, shrill... angry. "Then she sent you away from us - from me! For my own good, she always said." Tears gathered in the corners of her eyes as she glared at her father. "When I was small, she always spoke so well of you. She always told me that I came from a good family, that I had a good and noble father, and, if you had been given the chance, you would have taken care of us, raised me."

-And my blood won't stick to the confines of my veins-

She spat at him, and Sesshomaru stared at her, his golden eyes wide with shock. Then he became furious. "But there's nothing good and noble about you! You're just a bastard!" she shouted at him.

-And your heart is gonna tear mine away-

He snarled at her as soon as her words sunk in, and he whipped the sword from its sheath. "You will die, pup!"

"Not before you!" she yelled back, drawing her own from the sheath strapped to her back.

-And it's hard to find what I want when it's buried beneath the biggest rock-

Father and daughter launched at each other, Sesshomaru swiping at her with his poisoned claws. She barely dodged them and brought her hand down, swinging her sword with it. The sharp blade grazed his shoulder, drawing blood. The older inuyoukai suddenly saw red as she pulled her arm back and shoved the sword forward, completely through his body.

-I could pay lots of money to help lift it with machines-

Piper's black eyes remained on his as she held the sword through his gut. She seemed to be searching for something. Then she ripped the katana free, allowing her father to bleed out.

-But I'm not sure you'd cooperate, not sure you'd come clean-

Sesshomaru stared up at her. "You know, pup, that that alone won't kill me."

She stared back down at him, her eyes wide and full of tears as a certain, unforgiving memory popped into her head. She remembered her mother, her poor mother, as she lay there, sick and dying. Piper had watched for many months as the once-vibrant Hotaru, the Soldier of Death, wasted away into nothing but a frail, empty body. Her last words rang in her daughter's ears: "Please, Piper. Please forgive your father."

-And I swear I'm gonna cry, I'm sick of trying to be tough; swear I'm gonna cry, sick of trying to be tough-

She knew that Sesshomaru was right. Taking the hilt of her katana in both hands, she kicked him in the side, turning him over. He knelt before her now, weakened too much from blood loss to move away. Taking a step to her right, Piper now found herself on her father's left side. She lifted the thin katana high over her head, the tears that had gathered in her eyes finally falling in thin rivers down her cheeks.

-And my blood won't stick to the confines of my veins-

"I know," Piper whispered. Sesshomaru barely heard her; when he realized what she'd said, he turned his head slightly to the left. Looking up at her, gold met black, and Piper smiled down at the man she'd once wished to call "Otou-san."

-And your heart is gonna tear mine away-

She swallowed hard underneath that stare, still smiling. "I forgive you... Otou-san." The sword came swinging down as realization hit Sesshomaru. As she ended his life honorably, he smiled at the thought of finally becoming her father.
