Prologue:
It had hit them all with the force of a whirlwind. Disease…it started in the southern part of the region and worked its way to the rest of the cardinal points. No one saw it coming…no one could identify the strain…it tore families, friends, and lovers apart. It claimed the lives of countless thousands.
Then, a scientist arose and suggested a plan…Take the remaining population and put them in cryogenic stillness. For this scientist was the only person to remember the technology that had taken the human race to Gunsmoke in the first place. So…one by one…the people agreed to be frozen. In the last town to be affected by the lethal disease, a young woman of the age of 25 sat beside her friend's bedside tending to her illness-stricken partner. The young woman was Meryl Stryfe and her dying friend was Millie Thompson. The two friends worked for the Bernadelli Insurance Agency and had spent the better part of the past two years following the outlaw known as Vash the Stampede. Many battles later, the Humanoid Typhoon had disappeared and the women were left to their own devices. Then, not a solitary month later…the Disease hit. It was the worst thing to happen to the tiny planet of Gunsmoke since the destruction of July. "Millie…hang on there…you can make it…"
Meryl sobbed out to Millie's prone form. Millie smiled sadly, her once vibrant features drawn and sallow, "Meryl…please don't be sad…now…I want you to **cough** do anything you can to survive this…pain…" Meryl clutched at her friend's hand, "No…I won't…I can't leave you…" Millie began to cough violently, blood seeping out of her mouth.
Breathing labored, Millie used her last vestiges of strength to sit up and grab Meryl's jacket front, "Promise me you will survive! You have to…he would not do well…without…"
With one last cough, Millie Thompson passed on.
Meryl fell upon her friend's lifeless body and started to wail. The nurse came running in and grabbed Meryl up and pulled her close, "There…there…she is in a better place now…God will not let her life be in vain…"
Meryl pulled herself out of the nurse's arms, "Take me to the cryogenic lab…I will survive this fate…for Millie…"
