Chapter Three: Poison Strike

Fad slipped in quietly the next day, heading to he and Jet's bed as his lover slept a bit fitfully.

"Jet, I'm home." Fad whispered as he undressed and slip under the covers, wrapping his arms around Jet's waist.

"Hmm..." Jet murmured as he turned in his sleep, his mind slowly awakening to the warm presence behind his back.

"Jet, wake up." Fad spoke as he shook Jet awake. Brilliant blue eyes opened and Jet sat up in his bed. He recognized his lover and smiled.

"You're back early." Jet supplied as he yawned. He looked at his watch on the nightstand. It was 8a.m. Fad ran a hand through his brown hair.

"I missed you." Fad replied as he kissed Jet, his arms pinning Jet to the bed as their tongues spared for a moment. Jet's mind flashed back to the blue Crow were he had kissed Spike. Spike…Jet's mind murmured, remembering the feel of the bounty hunter pressed hard against him, the smell of gunpowder and the blues clinging from Spike's lithe form; his tongue deep within Jet's mouth as he tasted the detective. Jet pulled away from Fad, feeling guilty for thinking of Spike at a time like this. "Are you okay?" Fad asked in surprise as Jet moved away from him.

"I was just thinking about the case. I got some info while you were out yesterday." Jet replied as he got out of bed and opened the curtains, letting sunlight stream into the room.

"Okay then. Whenever you're ready, we'll go." Fad spoke as Jet walked into the bathroom. Fad lay on the bed, not sure what to make of Jet's unusual behavior. At least he didn't see all those bite marks on my neck. Fad thought ruefully. He felt somewhat and for cheating on his lover, but then again, Jet didn't know about his secret life as a syndicate informant, so he wasn't really doing anything wrong. Fad sighed, a frown in his features as he ignored his line of reasoning. What Jet thinks won't mater by the end of today anyway.

Jet sighed as the hot water from the shower head rained down on his body, working the knots form his muscles. Blue tendrils of hair entered Jet's eyes as he shampooed his hair, the wall of water surrounding him blocking out all other distractions. His mind wandered and he thought of Spike and Fad. When this case is over, I'll tell Fad. I'll tell him that…he doesn't need me anymore. I can feel us drifting apart. When I think of Spike…I *know* that he needs me. Just as much as I'm beginning to need him to. That line of revelation forced Jet to open his eyes and sigh.

"I am such an idiot." He mumbled as he finished his shower.

Spike lay in wait as he saw Fad's cruiser stream into the desert area at about half past six in the evening. The desert was cool and quiet and Spike waited for the inevitable fireworks with a lump in his throat. The bounty hunter shut his eyes, willing himself to remain cool and undetached as Fad's cruiser zoomed past him. Spike's radio sputtered to life and Gren's voice filled the Swordfish's cockpit.

"Hey Swordfish, Gren here. Just some quick info. The half buried ship that Ed is holed up contains a lost shipment of red eye that the Scarlet Snake syndicate is sending Fad to reclaim. Apparently, their rivals the Blue Demons are also going for the same shipment. This isn't a battle for you to get involved in and I doubt that the Ed kid will survive if she's caught up in this." Gren spoke.

"What!?" Spike replied as he grabbed his communicator.

"It won't matter. I mean, you only need her body to claim the bounty right?" Gren replied in confusion.

"No, Jet's there. Jet's in real trouble. He's going to save the kid. I can't let him die!" Spike spoke desperately as he began to switch on the Swordfish's systems. Gren registered the amount of emotion in Spike's voice as he spoke Jet's name.

"Spike… this Jet guy, is he worth what you're about to do?" Gren asked carefully. Never in his years with working with the bounty hunter had he ever seen Spike so taken by a designated enemy. Spike swore as he fired up his engines. Spike closed his eyes and then opened them, a smile gracing his lips.

"Yes, he's worth it." Spike replied. And with that, he took off.

"Damn it!" Jet swore as he ran down a long passageway, explosions rocking the already unstable ship as he and Fad ran through smoke and flying debris.

"Watch it Jet!" Fad called out as he aimed his gun at someone running down the hallway. The man cried as the bullet pierced his heart and dropped to the ground.

"You okay?" Jet asked as they crouched behind a door, a communicator beeping at the source of the ship's transmission tower. They had only arrived on the ship five minutes ago and where under attack by two rival syndicates duking it out over something Jet didn't know.

"I'm fine." Fad replied as Jet reloaded his gun. The flashing lights reflected off the metal curve under Jet's eye as he readied himself for the long run to get Ed. Beside him Ein sniffed anxiously. It was a dangerous place for the dog, but Jet knew that Ein would find Ed faster than he could.

"Fad, go on back to the ship. The radar just intercepted Ed's last communication with the satellites. She's just targeted some satellites to bombard some of the ships in the air above us. Get the ship ready and I'll meet you at the top." Jet called as he took off running, not waiting for Fad's answer. Fad turned and made his way back down the hallway. He ran into the arms of his lover whom was relived to see him.

"My partner's gone to get the kid. I'll be meeting him up top." Fad spoke as he fired a couple of rounds into the dusty hallway.

"That's where the shipment is. Get it, kill him and the kid and get back down here." Fad's partner replied as they took off running, watching their backs as they made their way to the less hazardous zones. A grenade rolled past their feet and blew up, and a green haired man came running in, kicking a man as his lithe form armed to the teeth ghosted past them.

"I'm sure Jet would love to hear what you two are planning." Spike spoke as he faced Jet's lover. Blood ran down the side of his face from a piece of flying debris that he had encountered earlier on when he reached the battle ground.

"The Swordfish! What are you doing here?" Fad's partner asked with a sneer as he aimed his gun at Spike.

"Saving lives." Spike spoke back as he took off, dodging the hail of bullets that came after him. Hang on Jet! Spike's mind willed as he made his way to the top of the ship.

"Cute doggy!" Ed chirped as she smiled brightly, coughing as she hugged the strange dog that had wandered into her layer. "Sorry doggy, things are going boom. Ed is confused." Edward spoke as she pulled her goggles off her face.

"Ein! Is she in here?!" Jet called as he kicked down a twisted metal door. Jet smiled as he saw Ed sitting unharmed. Ed jumped up reflexively, scared of the stranger.

"Who are you?" she asked as Ein ran to Jet's feet.

"I'm Jet. I've come to get you out of here safe and sound. How long until the ground explosives that you planted blow up?" he asked as he tucked Edward under his arm and ran out of the room reaching the top in no time.

"I minute!" Ed chirped happily, doing a dance on her bare toes. "Evil people won't get their drugs." She spoke solemnly as she carried Ein in her arms as Jet shot the latch off the door. He climbed out onto the top of the ship and pulled Edward out. All around them was an expanse of desert, the night sky dark blue and the fires of the two rival syndicates warming up the cold night.

"Glad that you made it Jet." Fad spoke as an explosion from the ground illuminated his face. His features were drawn and his eyes held a devious intent.

"I got her Fad. We can get the hell out of here!" Jet shouted as the wind carried his voice. He watched as Fad pulled out his gun, aiming at Jet. Confusion and hurt laced Jet's eyes as he pushed Edward and Ein behind him.

"Stop playing games Fad." Jet spoke back, steel entering his voice. He refused to believe what was happening. He can't be turning on me!

"I'm sorry Jet but I have orders to kill you." Fad spoke as he clicked back the hammer of his gun. Jet's blue eyes went wide. He realized that Fad was involved with the people fighting below them.

"You can't…after all this time you were part of a syndicate and you never told me. It all makes sense now. All the jobs that you encouraged me to take when it looked fishy. All the times you were gone nights and came back always happy. You just used me. Our relationship was just one of convenience." Jet spoke, forcing himself to push away the tears that burned in the back of his eyes. He used me for all those jobs…he…he doesn't even care about me.

"Always perceptive as usual my dear Jet. But it's too late this time. But it was good while it lasted." Fad spoke as he pulled the trigger. Jet heard a shout sail through the air as he was struck in two places. One was a burning pain in his leg and the other knocked him to the ground.

"Damn it Jet. Snap out of it!" someone yelled over Jet. Jet opened his eyes. Above him was Spike Spiegel looking pissed off but relieved.

"Spike? What are you doing here?" Jet asked as he sat up, mindful of the searing pain in his thigh.

"Saving your ass. Let's get out of here." Spike spoke as his ship the Swordfish came sailing up the side of the ship.

"What about Fad?" Jet spoke. Spike looked over his shoulder to where Fad lay in a pool of blood which seeped from his side.

"I shot him. He was going to kill you." Spike spoke, his tone empty as he led Jet, Ed and Ein to safety. As they departed from the ship, the ground rocked with explosives, destroying the red eye shipment that both syndicates craved. Jet shut his eyes and faded in and out of consciousness, the pain in his heart dueling with the pain in his leg. Edward regarded Spike who was silent, occasional glancing at Jet's worried face.

"Who are you?" she asked as she petted Ein, the dog watching faithfully over his master.

"I'm a friend." Spike replied with a wary smile. He wasn't terribly fond of kids, and this kid was rather strange.

"Oh…" Ed spoke, tipping her head to the side. Edward contemplated the looks that Spike kept giving Jet and the occasional glances that Jet gave Spike when he was conscious. A big grin spread over Edward's face. "Cute!" she exclaimed as she clapped her hands together. Apparently, her two new friends were in love with one another. She looked out of the Swordfish's window and waved goodbye to the satellites that had kept her company. She was now ready to go back home to her mom.

The rest of the ride went on without any event. Spike called up Gren and he booked a secure hotel for Spike and his friends. The hotel was quiet and was situated near the Blue Crow. Getting help from one of the workers there, Spike placed Jet in a bed and treated Jet's wound. Jet was conscious and he winced, a small hiss of pain escaping his teeth as the stranger poked at Jet's thigh.

"Damn!" he swore as he sat up. Spike sat on the bed next to him, his back faced to Jet as the man pulled the bullet from Jet's leg. He cleaned it and bandaged it and Spike tossed him some money. Smiling the man rose to leave.

"Take good care of him Swordfish. Just wash the wounds daily and re-bandage them and he'll be as good as new." The man spoke as he opened the door.

"Make sure to feed the kid and the dog." Spike replied. The man smiled.

"Will do." He replied as he shut the door.

"Feeling any better? You were fading in and out on the trip here." Spike spoke as he turned to face Jet. Jet sighed.

"I never imagined that this job would end like this." Jet replied as he strained to move his leg. Spike stopped him, placing his hand on Jet's thigh.

"What happened to all the blood on the side of your face?" Jet asked as he tried not to focus on Spike's hand that remained firmly placed on his thigh.

"Just a cut. I cleaned it up myself. It's nothing compared to some of the injuries I've had before." Spike replied as he removed his arm from Jet's thigh.

"Spike…thanks for coming after me." Jet spoke as Spike rose from the bed.

"I had to…I didn't tell you about the bombs planted around the ship." Spike spoke as he curled his fingers into a fist. Jet smiled.

"It's okay Spike. You said you were only going to provide information of her exact whereabouts," Jet spoke as he watched Spike pace. "Besides," Jet continued as a smile caught his lips, "it would have cost me more than a kiss." The blue haired detective spoke. Spike faced Jet, his eyes burrowing deeply into the other's eyes. Jet laughed, easing the intensity of Spike's gaze.

"What's so funny?" Spike asked as he swiftly approached the bed, straddling Jet's hips as he came nose to nose with Jet. Jet swallowed nervously as he spoke from his heart.

"Last night, after we kissed, I…would have stayed if you asked me. I would have never gone back to Fad." Jet spoke. Spike's red and brown eyes seemed startled by that but only Spike's voice replied.

"I'm glad that I'm not alone anymore." Spike replied as he pressed his lips to Jet's mindful of Jet's injured leg. Jet let Spike plunder him, his arms wrapping around Spike to hold the green haired man captive as they gently explored one another's mouths. Spike sighed softly as he pulled away from Jet. He lay down beside Jet and placed his head on Jet's broad chest.

"Spike?" Jet asked as he turned his face to look at Spike. Spike looked back, a sigh of resignation on his face.

"What is it Jet?" Spike asked as one of Jet's hands caught his.

"I love you." Jet whispered. "You don't have to say anything, I just want you to know." Jet added quickly. Spike nodded.

"I wouldn't be here if I didn't love you too. Now go to sleep and I'll make you forget all about your bad day as soon as you're better." Spike spoke as he kissed Jet again. The blue haired man sighed and let himself take pleasure from Spike's warm, demanding lips. Spike sighed softly. In his heart, he was glad he came after Jet before it was too late, before it was too late to let himself be human again.
