Epilogue

*Six Months Later*

For once in what seemed like a fairly long time, Spike had enough money to go out for a fancy dinner - almost fancier than he could stand, but Angel loved so he did it for her. Angel sat across from him, beautiful in a pale green evening gown. It perfectly complemented her emerald eyes, setting them off in her pale face like jewels. Spike, true to his nature, still wore his ratty blue suit only with a white shirt instead of faded yellow. It had been Faye who insisted that, if he wouldn't get rid of the icky old suit, he should at least make it look halfway decent.

Spike himself had been nervous all day and had been acting rather strange, dropping things and tripping over everything. He even walked straight into the back of the couch and fell right on Faye, who belted him in the jaw and screamed out that he was a perv. And on top of all that, he wouldn't quit checking his pockets. Angel had noticed, as had everyone else, but - unlike everyone but Jet - felt it was probably best not to say anything. Anyway, he was cute when he blushed and she didn't want him to any more embarrassed than he already was.

Spike couldn't be still.

It had taken a good long while, but the scars of Angel's past, both on her body and her heart, were starting to heal. Her nightmares had become more and more infrequent and she no longer shook in her sleep. Anyone who looked could clearly see that she and Spike were obviously very deeply in love. It was also plain to see that the two of them were the best of friends, just as anyone in a good relationship should be. Ed had become like a crazed little sister and was always following Angel around, claiming to want to be just like her - though she stayed her usual nutty self.

Faye opened up eventually and soon she and Angel were painting their nails, doing their make-up and borrowing each other's clothes. It was like they were going back to be the teenagers they never had the chance to grow up as. Faye even taught Angel how to shoot. It was nice to have someone to share some girl time with.

Jet was another matter altogether. She was already falling apart and that experience with the bounty had been no help at all. In short, she was terrified of him. But in a couple of months, Jet started to warm up to the girl and tried to make amends. She still wasn't 100% sure about him, but she figured if Spike trusted him that much, he couldn't be that bad.

Angel hadn't said anything in a while, her emerald eyes gazing off into space, at something that seemed to be far beyond Spike's left shoulder. Spike had just been pushing his food around on his plate in silence. For once in his life, he couldn't eat. Once or twice, he opened his mouth to say something but couldn't get it out. When he met Angel's eyes, all he could do was blush and slide his hand into his pocket, only to pull it out again abruptly.

"Spike, they're playing a slow song," murmured Angel, her tone of and slightly wistful, as if remembering something particularly poignant. "It's one of my favorites..."

Spike smiled and got up from his chair, holding his hand out to her.

"Would you like to dance with me?" he asked, his voice low and deep.

Angel took hold of Spike's hand and got up with a whispered "Of course." He led her out to the middle of the dance floor and eased his arms around her. He held her tight, holding her as if he would never let her go - he wished time would stop for a while, just so he wouldn't have to. Her arms came up to cross her wrists at the back of his neck. As she closed her eyes with a contented sigh, she leaned against him, letting her head rest over Spike's heart. His heartbeat raced, though his breathing was slow and easy. They swayed back and forth to Faith Hill's "Cry".

When the song was over, the lights all dimmed for a moment, making it seem as if time had indeed stopped for a little. People were starting to leave the dance floor. Eventually Spike and Angel were alone in the middle. Seeing that he had a good opportunity at last - remembering advice he had once been given to 'wait for the opportune moment" - Spike made his move. He leaned down and kissed along Angel's shoulder, then turned his head so that his mouth was by her ear.

"Angel, I love you," he whispered in an almost-husky voice, nuzzling his lips against her ear lobe, then suckling gently.

"I love you too, Spike," Angel whispered sweetly, shivering pleasantly in his arms at the caress of his lips and tongue.

"And there's something I've been trying to ask you all day," Spike continued, slipping his hand into his pocket and taking hold of a small velvet box. "It's very important so I had to wait for the right moment..."

"What is it?" asked Angel, her voice soft.

"Angel, my sweetheart," he purred, bending down one knee and opening the small black box as he brought it into her view. "Will you marry me?"

Everyone and everyone in the entire establishment froze, completely silent. Angel's hand flew to her heart and a soft gasp escaped her lips. Her beautiful dark green eyes glimmered with tears of joy, making them really look like emeralds. Catlike green orbs captured the gaze of the mismatched ones staring up at her in hope.

"So you really did mean for me to stay with you and that you would take care of me," she whispered, remembering when they first met. "Yes... Yes! Of course I will."

A single tear trailed down Spike's cheek, shimmering like silver in the dim light of the dance floor. His hands were shaking as he took hold of Angel's left hand. Gently, never breaking their gaze, he slid the beautiful diamond ring onto the third finger. Angel was smiling like... well, an angel, though she had tears in her eyes, as she took both of Spike's hands in hers. She took a step back, helping him rise to his feet. Everyone in the whole place applauded, wishing the couple well. For a while, Spike and Angel just stood there, motionless, as the reality of a dreamlike moment sank in.

Spike laced his right hand with Angel's left and pressed her close to his body with his other arm as he slanted his mouth over hers, amid cheers and more wild applause.
