"Spike, just to let you know I like to practice without people studying my every movement."
Spike stood frozen in place behind the wall. His heart pounded and he was worried that was what gave him away. 'Stay calm , cool exterior.', he chanted in his head as Spike's mask slipped in place. Spike climbed over the wall and walked his lazy walk over to Anila.
"You got me," Spike said as he stood next to Anila with his trademark smirk plastered on his face. They stood there, two bodies against the glow of the moon, both silent and waiting. But for what, Spike didn't know.
Suddenly Anila walked over to the ledge of the building and sat down. She took out a box of cigarettes and lazily put one to her lips. Turning her head she eyed Spike and said "Care to join me?"
Spike didn't hesitate, he needed the nicotine badly. He sat down next to her with his legs dangling over the side of the building. He had an remarkable view of the city spread below him and a canopy of stars above him. Beyond the city he could see the red desert that strangely resembled the blood-thirsty eyes of the antagonist of Spike's life. Spike shivered and put a cigarette in his mouth. He need the tobacco to burn his lungs and remind him that he was alive and no longer in another nightmare. Spike searched the pockets of his pants for a lighter and was about to mutter "Shit", when a lighter was held in front of his face. Spike gratefully lit his addiction and inhaled the sweet taste. He exhaled and asked Anila ," since when did you smoke."
" Since I discovered that I appeared older than I looked," Chuckled Anila. Spike was about to ask her age when Anila spoke " This is what makes me feel alive, when I can look out onto this city and know that thousands of other people live right in front of me. They are real and their homes light up the city. But, Spike the most amazing thing to me is, that without every person, without their messed up or perfect lives, our city would be shrouded in darkness, hidden from life. Isn't that amazing Spike?"
Spike was shocked by this sudden output of emotion from Anila, a person who he wouldn't expect it from. He wanted to ask her about her life, why Spike felt that this girl was different from everyone else but himself. His mouth opened, his lungs expanded with air, his lips moved, but all that came out was a "yeah".
"Spike I want to know. I want to know about your past. I know what happened to you during your active time in the syndicate. However, after that you were faked your death and later appeared to single-handedly take out the Red Dragon Syndicate, one of the oldest syndicates in the world. This was all from newspapers, rumors from sources, and other things. But I've never heard your personal account, your own emotions as your world passed you by." Anila grabbed Spike arm and looked him strait in the eye. "Spike please tell me, so I-So I can understand why you have the look of a long lost warrior.
Spike stared into those blue and green eyes, and for some reason he wanted to tell his story. Suddenly it dawned on him. Her eyes had the look of a lost warrior also. They held the same grief and pain that Spike's eyes held.
Spike sat back and inhaled the shorter cigarette. The world around him faded as his right (authors note: was it his right or left. please tell me!!!)eye brought him back to an angel's humming and rain pit pattering against the window. Spike could no longer see the city below him or Anila next to him. Instead he was taken back to the Bebop, when he ran into the Data dog, when he swallowed Faye's chip, when Edward helped him with the indescribable substance that was infecting people on the Bebop. Spike's story unfolded, and he didn't know how long it took to tell it, but Spike didn't leave a detail out. Not even the feeling he got when he left the Bebop for the last time.
Spike finished his story and a curtain of silence wrapped around the air surrounding Spike and Anila. Spike inhaled his cigarette and quietly said "Now you, Anila, what about you? Where do you come from, who are you. Tell me your life story."
Anila sat silent there for a moment, and Spike almost thought she was pissed now. But here story began and Spike shut his mouth.
"I'm sure you have noticed how I have one green eye and blue eye." Spike nodded. "I guess you can say this all began when I was born. I was my mother and father's first child. They considered the fact that I had to different colored eyes and I was their first born a sign that I was some remarkable gift. So they named me Anila, which means "Special gift."
My father was part of a large mafia, which was famous for the mix of cultures. He specialized in numerous fields, and his boss held him in high esteem. My father would do anything for that man, it was sickening.
I was about five, when I was playing soccer. I had watched my father practice his martial arts many a times, and little did he know, but I was memorizing his motions and storing them in my head. As I was playing soccer, a boy tripped me and called me a bitch. I didn't know the meaning of the word, but I could just tell it was meant to piss me off." Spike could only imagine a little toddler becoming angry at a word she didn't know. But this was Anila, which made it even funnier. Spike grinned at the picture his mind was forming. Anila chuckled about how he was picturing her as a scuffed knee
"So I went at the kid, using some of my father's famous moves. Little did I know that he was standing there watching the whole thing. He walked over, and I remember shaking under his powerful gaze. Instead of reprimanding me like any other father would do, he grinned and said " He deserved that."
"From then on, I was trained under my father and his boss (who thought it was great to start me now). I learned everything, from explosions to how to tell a person was lying. The boss suggested using me for drug deals, but my father had a better plan.
"He wanted to use me for something called the Hammurabi project. Which basically means that when an organization gives our gang a blow, I went after them and sorta punished them for their actions.
" So I did that and soon became famous around other gangs for it. Nobody touched my 'family'. Until 1 year ago.
" The Rapka gang, a new powerful company, had just gotten a little visit from me. They were a disgusting group with no rules or respect. They did anything they wanted, and this time it was raping one of our own woman. So I went to their base and made sure the rapist wouldn't ever hurt another woman again, with a very permanent way. It was a personal visit, because one of the things I cannot stand is when men make women feel inferior.
" After, the gang was furious, and decided that revenge was vital. It was quiet for a time as they planned their revenge. I thought nothing of it, and went on with my life."
Spike felt his stomach twist, he could tell something was going to happen. Her fists were balled tightly in her lap, and her shoulders were tense as hair covered her eyes.
" I came home one day, after school. It was my 17th birthday. But no one was in my house. The place was ransacked as blood smeared the walls. A video was playing in the family room with my dog on it, being stabbed over and over again by one their damn peple, as my family could only watch.
" I remember feeling the bile rise up my throat, and my knees shaking, as I crumbled to the ground. I blacked out."
Spike sat there, now taken back into her world, as the stench of blood filled his nostrils. Anila was shaking now as pain filled her voice.
"I woke up and I remember gathering my guns and all the devices that would give the most torture. I knew they were planning to draw me out, even if it meant killing my family. They weren't going to do this at their headquarters, it was going to be at mine.
" When I got to the mafia's headquarters, it was exactly what I expected. Not a single person was alive. I went to the boss' rooms, but he was dead too, and in his place was my father. He was stabbed in the back, but I knew he hadn't given them the pleasure of seeing his pain. My father was like that, he would never let them know what he felt. I knew he would want me to do the same also. I put on my mask and walked to the next room. It was even more gruesome. My brother was there, dead. There was only one more room to go to," Anila's voice began to choke. "My mom and my sister. They knew this would give me the most pain. My mom was barely alive, and she whispered to me, " leave this place, start a new life somewhere, anywhere but staying here." Those were her last words. But my sister- my sister," Anila's voice broke and tears trailed down her cheeks. " God, she was only 12 years old, and they-and they. Oh god!"
Anila began to sob, and it racked her body. Spike now saw the pain that she concealed for so well the past year. No 18 year old should see what she saw. It was sick, what that group did to her. Spike felt his heart twist and he felt her pain. Slowly he wrapped an arm around her and let her cry on his shoulder.
It was odd, because Spike now saw that she had emotions and she was human. She was so...real.
A few moments of silence with the occasional sniffle followed. Anila stopped crying and looked up to him.
" So I left, I left that place and moved here to Mars. Now I just let work quietly. Sometimes people pay me to do their dirty work, but other times I just do Bounties and sometimes fight people on the streets. A few days ago I found out that the Ripka company is on the move but the location can't be found." Spike waited for the moment where she would say "get out", but it didn't come.
"I'm gonna go after them, and I want you to come with me, to help me. I can't defeat them on my own. So here's the deal, you help me and I bring you back to the Bebop. Good?"
Spike was shocked by her proposition. How did she. 'I mean how'
Anila understood why he was surprised. "I can tell that you want to go back there. That's your home. It maybe a melting pot of people who are lost, but it's a home with a family. It may be an odd family, but a family just the same. I know you say you've had no one since you lost Julia, and that no one cares about you. But, in fact it's just the opposite. I have a feeling those people miss you very much. At first glance it may not seem like it, but they do."
Spike recalled the dream about Faye and her pleading voice and shivered. 'I have to admit that I do miss Jet's beef and vegetables with no beef, and Ein's annoying barking, and Ed's weird... uh, everything about Ed is weird, and Faye...well...I'll get back to you on that.'
Spike considered all the reasons and finally with 'I don't know what I'm getting myself into' he said "Sure."
Anila gave him a small smile and got up, giving him a hand. "We better get to bed, it's about dawn. We'll leave tomorrow night."
The sun glittered over the wasted city and the harbor's polluted water. It smiled because it could stop dreaming. In the dark ocean of space, one old star was beaming, for it was so close to home.
I see it around me
I see it in everything
I could be so much more than this
I said my goodbyes
This is my sundown
I'm gonna be so much more than this
With one hand high
You'll show them your progress
You'll take your time
But no one cares
no one cares...
no one cares...
Jimmy Eat World (Kinda thought this had something to do with Spike's death or maybe Anila's revenge ^,^;)
