The Extermination
Chapter 1: Discovery
Spike stared into space as he watched the ceiling fan spin slowly. It had been a long night and he knew it. After the sudden and apparently deliberate attack on the Bebop, Spike had returned, ship damaged from the battle to have repairs made on the Swordfish II. He knew it was bad...in the back of his mind..he knew that the end would come soon enough. He thought about everything lost in his thoughts.
"Spike." Spike sat up. It was Jet now sitting at the computer looking at something.
"What is it?" he said as he slowly lit another cigarette and took a slow drag from it.
"It looks like you have more problems than you had thought" Jet said dryly.
Spike walked over to the computer. "What is it?" he said with modest contempt.
"Well" Said Jet "It looks like your in for a bigger fight than you realized." Suddenly the monitor came alive.
"What is it now?" said Spike getting tired of these constant interruptions.
"Ah" Jet said "looks like we have a call from Shin"
"What?!" said Spike with mild surprise "Put him through" Suddenly, Shin's pale figure came into view. "What is it?" said Spike "Don't tell me that you were caught."
"No..." said Shin in a weak voice. "It's Vicious...he's just taken control of the Syndicate."
"What?!" Spike said "There's no way that the elders would allow it to happen..."
"That's the problem" Said Shin. "There aren’t any left...."
Spike eyes grew wide. "How?"
"Vicious led what he thought was a hostile takeover of the Syndicate. He failed and was caught by the elders." Shin replied.
"You know the customs...no one who betrays the Syndicate can be allowed to live...but...he must have tricked them somehow." Shin continued, "It seemed like things would be normal...but I returned and there he was standing among the elders...all of them dead."
"Damn it!" Spike said, hitting the console with his hand.
"I know...I know" said Shin. "But...there's something else. It looks like Vicious is after you...he's making sure that no one you know gets out alive...there has already been attacks from the Syndicate under Vicious's orders not to let anyone escape, especially you." Spike was taken aback by this. What was Vicious thinking? How was he able to take control so quickly? "In any case..." said Shin "You had better get out while you still can..."
Spike looked away from the monitor "That's a non issue at this point, If he wants me...then I can give him that much." Shin was looking worse than before
"Look...." Shin said trying to avoid the topic. "There's one person that Vicious hasn't gotten to...but I'm afraid that it may be too late."
"Who is it?" Spike said with limited interest.
"It's Ejiki..." Shin replied.
"Ejiki!?" Spike said looking surprised...he was. Ejiki was a former Syndicate front man in charge mostly of the narcotics and drug selling part of the Syndicate. Spike had only met him a few times. He had a slim figure and had brown hair always cut short. He wore glasses...not for sight but for looks mostly. They accentuated his sadistic personality perfectly. He was known to be ruthless in his trade and had even murdered some of the buyers that had double crossed the Syndicate. His business like manner and cut throat dealings had been what eventually led to his downfall. He had bought a shipment of red eye for the Syndicate and then promptly sold it to Asimov for a high price. When the Syndicate found out of this double cross, they found him in his home. The men sent out quickly killed him after he refused to give up information as to why he sold them out. Spike, having been out of the Syndicate for several years, had only heard rumors as to the grisly scene that ensued when the police found him several hours later. They said that he had a grim smile on his face while the rest of it was mostly on the wall behind him. His fortunes he had be thrown over him...red with blood. It seemed like the Syndicate wanted to make a statement about what they did to traitors to the 'cause'. Other than that, Spike had believed him to be dead as he had been told.
"It seems...that the Syndicate may have underestimated him." Shin said gravely.
"Vicious found out that Ejiki had gotten away...staged his own death in a way. People who are dead shouldn't be able to come back to life." Shin said with slight humor. Spike knew what he meant, he himself had disappeared...only to resurface. "In any case it seems that Ejiki knows something and Vicious is willing to stop at nothing to track him down and kill him...for good this time. I think that it would be in your best interest to find him before they do." Shin said.
"Fair enough." Spike replied.
"It seems that Ejiki has gotten himself lost in the outer reaches of Mars...you might want to start looking for him there." Shin said. "I don't have any more time to waste...I can't stay here. I have to make it back to the Syndicate before they realize that I'm gone. Make sure that you find him and find out what he knows." Shin finished.
"I can do that." Said Spike
"Very well...good luck" Shin said cautiously, looking around "Your going to need it." Then as soon as the call had began, the screen darkened and the call was over.
Spike sat down looking at the cigarette he had barely begun to smoke. It had burned down to the filter.
"So...what are you going to do?" Jet said, intrigued.
"Well, it seems like I'll have to pay Ejiki a visit. We have some catching up to do..." Spike replied. He stood and walked over to the fridge and pulled out the new paper bag filled with ammunition and grenades. He sighed. He knew that it was going to be a long night...
