Chapter 1:
Spike's Thoughts On The Matter
*Spike's POV*
Alright, this was weird, even for Ed. She started screaming and since it took a lot to get a rise out of Ed, we all came running. We saw the red light and then we all saw the girl thrown from Ed's computer screen.
Ed fainted, making Ein go ballistic. Faye shrieked, making everyone but Ed cringe for the sake of their abused eardrums. Jet's jaw dropped, a major reaction for him. I was just plain confused, but there was no way I was going to let anybody else know that. So I just scratched my head and went over to see if the girl was alright. She was breathing at least, probably just unconscious. Who knew what she had just been through...
I picked her up quickly, then went and set her on the couch. She was going to be out of commission for a while, to say the least. The rest of us just sat around our makeshift living room to wait for her and Ed to come around. Ed came to fairly quickly and scuttled away, probably to go and sleep in the shower or something. Man, that kid got annoying with all her weird little habits. Ein came and climbed up in my lap.
"Get off me, mutt," I grumbled, returning the disappointed corgi to the floor.
In about half an hour, the strange girl started stirring. She was taking a while so I decided to help her along. I shook her awake and looked at me for a second like she knew me. I figured she was still just out of it, but then she reached up to rest her hand on my cheek. My eyes widened for a moment and I pulled back quickly. Was this girl crazy or something? Then she started asking where she was and what was going on. Could be a cover, so I told her we would ask the questions.
For a second, she just looked hurt, but I couldn't let myself go soft on her. Then she asked something about her best friend. She looked a little sick. Faye had come over to investigate and looked a little concerned about the ill green tinge coloring the girl's cheeks. As the girl asked another question, her voice trailed off and she fainted again.
"Oh great," muttered Faye before turning defensive. "You're not sticking me with her!"
She turned and left. Jet was long gone, probably to work on those damned bonsai trees of his. So it was just me and Ein. Only God knew where Ed could be... Well, that got me stuck with the girl. I guess it was sort of pathetic. It seemed like she really didn't know what was going on or what was going to happen to her. Mostly it seemed like she was worried about her friend. I hadn't seen another girl, so I assumed this "Ashley" girl wasn't here.
The girl was really starting to look seriously sick. Her face, what wasn't already a nasty greenish color, was turning ashen-grey. She was shaking pretty badly and I couldn't tell whether she was cold or if she was shaking in fear. Well, I figured it wouldn't hurt to give her something warm to sleep under. But as far as I knew, we didn't have any extra blankets that were in any kind of good condition, just the one in Ein's basket. So I stuffed the contents of my jacket pockets into my pants pockets and shrugged my jacket off to wrap it around her.
"Ashley..." she whispered sleepily. "Where are you...?"
She must have still been looking for her best friend. My jacket came only to her knees, but she turned on her side and curled up under it. I looked at her face and frowned. She looked like she couldn't have been much older than sixteen. The absolute most she could have been was eighteen. She was small and slim-built. Her hair was wavy and hung a few inches past her shoulders. I had seen her eyes when she first woke up and they were a striking shade of hazel-green.
"Mmm... I wanna go home..." she whimpered in her sleep, her hand clenching into a fist in my jacket.
I got a good look at her face and saw that she wasn't just whimpering in her sleep. She was crying - and if there's anything I hate it's something making a woman cry. Tentatively, I brushed her tears away. Then something inside my head slapped me. This was no time to go all soft and sensitive. The last thing we needed on the Bebop was one more useless mouth to feed. A girl like her, not much older than Ed, couldn't possibly be of much help. Anyway, she didn't want to be here - she wanted to go home and she had made it abundantly clear.
She turned over and sniffled again, shifting her head around. There were no pillows on the couch. I'm not sure if there ever were, not after the one Faye broke over my head after I fell out of a damn WINDOW. The girl was already curled up into a tight ball under my jacket because we didn't have a blanket she could stretch out under. I actually felt sorry for her. I knew what it felt like to sleep in a strange place, lost and without anywhere to go.
"You'll be alright," I whispered to her, though I wasn't sure why I bothered.
She shifted again, facing me. She looked so small and helpless. I knew Jet and especially Faye would never let me hear the end of it if I got close to her. Jet would just give me those annoying "knowing" looks. Faye wouldn't be nearly as discreet. She would probably just go right on ahead and say I was cheating on Julia or something. Sometimes I hated myself for not allowing myself to fight women. There was no way I would admit it, but her taunting words hurt.
The small girl was starting to cry again. This time she wasn't trying to talk. I wondered if she was having nightmares or something. It really was pitiful to stand beside the couch and listen to her cry. I turned away and was going to go and see if Jet knew where an extra pillow was and maybe check again for an extra blanket. I was about to leave when I heard a quiet, hoarse voice behind me.
"Where are you going?" she asked, squinting at me.
I turned around and leaned against the doorway, smiling at her.
"I'm just going to see if we have a pillow and an extra blanket you can use," I told her, trying to reassure her. "Just relax."
"No... Please don't go..." she whispered timidly.
"It's alright," I said, getting a little nervous but trying to stay cool. "Nothing's going to happen to you."
"I just don't want to be alone," she said softly. "I'm scared..."
I was a little unsure of what to do at this point. I didn't want her upset, because that would just cause problems for everyone. So I did really the only thing I could think to do, and I know thinking isn't exactly my strong point. I sat down on the couch and let the girl lay her head on my thighs. She settled in quickly and was soon so soundly asleep that I doubt an earthquake would have woken her. I let my hand rest on her shoulder, trying to comfort her.
"Don't worry," I whispered, sure she couldn't here me. "I'll help you get home..."
