Chapter 5:
On The Way Home... But Which One?
A week later, I was holding Nicole's hand as a nurse unhooked all the IV's and catheters and whatever else she was hooked to. She was a little shaky when she first sat up, but she got her bearings pretty quickly. I had been right about the bullet not having gone clean through, but it was out now and they had used the new kind of stitches to seal it. So now the only thing she had to put up with was a little discomfort. And now I was wrapping one arm around her shoulders and helping her walk out the door.
"You know, Nicole," I said on the way back to the Bebop. "I never apologized to you..."
One arm slipped around my waist and she leaned her head against the side of my chest.
"Don't be sorry," she said softly. "It wasn't your fault."
"But I could have killed you," I whispered, my voice shaking in remorse. "I never would have been able to forgive myself if I had..."
I pulled away a little and leaned over to kiss her cheek. She smiled at me and tilted her head up to look at me, her lips slightly pouty. I couldn't resist slipping my hand under her chin and pressing my mouth down on hers.
'So sweet,' I thought. 'So soft...'
I could have cracked Faye's skull for accusing me of trying to stick my tongue down Nicole's throat, but now she would be totally right. I was nibbling Nicole's lips, my tongue probing into that sweet, moist cavern I wanted so badly to taste. Her sweet little tongue squirming against my own was so exciting, possibly the most erotic thing I've ever felt. I fluttered my tongue into the roof of her mouth, eliciting a small moan. The small sound pulled me back to reality and I pulled away from her lips.
"Nicole, you don't know what you do to me," I whispered. "And it's not just what you do physically... You're just amazing. I've never seen a girl who would just jump right into bounty hunting! I'm just curious, but how did you get him so interested in you without letting him harass you?"
"A woman doesn't reveal her secrets without due cause," she giggled.
I pulled her into my arms, pressing her back to my chest as I nuzzled into the curve of her slender throat.
"You mean I'm not enough?" I purred into her soft skin.
I felt her shiver in my arms and she turned to face me.
"I just walked up and promised to blow his fuckin' brains out, if you know what I mean by that..." she said coyly, blushing to the roots of her auburn-brown hair.
My knees weakened at the image of her on her knees before me, her sweet lips engulfing my length and her tongue pleasuring me. I felt a twinge in my lower body and it was all I could do to restrain myself from doing something she seriously wasn't ready for. Reflexively, I tightened my arms around her, pressing hot kisses along the smooth column of her throat. Finally, I came to a stop with my mouth right by her ear, my breath heated.
"No... Why don't you show me what you meant?" I growled sensually in her ear, nipping at her earlobe.
She bit her lip and looked up at me with wide eyes.
"Don't you get it?" she asked, her eyes filling with tears. "I was bluffing! Acting! I had no clue what I was doing!"
She looked down at the brown platform sandals she wore with those ratty jean shorts.
"Really, I just wanted you to see that I wasn't totally useless," she continued. "I didn't think it through. It was a dumb thing to do ---"
I felt her arms encircling my waist and holding me tightly as she burst into tears.
"--- and I could have got you shot!" she cried, pressing her face into my chest.
I took a step back from her and watched her face carefully. She was trying to curb her tears and sniffling loudly. With a kind of gentleness I never knew I had, I reached out and cupped her chin in my palm. Smiling at her, I tilted her tear-streaked face up to look me in the eye. She was so much smaller than me, and it just stirred the protective instinct in me.
"Nicole, I've taken gunshots before," I told her gravely. "And I'd be shot to death before I'd let some bastard touch you. I shouldn't have let you come with us."
Nicole blinked back more tears, stood on her toes to wrap her arms around my neck and tilted her head up to kiss my cheek.
"No, I'm glad you did," she whispered, her voice sounding like a shy schoolgirl's and drawing a smile to my lips. "You never would have given me my first kiss otherwise. You would have just kept pretending you didn't care..."
I was taken aback by her words and my eyes widened. She had seemed like such an innocent, but I reminded that innocence did not necessarily mean ignorance. I had already known that Nicole was very perceptive for her age, but the way she saw through me had me poleaxed. Only Jet and sometimes Faye could see through me like that.
"You're right," I admitted. "But that would have been easier on both of us when you have to go home..."
"But what if I don't?" she asked, her voice almost bitter. "All that's waiting for me there is more pain."
My heart flew up into my throat and I could feel it fluttering wildly with my breath like a butterfly in the wind. She was actually offering to stay with me! I was thrilled and my whole spirit floated up with my heart, but it only lasted for a moment. She had her best friend and her family waiting for her, probably worried half to death. I thought of what my best friend had done to me and wondered if I could let her abandon this other girl. No, she was just in danger here. And anyway, like I said, I was eleven years older than her. She deserved to be able to find a love that was appropriate for her and it wasn't me. My heart dropped from my throat to the pit of my stomach and my shoulders fell defeatedly.
"Nicole, this is the hardest thing I'll ever say to you," I told her finally. "But you'll have to go home eventually. Your family and friends are waiting for you."
"You... want me to go?" she asked, her lip trembling and tears threatening to spill from her pretty hazel eyes.
I kissed her forehead and drew her close to me, rubbing her back, then looked down at her and shook my head sadly.
"No, I want you to stay here with me," I assured her, begging her with my eyes to believe me. "But it wouldn't be fair for me to ask you to abandon everyone who loves you."
"But I can't just leave you!" she insisted, then hung her head. "Anyway, I don't know how to get home..."
I tried to grin at her but I figure all I could come up with was a lopsided grimace.
"Have you tried clicking your heels?" I asked half-heartedly, to which she shook her head.
She looked so miserable that I couldn't stand it. I took her in my arms, holding her close to my heart and kissing all over her face. She relaxed against my chest, nestling her head comfortably into the curve of my shoulder and gripping my shirt for security. Her small body pressed against me as she curled up in my lap. I could see how she would be tired right now. She had who-knows-how-many painkillers still in her systems and she had been crying her heart out. I held her close, caressing her cheeks, forehead and eyelids with my lips and encouraging her to sleep.
When we got back to the Bebop, I carried her to my room and carefully laid her down on my bed. I nestled her in under all the blankets and kissed the tip of her nose. I stepped back a little from the bed and shrugged off my shirt, then slipped off shoes, socks and pants. When I pulled back the covers and climbed into bed, Nicole snuggled up to me as if on instinct, her back against my chest. I let out a tired sigh that ruffled her hair and whispered "Sleep well." Then I wrapped one arm around her tiny form and pulled her closer against me as I closed my eyes.
