"It's strange," the man with the golden eye says quietly, "that such things are so universal."

"Not entirely surprising, however," says the man with the golden hair. "Alchemy, magic... in the end it's all human will, human love, human sacrifice. We value ourselves above all else."

"I suppose." He's quiet for a long moment. "It seems wasteful, I think, or selfish, but I would do it again, if it was needed."

"Your motives were better than mine," Hoenheim of Light says softly. "For that, I think, you can be forgiven."

"In the end, it's still privileging certain lives over the others." Akunadin draws in a breath, lets it out again. "I did him a disservice, I think... our children are ever our betters."

"Yes," Hoenheim agrees, and stares out into the swirling emptiness of the Gate, thinking of lost sons and failure.
