Chapter 1

Kurama/ Youko/ Kagome

A special thanks to my lovely Beta, Sara, who has been such a big help to me.

Well this is my new story and first attempt at a crossover, please be kind. Please read and review!

Ok standard Note: I don’t own any part or any characters from InuYasha and Yu Yu Hakusho. I just borrow the characters to play with for a while, then give them back, only slightly mentally damaged… (swings broom at Youko to force him back in my closet) Not you! You have to stay and ‘play’ a little longer… hahahah ok on with the story…

Kurama talking to Youko. ‘…’

Youko talking to Kurama. ‘….’

This could not be right; this had to be a dream. This is modern day Tokyo , no demons were supposes to be here. So why was she running for her life from one?

A surge of pain ran up her leg and blood began to pour from an open wound. The pain and blood were enough to convince Kagome this was reality.

Shaking her foot free from the raised root that had snagged her she continued her dash, only now with a limp. Her long midnight black hair flowing freely behind her as she ran, terrified blue eyes continually moving and scanning the surrounding forest for any sign of the demon.

Her light powder blue sundress was tattered, as it had snagged on many a branch; her exposed arms were a bloody mess from catching many of the same branches.

She began to thinking back on how this trip down to the corner market had changed to a run from a giant demon.

Her mother had asked her to go get milk from the market and Kagome had agreed thinking nothing of the task. The walk had been uneventful until she was a block away from the market. Out of a shadowy ally stepped a mammoth sized man who looking at her with a sick smirk. She had been about to scream for a police officer, when she noticed the five horns sticking out of this goliath’s head. He had laughed at her surprised face then demanded the jewel.

And so Kagome’s evening run had began, and she quickly realized that while this demon had size and most likely strength, he was slow physically and mentally.

Kagome had been running for ten minutes, trying her best to avoid the crowded areas for fear the demon wouldn’t let little things like human lives stand in his way. She dodged into a park and quickly left the main path. This brings everything back to the present; Kagome now limping while trying to find a hiding spot behind a few trees and bushes.

Her thoughts turned to how she had lost sight of him and that perhaps she had lost him all together. She hoped that was the case and soon she could limp back home.
Kagome’s hopes however seemed destined to fall flat.  As she turned a fist collided with her side, the sound of ribs breaking and air rushing from her lungs filled the small clearing.  She was sent flying; her body hitting the ground fifteen feet away with a stomach turning thud and one could almost hear her skin grading off her body as she skidded.

Her body lay motionless, as all the pain had knocked Kagome unconscious.  She had at least three broken ribs, a broken arm, some lacerated organs, possibly a punctured lung, and her whole body seemed to become one big bruise.

The sick laughter of the Kyuukonki filled the clearing as he stepped closer to the fallen girl, his words loud in the quiet of the falling evening and his voice thick with joyous laughter.

“Stupid girl, thought you could get away from me… Now I’ll be taking that jewel, right after I rip your weak human body apart that is…”

His laughter filled the air like thunder, while his steps were bringing him ever closer to the fallen girl. A gargled sound rose from her, blood followed the sound to run over the side of her mouth and down her cheek.

“What? Still alive… stubborn little thing aren’t you? Well that’s ok, we Kyuukonki never mind getting our hand dirty.”

His foot rose to kick the life from the immobile and unconscious raven-haired girl. However, as if by a god’s will his foot stopped inches from her.

Turning, the Kyuukonki only saw his killer for a split second before a green whip of thorns ripped his body in two pieces.

“Rose-Whip!”

Landing a few feet in front of the mass of blood, organs, and bones that had once been a demon, an inhuman beauty stood; his mass of red hair moving slowly by the wind. The fading light of evening gave him an unworldly glow. However, as his deep forest green eyes hit upon the girl who had been the victim of this beast, they took on a glow of utter sadness and pity, “Poor thing, she never had a chance.”

His voice was as soft as a flower petal; if he had spoken in a strong wind, the words would have been lost. He calmly stepped over the remains of the demon, as if just stepping over a puddle of water, and came closer to the fallen girl. He began to reach into his pocket to get his communicator to let Spirit world know of the demon and his victim. However, before he could open his communicator, his concentration was broken by a hundreds-year-old kitsune spirit.

‘What’s going on Shuichi?’ Youko asked, his voice was quiet as if he had just woken from a nap.

Kurama sighed aloud wishing the kitsune had just stayed asleep. Deciding quickly it would be easier just to answer the kitsune, he began mentally speak into the void between the two souls,

‘A human girl was attacked by a demon and I was just about to call Spirit world and make a report of the incident.’

When Youko fell silent for a moment, Kurama began to hope that the kitsune’s curiosity was satisfied and he had gone back to sleep. His hopes were shattered when laughter rang out from the once thief, his deep and rich voice was heard after the laughter had quieted,

‘Better look again Shuichi.’ At the words, Kurama’s eyes snapped back to the girl to see her arm twitch and a gargled breath escape her.

Kurama’s eyes widened as he looked at the bloody mess that had once been a human girl. She was alive and in need of healing.  Putting away his communicator, he quickly bent down to her; checking her pulse and carefully turning her head so the blood that filled her mouth could run out and thus make it easier for her to breathe.

Thinking quickly Kurama picked up the broken girl, an action he regretted a moment later when a strangled cry rose from the girl.  He could feel her broken bones and knew he was causing her pain.  Putting the shame at causing her pain out of his mind, he jumped quickly into the trees and began moving through them.

To Kurama’s surprise, Youko rose close to the surface of their body to use his powers; moving the plants and trees to speed up their trip.

After a few minutes of traveling and knowing they’d be arriving at Genkai’s soon, Kurama couldn’t stand it anymore and asked Youko the question that had come to mind the moment Youko offered his help in getting the girl to Genkai’s.

‘Youko… Why’d you use your powers? Why do you want to help this girl?’

Youko was quiet a moment and Kurama feared the kitsune would not answer, so after a minute he was surprised to hear an answer from the spirit.

‘She’s still alive. Even after being attacked by a demon, she still is fighting and trying to live… Such spirit is so rare nowadays I thought we should fight as hard as she is to keep that spirit alive.’

Kurama was shocked silent; never had he heard the fox speak about someone with such feel, such vigor. Something about this girl had touched the fox, had reminded him of a time before their joining. However, there was something else in the spirit’s tone, but what that something was Kurama could not fathom or begin to define. So they remained silent the rest of the way to Genkai’s.

Once reaching Genkai’s, their footsteps sounding like thunder in the quiet of the large house, they made their way into the main room where he could sense Hiei, Genkai, and Yukina.

All looked up upon his entering, Hiei raised an eyebrow at him.  Genkai remained calm, while Yukina jumped to her feet and rushed towards him.

Yukina’s voice broke the silence as her panicked voice raised several pitches from normal, “What happened to her? Who is she?”

Kurama sighed as Yukina lead the way to a spare room and once setting the girl down began to heal her. Kurama was about to leave when he felt his body stiffen, quickly realizing Youko was controlling their body, questions rising in his mind: Why didn’t Youko want to leave?

Deciding to give Youko a moment, he ignored his frozen body and answered Yukina’s questions, “I don’t know her name, only that she was attacked by a demon.”

“You’re kidding. How could a human survive a demon attack?” She asked to no one, not even looking up from her work healing the poor girl.

Kurama shrugged; not knowing the answer himself, and then with a jolt he felt control of their body returning to him. Shaking his head, he walked out the door to see Hiei leaning against the adjacent wall, eyes never moving from his sister and the girl.

Kurama nodded to Hiei before walking down the hall towards the bathroom to wash the blood off. Once Kurama reached the bathroom, he breathed a sigh of relief; he didn’t understand what was going on.  Why was Youko acting this way towards a human, and why did his body ache the further he got from her. It was as if his body was telling him it was his job to watch over her, which couldn’t be; he had no relationship with this girl.  He had saved her yes, but that didn’t mean anything, so why wasn’t the ache and pain going away.

Youko’s voice broke Kurama from his thoughts, it was calm and silkily as always, but Kurama could tell there was something under the surface, something hidden in the tone, ‘Shuichi… what will happen to that girl when she is healed?’

‘What do you mean, what will happen to her? We’ll have to make some of the powder that erases memory, and wipe out her memory of that demon, this place and us. Why would you ask Youko? You know what we have to do to humans that know of demons; if not us Reikai will erase the memories.’

Kurama waited for a response; he knew one was coming, and he had a feeling in his gut that he wouldn’t like it once it came.

Then with a sigh, Youko spoke again, ‘Why do we have to erase her memory, why do we have to do anything to her?’

‘Why? Because that’s our job now. What’s wrong with you Youko? Why are you acting this way? She knows about demons, she’s going to be a mess when she wakes up and I’m sure we’re the last being she will want near her once she knows we’re demon too. Plus what would you have us do with her Youko?’

‘Well… we could always keep her…’

‘Keep her?! She’s not a puppy; we cannot just keep her here or with us. And you forget once Reikai finds out about this the choice won’t be ours anymore…’

Youko sighed again and fell silent as Kurama began cleaning his clothes.  With all the blood she’d lost just onto him, it was truly amazing she was even alive.

After trying to clean the button up shirt he had worn, he gave up the shirt was ruined. Lucky he had worn an undershirt, also lucky he cleaned most of the blood from his pants so he could still wear those. (Sorry ladies) He was about to leave the restroom when Youko’s voice was heard again, this time his tone was sad, sadder then Kurama could ever remember hearing it before.

‘Why… Why can’t we keep her? …’

‘I told you she isn’t a puppy….’
‘I know that! It’s just…she reminds me of someone I met once… her scent, the moment we held her in our arms I smelled it and the memories from long ago came rushing back.’

‘Someone you knew in the past… who? ….’

No response came from Youko and after a few moments of trying to get the answer from him, he gave up, walked back into the hall, and back towards the room holding the girl.

Smiling slightly, he saw Hiei still standing guard outside her room.  It seemed even an unconscious human girl was not above his suspicion. Yukina was finishing as he stepped into the room.

Looking up, she smiled at him as she rose from her place on the floor.  She spoke voice calm back to quiet and elegant as always, “She’ll be fine now… do you want to watch her, or do you have to go make some of the memory erasing powder?”

Sighing, Kurama told her he’d watch her for now.  He almost laughed as he could almost feel Hiei’s confusion. He was sure if he turned he’d see him standing wide eyed and mouth gaping.  Focusing on Yukina, Kurama saw her is just such a state.

Smiling a little, as he could hear the kitsune in his head clapping and almost bouncing for joy, he walking over next to the girl and sat down.  After recovering, Yukina and Hiei left them alone, and now Kurama wanted answers, ‘Ok Youko, who does this girl remind you of?’

‘A girl I meet once five hundred years ago, she stands out from every other female I’ve ever met…’ The kitsune spirit paused to smile, seeming to be remembering something.

Kurama rolled his eyes at the kitsune, ‘That good in bed, wow I’m impressed…’

Being it was meant as a small joke, the reaction Kurama got was the last one he ever thought to get. He’d expected some comment about how that was true, and then to be flooded with dirty images and sex stories that were sure to make even the most seasoned street walker blush. That’s not what he got.

‘NEVER SPEAK THAT WAY ABOUT HER! This woman stands out because never in my life have I seen such a loving, kind, caring, and innocent soul as her. She was one in a million, a billion. Moreover, I never had the chance to get closer to her; she died before I could. I’ve always felt partly responsible for that. If only I’d stayed near her for one more day, if only I hadn’t rushed off to a worthless treasure and left the real treasure unprotected...’

If Kurama hadn’t already been sitting, he was sure he’d have been knocked on his rear by the fox’s comments. Who was this girl, and what had she done to get such a reaction from Youko? Too enthralled by the story to notice anything around him, Kurama waited for Youko to speak again, wanting his questions answered.
