Chapter 4:
Facts Before Fictions; The Romantic Tragedy Of Inuyasha And His Family
“…Did I hear you right? I could have sworn you said that you come from Feudal Era Japan.”
“I did!”
“Um Vickie.”
“Yes?”
“Did you smoke something,” Sheila frowns, “I know you had a lot of drinks but-”
“No, no,” Vickie shakes her head, “hear me out, Ok. It's true!”
Sheila doesn't believe her for a second, but didn't want to hurt her friend's feelings, “OK, OK. I'm listening.”
“Ok,” Vickie takes a breath and begins her story:
“I'm the youngest out of three and we all have different mothers! My first brother, Sesshomaru Inu no Taishou, is a full blood dog yokai.”
“Yokai?”
“It's a Japanese word that means demon,” Vickie explains before going on with her story, “He's the quiet and dangerous type and he's a lot like his mommy too!”
“What's his mom like?”
“Her name's Sesshomara* and they look a lot alike. She's a bit more playful and compassionate though,” Vickie frowns, “He's kinda rude to her.”
Sheila balls her fists, “I wish my son would even try to be rude to me!”
Vickie agrees, “Yeah. Well, at first he was angry at my second older brother for inheriting the amazing sword Tetsusaiga. It's one of the swords made from one of our father's fangs, you see, and has the power to kill over a hundred demons in one blow!”
Sheila tries to imagine that, “I've never really seen a sword before.”
Vickie nods, “Yeah, it's really cool! But Sesshomaru was jealous and angry because he inherited the Tenseiga, another sword made by one of our father's fangs that has the power to heal over a hundred people in one blow!”
“Wow! That is amazing!”
“True. But my big bro is one of the first of our generation of dog demon warlords! So the sword is completely useless to him!”
“Now I see why he was angry,” Sheila smiles, “did he ever get over his jealousy?”
“Well my big brother is a real loner! He use to travel around the entire area of Japan trying to understand why father had given him the Tenseiga instead of the mighty Tetsusaiga. Even though he's still a bit jealous and claims he hates our second brother, they sometimes help each other out of a lot of really hard and complicated fights!”
“So in the end, they still kinda care for each other?”
“Yeah,” Vickie looks down, “when our great father died, we were all devastated. Even I was angry with my second brother about it for a little while.”
“But what's that got to do with your second brother?”
“I'm not at that part yet,” Vickie continues, perking up, “Sesshomaru is really an aristocratic assassin and he takes his title very seriously. Since he and my other brother have the same enemy, they've finally put some of their differences aside and joined forces! So now they travel together but still fight about those crazy swords of theirs once in a while!”
Sheila laughs, “That sounds like something stupid that a bunch of demon boys would fight over.”
Vickie laughs too, “Yeah! They always make me laugh when they're fighting! And the funny part is that Sesshomaru has two swords called Tokijin and Bakusaiga!”
“I guess I can imagine that,” Sheila says, “What about dating? Does your older brother date?”
“No and yet he's so handsome! He's amazingly pale and tall. And he has these beautiful markings on his face that neither me nor my other brother have. His hair is long and silver white and he has a big fluffy tail that he actually has to hold up off the ground! He wears armor that includes a spiked pauldron that covers his left shoulder and is attached to the upper part of his cuirass and-”
“Wait a minute,” Sheila stops Vickie, “What exactly is a pauldron and a cuirass?”
“A pauldron is part of plat armor that evolved from spaulders-another form of armor plates-in the 15th century and a cuirass is just the term used to mean the whole body armor.”
“Oh,” Sheila feels a bit stupid for not remembering that, “I see. My mother use to talk about that when she use to tell me some of her most famous stories she made up.”
Vickie nods, “Yep! His armor and sash are mostly of `Mainland' influence.”
Sheila wrinkles her nose in confusion, “Why in the world would he have a Chinese sash and armor?”
“I have no idea. Anyways, he also wears a white kimono with a red honeycomb and flower crest at the collar, sleeves and shoulder,” Vickie looks proud, “That's our family's crest. He wears Sashinuki Hakama gathered up at the ankles and some weird flat, ankle high boots of the `Mainland' that me and my other brother don't really concern ourselves with.”
“Sounds like a lot of clothes.”
“It is! He's the strongest out of all three of us, but mostly keeps to himself and Rin.”
“Rin?”
“A young girl that he has raised since she was a little kid,” Vickie giggles, “I think she's just about old enough now to start really dating Sesshomaru.”
“He doesn't sound bad,” Sheila sighs, “I wouldn't mind meeting him.”
“Enough of him,” Vickie chirps, “of course there's me!”
Sheila laughs, “Of course. Tell me about you now Vickie.”
Vickie sits up in the bed that Sheila has lead her to, “I'm a full blood demon, but I am half Akita Inu Daiyokai and half okuri-ookami.”
Sheila nods in understanding, “You're half dog yokai and half wolf yokai.”
“Right,” Vickie beams, “my mother is a lot like Sesshomaru's mom. She is playful and elegant and is the leader of a pack of well known demon wolves called the Wolf Winds.”
“Hmmm, I've never heard of them.”
Vickie sweatdrops, “Thanks a lot Sheila.”
“Oh I'm sorry! Please,” Sheila tries to be polite, “tell me more about your history.”
“Well I don't know how Sesshomaru's mom met our dad, but my mother tricked him into marriage!”
“What?!”
Vickie laughs, “It's the funniest trick I've yet heard. He was trying to take over her territory when she told him that she could tell him where the Great Jewel of Wolf Valley was, but if he could find it himself then the whole territory would be his without a fight!”
“So what happened?”
“My father went several weeks looking everywhere for the Great Jewel, wanting so badly to just take my mother's lands and also its many treasures! My mother's strong,” Vickie says, “and fighting her can be hell for any man!”
“I see,” Sheila smiles, “he wanted to avoid any serious damage.”
“Yeah,” Vickie grins as she continues the story exactly as her mother had once told her, “So finally, after months of searching, the great dog demon gave in and asked my mom where the Great Jewel of Wolf Valley was,” Vickie barely holds in a giggle, “Do you know what she said?”
“What?”
“She said “My name is Jewel! I am the Great Jewel of Wolf Valley and you have to marry me for not knowing my famous name to be mine,” Vickie falls over laughing.
“Oh my god,” Sheila shakes her head, chuckling, “That is a good one.”
“The good part of it is that her name isn't Jewel at all,” Vickie continues laughing, Sheila now joining in, “My mom's name is Kagura!”
“Well, that's definitely one way to get a man,” Sheila says after laughing, “But what about you? And you've got to tell me more about your dad and your second brother.”
“Alright,” Vickie responds, happy to have someone listen fully to her for once, “I'm the only daughter that my dad had before he died. My full name is Victoriana Miko Inu no Taishou Himino. Since I haven't known my father since I was a baby, my second brother and I are very close,” Vickie sighs, looking dazed with memories, “we would go everywhere and anywhere together. I even got to watch him battle a bunch of demons when I was only six!”
“Wow,” Sheila frowns, “that reminds me of my mother. We use to go everywhere together too.”
“Yeah, he is the best! But…”
“What's wrong Vickie?”
“I don't know anything about my father, so I guess you can say that my second brother is the one that raised me,” she stares down at her fingers, “he found me and my mother when I was only one years-old, and vowed to always take care of me. If it wasn't for him, I wouldn't know who I am today.”
“So your life is really your brother's life,” Sheila wonders out loud, “I was raised as an only child by my mother, so I never knew any kind of love from a brother or sister.”
“It's the best kind of love,” Vickie tells her with strong conviction, “I've been with my second brother ever since, so my history is really his history.”
“Are you now gonna tell me how your second brother is connected to your father's death?”
Vickie narrows her eyes, “You don't forget about nothing do you?”
Sheila blushes, “Is that a bad thing?”
“No,” Vickie sighs with a smile, “I guess not. You see, my second brother's story is the most romantic and most tragic out of all three of us. Even his name is an irony of what he truly is.”
“So what's his name?”
“My brother is none other than the great hanyo of Feudal Era Japan: Inuyasha Inu no Taishou,” Vickie says with the utmost pride, “Only around 150 years old, Inuyasha was once a notorious half-demon trying to steal the Shikon no Tama in order to become a full demon. Just barely surviving his own birth, our father's last words were to name him Inuyasha as he fought to the death in the burning home of Lady Izayoi, Inuyasha's noble human mother.”
Sheila almost holds her breath, not noticing Vickie's sneaky little smile as she questions her earnestly about this new, tragic person to add to her list of favorite stories, “What happened to Lady Izayoi and Inuyasha? Does Inuyasha know he's of noble birth?”
“We all are,” Vickie comments, “Our father is the Great Inu no Taishou and he was a very well known demon.”
“But what of Inuyasha and Lady Izayoi,” Sheila asks impatiently.
“Ok, OK,” Vickie laughs, “hold your horses! Lady Izayoi and Inuyasha were able to escape to a village where they could be safe. But Inuyasha's tragedies are just at their beginning.”
“What do you mean?”
“Well, with Inuyasha being a half demon, the humans in the village would have nothing to do with him.”
“Nothing?!”
“Nope. The kids wouldn't even play with him.”
Sheila frowns, “Poor Inuyasha.”
“Yeah. Lady Izayoi would cry every night for her child. You see, she really did love Inuyasha's father and they had met when he saved her from danger.”
“Wow,” Sheila sighs in a daydream, “were they truly in love?”
“He gave his life to save her and Inuyasha. He even brought Lady Izayoi back to life with the sword Tenseiga, so he must have loved her.”
“So what else happen to Inuyasha?”
“Unfortunately, Lady Izayoi soon died and that left Inuyasha as an orphan.”
“That's awful!”
“Demons wouldn't help him or have anything to do with him because he was only a half demon. Humans hated and feared him. Inuyasha soon learned to depend on only himself and started to trust no one.”
“It can't get much worse.”
“Oh, but it does! Inuyasha actually fell in love with a powerful human priestess name Kikyo and they were a really great couple,” Vickie explains, “she had succeeded in making him believe that there was something better in life than hunting down the Shikon Jewel and trying to become a full demon. Lady Kikyo was the guardian of the jewel and, with time and a lot of crazy moments, both she and Inuyasha had come to love each other.”
“That doesn't sound so tragic.”
“I'm not finish yet!”
“There's more to this story?”
“A whole lot more,” Vickie continues, “There's an evil demon by the name of Naraku.”
“Huh,” Sheila blinks, “Naraku? Doesn't that mean hell?”
“And that's exactly what he is! Hell on Earth!”
“Who is he and what did he do?”
“Originating from a bandit name Onigumo, he was also a hanyo like Inuyasha. Except he's willing to do some very evil things in order to find the Shikon no Tama and become an extremely powerful full demon as well,” Vickie continues to explain, “One day he tricked both Kikyo and Inuyasha.”
“But how?”
“Disguising himself as Inuyasha, he attacked Kikyo and pretended to take the Shikon no Tama!”
“What,” Sheila nearly screams, “I can't believe this!”
“It's true,” Vickie says firmly, “and, to complete his plan, Naraku disguised himself as Kikyo and not only attacked Inuyasha, but also made the villagers believe that Inuyasha was coming back to take the Shikon no Tama for himself when he was actually coming back to help protect it!”
Vickie squeaks then ducks as Sheila punches at the air suddenly.
“That no good Naraku,” she growls, “I've never even met him and already I wanna teach him a lesson!”
“I know how you feel,” Vickie smiles sadly at Sheila, “but the worse has yet to be said.”
“Still there's more?!”
Vickie nods, “When Naraku attacked Kikyo, he had seriously wounded her…she…”
“Vickie no,” Sheila sits down beside Vickie, lost in the world of the Feudal Era, “you mean he…he killed her?”
Vickie nods silently.
“That bastard.”
“But before she died,” Vickie goes on quietly, “she sealed Inuyasha to a tree and died with the belief that he had betrayed her while Inuyasha went into a fifty-year slumber.”
“But what about you, Vickie,” Sheila asks, now concerned for her friend, “who was taking care of you while all of this was going on?”
“I mostly took care of myself, but Keade, Kikyo's sister, who was just a little kid at the time, would help me out now and then.”
“Vickie…”
“I would visit my brother everyday when he was sealed to that tree,” Vickie says, silent tears welling in her eyes, “I remember calling to him all day and all night and kept wondering why he wouldn't answer me. After twenty years went by I gave up on calling him as I started to believe that my brother was dead.”
“Oh Vickie,” Sheila hugs her, “I'm sorry.”
“It's OK. It's not like it was your fault,” Vickie wipes away the tears, “it's just hard for me to accept that I could do nothing for the brother that had always did so much for me.”
“I understand,” Sheila pulls back into her own world, “I still blame myself for my mother's death. She was so young and beautiful…she didn't deserve to die.”
“But he's story has yet to end.”
“You mean…?!”
Vickie nods, “After fifty years went by, a girl, who turned out to be a reincarnation of Lady Kikyo, suddenly appeared and freed Inuyasha from the seal!”
“Good for him,” Sheila says happily, “I'm glad.”
“And now, he's story goes back to being tragic and hopeful all in one.”
“Hmm?! How so?”
“A witch used the reincarnation of Kikyo to bring back the real Kikyo as a kind of zombie that feeds off souls of the dead to survive.”
“Oh no!”
“Yes,” Vickie looks stern, “and the silly reincarnation of Kikyo, the girl that has also found a way into Inuyasha's heart, had made the mistake of breaking the Shikon no Tama into a bunch of shard pieces scattered all over Japan!”
Sheila blinks, “And you didn't kill this bitch because…?”
“She can sense the jewel shards, so my brother needs her alive for that.”
“Oh.”
“Anyways, Inuyasha now travels the world with this girl and a bunch of other people in order to find the shard pieces and become a full demon while still being in love with Kikyo and the girl that he travels with,” Vickie grins, “He must kill Naraku, but ends up saving a lot of people by killing demons that come after him and his friends along the way in his journey.”
“So,” Sheila looks hopeful, “how exactly does it end? Does he go back with Kikyo, even though she's a zombie? Does he live happily ever after with Kikyo's reincarnation and find the all the jewel shards? Or does he die at the hands of his worst enemy, Naraku, and leaves Kikyo, her reincarnation and the world as we know it to mourn his death?”
“Sheila, look what time it is,” Vickie fakes a yawn and stretch, “the sun will be up any minute! We should take a rest.”
“But-”
Vickie climbs under the covers with a satisfied sigh, turning her back to Sheila, “Good night.”
Sheila pouts, “That's not fair, Vickie.”
Vickie answers with a snore.
~She didn't even tell me how he looks!~ Sheila thought, getting into bed with a huff, ~I know the story's not true…and yet the way she told it…even I almost believe that these things have happened~ she smiles as she closes her eyes to fall into a dreamy slumber ~Inuyasha Inu no Taishou…
