Chapter 16: Attack of the Media Monsters
~~~
How the hell am I going to explain this to Sesshoumaru? Inu Yasha asked himself as he watched the scenery pass them by. He could blame the whole thing on Jessica… but he doubted that his brother would buy it considering it was all over national TV [most likely international TV by now…]. Glancing over at Jessica he noted she was still sleep, the uninjured part of her face gently pushed into the window as she dozed. Everyone on the bus was quiet, be it because her friends didn’t want to wake her up again or because they had been put in their place at the last stop, but the quiet was calming and it gave Inu Yasha time to think.
Jay looked over at the half breed and chirped, smacking him lightly with his tail before turning back to the window. Inu Yasha understood what that meant, even though the little dragon still couldn’t speak he got the message loud and clear. He needed to stop worrying or he was going to wake Jessica up again. At least the last time she had woken up it had been funny, if it happened again she’d probably hit him. So instead of wondering about what he’s brother was going to say he let his mind drift back a little bit to what had happened a few minutes before.
~~~
Once on the train Jessica let Jay out of his bag, happily chirping to the people walking by. Of course most of them were squealing children [who were going to Sacramento to visit a museum], but Jay was just happy to be out and about around people. Completely ignoring the kids’ happy cries Jay climbed up Jessica to rest around her neck, cooing happily to her. You would think this would stop them, but the kids were persistent and in the end Jessica let them come up and pet the dragon. Jay didn’t look like he minded, Inu Yasha was convinced the little beast just like the attention.
Everyone seemed to think the way Jessica acted around children was normal. Tiffany told him that kids looked towards Jessica like she was a god, that’s just the way things have always been. Inu Yasha thought she was just like every other woman he’d know, crazy for kids and pinning to have one of their own. Just look at the way she acted around Yuki, if it wasn’t for the fact the little boy wasn’t one of Sesshoumaru’s she’d probably beg Rin to keep him.
After getting off of the train, once again dealing with startled gasps caused by Jessica carrying Jay and Inu Yasha’s ears, Jessica waved good bye to the kids as they walked to their bus stop. Despite all of the fangirls lining up to follow Inu Yasha to Tahoe they got bored pretty fast as they waited for their bus and resorted to asking Jay to hide behind Jessica and flap his wings, giving people the impression that she had demon wings. It wound up scaring a few people, but in the end they got a great picture.
Which lead to the event in question.
Once they boarded the bus they found out that a number of the fangirls were going to Tahoe [though many more bought tickets when they found out where Inu Yasha was going…], so to save him from constant questions they sat surrounding him. Adam and Laura in front, Bradley and Derrick behind them, Tiffany sitting with some bags to the side and Jessica was sitting with him since he really didn’t want any of her friends acting like Miroku around him again. And it worked well for the first half of the bus ride, until Jessica finally nodded off after taking some pills for motion sickness. The moment she ‘slipped off to visit the dream lord’ [whatever that means…] as Laura put it, they all but jumped him.
“So…” One started as she twirled a ringlet of her box blonde hair around her finger, “do you have any plan up in the mountains?”
Another got up out of her seat as the bus came to a stop at the half way point [which is in Placerville] and leaned closer to Inu Yasha, her boob job cleavage hanging out of her shirt. Inu Yasha inched towards Jessica in an attempt to distance himself from the woman behind him, whatever she was wearing was killing his sensitive nose. Tiffany could tell by the look on his face he was trying to control his urge to sneeze, so she motioned for no one to stop the woman. Two more walked up behind her, most likely her friends since they had the same smell around them. "Yea, I bet we could have a great time..." the busty woman purred.
The woman made a move to touch one of his ears [even if he couldn't see her the smell of her perfume got stronger as she got closer] so he threw his head forward and sneezed as loud as he could. Jessica jumped up at the sound, looking around like she couldn't remember where she was for a moment. Inu Yasha sneezed a second time, drawing she attention to him and the problem at hand. "What the hell..." she mumbled, her Japanese near perfect in her half asleep state. When the half breed sneezed again she asked, "Are you okay?"
"Fucking perfume-" Inu Yasha wheezed before he suffered another fit of sneezing. Laura jumped up and began fanning him with her book in hopes it would help him breathe some.
Jessica looked up as Inu Yasha continued to sneeze, looking at the group of women that were surrounding them. "...Okay, who's wearing perfume?" she demanded, she was mildly pissed that she had been asleep for what felt like only a few minutes before people moved in to attack.
The blonde, now fully moved in her seat to help Laura fan the wheezing demon, shook her head, "Are you kidding, I can't wear perfume... it burns my eyes. I wear cucumber melon body spray."
"How do we know it's not whatever your wearing?" the busty woman asked as she glared daggers into the back of Jessica's head.
"Yeah, maybe he's allergic to you smell or somethin'," another behind her laughed. The others joined in with her laugh when they thought Jessica's feelings were hurt.
Too bad for them she had hear worse things during her years in high school. Inu Yasha attempted to say something but a sneeze cut him off. Jessica had a good idea what he was going to say anyway. Taking a deep breath, Jessica replied, "Listen, I train with demons every day. I can't even wear anything that doesn't go with my natural scent, let alone perfume. The most scented thing I'm wearing is my apple shampoo and conditioner."
"Plus, she's allergic to strong perfumes. So take your Gucci wearing ass and sit back down before Jessi starts sneezing with him!!" Bradley said as he stood up to tower over the group.
"Yeah! Can't you see they have enough to deal with without you guys adding to it!?" Someone near the front called out. It seemed that the other riders were joining in now, many of them turned in their seats to glare at the group of women.
The blonde girl handed a tissue to Tiffany to hand to Inu Yasha, who was finally beginning to breathe properly now the other women had moved far enough away. "No matter how much of that crap you put on will never hide the fact that you're a two-bit whore," Inu Yasha wheezed out. The busty woman glared at him, her face bright red with anger. She opened her mouth to shout something at him, but Inu Yasha stopped her before she could say anything. "And don't say I'm wrong because I can smell at least half a dozen men underneath what you're wearing."
"Besides, when we get back it more training for us..." Jessica said, answering the blonde's original question.
The blonde smiled in defeat, knowing better than to push the matter any further. "Can't blame a girl for trying."
"I know what your problem is!!!!" the busty woman yelled suddenly, unable to give up the fight. "You just can't handle a real woman, that's why you sittin' with that flat chested gimp with the butch hair cut!!!"
Everyone stopped what they were doing, shocked that the woman had actually said that. No one moved to their defense, they were too busy watching Jessica's eye twitch in annoyance. "Are you retarded?" Adam asked as he held on to his chair, the bus started moving again and everyone was almost throw forward as the bus lurched to life.
Jay squeaked in surprise as he suddenly found himself squished between Jessica and the chair as she sat up to face the person behind her. "Kay, let me tell you a few things. One, my hair is like this because my asshole brother had a handful of it and it was either watch my friends die or hack it off to save them. Two, I'm limping for the same reason as number one. Three, I'm happy with my flat chest because using a sword is hard enough with a silicon chest like yours getting in the way. And finally," Jessica said as she pointed at Inu Yasha's head, "This is Inu Yasha for Christ's sake; he could probably get any woman he wanted. Now sit your ghetto ass back down before I come over there and show you a few finishing moves Sesshoumaru showed me!"
The bus erupted in laughter and clapping, the sting to their pride forced the women to retreat to the back of the bus to make snotty remarks behind their backs. Soon after Jessica fell asleep again, leaving Inu Yasha to his thoughts. He didn't mind, Jessica was still human [depending on who you asked] and needed sleep after yesterday. At least no one jumped him this time.
~~~
Finally after hours of traveling they rolled back into town. Jessica woke up as Adams phone started ringing [his was the only one on... again]; she carefully pushed her face away from the now cold glass of the window. Blinking, she looked outside and saw that it was snowing. Ignoring the grumbling that was coming from the back Jessica slipped her coat on as everyone got ready to get off the bus.
"We've got a problem," Adam said as he turned around, his face pale as he held up his phone.
"Whatever the problem is it can wait till we get off the damn bus," Jessica mumbled as she zipped Jay into her coat to keep him warm.
"That is the problem!" Adam yelled as he held his phone out in front of him.
"We have a minor problem on our hands Inu Yasha," said the low baritone voice on the phone.
"I'm too tired for your shit Sesshoumaru, so what the hell is the problem," Inu Yasha snapped. Whatever it was couldn't be as bad as what he had to go through to get there.
"Someone has altered the media to your destination and are now waiting for you and Jessica to arrive here," Sesshoumaru answered, his tone devoid of all emotion.
Both Jessica and Inu Yasha were speechless, all Jessica could manage to do was stare at the phone with a horrified look on her face. Inu Yasha on the other hand reached in typical Inu Yasha fashion.
"What the fuck do you mean they're waiting for us!!? How the hell do they know where we're going!?" he yelled, startling a few people with his outraged cry that no one understood.
"It doesn't take much to figure out where you two were returning to considering the original tape CNN aired. They've also had hours to prepare," Sesshoumaru all but barked, clearly pissed off by the whole situation. "You will get off the bus at your designated stop and wait there, I'll handle the rest." Sesshoumaru abruptly ended the conversation, stopping any arguments Inu Yasha might have.
"Jessi... are you okay?" Laura asked quietly.
Inu Yasha, who had been silently cursing his brother, looked over at Jessica when her friends asked their question. She was in a horrible state. All the color drained out of her face, making her look deathly ill, her eyes were still wide with shock but now her hands were shaking. Jessica looked like she was having a nervous breakdown. Inu Yasha moved to ask if she was okay [though he knew she wasn't] but they pulled into the transit station at that very moment.
The sight that greeted them was a frightening one indeed.
The already small area, dwarfed by the casinos and ski gondola, was filled with all sorts of reporters, new people and photographers. The moment the bus came into view every single one of them leaped into action and began surrounding the bus before it had even stopped.
Once the bus stopped the driver stood up and said, "Okay folks, I think it'd be a good idea if everyone got off the bus before these poor people get mobbed by those vultures." There was a murmur of agreement, so he continued, "Good, now if you two could escort the ladies in back off the bus to make sure they don't cause anymore problems we can get this done."
Two men up front stood up and ushered the group off the bus, pointing them towards the nearest hotel they could spend the night at before going back to wherever they came from in the morning. Once that was done everyone started getting off the bus, ignoring the questions the reporters threw at them. The last person off and the only person to say anything was Kristi [the blonde girl], who's only answer was, "Jessica is just a normal person, a very tired normal person. I don't see why you guys are making a big deal about this..."
Slowly Jessica's friends began to file out,, since none of them carried anything larger than a backpack while Inu Yasha tried to get Jessica to calm down. Inu Yasha felt bad about the whole thing, the moment she saw the reporters her face went from white to gray. She wasn't just scared, she was terrified. And she had every reason to be. She could do things they couldn't, she was different than normal people. You could almost hear the accusing reporters demand to know if she was human or not. Jessica had never really been normal [as far as he knew], but now she was something people would fear.
And he understood how she felt.
Sighing, Inu Yasha grabbed hold of Jessica's arm and began pulling her up. She didn't fight, she was bone tired and the hours sitting hadn't been kind to her leg. "Come, let’s go before Sesshoumaru comes looking for us."
"I can't do this..." Jessica whimpered, unable to stop Inu Yasha from pushing her towards the exit.
"I know..." he answered, "but Sephiroth has a habit of wanting to fight us where people can see... So sooner or later we'd have to do this..."
Carefully the two of them walked off the bus and into the sea of reporters, each one of them yelling questions at them. All of Jessica's friends kept the reporters back, forming a semi-circle while they waited for Sesshoumaru to make his grand appearance. So there they stood in the snow, Jessica trying to back away like a wounded animal while Inu Yasha kept a firm grip on her arm so she didn't run off... or slip on the ice.
People in the back began to move to the sides, whoever it was too short for any of them to see over the crowd. The disturbance moved forward until it reached the front, revealing it to be little Yuki carrying Jessica's cane. A few people didn't move fast enough for the boy, Yuki cried out and used the can to shove them out of the way. Once the little boy caught sight of Jessica he ran forward passed her ring of shocked friends and began telling her how he'd see her on TV. Jessica smiled, but didn't stop him as he continued to talk, she only took the can as he held it up to her mid-babble.
Inu Yasha didn't stop Yuki either, since his rabble had stopped the reporter's questions. Now the only noise outside of Yuki's talking was the sound of more than a dozen cameras going off every few seconds. And even that was beginning to slow, since Sesshoumaru chose that moment to show up. The crowd began parting as he walked forwards, his face set in stone. Both Inu Yasha and Jessica had the same thought as he came to stand before them:
They were dead when this was over.
Tiffany was the one blocking his path, she glared up at him in anger as he sized her up.
"Papa!!!~!"
Yuki rushed over to his father as he side stepped Tiffany and scooped the little boy up with more grace than most parents have. No one stopped him, everyone in the group knew better than to stop him and Laura's brain had stopped functioning due to cuteness/hotness overload.
Sesshoumaru looked over Jessica, taking note of her injuries and how they were closed up. "This is the extent of your injuries?"
Jessica wasn't sure what he meant, so she answered, "Well, nothing's broken this time if that's what you mean..."
Sesshoumaru regarded her a moment as Yuki giggled in his arms. Silently he turned around to face the completely shocked crowd. "As you can see, Jessica is need of medical attention. So no one will be answering any questions at this time," Sesshoumaru said, leaving no room for argument. "Any questions at this time can go through my assistant until a decision is made on if, when and where she would speak on anything concerning the matters at hand." And just like that he turned around and walked back through the crowd, ignoring the angry questions the press were yelling.
Their little group looked at each other, unsure of what to do now. "Is your brother Jessica's publicist or something?" Derrick asked.
"No, but if we wanna leave I think we should follow him," Inu Yasha said, attempting to move everyone before things got ugly. Everyone started moving to follow the half breed, though Jessica seemed to be having trouble keeping jay still. Apparently he thought that because they were moving it would be okay to poke his head out. The questions stopped the moment the dragon poked his head out the cameras started flashing wildly, causing poor Jay to scream in surprise. As Jay threw himself back into the safety of Jessica's coat Tiffany helped Jessica move passed the reporters as they fell onto a man with purple hair. Jessica gave the man a sympathetic look, knowing that he was the assistant as they moved by.
As they rounded the corner Jessica sighed, "I wish I could forget any of this happened..."
"With enough sake you could..." Inu Yasha suggested.
"You know... that's a great idea..."
~~~
Rin all but ran down the hallway, sighing the whole way there. It was bad enough that Chiaki was coming back today, but Sesshoumaru that thought it best to keep Jessica and her friends at the house last night so that the press wouldn't find out where she lived yet.
That had been a huge mistake.
Once Sesshoumaru became swamped with phone calls and such, Inu Yasha and two of the others snuck out and grabbed as much sake as they could grab. It wasn't until midnight that she had looked in on them, every single one of them passed out with empty bottles of sake everywhere. Thankfully her husband hadn't found out that they had raided some of his private sake...
... at least until one of the cooks mentioned it.
Rin skidded to halt as she sighted Sesshoumaru in front of the doorway to the room where Inu Yasha and the others were sleeping. He had the look of pure murder on his face. Rin thought about stopping him from waking them but decided that it was best to let him find out on his own.
Taking a good look around the room he noted a sign just above Jessica's head that read:
~~~
How the hell am I going to explain this to Sesshoumaru? Inu Yasha asked himself as he watched the scenery pass them by. He could blame the whole thing on Jessica… but he doubted that his brother would buy it considering it was all over national TV [most likely international TV by now…]. Yuki rushed over to his father as he side stepped Tiffany and scooped the little boy up with more grace than most parents have. No one stopped him, everyone in the group knew better than to stop him and Laura's brain had stopped functioning due to cuteness/hotness overload.
Sesshoumaru looked over Jessica, taking note of her injuries and how they were closed up. "This is the extent of your injuries?"
Jessica wasn't sure what he meant, so she answered, "Well, nothing's broken this time if that's what you mean..."
Sesshoumaru regarded her a moment as Yuki giggled in his arms. Silently he turned around to face the completely shocked crowd. "As you can see, Jessica is need of medical attention. So no one will be answering any questions at this time," Sesshoumaru said, leaving no room for argument. "Any questions at this time can go through my assistant until a decision is made on if, when and where she would speak on anything concerning the matters at hand." And just like that he turned around and walked back through the crowd, ignoring the angry questions the press were yelling.
Their little group looked at each other, unsure of what to do now. "Is your brother Jessica's publicist or something?" Derrick asked.
"No, but if we wanna leave I think we should follow him," Inu Yasha said, attempting to move everyone before things got ugly. Everyone started moving to follow the half breed, though Jessica seemed to be having trouble keeping jay still. Apparently he thought that because they were moving it would be okay to poke his head out. The questions stopped the moment the dragon poked his head out the cameras started flashing wildly, causing poor Jay to scream in surprise. As Jay threw himself back into the safety of Jessica's coat Tiffany helped Jessica move passed the reporters as they fell onto a man with purple hair. Jessica gave the man a sympathetic look, knowing that he was the assistant as they moved by.
As they rounded the corner Jessica sighed, "I wish I could forget any of this happened..."
"With enough sake you could..." Inu Yasha suggested.
"You know... that's a great idea..."
Rin all but ran down the hallway, sighing the whole way there. It was bad enough that Chiaki was coming back today, but Sesshoumaru that thought it best to keep Jessica and her friends at the house last night so that the press wouldn't find out where she lived yet.
That had been a huge mistake.
Once Sesshoumaru became swamped with phone calls and such, Inu Yasha and two of the others snuck out and grabbed as much sake as they could grab. It wasn't until midnight that she had looked in on them, every single one of them passed out with empty bottles of sake everywhere. Thankfully her husband hadn't found out that they had raided some of his private sake...
... at least until one of the cooks mentioned it.
Rin skidded to halt as she sighted Sesshoumaru in front of the doorway to the room where Inu Yasha and the others were sleeping. He had the look of pure murder on his face. Rin thought about stopping him from waking them but decided that it was best to let him find out on his own.
Taking a good look around the room he noted a sign just above Jessica's head that read:
Beware of Sleeping Jessica
May God Help You if You Wake Her UP!
May God Help You if You Wake Her UP!
The note was written in drunken handwriting but the last part was oddly clear. Whatever the reason, Sesshoumaru strode into the room none the less, his steps sounding loudly in the silence. Side stepping the half drunken prone bodies he stopped in front of the doors on the opposite side of the room. For a moment he didn’t do anything, but suddenly he threw open the wooden doors. Sun light and bitter cold rushed into the room, some of the rooms occupants crying out in pain as the light hit them. Inu Yasha, the closest person to the doors, sat up cursing the light in a way that would've made a sailor blush like a virgin. Sesshoumaru stood and watched as the group woke up, still extremely pissed.
Rin decided to leave before things got ugly, and they would if her poor husband woke Jessica up. Praying silently she made her way back to the kitchen. Hopefully things would go better when Chaiki got there.
Sesshoumaru stood silently as Inu Yasha pushed himself up, demanding to know who was the one that opened the door while holding his aching head. Just as he tried to stand up her heard Sesshoumaru’s low growl, stopping him in his tracks. Very slowly he turned, like in a B rated movie, only to find himself slammed into the door frame. He all but snarled into the whimpering half breeds face, waking the rest of the room’s occupants.
Including Jessica..
Now Jessica's friends had warred Inu Yasha of Jessica's temper when being woken up the night before. At the time he didn't believe them since they were smashed and Jessica was already passed out at that point, but they put up a sign as a percussion to warn people.
And why would that be necessary? Because Jessica had a habit of throwing things at the person waking her up.
Jessica bolted up at the sound of Sesshoumaru's pissed off growl, completely unseating Laura and Jay in the process. She looked around the room, noting somewhere in her mind where she was awake that Tiffany was already gone, before catching sight of the pissed off demon lord. Knowing that he was the reason she was awake she grabbed the nearest thing to her as the awake part of her brain screamed that whatever she was about to do was a very bad idea.
Sesshoumaru was about to beat some sense into his retarded half breed of a brother when something smashing into his back, stopping his murderous thoughts for a moment. He turned to face his attacker, only to see Jessica standing on the low table... and she was packing pillows...
And so there's the end of the chapter.
... Yeah... have fun with that.
