I gasped as I awoke to the feeling of falling, sitting bolt upright, and found myself thankfully in bed, not falling out of the Earth's pull of gravity...I put my buzzing head in my hands to try and calm myself, but was interrupted loudly by the buzzing of my alarm clock two minutes later and I jumped and threw it at the wall, silencing it abruptly.Music blasted out of my radio as I quietly readied myself to face the day. I wore my usual uniform that was required for my girls' school. It was what you'd expect of a catholic school girl's outfit. Red plaid, knee socks, the works. It was actually sort of clich?...The only different part about me was my hair and body piercings. In a bout of defiance I dyed my yellow blonde hair a bright cherry red and pierced my my nose, navel, and ears with several sharp needles just to spite the sisters. That was when the school bad girls took me in. You wouldn't expect a catholic school to be riddled with the kind of thing like gangs, but it was. And when they said you were in, you were in. Or else. I wasn't in a position to refuse. Half of the school treated me like a pariah anyway. I supposed it was just a matter of time...As I stared at my reflection in the mirror, I frowned and stood up on my tip toes, unsatisfied with my height. So I switched out my regular flats with some extremely durable combat boots I had lifted from a shop the other night and some black and white socks. They added another good three inches on me with their steel souls, and I nodded to my double in approval. Being short and small never gave me an advantage in the respect department...There was a sharp bang at my dirty window then, and I had to smile. Yureha wasn't the most subtle when it came to getting me out of the house, but she was affective."What took you so long, beauty queen?" She griped at me impatiently.I spun on my toe like a ballerina, giving her a good look at my boots, "Notice anything different?"She quirked an eyebrow at me appreciatively, "You pick those up on the sweep last night? Kind of risky to wear them the day after isn't it?""You know me," I smirked wickedly at her, "I'm a dare devil."
Yureha rolled her eyes at me, crossing her arms, "Just don't go pointing fingers when you get caught...Stupid twinkle toes."Yureha was practically the complete opposite of me when it came to the looks department. She was tall, with short, spiky, black hair and a curvaceous body. My own curves were only visible when I was naked, and my breasts were practically nonexistent...I used to be intimidated by Yureha, until I was forced into the gang and she became my only friend. We formed by ethnicity mostly...Latinos, Black, Indonesian...We were the Asian crowd. Vietnamese, Korean, Japanese, didn't matter as long as you fit the look. Like me, Yureha was half Japanese. We lived with each other in one of those Asian New York City neighborhoods. The place was a dump, but it was home..."I'm surprised you didn't skip today..." She said suddenly as we walked along a detour in a construction site, "Today being 'today' after all..."I pretended to fiddle with my shoulder strap on my bag for a moment, until I realized she wasn't going to drop it and I sighed, "Yeah...""Well," She prompted me, "...Are you going today? Do you want me to go with you?"I shook my head and stared at the wooden planks below my feet as we continued on. Of course she meant ground zero. And yes, I was going today, like I did every year on this day, but I didn't want her with me. Not that I didn't feel grateful for the support, I did...I just had to go alone...Today marked the anniversary of a national tragedy. It was also the anniversary of my parents' death. September eleventh. The day a nation will never forget...and neither will I...ever...Years ago, both my parents left on American Airlines' daily scheduled morning transcontinental flight from Logan International Airport, in Boston, Massachusetts, to Los Angeles International Airport. On Tuesday, September 11, 2001, the aircraft flying this route\a Boeing 767-223ER\was hijacked by five Al-Qaeda terrorists and intentionally crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center in New York City, as part of the September 11 attacks. Before impact struck, several of the passengers were able to make phone calls to tell their loved ones goodbye. I got the call in the middle of class. I stood up abruptly, despite the sister's complaints, and ran straight out of the class room. I stood and watched as the plane carrying my parents crashed straight into the building. All I could do was watch, and listen to the static on the other end of the line...Today, school went by in a blur...I didn't pay attention to much of anything, and Yureha had to flick pieces of an eraser at me several times to help me avoid getting smacked with something of the Sister's.It was what happened after school that mattered.I followed Yureha's footsteps blindly, fixated on the ground and almost ran into her when she stopped abruptly."What do you want?" She demanded to the boys in front of us and blocked our path arrogantly. The leader tried to look hurt, "Aren't you happy to see me, Yuu-chan?"She simply glared at him and I walked up to stand beside her in what I hoped was a threatening gait. The guy, he had white spiky hair with too much gel in it and bio hazard contacts, stared me up and down with a savory expression on his face that I didn't find at all reassuring."Who's your friend?" He asked Yureha in a fake pleasant voice."No one." She growled at him fiercely, "She doesn't have anything to do with it."I shot her a questioning glance but returned to the guy almost at once, because it was one of my habits since I joined the gang not to take my eyes off the enemy. It had gotten me into trouble more than a couple of times before..."Whoever you are, you should get out of our territory..." I told him darkly, "Unless you plan on getting yourself killed..."The guy blinked once in surprise, then burst out laughing, "where did you pick up this one Yuu-chan? She's so cute! Like an angry kitten...meow..."I stared at him in disgust and was about to march over and knock him one, when Yureha barred me by holding her arm out in front of me."Like I said, Brett..." Yureha told him quietly, "She doesn't have anything to do with this.""Like hell I-" I started, but Yureha pushed me back roughly and I stared at her in shock. She never acted like this."Just go home, Aneka. You're not involved in this..." She ordered me.First of all, Yureha never ordered me to do anything. Second, and most unusual, she never said my name. Not ever. She had nicknames for everyone. Even the boss.I stared at her for a moment, and back at the guy who was now grinning horribly at me. This did not bode well...However, I gave her one last look, then ran around the corner, out of sight...I leaned against the corner of the building breathing hard...For a moment, I debated on getting the girls, but decided against it, since Yureha would get the punishment in any case...No, I would have to do this on my own...I looked stealthily around the corner and saw the sleazy guy throw an arm around Yureha's shoulders and lead her away. She walked stiffly and glanced behind herself, spotting me. Her eyes widened and she shook her head. It was that gesture that made me tail them...Yureha was never afraid.I followed them in a taxi and started getting more and more suspicions the closer we got to Hunts Point...What sort of business have you been messing with Yuu...?All too soon, we lost them, and I cursed under my breath. I started to get out of the cab and the driver shouted at me. I tossed him some cash I found wadded up in my pocket to shut him up and ran off.Lucky I was wearing my uniform. All I had to do was ask if anyone had seen a girl dressed like me. At the rate I was going though, I'd have to comb through all of Hunts Point to find her. That was until I talked to a shady guy looking for money."Where is she?" I asked again, shoving him against a brick wall, my switch blade cutting into his neck."I'm sorry! I'm sorry!" He shouted."Iknowsorry." I growled irritably, "Now tell me something Idon't"The Market!" He told me, "They took her to the market, she's there I swear!"I dropped him abruptly, and the dirty bum crumpled at my feet. I murmured a thanks and walked off swiftly, leaving the man in the ally to recuperate...I didn't particularly like threatening people, but I would if it meant getting what I wanted...still, I hated looking at them afterwords...It made me feel sick in my gut...I was about to turn right back around and threaten the guy some more though, when I found no one at the Market. When I turned around though, I had to do a double take. There on the street corner stood Yureha. However, she was missing half of her clothes. She literally looked like a prostitute."Yuu!" I shouted, "What the hell are you doing?!"She stared at me like a deer caught in headlights, then she did something I have never seen her do in my life...fled...So I ran after her."Yuu!"She stopped when we finally reached a dead end. Slowly, she turned to face me. Her face was caked in so much makeup she didn't need, and was set in a hard glare."I thought I told you to go home."I tilted my head, confused as hell, "Why are you doing this, Yuu?""Why do you think I'm doing it!?" She roared at me.I shook my head, "Look, if it's the money, we can work something out-"She raised her chin up at me, "Save it, Ane.""What-" I started."Like you have any scrap of change you can cough up, just save it." She repeated, "You're just as broke as I am, and you know it. Some of us don't have your skills though, I can't just go and steal everything I need!!""Yureha, I can help-" I tried again. She scoffed, "Just shut up. You can barely help yourself, much less anyone else...The only reason I stay around you is because I feel sorry for you! Who do you think pulls the weight in this friendship? Who do you think takes the shit from the boss, huh? Not you, that's for sure. I'm the one who takes care of you! I'm the one who takes care of us! So just shut up, stop complaining, and let me do my job, Aneka."I shook my head, "No...No, you shut up. I don't need you to take care of me! Not now, not ever, and definitely not like this!"She took a step towards me, and I took two steps back, still shaking my head in disbelief. Finally I just turned and ran, tears streaming down my face."Ane, wait! I didn't mean it like that!" I heard her voice chasing after me. She did. I know she did. She always meant what she said.I opened the door of the first taxi I saw, and flung myself in...
